It's been almost a year since I moved away from Thailand to Micronesia. The lifestyle here has been a shock to the system and I have been in contact with Paul Watson who put Micronesian football on the map after his quest to become the youngest National football manager was achieved on the island and his advice has been integral to me not throwing in the towel at the first site of the fungi-infested pitch at the Yap Sports Complex or the overly-lethargic training sessions I witnessed as a result of the players Betel leaf addictions.

But, finally I have been handed the opportunity I was hoping for. In March 2018 I have been offered my first managerial job at the helm of:

Nimgil Youth Organization

5a8872d5d4f68_NYO-ClubDetails.thumb.PNG.7c5ce943ce86cca56e23d0d32d0e7120.PNG

In the 2017 season Nimgil Youth finished 6th in the YFA Island Wide League and 4th in the YAP Games. The board are expecting me to get the team to 'be competitive' across all competitions, but I imagine I will have to beat the benchmark set the last season if I want to avoid speculation around my job status.

The Squad

I have inherited 5 players who stand out, all of whom are 17-yo. The core of the team will be created around these guys:

1. Paul Suldan, an Advanced Playmaker, is the squad's key player. He is also one of 3 influential players in the team's heirarchy.

5a888c2f0a6b0_NYO-PaulSuldan.thumb.PNG.e8571fe03632f27cf147675e42ff80a7.PNG

2. Joseph James on the left wing.

3. Sebastien Paul at the heart of defence.

5a88945ef0275_NYO-SebPaul.thumb.PNG.2cec3423d5a83f1b5a98baa1dffd55c5.PNG

4. Rodrigo Pluhs is also an Advanced Playmaker, but can play as a striker too. I may consider retraining him as a Deep Lying Playmaker.

5a88945e0e8d6_NYO-RodrigoPluhs.thumb.PNG.9b88e15104f5f18aa98827db439529ac.PNG

5. Gibson Henry up top. A lack of acceleration will hold him back.

5a88945c2e051_NYO-GibsonHenry.thumb.PNG.136a801396651dd0d214d88f88825f98.PNG

We are short of a decent Goalkeeper and any sort of quality in depth, so once I have concluded the meeting with my board and backroom staff, I will start to explore the talent of the country.

March 2018 Overview

Pre-Season

Nimgil Youth Organization 0 - 0 Nimgil Youth Organization U20's

5a89760a5bbe4_Ach-ArmchairExpert.thumb.PNG.031ff71e2ad7cda3b80cab726ac8253e.PNG

The next day I dedicated to finding some talent to ignite the team.

5a897565bb9a5_Ach-HesSigned.PNG.97851a0853a94942bd2e7ee860003b75.PNG

I signed five new players, 3 of whom are full-backs who I will be re-training to wing backs. The best of the bunch is Rodrigo Dadius who can play on either side of defence. Thomas Gilmete will provide strength in central midfield and I have gambled on a young GK in Jaysty Paul. With the 16-yo's technical stats and height, I am very concerned with the CA my coach has given him as he was signed to be my 1st choice 'keeper. Poor Decisions, Anticipation & Agility might hinder his ability.

5a897568c1e06_NYO-RodrigoDadius.thumb.PNG.afdf5e50054f9bdc39671ebcb5c34dc4.PNG5a897569d189c_NYO-ThomasGilmete.thumb.PNG.969207e840f92f912f37ee7664fde61e.PNG5a8975672d2d3_NYO-JaystyPaul.thumb.PNG.87234e3ec7ab877f47b1822cb0682dd2.PNG

With the new guys ready for action in time for the second of three friendlies, I was ready for a bit more positivity. But we only just about managed to escape an even more embarrassing scoreline as they had a 93rd minute would-be-winner disallowed for offside. Another red card too!

Nimgil Youth Organization 2 - 2 Nimgil Youth Organization U20's

5a8979e2edc35_NYO-Fr2Overview.PNG.151e661bd8a47bb5b2b94ee8e98db42b.PNG5a8979e42a63c_NYO-Fr2Stats.PNG.f2be320925f85b0066e498820adf85f4.PNG

I filled out our backroom staff with the best that Micronesia has to offer to try to up the levels of training, but we managed to compound ourselves to the embarrassing loss we narrowly escaped last time out with the last friendly of Pre-Season. The only positive I can take from the final game is that we managed to finish the game with 11-men.

