i havent yet done the benchmark test for the MSI that I bought - I did do the benchmark on my previous laptop and its 2nd bottom on the benchmark thread, 

if people want to I can run the benchmark on the MSI that keeps being linked later tonight??

hows this looking? I know smurf has said a u processer is never the best but would I Ben ok a sister it's i7? Also how good/bad is this graphics card? My budgets about £650 I normally run 3 leagues max

Just wondering if it's worth upgrading my laptop from 8gb to 16gb before FM18?  Will it make much difference to how quickly it will run?  Current setup is

MSI GE60
Intel Core i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz
2gb Nvidia Geforce GTX 765M
RAM - 8gb DDR3 (max 16gb)
128gb SSD + 750gb HDD

Got it basically bang on 3 years ago so know it's getting on a bit but don't plan on getting a new laptop until this time next year.  Will upgrading to 16gb make much of a difference to how FM runs on a large/XL database (120k+ players) or would it be limited by processor etc to the point it would not really be worthwhile?

For the one here, which is the one I bought (with the extra storage) I ran the benchmark test from the benchmark thread and ended up with benchmark A 4m.56s and benchmark B 9m.57s.

explains it better in the thread than I could, but essentially 2 different saved games with various details/leagues etc

you can then time how long it takes to holiday for a week.  It gives an idea of how fast different CPUs etc compared to each other. 

so in the tests I ran - benchmark A time was 4 min 56 seconds to run and B was 9 minutes 57 secs.

By other reports on here an SSD won't have massive effect on FM.

However, it would be an easy and cheap thing to upgrade in the future should FM somehow take advantage of the technology.

As far as I know, it doesn't really, takes just as long to load/save games. 

However, and SSD you would see significant improvements in your computers overall speed in booting up, shutting down, restarting, loading and saving files, opening and closing apps etc.

I am looking for a new laptop to play football manager on and need some advice on what to buy.

I have read what has been written and it seems that the processor and the graphics card are most important (sorry If I am wrong!). I would like to play 3d matches and have the game run quickly with a large database and about 13 leagues.

My budget can go up to £900 (£1000 if the laptop is top notch) if that helps.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for that Smurf. I was thinking about getting a custom built one with the highest specs I can get as a work colleague advised the processor and graphics card can be very hard to upgrade in a laptop. Do you think that is a good idea?

I don't think for £1000 you'll get better than the i7-7700HQ processor.

Forgot my old password and email so had to make a new account on here 🙄

Anyway my trusty old Samsung laptop from early 2013 is now on it's last legs, so I've decided to treat myself to a new laptop for FM18. I want to run at least 15 leagues on a really fast speed with a large database. My old Samsung was fine for running plenty of leagues but I never felt like it was running quite fast enough. With that in mind I'm looking to splash out on something really high end that will hopefully last as long as my old one.

Any opinions on the following set up? Gone for the fastest processor available on a laptop I could find, the i7 7700k 4.2ghz.

It's quite pricey at £1700 but that's with a full 2 year parts and labour guarantee and fast track build too. Not too bothered about price as I need a new laptop anyway.

All looks good though - no bother with that at all.

Main reason I've gone for a smaller screen is because I travel a lot with work. Just wanted something marginally more portable. Do you think this will absolutely zoom through processing between days with about 10-15 leagues? That's the main thing I want.

I have a Macbook Air atm, that is a few years old, but it gets hot and makes a lot of noise when I've played FM for a while. As I only use my laptop for FM and general Internet/email/work. That means I dont need a dedicated gamer laptop (I guess). I can see that most of you recommend those MSI's that looks  pretty much like a spaceship. Do I really need that kind of laptop to run FM in an optimal way? I played FM 17 at the lowest graphic settings and its still slow and noisy. Will a laptop like the Asus Ultrabook, for example:

Ok - firstly Macs heat sink will dissipate the heat through the case (so to speak) that's why it can get hot - Football Manager is very intensive, which means the heat sink is getting hotter and hotter, and the case gets hotter and  hotter, the fan starts to work overtime and that's what causes the noise - the fan. 

Yes - a lot of the laptops do look like spaceships, I guess that's an internal design decision from the engineers - make it MORE masculin, nothing girly looking, or cutesy - you'll sell more. You'll see that in your local Tesco, they will seel "loufes" for men - called Shower Tools, because it's more masculine - or moisturising cream is marketed as being "Ultra Hydrating Cream" - because it will get more sales, truth is, it's the same moisturising cream as in other moisturiers marketed at girls and/or women.

 

Ok - so the laptop you point to - it's designed for portabality and for being on the go. It's very difficult to find a powerful laptop that's 13 inch, designed for portability, that's good for FM.

 

FM first and foremost needs a kickass processor, that's what drives the game. That's why your Mac is underperforming - because it probably has the same processor as you linked to in your Saveon Laptops - meaning  you will have the same issues you're facing now. 

As it's designed to be portable, battery has to last long long hours, that's why 13 inch laptops come with "u" processors - like the one you linked to, and the one in your MacBook.

 

Here's a link to 2 very good computers that are 14 inch 

It's only got a 3-4 hour battery life (and a lot less off the main power with football manager running)

Bottom line is that you can get an ok  13/14 inch laptop for a standard price (around £800) 

But you will sacrafice power in the processor. 

If you want power in the processor then you are going to pay more.

And if you want a longer battery life you will pay more again. 

 

And if you go up to 15 inch - you can probably get a very decent laptop, that plays FM very well, and costs the same as the 13 inch that doesnt'.

The bad news is - to get a good processor for FM - and Lightweight and Long battery - you'll pay a lot lot more.

 

You really need to find a balance of what you're happy with

  1. Processor - what can you live with - can you live with only 3 leagues loaded - 5 or 10 - or what's your priority. How many leagues are you willing to run? 
  2. Lightweight - what weigh are you happy to carry about all day
  3. Screen size - what size are you willing to go up to
  4. Graphics - do you really want to watch 3d matches in highest detail - or lowest setting do? 
  5. RAM - you will always need 8gb or more.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer! It's that masculine image that I don't need, or want. I just want a regular computer that runs FM smoothly, but it seems to be more difficult than I thought.

 

Regarding processors: They always have theese fancy names, but it seems like those you linked are i5 or i7 Quad Core that can turbo boost up to 3,7-3,8GHz. Generally speaking, will a laptop with about 8gb ram and one of those processors do the job? Graphics isnt that imporant to me as my main focus is the "progress to time ratio". I can live with low graphic settings if it runs fast and smooth. Thanks again.

Just be aware that processors ending in "u" are ultra low voltage, designed to run slowest (underclocked) to preserve battery life for the laptop when not plugged in. That's why I don't recommend them for FM. As FM is all about processing power. 

Any processor with H or HQ, T, K, etc after the i5 or i7 is perfectly fine - as long as the base speed is 2.2ghz or higher. 

What they turbo boost to will depend on the heat being processed by the laptop. The hotter it's running the less likely it will go to the faster speeds.

I'm more about what I will get for which price if you understand me. And I'm not from GB, that means that I'll not get a pound for a pound. Some brands and models are differently priced here so its hard to set a spesific price limit.

I guess take a look at PC Specialist and see what you can come up with.
