[FM19] Third Time Lucky

Recommended Posts

Having spent FM18 doing a quiet attempt of my own at Lollujo's non-league to legend save, where I started at Braintree and took a journey via Billericay and Grimsby to end up at Norwich, I've decided to share my latest save with both FMCU and our friends over on CSE.

For FM19, I will be attempting the dafuge challenge. The basic idea of this challenge is to take over one of the clubs that is promoted into the Vanarama North and South divisions at the end of the first season, and eventually take them through the Conference and Football League, before winning both the Premier League and the Champions League.

This is my 3rd attempt at this challenge. In FM14, I got FC United as far as the Championship. In FM16, I managed to get Dorchester Town as far as winning the Premier League. Both times I ran out of time to complete the challenge - I insist on upgrading to the latest FM as soon as I can!

For my attempt in FM19, I am heading along the A14 from my home in Ipswich to Northamptonshire and the town of Kettering.

The rules of the dafuge challenge allow me to load as many leagues as I like. As I have a decent computer, I've gone for the following:

Kettering will start the 2019-20 season in the Vanarama North...

A decent start, but a fair amount of luck.

It's good to be in the playoff positions even this early.

Some very good performances. The match against Leamington was particularly fun to watch.

Yet Brackley's form is even better.

Out of the cup, but almost perfect in the league despite truly awful finishing.

The draw against Bradford seemed to knock the wind out of our sails. Never seen so many consecutive 0-0 draws!

But Brackley couldn't really take advantage.

Simply too many draws. York and King's Lynn were away games against relatively good opposition, but we should have easily beaten a Halesowen side who are struggling at the bottom of the table.

Brackley remain hot on our heels.

We were already clear favourites but the front line seemed to struggle under the pressure. Once we lifted the trophy, their confidence came back and Solihull fell easily.

And we'll win the league by at least 7 points.

Kettering Town - 2019/20 (Season 1) Review - National League North

League - A strong start got us into the top spot early on and we never looked back, although Brackley weren't far behind for most of the season. A comfortable victory in the end sees us promoted back into Kettering's 'traditional' spot in the National League. There were however quite a few 0-0 draws, far more than I've ever seen in FM before.

Cups- Identical story in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy - knocking out lower league sides before losing to National League opposition.

Key Players

Emmanuel Dieseruvwe - Defenders struggled to cope with him almost as much as I struggled to pronounce his name! Emmanuel lead the attack comfortably with 25 goals in the league.

James Spruce - A loan signing who has already declined the chance to return next year, Spruce was often on hand when Emmanuel was having an off-day.

Paul White - A very solid goalkeeper at this level - White managed to keep clean sheets in more than half of our league games. His excellent goalkeeping saved our skin on more than one occasion.

Best Match

v Solihull Moors (A) - 6-0

An excellent performance where we looked like scoring every single time we had an attack. Especially pleasing as it was away from home.

Worst Match

v Alfreton (A) - 0-1

This early season defeat worried me that we were doomed to a playoff finish, but it turned out to be our only one all season.

Some tight wins against other front runners, The Bromley win is particularly pleasing as we spent the majority of the match down to 10 men.

A string of good performances, but a lot more goals conceded than I would like. All it takes is a game or two where we fail to score...

Way too  many draws! I'm not at all disappointed to be out of the FA Trophy - I do not have the squad to challenge for it.

All the draws are allowing Chesterfield to edge closer.

A very disappointing start to the new year, but Chesterfield's form has been equally poor.

And in fact the gap has grown to 7 points, with Wrexham now our nearest challengers.

Two bore draws against promotion rivals, before getting 4 points from games we probably deserved to lose.

A very mixed March. At times we were brilliant going forward, and now that Pryce has found his scoring form we are actually putting a lot more chances away.

The gap is down to 5, but had been as low as 3.

With 4 games to go, things aren't certain, but Wrexham seem intent on throwing it away even as we stop scoring.

I was pleased to get this right after the season ended rather than having to wait until June. The squad building begins.

But this is way too soon. We'll now be trapped in a tiny stadium for the rest of the save.

Kettering Town - 2020/21 (Season 2) Review - National League

League - The 2 point margin doesn't flatter us. We were not head and shoulders above the rest, but a good early season left the chasing pack with too much to do

FA Cup - A decent run earned us some cash.

FA Trophy - Wasn't too upset about this.

Key Players

Sol Pryce - Loanee kicked on late in the season to make sure we won the title

D'Margio Wright-Phillips - Ian Wright's grandson isn't quite the same level of player, but excellent for me nontheless.

Emmanuel Dieseruvwe - Still a key part of my side.

Luke Coddington - Mid-season signing who turned out to be a large improvement.

Best Match

v Sutton Utd (A) - 6-3 - For once nearly ever chance went in.

Worst Match

v Tranmere Rovers (H) - 2-3 - Awful defending at the end cost us what should have been a victory.

Good, but without being brilliant. We were lucky to take the win against Crawley, and the home loss to Rochdale was simply unacceptable if we're going to be serious contenders.

We actually  dropped off the top of the table at one point, but we're holding on for now.