Nimgil Youth Organization 3 - 4 Nimgil Youth Organization U20's

5a8b1f1e04f05_NYO-Fr3Overview.PNG.c48d8272694c84f931f33730587fbd7d.PNG5a8b1f1f09650_NYO-Fr3Stats.PNG.d75defa222dae0271a2d23d61654dfb7.PNG

A terrible win-less off season doesn't bode well for what's to come.

YFA Island Wide League

My first competitive match and we continued our poor disciplinary record with yet another red card! We had two massive clear cut chances in the first half which were squandered to poor finishing and in a game that we dominated it was gutting to drop 2 points to their only shot on target in the whole game which came from a horrendous, glaring defensive error from one our CB's.

Nimgil Youth 1 - 1 Gagil

April 2018 Overview

Outer Islands 2 - 3 Nimgil Youth

5a8f35e76726b_Ach-FirstVictory.PNG.11f1506c1e6744c14011805f6a644f97.PNG

5a8f357a634dd_Ach-ComebackKing.thumb.PNG.6b49d51c8dadccc804b0968378082d13.PNG

An even first half saw us out on our luck as we hit the woodwork twice and had nothing to show against a sublime half-volleyed finish and a cheap give-away of a penalty at the break. But the second half is why I love football (manager).

It took us until the 77th minute to get a goal back. A long ball forward was knicked off of the defender, in what was quite clearly a foul, but we rode the luck we missed out on in the first half as a simple pass square and a simple finish and the deficit was halved. Then as the game entered the 90th minute, a free-kick from out wide was cleared to a lingering midfielder on the edge of the box, whose volley got lost in the crowd in front of the goal, before being poked home to dramatically level the game!!!

Then in the 96th minute (of 5 added on), we drove forward down the left, swung in a deadly ball across the six yard line from the byline and grabbed what looked impossible at half time: a winner!

What a way to get our first win.

5a8f34991050b_NYO-LF2Overview.PNG.2f98cf0afd32692f8d6fe30997994821.PNG5a8f349a1a103_NYO-LF2Stats.PNG.ebaefe3c9932f518e69b1fdd5f3a53e5.PNG

Nimgil Youth 3 - 1 Weloy Strikers

After a lapse in concentration at the beginning of the game, we took control and out-played them in the first half to get ahead finally on the half-time whistle. It took us longer than it should have to get further ahead, but we finished with a healthy lead.

Oh, and the 'keeper Jaysty Paul is taking (and scoring) our penalties!

5a8f349c9778a_NYO-LF3Overview.PNG.516b5e5977cd5202b008f767465df719.PNG5a8f349d600e4_NYO-LF3Stats.PNG.1287e07a90f8967ff814e975d3be1403.PNG

G&B Club 3 - 1 Nimgil Youth

After the initial unbeaten run, we were convincingly put to the sword in our first defeat. A late consolation goal was the only positive.

5a8f349e319e2_NYO-LF4Overview.PNG.27207a18bd0debaa77ac935481bffc8e.PNG5a8f34a010d2e_NYO-LF4Stats.PNG.84936ccda3f54a3959529cc715e83ae2.PNG

Maap 1 - 0 Nimgil Youth

We were completely outplayed by Maap.

We managed to hold on until giving away a late penalty after going down to 10-men early in the second half. Maap look like the team to beat as their play was a lot smoother and way more succinct than any of our other opponents have been. It'll be interesting to see how they do this season.

Two wins and two losses in an up and down month.

May 2018 Overview

Nimgil Youth 1 - 0 Fanif

5a8f4ae199879_Ach-CleanSheet.thumb.PNG.1e85133d454a24655fb4a9c2960d47c5.PNG

Our first clean sheet as we edged a tightly contested game.

5a8f4a7826bdd_NYO-LF6Overview.PNG.9407bb37ae66e0a87676532c29fd57f8.PNG5a8f4a796814c_NYO-LF6Stats.PNG.2124a9a7be5e6c6a224ac57043079a5a.PNG

I decided we needed some greater depth across midfield as we were losing the ball a lot, so a change of tactic and bringing in Jonah James will hopefully help us solidify in the center of the park.

