New Laptop/PC- Help Needed

Recommended Posts

I have an LCD monitor with a DVI only port.

I have a PS3 (which my mate gave to me).

Question: Please confirm whether it is correct to get an HDMI/DVI converter cable to plug in from my PS3 to monitor?

Also, if I wish to plug in my desktop PC to the monitor, aswell as my PS3, do I need a double as the monitor has only one port?

Many thanks

refer to this video

if you want PC and PS3 into a single moniter you'll need something that switches, like this:

I need to replace my old Lenovo laptop which i have had for 4+ years. I have narrowed it down to these 3. My choice is very limited as i live in Cambodia and we only have one shop really that sells genuine laptops. I mainly use my laptop for playing FM, browsing the web, watching movies and listening to music. Which one of the three is the best value for money? Also which one would be able to run alot of different leagues in FM the best. Im thinking the 2nd option, but as i know very little about laptops i could be completely wrong.

1.Lenovo IdeaPad Z480 ( LL-557 )

Intel Core i5-3210M (2.5GHZ, 3MB Cache)

4GB DDR2 SDRAM

750B HDD SATA

14 WXGA

Nvidia GeForce GT630M 2GB

669$

2.Dell Inspiron 5537 (LE-600)

Intel Core i5-4220U (1.60GHZ, 3MB Cache)

4GB DDR3

750GB HDD SATA

15.6 HD WLED

DVD+/-RW

AMD Radeon HD 8850M 2GB

709$

3.Dell Inspiron 5437 (LE-540)

Intel Core i5-4220U (1.60GHZ, 3MB Cache)

4GB DDR3

500B HDD SATA

14 HD WLED

DVD+/-RW

Nvidia GeForce GT740M 2GB

699$

Thanks

If those are your three options, pick the first one. It has a higher clock speed than the others (2.5 GHZ versus 1.6)

Thanks for the reply MSCCG. I have checked with the shop and they don't have the Lenovo one in stock, typical! They do have the following though. Which actually looks abit better. What do you reckon?

Lenovo IdeaPad 3000 Z480 ( LL-592)

Intel Core i5-3230M (2.60GHZ, 3MB Cache)

4GB DDR2 SDRAM

1TB HDD SATA

14 WXGA

Nvidia GeForce 2GB

739$

I have a couple questions. You said in your 1st post that the clock speed is faster which i can see. But doesnt the Dell one's have the new 4th Gen Intel CPUs in them, where as the Lenovo's have the older 3rd Gen Intel CPUs in? Does this make a big difference, especially when running FM?

Also on the latest Lenovo one (IdeaPad 3000 Z480). Do you think the graphics card is powerful enough to run any recent-ish games?

Thanks

Broadly speaking, improvements from the 3rd generation to the 4th generation were not performance related, but power consumption related. If you're going to have it plugged in (and for playing games you'll want that) then it doesn't make a whole lot of difference. "NVIDIA GeForce 2GB" isn't very specific, but looks like a good amount of video RAM. That computer is good enough to play FM at a decent speed, and other ones too.

Thanks again MSCCG. Yes i always have my current laptop plugged in, so making sure i get one of the 4th gen CPUs isnt such a big issue then. It seems all the Lenovo laptops they sell that come with the NVIDIA GeForce 2GB are either Nvidia GeForce GT630M 2GB or Nvidia GeForce GT740M 2GB.

What do y'all think of this one peeps? I have no idea about computers these days so any advice is welcome! If anyone has any other suggestions, this one is about at the top of what I'm looking to spend. I want to be able to have a decent number of leagues (say 8 - 10) running without any real issues!

Thanks

Should be fine if you mean leagues and not countries. Maybe a little on the slow side but as you said, your budget is limited.

I have also been going through this thread and looking at the laptops suggested. I have narrowed it down to these 3, a couple from here and one I found myself. Of course I am looking to spend as little as possible, but will these all work with the 3D match engine and just some basic leagues (probably England, Spain & Italy)?

has anybody seen any good deals?

i'm looking to upgrade my laptop... budget around £500 preferably with a dedicated graphics card and a quad core processor...

Sounds like you've got a good idea of what you want, so it's up to you to find a good price. Thing is, I think you'll have trouble finding a quad core processor for under £500. Even £600 would be a stretch.

Would this be good to run FM 14 on?

http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15r-5537/pd?oc=fncwu181h&model_id=inspiron-15r-5537

Need something cheap(ish) but that will play the game. I like to have a decent number of players loaded... +90k

Pick something that doesn't use a U series processor, because they run at a lower clock speed. But you're looking at around the correct price range at least for 90,000+ players.

