Hey guys,

I'm looking at investing in a brand-new laptop and want to get a decent one that will play FM17's 3D match engine without any hitches.

I've stumbled across this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-VivoBook-K556UQ-DM1024T-Notebook-Processor/dp/B01NBTMRVK

Do you think it will handle the rigours of a drama-filled and emotional save on FM17?

Many thanks!

Will run the game fine, but in terms of graphics quality I reckon it'd probably only run FM in 'Medium' graphics quality.

Honestly think with a bit of looking you could find a better laptop for £800, but depends what you specifically want it for.

Hi all,

I'm looking to get back into FM after a couple of years away and I'm going to need a new laptop. I've read these pages and a few other sources to try and get an idea of what I need, but thought I'd post in here to ask for some advice.

Budget - Maximum £400

I'm looking to play FM17, preferably using the 3D Match Engine. I know that to run this as best as possible I'll probably need 8GB RAM and a dedicated graphics card as well as much CPU as possible, though I'm aware all of this is unlikely to be available in my budget.

The only laptop I can see that comes close within my budget is: http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/hewlett-packard-refurbished-hp-15-ay167sa-15.6-intel-core-i5-7200u-2.5ghz-a1-z3c95ea/version.asp

Can anyone offer a bit of advice on alternatives, perhaps options that sacrifice one aspect over another (for instance, sacrifice graphical capability for CPU and I'll then play in 2D only etc)?

Or perhaps the one listed above is the best option?

Many thanks in advance.

EDIT: Have just read some reviews of laptopsdirect and it doesn't fill me with confidence to buy a refurb unit from them, despite the positive words in this thread. Ideally I'd prefer to buy from Currys PC World or similar so if anything goes wrong it's easier to remedy: https://www.reviews.co.uk/company-reviews/store/laptops-direct

Just bumping this in case anyone has any recommendations. I noticed a few others quoted me and are looking for similar too....

Wanting a laptop really, budget is at tops £900. I'll be looking to do it on finance as well.

Want something that allows me to play FM17, AOE without any issues, the full amount of leagues etc. Also, I like to use packs for trophies/club logos etc so what would the laptop need in order to run this smoothly? Otherwise, I use it for studying and browsing. I had this (http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/asus-k556uq-core-i7-7500-12gb-512gb-ssd-geforce-gtx-940m-dvd-rw-15.6-inch-w-k556uq-dm1024t/version.asp) recommended to me due to the SSD (which he said would be beneficial) but I'm open to other suggestions.

Currently got a Toshiba Satellite, know it has a i7 processor but can't remember the full name. It allows me to have 80,000 ish players on FM and close to 30 leagues for 2 stars performance.

PS. I know very little about specs and stuff!

Ok thanks. Do any laptops spring to mind at all? I'm struggling to differentiate in such a saturated market!

Thanks

I'd argue this laptop would give better performance than all three - http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/msi-gl62m-7rd-207uk-core-i7-7700hq-16gb-1tb-geforce-gtx-1050-2gb-15.6-inch-9s7-16j962-207/version.asp

Only drawback in the fact it's not got an SSD.

Look at the processor and graphics card benchmarks here:

Processors - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmark-List.2436.0.html
Graphics Cards - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Looking at those three above you have in order:

130th Best Processor and 200th Best GPU
169th Best Processor and 124th Best GPU
58th Best Processor and 99th Best GPU

The one I listed above has:

37th Best Processor and 64th Best GPU.

Saying that, I'm only looking at processor and GPU settings - I'd suggest you do a bit more research to find what you actually want. Good luck!

Hi, probably looking for the impossible here lol I'm looking for a laptop with a budget ranging from 450 - 600 that'll play fm on with the best graphics etc, don't need it to be overly portable or for any other purpose, obviously I'd like it to be as quick as possible and to last for as many years without needing renewing, I'd love some advice and would be very grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction, I'm completely a computer novice.. Thanks

I'm not a big gamer, but I do play a bit of FM. I've been looking at the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1. It's got one of the lower speed i7-7Y75 processors that Dell say runs up to 3.6Ghz. I think this is a boost though, and the normal speed is slower?