5a8f4fa550ade_NYO-JonahJames.thumb.PNG.6d4125d8799ec27fc87ebd59c14bc7cb.PNG

Tamil 1 - 3 Nimgil Youth

We scored all of our three shots on target to run out comfortable winners.

5a90503c47bb3_Ach-HesSold.PNG.e47745f99568e0f86c1b67bf9383ac63.PNG

Our CB Mike Ligohr has been lured by Gagil.

Gagil 3 - 1 Nimgil Youth

New signing Jonah James' late red card and Jaysty Paul's missed penalty added to the insult of losing against Gagil with our old CB playing well in their ranks. At times we couldn't get out of our own half and had trouble clearing and keeping the ball and if it weren't for their poor finishing, the scoreline could've been a lot worse!

5a8f4a7b916cc_NYO-LF8Overview.PNG.d932fb614e0c4d82ee19b1c50c0500a5.PNG5a8f4a7c79f95_NYO-LF8Stats.PNG.2cebe1c71c2181dcf820e34188fe8ed2.PNG

Nimgil Youth 3 - 0 Outer Islands

Jaysty Paul quickly got back to converting penalties after his miss at the end of the last fixture as the whole team rebounded to smash Outer Islands, although JP could've got a brace if he had held his nerve. Two from four penalties for the GK isn't terrible though.

There must be something about the James family, as Marlon James, a sturdy centre-back, joins Jonah and Joseph amongst the teams ranks.

June 2018 Overview

Weloy Strikers 1 - 3 Nimgil Youth

We were dominant. Besides the evenly matched stats, we always looked more threatening going forward and our only match in June ended in an emphatic 3 points.

5a904eea02fd4_NYO-LF10Overview.PNG.3b08b854ef178b0b8adc86427aae269c.PNG5a904eeae16a6_NYO-LF10Stats.PNG.96ea43bec3292b8a71e5d95d6f76fe76.PNG

As we are about to enter a break for the YAP Games, we sit in second in the league, 3 points behind Maap who have been on a blistering run of 7 wins out of 7 in a row and are definitely the team to beat!

July 2018 Overview

YAP Games

Nimgil Youth 1 - 1 Gagil

A very stale draw again with Gagil, not too dissimilar to the opening day of the season. A lot of chances, but terrible finishing from both sides and a draw probably the fairest result.

5a9058a705c27_NYO-CF1Overview.PNG.e84bce5e00145303ef4423ffc6491fdd.PNG5a9058a7c6274_NYO-CF1Stats.PNG.8f112b50e7299436ae51bee770604b28.PNG

Nimgil Youth 3 - 1 Tamil

We asserted ourselves in the group with 3 goals in the last half-hour to turn around a first-half deficit against 10 men.

August 2018 Overview

Fanif 0 - 0 Nimgil Youth

A stalemate in a game where we had a player advantage for over half an hour! Our momentum and attacking play was hindered by a litter of fouls and ultimately we will feel like this is two points dropped.

5a905a884b4f5_NYO-CF3Overview.PNG.5dff47b38620fbd5aa597ed13fefad6f.PNG5a905a893c86c_NYO-CF3Stats.PNG.009c92edceb81d2f8a33b4e77246544c.PNG

Gagil 1 - 1 Nimgil Youth

Another missed penalty from the GK, but Fridson Silbanuz rescued another point for us late on.

Nimgil Youth 0 - 4 Fanif

A thumping.

A win at bottom of the group would have put us through with a game to spare, but we were blown out of the water and never looked threatening at all.

5a905a8bc651a_NYO-CF5Overview.PNG.82ab0735a39ef78e2c411be7f731b71a.PNG5a905a8cd4db9_NYO-CF5Stats.PNG.e901bb92c0aa0ded4255b5e46da906db.PNG

We now sit 3rd and need at least a draw in our last game to progress from the group.

September 2018 Overview

Tamil 2 - 2 Nimgil Youth

A fantastic start to the game was soured and almost ruined by a second half fight back from Fanif who would've taken our qualification spot with another goal, so I am happy that we held on when it mattered to finish 2nd in a tight group.