If you don't live in the UK have a look at these: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2%7c0&ci=18818&setNs=p_PRICE_2%7c0&N=4110474292+4103497039+4033986829+4034387733+4103497038+4246734246+4294948923+4231055476+4271753948&srtclk=sort

Thanks MSCCG, Had already seen these other 2 on that site

http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ACER-E1-NX.M09EK.037_1478219.html

Never watch the games in 3D so not to bothered about the graphics card. What do you reckon

pick the Acer. Graphics or not, this computer will not need to be replaced as quickly as the HP, so you save money in the long run. Plus you can run more leagues with it.

This is my current laptop, it's gone slow but tempted to do a restore to see if FM14 will work.

Would these specs run FM14?

Windows 7

Pentium Dual Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10 GHZ

4.00GB RAM

64-bit OS

Cheers guys

PC System Requirements

OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8

Processor: Intel Pentium 4 Intel Core AMD Athlon XP: 1.6GHz+ V/7/8: 2.2GHz+

Memory: 1 GB RAM

Graphics: NVidia GeForce FX 5900 Ultra ATI Radeon 9800 Intel GMA X3100 128MB VRAM

DirectX: Version 9.0c

Network: Broadband Internet connection

Hard Drive: 3 GB available space

Your computer should be able to run FM14 as it meets the minimum requirements. But it might struggle with more leagues. Worth a try but you need to experiment.

Thanks mate. I bought it and gave it a try, played three friendlies and my laptop sounded like it was about to explode :D so going to buy a new one.

I know there are better value desktops around but the family are getting a new one and want to buy direct from pc world (old school values i guess) so would somebody beso kind to advise me on which of these would be best? It'll mainly be used by me playing FM but also used for general internet usage and to store photos and documents and so on.They all look pretty similar to me but i know nothing beyond the basics!

Don't get the middle one. I would go for the i5, it is just a little bit better than the others.

Morning all - sad to say that all i need my laptop for is really FM and for my iTunes to be honest. so i'm at a crossroads - do i buy a PC or do i buy an Apple laptop? which is more future proof as this will also decide my spend as over the last 6 years instead of spending big i have been buying basic models and getting maybe 2 years out of them before they cant run FM as quick as i like. so is it better to buy apple with all there software updates but at a higher price of a grand - or is it better to buy PC laptop and maybe have to buy another one in 2-3 years so will end up sepdning a grand anyway?

The problem for me about buying a MacBook is that I'm not sure whether the game does run better on OSX than on Windows. I suspect it doesn't, which means that all things being equal, a Windows PC versus a MacBook will support FM for an equal amount of time. The advantages then would be in simply buying into the Apple "experience", which is at the very least a more consistent affair than with Windows. Free updates, free productivity suite, great support, great software and hardware. For a pure gamer, this may not be enough to spend the extra money.

On the other hand, since you use iTunes I assume you have an iOS device. To be honest, you're probably already halfway convinced as most iDevice users are. Another way to look at it is that MacBooks and iDevices tend to have a much higher resale value than products of any other brand. This means that instead of chucking it out after 2 or 3 years you may even be able to get something back for it, especially if you take care of it well. Also, iTunes works much better on a Mac and having multiple Apple devices is a pretty neat experience too.

Hi lads,

I've just gone for one of these:

http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-refurb-n55sl-s2019v-15-6--6gb-750gb-core-i7-windows-7-blu-ray-laptop-94Y1.html?refs=54600000&src=3#

Realise its a refurb but think its worth it for the specs/price:

£485 for i7 quad core, 6gb ram, 2gb NVIDIA GeForce. Plus i like the fact it has windows 7 rather than 8

that's the kind of thing i could be after,

is it all good spec etc?

Hello again.

Even after my previous posts I'm still undecided on a laptop.

Mainly needed for FM, Microsoft office, general internet use, iTunes.

Found a few others since my last post. Wondered if they'd be any good?

Always liked the design of Sony Vaio's so hoping that would be what I need. Unsure of the processor though (Argos seem to have failed say what 'dual core' processor it is).

I'm thinking the Acer might be a downgraded version of the other Acer mentioned on here recently? I5 rather than i7

And the HP, I don't really know much about (or haven't heard much) about AMD processors although it does also carry a dedicated graphics card, which the Vaio doesn't.

That website gives very little information. If it's definitely between those three, pick the Acer or the HP as they are almost equal. If you want a Sony, don't buy it from that website.