Does anyone have any experience with this laptop/these processors? I don't think it could run FM (with it having a low speed and being fanless) so just want to double check.

Thanks!

Quick question, if I'm on a budget, which aspects should I prioritise to play FM as fast as possible?

- RAM

- SSD

- Processing Speed

- Number of Cores

And is there a minimum for each of these? For example, I'm currently thinking that a 4GB RAM, Dual-Core, SSD, 2.5ghz laptop would be a decent bet. But should I be looking to perhaps sacrifice SSD for a quad core?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Just looking at this Lenovo laptop: https://www.intel.co.uk/buy/uk/en/product/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-510s-14-29ghz-i5-6267u-14-1920-x-1080pixels-white-522639

2.9Ghz CPU and SSD storage plus 8GB RAM. Only dual core though. Seems like a good bet.......?

A few quid cheaper here also:

I've used this company before, they have a click and collect service at their Box Computing base in Birmingham aswell as other Collect+ locations around the country.

Can you play football manager 2017 on a 2 in 1 laptop does anyone play it on one?

Yes you can - but it would require the correct specs

Quote
  • MINIMUM:
    • OS: Windows Vista (SP2), 7 (SP1), 8, 8.1, 10 (1607) – 64-bit or 32-bit
    • Processor: Intel Pentium 4, Intel Core or AMD Athlon – 2.2 GHz +
    • Memory: 2 GB RAM
    • Graphics: Intel GMA X3100, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT or AMD/ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 – 256MB VRAM
    • DirectX: Version 9.0c
    • Storage: 3 GB available space

For example - this is on the low end https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.G7WEK.001-Acer-Aspire-R5-471T_2000004.html

This would be high end - https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/20FQ0041UK-Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Yoga_1932211.html

Note that usually a graphics card is not with these - you would need this for better graphics

You could go extreme http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/microsoft-surface-book-with-performance-base-silver-10161178-pdt.html

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/microsoft-surface-book-with-performance-base-silver-10161173-pdt.html

So your question is open ended

There are 2 in 1 laptops (convertible) that will absolutely not be good for football manager 2017

And there are some that will play it ok - and of course some that will play it great.

Hello everyone,

I am looking for a new laptop to play football manager on. I would like the 3D Match Engine to run with no lags whatsoever and want the game very as smoothly as possible whilst having a large number of leagues.

The highest price I would go up to is about £900 and I am a real novice with this so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think I am going to get this laptop which after the discount works out to be £989.10.  Has good a processor, graphics card and SSD

i think its a cracking laptop and after spending time on FM definitely worth it

Sorry - I just meant that it's difficult to remember exactly what was said - but I'd definitely find one of the best available at the time of posting - and wouldn't lead anyone astray in terms of parting with that amount of cash.

I'd certainly recommend a Macbook Pro for you to consider.

However, it's my opinion they are overpriced and underpowered (an overheat for Football Manager).

It's always been fact that you can buy laptops cheaper - with more power, and better performance.

If you do need a Macbook Pro then what's your budget?

Are you looking for 13 inch or 15 inch?

If so on either, as long as processor is greater than 2.2ghz, has 4gb+ RAM then it will play FM.

A 15 inch Macbook Pro is £2,439.00

https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro?product=MPTR2B/A&step=config#

Just for comparison - this Windows Laptop is better, in my opinion, and cheaper. £969.97

Hi I'm looking to buy a new laptop and wondered if anyone could help me. I only play in 2d or even commentry so im not bothered about a high end graphics card. Most important thing is having a few leagues/countries active while also being quick processing through the week. I assume ive got to go for one with plenty of ram and a good processor so if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated! Budget is around 4 or 500.

Thanks.