YAP Games Semi-Final

Maap 2 - 1 Nimgil Youth

Because of the seeding rules, we inevitably played Maap who steam-rolled their group to finish top. And once again they proved too much to handle and we were out!

YAP Games 3rd Place Playoff

Gagil p0 - 0 Nimgil Youth

Yet another draw against Gagil and another red card for us too. We held on to draw with 10-men but couldn't hold our nerve in the shootout resulting in us finishing 4th in the Cup - the same as my predecessor.

YFA Island Wide League

Nimgil Youth 0 - 1 G&B Club

We came back to the league with a hangover as we were limited to a single shot on target as the pressure we had built up against Maap lessened.

October 2018 Overview

Nimgil Youth 0 - 1 Maap

Another horrible loss to Maap. This one made even worse by them clinching top spot (but not the title) against us. They will now have the best seeding for the knockout stage of the league season.

Fanif 2 - 2 Nimgil Youth

A very tense, congested fixture with a few moments of brilliance. A draw was a fair result, but we had to win our last game to cement 2nd place now.

Nimgil Youth 1 - 0 Tamil

A good win against a weak Tamil side. We didn't get our scoring boots on, but it never looked likely we would concede all game.

Nimgil Youth p1 - 1 G&B Club

We're into the finaaaaaal! We held our nerve after missing the first penalty to go on to win after sloppily losing the lead by giving away a penalty late on.  Jaysty Paul the hero with two HUGE saves!

December 2018 Overview

YFA Island Wide League Final

Maap v. Nimgil Youth

Spoiler

We held on to draw 0-0.

Or so I thought:

We didn't deserve to win it, but we definitely didn't deserve the devastation of losing to a set piece with 10 seconds to go. Football (manager) can be so cruel. :(

March 2019

Pre-Season

In the off-season there has been a lot of interest in our players, but with squad morale good I have managed to keep hold of everyone (so far!) In terms of bringing players in though, I have opted to bring in a Defensive Mid and a Striker:

5a91cde810a7e_NYO-LexterDadius.thumb.PNG.378943f6b1d190ecd326a8e6f9eb1a46.PNG5a91cde6aa405_NYO-ChrisKariti.thumb.PNG.34cc4227a8ff77c6f9625da99cf6507d.PNG

Our friendlies have again been all against our U20's as I set two evenly matched teams against one another and then tweak tactics as we come towards the beginning of the domestic season.

Nimgil Youth Organization 0 - 1 Nimgil Youth Organization U20's

Nimgil Youth Organization 3 - 1 Nimgil Youth Organization U20's

Our first fixture is against reigning champs Maap so we have to be ready!

YFA Island Wide League

Nimgil Youth 1 - 1 Maap

A solid draw against a much better side! We held on by the skin of our teeth at times, with them rattling post and bar late on. New signing Chris Kariti got a debut goal after 3 mins too.

Gagil 0 - 2 Nimgil Youth

We were playing well in the first half and with a few changes at the break, we took the lead. We didn't put the game beyond doubt until late on - when Kariti was through on goal, he was brought down outside of the box and a red card for the offender which then led to a penalty and Jaysty Paul doubled our lead for a solid victory.

Nimgil Youth 0 - 0 Weloy Strikers

We were on the back foot a lot, but the game fizzled out to a bore draw.

Fanif 1 - 0 Nimgil Youth

Our first loss of the season; after going one-nil down and missing a penalty early on we were very lucky not to be two-down at half time when their forward hit the bar from a yard out with an empty net! We had the lions share of the chance, but again, finishing let us down.

At the end of match day 4, the league standings are very tight:

May 2019

Nimgil Youth 1 - 1 Outer Islands

We played the better football, but we are playing the pass rather than shooting at the moment! The teams confidence is not great and it showed.

5a92948b8cc2f_NYO-LF5Overview.PNG.7d7827a5f3201a4672b5e587bdcdd803.PNG5a92948c6d44b_NYO-LF5Stats.PNG.f7a2c87ef69098dcf749bdad1013db28.PNG

G&B Club 2 - 2 Nimgil Youth

We were very lucky to come back and draw this game after a dismal opening 10 minutes, but once we were up against 10-men the equaliser was always on the cards. Kasim Jack should be credited for the own goal as it was his volley that hit the post and flashed across goal, clipping the heels of the gk and ending up levelling the game.

