Newporty County - March 19/20

English Vanorama National

3298a2e2a10659a3152559f1dee0da75.png

A brilliant month - despite playing the last three games with only Lewis Walters and an unproven Carel Kayembe up front (who scored his first goal for the club in his 12th game, against Maidstone). Kieran Evans and Victor Maffeo were dominant throughout. Maffeo now has 4 goals and 4 assists in 9 games, with an average rating of 7.74, while Evans is up to 10 goals, 9 assists in 34. Of particular importance was our 4-2 win over 2nd place Tranmere - the game I believe may well have won us the title, as it pushed the gap to 9 points.

12 points clear with 5 to play. I think we have it sewn up...

Newport County - April/May 19/20

English Vanorama National

687b130e1ac34844bdef4fadeab2a43d.png

We started April nicely by, well, winning the league. A late Yan Klukowski goal, and an even later Harrogate equaliser against Tranmere, meant that Newport will definite, certainly, be in the Football League next year. And then... and then... In 46 games, we failed to score three times. Once was a 3-0 humbling away at Maidenhead. This though. 6-0. Against 23rd place. When we had just won the league. I started Marcel Wusiewicz in goal, played a couple of second choices in the centre of midfield and at right back. But 6-0. Six. It was awful.

Of course, we came back with a bang, Kayembe, McCarthy and a just-returned Will Annan all on the scoresheet two games on the trot. Annan had missed 3 months, and finishes the season on 14 goals and 13 assists in 31 appearances - only Aaron Connolly (22 goals, 9 assists, 33 appearances) and Lewis Walters (31 goals, 5 assists, 43 appearances) were involved in more goals. Unsurprisingly, Annan, Connolly and Walters, as well as Kieran Evans, Tom Owen-Evans and Matt Dolan, were on the shortlist for the VNN player of the year:

4ca94aea1a4c64ed413d1db2ecb2bc7d.png

And then, on our final day, again - atrocious. Positives:

FC United of Manchester - End of Season 2019/20

English Vanorama National

The League:

b6ac0f9d7543e1eb4f6b71897ff37a86.png

Champions by 19 points, 119 goals... not bad, all said.

The Squad:

b52abdaa67554c53e1df2428913d48c3.png

5 separate players reached double figures for goals. Only Sam Long and Ryan McGivern are leaving at the end of the year. I'm not sure how the squad will fare in League 2. I need a new backup goalie as Wusciewicz is a bit rubbish.

Awards:

Fan's Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season:

If it weren't for his injury problems meaning he missed 2.5 months, plus internationals, I think Connolly may have had a chance as top scorer in the league. His contract with Brighton expires in the Summer and I will try and get him permanently.

My Player of the Season:

5573b3a0cbf6c319dee28e42b503f19e.png

I'm biased because I've signed him twice, and the boy done good after a poor first season at Newport. But you can't argue with involvement in 27 goals in 32 games, nor with 2 goals in your first two games after a 3 month layoff...

Finances:

d4f10ab2ed093632a8bc790ac7c15465.png

Herein the rub. We're not a sustainable club. Despite my wage bill of £20k p/w being less than the board maximum £23k, we still lose money hand over fist. I don't see us changing anytime soon - maybe a few more season tickets, a few more club members, but I'll be looking elsewhere throughout next season. Maybe abroad, if they'll have me. Somewhere with money.

That was pretty comfortable at the end, you should be more than fine in League 2.

We've still got no money, but we signed some decent frees and sold our rubbish backup keeper to League 1 Millwall for a bit of cash. The big signing is, of course, Stephen Ireland - Premier League experience, a brilliant attacking midfielder, I'm hoping to play him as an advanced playmaker - though I migh push himm forward as an enganche in games we're expected to win. Blanchard, Hancox, Shorten and Saunders are for the future, while we managed to sign Harvey Rodger, who spent the last two seasons on loan, and renew Connolly's loan up front. Aarons will be backup right back, Omonde-Otterwill will be one of two left backs with Coulson.

Newporty County - August 20/21

English League Two

6524521848f825c9f3c3d26db70c6bb3.png

I mean we're scoring... But its nothing special, and we look like the mid-table team I think we are. A second string lost to QPR in the League cup, and our comeback against Chesterfield was good. But I think we're where we should be.

Newporty County - September 20/21

English League Two

016c47e247e3a5f5a866598a44aecb03.png

We remain performing like th emid-table team I think we deservedly are. Up and down, up and down. A second string played in the Checkatrade, because **** the Checkatrade. After the Wycombe loss, Andrew McCarthy got 4 assists and a goal in 4 matches, which is not half bad for an 18 year old. He'll go back to left wing once Connolly is fit again, but he looks a serious prospect. Top of the Championship Villa are after him.

Also signed a player. We've got a fair few injuries, and he looks sexy:

Newporty County - October 20/21

English League Two

18b741dfaeb1a331bb2252e7b986aff4.png

We made a brilliant start to the month with Kayembe and new signing Stylianides both scoring twice against Bristol Rovers, while Connolly returned to the team from the bench after 7 games out.But we lost three players to international duty - Stylianides gaining his first caps for Cyprus, McCarthy his first u-21 cap for Wales and Foulston - and our squad is very small. And while I managed to get a 2-2 draw (and, oddly, a loss on penalties - the Checkatrade is ****ing weird) I then proceeded to lose two on the trot and only just get a draw in the next three days. At least I manage a win against bottom of the table Blackpool, and Lewis Walters - star striker for two seasons - finally back on the scoresheet.

The table is ridiculously tight. 6 points seperate 4th from 14th.

Newporty County - November 20/21

English League Two

7a9e50bdaa10c18989882b6ab4966963.png

With the race for the playoffs so close I've decided that the cups can sod off. Bad for my terrible bank balance (currently a million pounds in the red, and losing £50k a month despite being £5k under the wgae budget), but good for the league. With that in mind, a mostly second team held on for a draw, down to ten men after the first professional foul I've seen in my career to date by Curtis Watkins, away at Vanarama North Wrexham. At least we won in the replay. We were given the option to postpone our Checkatrade game against Northampton - but chose not to - in favour of postponing the league game against Forest Green, and proceeded to beat our League 1 opposition away. Odd game, football.

Of course that 'focus' on the league resulted in two losses, albeit against teams in the top five - in both of which we played poorly. A win - from behind - against Yeovil was good, though yet another injury to Aaron Connolly - his 5th in two years, for over 6 months - was a negative.

Ch-ch-ch-changes

My name was being linked around, and Wigan, 21st in League One, came a-calling right at the end of November. Beaten playoff finalists last season and the season before, they're a big club that wants to get bigger again. Not only that, but they actually have money - £2m of it - though worryingly they did lose £2.7m last season. Still in the Checkatrade (snore), they're out of the League Cup (2-1 to Lincoln in the 1st round) and the FA cup (3-0 to AFC Wimbledon).

My wages have jumped from £800 p/w to £3,700 p/w which is nice.

30f40be3adcc4c41865298c6957c7c82.png

Squad shouldn't be this far down the league by any stretch. For some reason Sammy Ameobi was up for sale, and it's nice to be reunited with Victor Maffeo, our right winger from our National-winning season (though he may well go on loan, as he's the 4th best right winger in the squad).