For the price I think it's ok. A decent prosessor, SSD and 8GB RAM are fine. If you can afford that price range, it seems like a good laptop for FM.  :)

As for the 9,5 Hr battery life.... HAAHHAHAHAHAHH. Maybe with one lucky test at the factory with minimal currency and only BIOS loaded. :D

I forgot to add a couple of points.

When buying a laptop you should always try it by yourself if you have the chance. That way you can really tell if the screen is readable from different angles and how it "feels" to use the laptop. Just reading specs is a bit misleading. And because they don't name the maximum resolution in the specs in gills17's case, looking at the more detailed specification reveals that it only has a resolution of 1366 x 768. That is ok but these days I'd consider a 1920 x 1080 laptop if that laptop was my only device (no PC or larger eternal screen available).

Looking at the picture now, the laptop gills17 was considering has a standard square touchscreen in the lower left side. My first laptop had a smaller one centered in the middle like this one. As I got used to it during a couple of years, it was very hard to use a bigger one without my hands screwing with the touchpad all the time. :D

So, it's about the amount of money you can "invest", your goals and the expectations for the laptop (specifications) and finally, personal preference.

Problem is when you got to the stores - you can see them for sure, and pick one that looks the fanciest.

But for FM it's all about the processor, it's speed and performance. Secondly it's about how much RAM the computer has (minimum in my book is 8gb). Thirdly the hard drive - an SSD is a must in my book too - however, if you want to get costs down then consider a hard drive with at least 7200 rpm.

However, there's another factor - graphics - and if this is important to you then then there are low end, mid range and high end performance graphics card.  FM doesn't need anything too fancy in terms of graphics, as they are quite rudimentary - but we don't know what future FM installations will have.

All in all - don't skimp on the Processor or the RAM - and if graphics are important to you - don't skimp on that either. Most people do come here because they have no idea what is the best value for their budget - some have a budget of 300, some of 500, someone came on before with a budget of 2000.  All we can do is cater to the budget, what they want to get most from the game (lots of leagues or graphics, or both) etc.

All this talk about trackpads and all that - they can be turned off so that you don't interfer with them.

If you can get to somewhere to look at the laptop you want to buy - then by all means go and do it.

But heed the specs that are dished out here.

Good post, Smurf. That really summed it up, especially for those who are buying their first laptop for FM.

For me, if I get used to something, it is kind of hard to "fall back" you know. Once you have used a laptop/PC that has a good SSD, using one without SSD feels a bit akward.

Hey Guys and Gals!

I hope you're all well and not burning too much in this UK weather?

I can't decide on a laptop/convertible. I have seen this one below; can anyone recommend a cheaper alternative that could run FM smoothly on 5-6 nations/large database and 2D gameplay. I'm also a student and wish for it to be 14" maximum so I can write essays on the go with it.

I have to ask: Do laptops (or other electronics) only have 3 month warranty in UK? That sounds kind of lame.

As for you problem, I can't name a model but I think if you go for a cheaper one, you have to accept a screen that has a poorer resolution than 1920 x 1080 or a laptop that has no SSD.

It's a pretty low end graphcis card - if you're wanting to play with 3d graphics then I'd only put it on low settings.

I don't see much else out there for that price -overall it's quite good.

Hey guys, having see a load of different laptops here and different recommendations, I need something simple that will be able to play FM17 plus any future instalments of the game that may come out.

I don't really understand the specs and stuff, just need something that will allow me to play FM and use general MS Office packages and surf the web.

Any help is appreciated, not really looking to spend more than £500 if I can help it.

Thanks in advanced :)

It's pretty difficult to futureproof a computer on a 500 quid budget

In saying that - this one is decent enough if you wan to play the 3D matches on low settings

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/80QH008TUK-Lenovo-IdeaPad-300_2100914.html

If you don't want to play 3D matches and only play 2D or just commentary

This has slightly better processor - and it's a newer processor - so matches your futureproof spec

https://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/NX.GKQEK.009-Acer-Aspire-ES1-572_2079459.html

However, it has no graphics card so playing 3D matches on any setting would be a chore.