Tamil 4 - 1 Nimgil Youth

We hit the post at 0-0, then had a man sent off after half an hour at 1-down and despite still creating a decent amount of chances, we were the masters of our own demise. Their second goal was a clearance from our defender ricocheting off the forward towards goal and the keeper couldn't get enough on it to parry it around the post. We got one back, but any hope of a comeback were thrown away when we gave away a very soft penalty from a corner. Then ten minutes later we gave away a penalty off the ball from a defender backing into and tripping an advancing forward. Both were dispatched and the scoreline was a lot heavier than our play deserved.

The players are far from happy with the latest results and whilst I've been berating them on the pitch, they're now turning against me off of it.

5a929496d9ecf_NYO-SquadMutiny.thumb.PNG.eab8f88220890347f091c9d4af3f5b1d.PNG

Aaaaand to make things even tougher, 11 players have just been called up for the Pacific Games. (The Micronesian U23 squad compete as the Pacific Games is the Olympics for the small Oceanic nations.) So we won't have our first team available for the next two fixtures.

Maap 3 - 1 Nimgil Youth

We held on 'til half time in a feisty affair, but ultimately paid the price of fielding a weaker team and the unwanted record against Maap continues - it is now 5 losses and one draw in 6 games against them.

Nimgil Youth 0 - 0 Gagil

A bore draw is a good result with the team we fielded.

5a9294943d5e6_NYO-LF9Overview.PNG.de566ed9e71734b05ceeb09bfde2fa82.PNG5a9294953773f_NYO-LF9Stats.PNG.55e3b02b76491b809f4db7f01883d70a.PNG

5a92948aaaa33_NYO-LeagueStandingsMay.PNG.33864b2bc1900fbbdd28cff184f006f5.PNG

But there is now a huge gap until our next league fixture, with the National U23's competing in the Pacific Games in June and the YAP Games for all the YAP-Island Micronesian teams in July and August, hopefully by September we have forgotten all about the poor form we're in now and will push for the qualification spots!

Nimgil Youth 2 - 0 Tamil

Paul Suldan got man of the match in a convincing win after scoring and grabbing an assist. Kariti also played well - scoring twice, but one was disallowed for offside. Overall things looked a lot more positive than they have done recently!

Nimgil Youth 1 - 3 Fanif

We didn't do ourselves justice with consistency being a really big problem at the moment. Jaysty Paul again missing out on a brace as his second penalty was easily saved. Red cards are the only consistent thing we've got at the moment!

Tamil 1 - 0 Nimgil Youth

A devastating result that has lowered morale even further. We deserved to win it and to lose so late on was so painful to see after so many clear cut chances were thrown away earlier in the game. It's put us 5 points adrift with two games remaining and progression in the competition seems near impossible now.

We rounded off the group with a win against a better side. But with nothing riding on the result, both teams were pretty much coasting.

Back to the league and no change in fortunes. We were the better side, but for conceding a penalty and a cheeky direct free-kick.

We're five points off of a playoff spot with 4 games to go and I do not think I will be allowed a 3rd season if I don't mount a title challenge! The pressure's on!

October 2019

Nimgil Youth 1 - 1 Fanif

A draw dents our play-off hopes and the board are not gonna be happy.

5a92ee1e3eda1_NYO-LF11Overview.PNG.78d68cd273c54ddef6dac405032f0dae.PNG5a92ee1f5b4b8_NYO-LF11Stats.PNG.e26babc0c89e21e52fcdb7304ac247b0.PNG

And sure enough, I have been dragged in front of the owners and a promise of 11 points in the next 5 games is the only thing that'll save me! But as there are 3 games left 'til the end of the season, I will only need 5 points to keep my job, rebuild across the off-season and ensure we win both of our opening fixtures next season.

Stirker, Chris Kariti has decided to leave for a new chapter in his career to bottom of the league Gagil.

