He delivers even on the international stage - can't say that for the other GOAT contender Messi who has got better team mates on both the club and international stage.

That the same Messi who won the Golden Ball in 2014, yeah?

I think he's fantastic. Great entertainer, brilliant footballer, always look forward to watching him even if he is a self-absorbed narcissist. I'm certainly not a 'hater' whatever that is.

The only reason I brought up the GOAT thread is because the 3rd Spain goal highlighted what I said about him in there, i.e, I believe he's too tactically lazy and disinterested in doing any defensive work at all to be considered a complete player and GOAT.

except hes done nothing special to score those goals, hes not had a superb, unsaveable shot or an immense bit of skill or a wonderful piece of movement, hes had a penalty which someone else would have taken and a shot that the keeper should have saved

To follow up on this.

A saying that's roughly translated as:

What would've happened if it had happened?

Penalty was on him, he basically got it by himself.
Was fouled for the third goal.

He made a great assist to Guedes at 1-0, but Guedes bottled it.
Nobody cares about the way goals are scored, it's the world cup, winning is the only thing that matters.

I'll always remember situation from 2007, Inzaghi scoring 2 CL final goals from 1 shot. Other one deflected of his ass. But who cares?

On the GOAT topic I wrote about Messi scoring 0 knockout goals in World Cups and 1 knockout goal in Copa America.

And yet he gets the 2014 WC MVP award, with 0 goals and 1 assist in 4 knockout games (2ET included). And his defense conceded 1 goal. And yet he carried them.

I certainly remember Ronaldo tracking back against Bayern and Real in this year's CL.

Even though he looks like a superhuman, he's 33 and he has to choose his battles these days.

How hurt you must be to write this?

He earned a penalty out from absolutely nothing. Just check the replay since he got the ball. He earned a free kick from nothing again. Placed an unstoppable penalty. Placed an unstoppable free kick.

And also scored a third goal against the best gk. Yes, that was a mistake from De Gea. But the shot was very hard.

"Do so little" :idiot:

Wait a sec..... he posted a smiley!!

Did not realise he has over 50 career free kick goals. The way people go on about it you would think he has just 6

If his International ratio still applies, that's 50 from 2250 attempts! :D

Roberto Carlos levels of ball-hogging

Ronaldo’s performance was absolutely exceptional. Unreal, it had everything. Won the pen, scored the pen, won the FK and scored it and scored another one. Created good chances for teammates as well. A truly heroic performance.

Saying he did nothing is bollocks anyway, first half especially he was getting Portugal on good counter attacks by playing as a CF with flick ons/holding it up.

% conversion is no match for hard numbers. I would take over 50 career free kicks any day even if they come from 20,000 shots over finishing with 25 out of 26 shots

Difference between being Ronaldo and the Lyon Juninho

I did comment on his performance as soon as the mistake happened. I’m happy since it shows he is far more comfortable playing in England and will stay at united forever. He won’t make any mistakes like that at united.

149, which is actually less than Ronaldo, who has 151. I think some Egyptian guy had tonnes of caps, maybe you're thinking of him?

He had a few years when he scored from FKs almost every week (felt like it at least) and got compared to Juninho over and over. But then something changed and the last 3 or 4 years the FK goals have dried up almost completely, it's strange really.

Ronaldo is amazing and saved Portugal tonight obviously. And I'd never expect him to put a defensive shift in but that Spain 3rd goal is completly not on. Hatrrick or not he deserves critisism for that. Obviously the free kick brushes over it but if he had closed down some what more there, then he could have been celebrating a late winner from a free kick not an equaliser.

Nope, just needs to show a bit of interest in tracking back once in a while, put in the odd tackle, cover for a team mate, that sort of thing.

If Ronaldo was wasting his time and energy doing that as a coach I'd be furious. That's why teams have specialists. By that measure neither, Messi, Maradona, Pele etc. are the GOAT.

You'd rather he stood motionless, a few yards away from a completely unmarked fullback, inside his own half, showing no interest in picking him up, simply because you have other more defensively focussed players in the team?

Ok then.

It's not like it's one isolated event, it's a career-long pattern. You build the team around the guy, so it's fair enough to give clear roles and structures to allow him freedom to do his thing, but there's no excuse whatsoever for sheer laziness and diva behaviour, which is what it is with CR. There was no reason at all for him not to pick up free opposition players within a few yards of himself. That's just sheer contempt and indifference. Not a good look no matter how talented you are.

He slowed down in last few years with FKs but still up there as the top 10 in the world starts at 62 so he must be close

Don't know what to make of that. Spain deserved to win imo.

Also wouldn't say Ronaldo's performance was that good, but his fanboys will just say 'hattrick' and there's not you can do

Who care about the "good look" it is about results.

Attitudes like that are why some people laud the grafter who fails over the diva strutting about but keeps on winning. Output over input is more important in competitive sport and if your output is world class i don't care if you are doing it standing on one leg blindfolded while jerking off.

His all round game was top stuff. Held ball up, slowed play down, countered with pace, constant threat.

People will forget that he layed one on a plate to Guedes first half and his fantastic first time flick that took 2 defenders out and played Guedes through one on one against Ramos? just to mess up again :D

When you look at it from the statistical standpoint, it wasn't.
Penalty goal, awful goalkeeping mistake and a free-kick goal.

But without him Portugal would've probably lost in handicap.

Some players' sheer presence makes a difference.
Take for example Buffon. Over the past few years he's been like 50% worse than his prime years, but yet him standing in the goal is intimidating for the opposition and gives his defense a sense of security.
Same goes for Ronaldo. His defenders are so afraid of him that he creates so much space for his teammates (Guedes making awful plays twice, where a class player would've scored) and they make unnecessary fouls (penalties and two dangerous free-kicks).

Being completely ignored. Didn’t chase back on the halfway line gets magnified times 10.

He did what he did to help his team to a draw against a much more superior team - not much else he can do really.

Again, I need to be clear about the context here. This is simply in relation to my point about him being inherently lazy. It's not a criticism of his overall performance, he was outstanding in all respects bar one tonight. The simple fact is though, had he bothered to do the basics of picking up a free man that just happens to be near you, it's likely his side would have won 3-2 rather than drawn. To be clear, I think he's fantastic, I love watching him play, but it's frustrating that he refuses to do simple things even if they require no extra effort. He's an oustanding player who deserves the plaudits he receives, but if he simply showed a willingness to even contemplate doing the bare minimum of defensive work then he'd unquestionably deserve to be talked about as GOAT. The contempt for that side of the game, as brilliant as he is in so many other ways, spoils that.

The reason it's contemptuous is twofold. First, it's an insult to your team mates, but equally, all goals are the same whether you're preventing them, creating them or scoring them. He'll tear forward at olympic sprinter speed to get on a counter, as he did to create the chance Guedes fluffed, but won't put in the basest effort to pick up an opposition player and prevent a goal. One is glamourous, the other not, yet the net outcome is the same. Why will he do one and not the other? It makes no sense from the perspective of trying to win football matches, which is what you seem to believe is the most important factor.

So to sum up.
