Jambo98
Anybody got actual experience with the GeForce GTX 1050? I am looking at a new laptop, it will likely be MSI and the model i am looking at comes with the 1050, but its passmark rating looks crazy low for some reason, below older cards like the 970 and miles below the 1060, despite in theory not a massive price difference between the cards. Problem is, i also cant seem to find anywhere which would customise an MSI laptop, and they dont seem to sell direct.

AlGlr
Hi Smurf, could you recommend me a laptop from Argos? Budget is £600-£700, cheaper the better of course lol. The 3D engine runs fine at 4K resolution with High settings. The GTX 1050 is at the low end of Nvidia's current generation of cards - hence why it is much lower than the mid/high end cards like the 1060 onwards. But don't let that put you off because the 10xx generation cards are the first laptop cards to have near desktop quality performance. If you want a 1060 or higher card then you'll find the laptops that have them are much bulkier because of the heat generated by them. There's the MaxQ versions which generate less heat (and fan noise) but keep in mind that these do not have as much power as the standard/non-MaxQ cards. The card looks decent and i value light / slender laptop which is why i am going for the Stealth model, to get the 1060 in that it whacks on another 500 quid or so the way the models are configured. Smurf
Any computer will run the game. If it falls below minimum specs then it won't run or won't run very well. It's just how well it runs is a different story. Some people are happy with a 5 second progression, some wouldn't be happy with it. As Einstein said, sit with a nice girl for two hours you think it’s only a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute you think it’s two hours - it's all relative. Anyway - what i3 processor model is it? I never said they wouldn't run the game - and don't want to give that impression - however, i5 and i7 processors have turbo boost and hyperthreading which is better. My goal is always to find a laptop in the same price range for someone - only with better specs. Typcially from worst to best it's Mprocessor i3 i5 i7 Then the numbers aftwards denote the generation - so i3-2xxx would be 2nd generation - and i3-7xxx would be 7th generaiton - and simiarly with i5-7xxxx and i7xxxx And just because it's a newer genaration doesn't make it automatically a better processor. Following the generation numbers you will find U HQ HK S (desktop) T (desktop) and a few others Typically - stay away from U processors if you can. HQ is a next step up and delivers much better performance. All of this is relevant for FM only. In terms of other games and other applications they would have much different needs. I wouldn't know you could ask the technical forums. On FM15,16 and 17 CPU speed was crucial when you load lot of leagues in game. Also when you go on holiday for simulation (i need that because i te lower leagues often) CPU speed was crucial also. I tested FM17 on G4560 (dual-core) and Ryzen 3 1300x (quad-core). Test times was almost same. I dont play any other game and i dont use PC for some "hard" work so it seems Quad is enough (dual-core also maybe) for next 5 years. In that case i would go to faster single-core CPU (read Intel) over Ryzen.

The last thing this thread needs is over-confusion - as most people come here as they don't understand the needs in a computer, never mind overclocking or swapping parts etc. I try to offer out of the box solutions - keeping theme with the needs of the consumers in this thread. beardymouse
I'm currently buying a Macbook Pro. The difference between 13-15" is the graphics card. beardymouse
Thanks for the response. Smurf
What sound editing software are you using? Bit of background, i'm a graphic designer, and I use Mac's everyday - and it's pretty damn slow to be honest, and it's relatively new. I'm not against Macs and I understand where software is a necessity then there's no choice. I was just curious - as you can get an all inclusive 10 day trip to Mexico for the price of a Mac. Genuinely trying to save you some money - but if you need a Mac then knock yourself out The processors in the Mac for the latest of 2017 are 15" Touch/Mid-2017 2 2.8GHz i7 (I7-7700HQ) 15" Touch/Mid-2017 2.9 GHz Core i7 (I7-7820HQ) 15" Touch/Mid-2017 3.1 GHz Core i7 (I7-7920HQ) All perfectly good. Smurf
Honestly the best option is to increase your budget. £500 is a lot of money to part with, for something that you may or may not be happy with. Smurf
At the end of the day you've bought it now - and that's what you have - if you want to cancel it then that's up to you - or return it - you'd have to check with them. U processors aren't bad at all for general computing - but for FM I just can't stand over them because they just are underpowered, and FM needs power. If it has U processor it will still run - how well it runs, leagues/divisions/database size and all that - plus how long of a career you have are all factors. Will it work - YES! You definitely could get a better laptop for £750 though.

If you have time, a recommendation from Currys would be superb (I've got a voucher for about £160 i need to use). Nice one, appreciate the replies Not much luck on Currys https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/dell-inspiron-15-5000-15-6-gaming-laptop-black-10164852-pdt.html I looked at them all - and this is the cheapest for what I would recommend for FM. Pom1982
Can anyone advise if these laptops would play fm18. I won’t be using the laptop for anything else and happy to play the game on basic settings. Smurf
Not quite sure how these work - it has 32gb storage - that would be enough. However, it says it uses cloud storage, and FM game sizes are quite large, meaning uploading a lot of content to the cloud. I wouldn't recommend either of them. The processors are basic. Guest
This is a great thread which I have learnt a lot from. One thing I am curious about, is what do people do with their old laptops once they have bought a new one???
trago18
Hi After a new laptop and have found this most useful, I only really play FM and this seems decent though at the very top of my budget, could I do better for the money? Don't load tons of leagues, usually 2 to 3, just want something that will last a good few years! https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/ZX553VD-DM968T-ASUS-Gaming-ZX553VD-DM968T_2145526.html Thanks in advance
Smurf
@rooneymagic88 Take out the hard drive and destroy it. Buy cheap hard drive and donate the laptop to a local school. @trago18 Looks good.