I have decided to gamble and switch tactic to a 4-3-3 in an all-or-nothing attempt as my time with Nimgil Youth looks to be coming to a close but for a miracle?!

But I might have trouble if all of my strikers leave? Johnson Jim, who scored our last goal, has decided to join Outer Islands, who we are up against next.

Outer Islands 1 - 2 Nimgil Youth

A 91st minute winner grabs us our first win in the league in 10 games! Jaysty Paul our GK, gifted them a goal with a heavy, loose touch and then a defensive error lead to our equaliser soon after but Henry's last gasp finish looped over the 'keeper from 20 yards out crashing off the bar, the goal line and the bar again before settling in the back of the net.

5a92f5312cd13_NYO-LF12Overview.PNG.c2aa3bab12b768a808074727937f8ca5.PNG5a92f53232515_NYO-LF12Stats.PNG.74a4cf9ac297d62fdcc95da5f05eec8a.PNG

I think it may be mathematically impossible for us to reach the top 4 (and a play-off spot) now though. But at least I have my job still! I need a further 8 points from the next 4 matches too.

Joseph James has left for Gagil as the slow exodus continues. He's been a constant starter on the left wing and is the first big loss.

Nimgil Youth 3 - 1 G&B Club

But the departures haven't hindered us. Henry got two in a minute to turn around an early deficit and we pushed on to extend the lead before holding on for the remainder of the game. Back to back wins will be huge for confidence (and my job security - now I need 5 points from the next 3 games.)

5a93069955ecd_NYO-LF13Overview.PNG.bcccee61e062233ee7e5107431c720fb.PNG5a93069a8e78f_NYO-LF13Stats.PNG.2d0b139946503feb404adc26ab9dcbf3.PNG

We are up against Tamil in our last match, and Weloy v. G&B will be played after us. The chances are super slim and we need to destroy Tamil to increase our GD to have any shout of landing in the top 4, so it'll be all out attack in the next game!

November 2019

Nimgil Youth 1 - 2 Tamil

This game highlighted our defensive frailties and complete inability to finish. It wraps up our campaign with the same feeling that I've had for the majority of it; disappointment. Hopefully the board stick to their side of the bargain and I still have a job come 2020.

5a930bb0c92a9_NYO-LF14Overview.PNG.9935e96ce1777a180f5cbdc0c2594636.PNG5a930bb207e08_NYO-LF14Stats.PNG.5f09968b0d16f0093546ef1096b78f89.PNG

The final league standings:

5a930ddd25daf_NYO-LeagueStandingsNov.thumb.PNG.f5c21db4db9ccebfd94ddd2c5d316c69.PNG

And just to round off a terrible campaign, there are a lot more players who are really unhappy at not making the play-offs.

5a930ddef1407_NYO-SquadMutiny2.thumb.PNG.8b0d278f07b8d7a52f4472d957c0d51a.PNG

Hopefully next season we can find some consistency, and maybe a decent striker?!

Fridson Silbanuz who was a huge prospect has become the fourth player to leave for Gagil, as I pray we can hold on to our best players during the break, otherwise we'll have no chance next season!

March 2020

I spent the off-season thinking about goals. We lacked any sort of penetration last season and with my neck on the line, drastic changes need to be made in order for me to keep my job!

Pre-Season

With what little scouting budget I was assigned, I signed Sebastian Jim who is a high potential striker. I also switched to an attacking 4-3-3 formation with wingers, 3 central strikers, one central midfielder and an emphasis on playing down the flanks. I trialed it in the standard friendlies against our U20's with mixed results.

Nimgil Youth 6 - 4 Nimgil Youth U20's

And it seems scoring is no longer a problem?! With the debutant, Seb Jim, scoring FOUR!

We can score, but we can't defend. Jim pops up again, this time with a brace.

A draw to conclude a very confusing pre-season.

And to top things off, our main centre-back has just gone to join G&B Club, so we say goodbye to Marlon James and hello to panic-buy Ankey Laurdine.

We have an opening fixture against Maap again. The team we've played 6 times and only taken a single point from. This could be a baptism of fire for Laurdine, are we ready?

What a result!

A great way to start the season and absolutely smash the unwanted record with our first win in 7 attempts over Maap.

