wobbly007
I remember the days when I used to love playing with a target man (Zigic) and poacher with great success but now I just seem to go to the default of an advanced striker (a) and a deep lying forward (s). I was wondering what success people are currently having in FM18 with different two striker partnerships? Have you managed to get a target man to be successful with a poacher? Or maybe a poacher with a deep lying forward? A false nine with a trequartista? I'm asking in the hope of injecting a bit of life in my 5-3-2 WB formation which is seriously impotent at the moment. Khazard
Any combo of treq/cf/DLF/f9 seems to work great with a poacher/af/CF for me. I would recommend just switching a CB out for an extra striker and moving one of your midfielders to DM keep the WBs where they are.. seem to score a lot more with 3 strikers than 2 and the loss of the defender made no difference at all for me still seem to barely concede. AFCBeer
I’ve always struggled getting strike partnerships right in FM. The front 2 always seem too isolated from the rest of my side. However, I have a preference for possession based systems so the gap between midfield and strikers might not be an issue in issue in a more direct system. In FM17 I had some joy with a 3-5-2(DM) using a DLF(a) and F9. This was a possession system and I found the F9 the best role to drop deep enough and link play. Currently in FM18 I’m on a lower league save playing a more basic 4-4-2. It’s partly down to player attributes but my combination is a DF(d) and Poacher. Again the idea is to prevent gaps between midfield and attack but I find the DF is a good role to chase and harry the AI which is always useful in LLM, but also mimic the effect of a TM without the associated long, high passes. Ellandroadhero
I’ve got an incredible one going on a Leeds save with a DF support and a Target Man attack. Very physical, very direct and a nightmare for defences. In my third season I’m 3rd in the prem coming up to Christmas because of these boys.
FMunderachiever
Ive used defensive forward and target man in direct high tempo football and works like a charm. Also used a tried and trusted deep lying forward and advanced forward combination.
wobbly007
The target man / defensive forward sounds like it could be an interesting combo. Think I'll give this a go once I get a job, after being sacked following relegation with Llandudno, and see how it fares
zZzZzZzZzZzZzZz
I've had success with the old-fashioned big man little man combo, playing a tall and strong target man next to a very quick advanced forward.
dannyfc
I can never get an Attacking variant of a forward ever to work. They just end up isolated from midfield, or encourage endless balls over the top they're usually offside for. A DFs and F9s work best for me. Both work close to the midfield dragging the defence out, allowing one to get into the space between the channels. The striker role makes me miss the custom sliders the most. I want an AF with lower mentality, or a less specialised option that's more attacking than a DF.

Thanks so much! Glad you’re enjoying it. That strike partnership is a massive part of what makes the save so fun I think. I’ve enjoyed other tactics with single strikers, but I really love having two in the box and getting crosses into them.

That was a revelation to me but discovering the merits of playing a striker on support has been probably the biggest thing I’ve kearnt tactically. I used to stupidly honk that your striker just needed to be on attack. Very misinformed.

Sticking with my 5-3-2 WB formation that has been gradually tweeked, the target man has got 5 goals in 7 and the defensive forward has scored 9 goals in
JPKD
Poacher with a False 9 in my current game playing 4-4-2 with an attacking winger to supply the width. So many goals.