We couldn't get another win, as a red card and frustrating play mean we can't build on our impressive start.

Jonah James left to our upcoming opponents G&B Club and in a quest to find a midfield replacement, I found a commanding CB in Zedrick Barnabus who will be apt cover for now.

A mad, mad game which we eventually came out on top of, with Gibson Henry on form with another hat-trick.

Nimgil Youth 1 - 0 Gagil

We needed the help of an early red card as all three strikers were off form for once. Ankey Laurdine stepped up to keep our unbeaten & winning run going.

Nimgil Youth 1 - 0 Maap

And we've done the double over Maap - a hard fought battle over our title rivals as we rocked into the second half of the season.

We're unbeaten 8 games in as we hit the mid-season break. But G&B Club are hot on our heels and are definitely the team to beat.

YAP Games

Nimgil Youth 2 - 0 Outer Islands

We started our group fixtures in the same rich vein of form.

Maap 3 - 5 Nimgil Youth

As Maap started creeping back in to the game we put them to bed with a third straight back-to-back win over them. The only disappointing bit was that they were still in the game at all!

Nimgil Youth 7 - 1 Maap

Another win against Maap and this one was a trouncing!!! Seb Jim with four and all three strikers on the score sheet equals one happy manager.

Nimgil Youth 2 - 3 Tamil

We slipped up and lost our impressive run of form against a team we should be comfortably beating.

September 2020

We were matched up with G&B Club in the Semi-Finals, and after they only scraped through on goal difference, I felt we had a chance at denting the aspirations and confidence of our nearest league rival.

YAP Games Semi-Final

Nimgil Youth vs. G&B Club

Spoiler

Nimgil Youth 1 - 0 G&B Club

On to the Final!!!!!! They had no response to an early Henry goal. Jaysty Paul failing to double our advantage lead to a tentative second half but ultimately at this stage of the competition; it's the result that matters!

5aa723508aa24_NYO-CSFOverview.PNG.7d4720e08998167d300ea09ee59e07b3.PNG5aa7235255fe4_NYO-CSFStats.PNG.41a7250b8bd75446976ca7a32aa3a2c6.PNG

But the excitement of reaching the Final was short-lived with memories of the League Final lost in 2018 - which a lot of the squad had to suffer through too. Could we hold our nerve this time?

YAP Games Final

Nimgil Youth vs. Fanif

Spoiler

Nimgil Youth 4 - 2 Fanif

Our first piece of silverware!

Fitting that both of the star forwards and the GK got on the scoresheet in a hard fought victory where it was clinical finishing that made the difference in the end.

This victory was also our 20th game on the score sheet in a row:

October 2020

Our next game is against G&B Club - a win for them and we're level on points, a win for us and we go 6 clear! If we can keep the momentum going from the Cup win and beat G&B Club again, then there's no reason to think we can't finish the league season unbeaten!

Nimgil Youth 6 - 4 G&B Club

3-all at half time after a bonkers, back-and-forth first half and we looked like we'd lost it conceding a 86th minute goal to make it 3-4. But Jaysty Paul managed to convert a penalty and a 90th minute goal turned the game on it's head before Kasim Jack rounded off a brilliant late surge to finish the scoring for the day at 6-4.

Outer Islands 0 - 0 Nimgil Youth

With the pressure off we took our foot off the gas a bit here. We created chances, but our finishing let us down and the lack of consistency of scoring 6 in one game from 15 shots and then failing to score with 16 shots the next game is worrying!

Nimgil Youth 3 - 2 Weloy Strikers

We were a lot more comfortable than the scoreline suggests as we solidified top spot and the top seeding for the league semi-finals!

A 4-minute first-half flurry of goals helped us to maintain an incredible record for the league season.

Pre-Season

With a hunger to go all the way this time round there have been no changes to the team in or out, other than removing some dead wood and low potential youth squad players. We've had a mixed bag of pre-season results, but I put out two evenly matched teams for each game and concentrated on fitness levels.

YFA Island WIde League

Fanif 3 - 6 Nimgil Youth

All three strikers hit the back of the net, we had luck on our side with the OG and even our GK got on the scoresheet with a sumptuous freekick to kick off a great start to the season!

5aa83fd18d52b_NYO-LF1Overview.PNG.28cae2f427e2f5482a772597021bbf22.PNG5aa83fd2de72d_NYO-LF1Stats.PNG.facf42e915f1e12bd9f8cdbfc2773a34.PNG

G&B Club 3 - 5 Nimgil Youth

Another drumming, but we are conceding a lot too. This score-one-more-than-you tactic might come to haunt us if the strikers have an off day.

5aa83fd5a775d_NYO-LF2Overview.PNG.181f52e248237e7acabf3a05b379f250.PNG5aa83fd6ea5ad_NYO-LF2Stats.PNG.43c58e7820c5039844626aee08961e23.PNG

Nimgil Youth 4 - 2 Weloy Strikers

But is there any chance of an off day as all 3 strikers get on the scoresheet for the third game in a row to make it 3 from 3!

5aa83fd7dbe0c_NYO-LF3Overview.PNG.d1397045b70913f7e606815ca715112d.PNG5aa83fd8bc567_NYO-LF3Stats.PNG.0f6ec7ccf1931228ad8c0f5278169580.PNG

Nimgil Youth 5 - 3 Gagil

Even going down to 10-men won't stop us!

5aa83fdad0835_NYO-LF4Stats.PNG.210b55a577d06dfe42d92790e5582b29.PNG5aa83fd9cab08_NYO-LF4Overview.PNG.9731dda51b7f3c4344473f3c98ff3fbd.PNG

I would definitely be a season ticket holder with a combined score of 20 - 11 in the first four games. We have a 100% record and are top of the pile, for now. The amount of goals we are conceding is definitely a concern.

I've got to be honest here, I have no idea what is going on with the different Micronesian competitions so it's hard to follow, but you seem to be doing brilliantly and in any case, I'm just here for the red cards, (all 29 of them!)

It seems as if the referees have an extra dislike for players who's surname is also a forename. :idiot:

Yeah, the player's discipline is pretty terrible!

Thanks for the comment though, I'll start screenshotting the competition standing every month so it's easier to keep tabs :)

Nimgil Youth 5 - 1 Maap

A massive win again and we've turned the tables on Maap of late; that's 5 wins in the last 5 now!

Nimgil Youth 2 - 2 Outer Islands

So, we're not invincible.
O.I. Are our nearest rivals at the moment and we were very lucky to come back twice to draw this game to keep ourselves 3 points ahead.

YAP Games

Can we keep up our impressive league form to retain the YAP Games!?

Nimgil Youth 1 - 1 Tamil

Well, we're not off to the best start. A draw against one of the easier opponents of the group - we'll have to improve.

5aa98da173b68_NYO-CF1Overview.PNG.eeead6ffa4ba0927ff68b838a6fc18a3.PNG5aa98da2cbcdb_NYO-CF1Stats.PNG.512997d0ca2c4b32dc75fd7559bb131b.PNG

Maap 3 - 2 Nimgil Youth

Maap remind us that they are a force to be reckoned with as they inflict our first defeat of the season!

Outer Islands 3 - 3 Nimgil Youth

In the first half, it seemed as if our aim of retaining the YAP Games was over, but an incredible fightback from 3-0 down keeps us from slipping to bottom of the group at the halfway stage!

But can we still qualify from this?!
With a big gap of fixtures for us, the majority of the rest of the group has been played and it doesn't make for very good reading for our chances:

5aa98fc293e7e_NYO-Cuphalfway2.PNG.14540add4bbcfd06ff78a5a388734381.PNG

Tamil 0 - 5 Nimgil Youth

That's one huge statement of intent from the team. A resounding win takes us 3rd.

Nimgil Youth 3 - 0 Outer Islands

I thought that O.I. might put us to the sword, but our closest league rivals will crash out if they don't beat Tamil by 2 goals. And indeed, if they lose to Tamil and Maap beat us, we could still drop off top spot and not qualify for the semis. We have to be on our game.

Nimgil Youth 3 - 1 Maap

A great result which sees us safely through and top of the group unless Tamil win by 13 goals in the final game. We'll face Gagil in the semi-final.
