FC United of Manchester - October 18/19

Well, my matches dontinue to entertain certainly. St Ives do a stand up job of frustrating a second string at home, and we certainly don't blow them away in the replay with a far stronger line up - a matchup that means that when I play Buxton I make only 4 changes to my first choice 11, starting with my second choice GK Owen Wheeler and 4th choice ST, Tyrell McKenzie. Wheeler has a shocker and we go 3-0 down at half time. A rocket of a team talk, overload for 30 mins, and three first teamers on from the bench and we scrape a win in the 89th minute, continuing our late comeback/late winner habit. We play League One Blackpool at home in round one.

In the league, late goals come again with a vengeance - a 91st mintue equaliser at home to York, a 91st minute winner from the spot against Gainsborough, and a 92nd minute icing on the cake in the most exciting match I've ever had against Darlington. Darlington led twice, 2-0 and 3-2, but two each from Gilchrist and Annan (one of which was a fluke cross), a goal from the spot by Lundstram and an own goal meant I led 6-4 before younf Matty Longstaff did what I always do and scored late, late on. A magnificent, exciting, game of football. In 15 league games and 4 in the cup, we've now scored 15 goals in the last 10 minutes, or in stoppage time. Our fitness, our ability to stay in matches, and, above all, our goalscoring ability, is why we top the league.

07fe98662760a2364929637e5e8e4436.png

And we top it with an average of 3.26 goals per game scored, and nearly 2 a game conceded. Excitement.

What this doesn't show is Annan's four assists in that time period as well...

An interview offer? Hooray! From 20th in the same league that I currently top? Not a chance in hell. Also, weird that its the Play/GK coach who's invited me in...

Oh... right... That's odd. Anyway, rejected. This on the other hand:

21st in the National League, predicted 16th. Not much more budget than I currently have, and I'm not sure if I'd take it if it was offered. But worth a look, I feel.

EDIT: And another one...

Two weeks later, one of the jobs that got me fired - the only one I actually applied for - arrived. A short trip down to Newport in Wales, and a professional squad that is currently languishing in 13th place in the Vanarama National having gone down last season.

e70eecbb9a29750b7ed73ca8b1d3298e.png

We're heavy on strikers, and ****ed if our goalkeeper gets injured. Oh, and there's a distinct lack of central players. But the quality is there, and I can hopefully fit them into my preferred 4-4-2 with an advanced winger.

Not a bad start to my Newport career! The old 4-4-2 (AMR) working its exciting way again, with goals galore. 19 goals in 6 league games, for an average of more than 3 a game. We look very good. How this team was 13th is anyone's guess. Klukowski, Nash, Walters all look brilliant and we're through in the FA Trophy.

A couple of signings, too. First was from my old club, Will Annan whom I signed in the Summer for FC United came for a £12k fee to be my first choice AMR.

Goalkeeper and captain Joe Day wants to leave - and as a highly influential player, I agreed that he could go. In came Joe McDonell as a new first choice, and young Pole Marcel Wusiewicz as backup, both on a free.. I'll look to sell Day in January:

Not quite the success of last month, but much better defensively... Not sure quite why I'm so much better away from home either. A second string team played and lost in the cup as I'm focussing on the league.

Very good youngster who could be starting for years - for £3k from Boston

And an MC on loan to give us some quality ine the last six months.

Another up and down month, but with one of the more incredible FM matches I've had. Again, this is a team not short of a goal or two - and not afraid to concede, either. A 4-4 home draw with Wrexham was just that. 20 shots to us, 10 to them, 3 penalties given to us, 2 of which were missed, and two ultra-late goals to pull a draw from the jaws of defeat. Outside of that, two more high scoring wins - one with extremely late goals again - and a high-scoring loss. We don't do boring.

dcabd6e2fe33e88f7863ee24d16a3278.png

A quick look at my managerial stats suggest that this exciting tactic I've stumbled upon (how do I learn to defend??) has resulted in 2.45 goals per game. For reference, no team in any division is above 2.1 at the moment.

Goals, goals and more goals. 21 of them in 6 matches for, 13 against. An average score of 3-2. This is actively insane. I deserved the losses to Orient and Solihulll, despite best efforts A halftime debut for Andrew McCarthy, Newport youth product (real, sadly), against Orient nearly turned the tide with two goals, and he added a third of his career, also from the bench, in a demolition of Dagenham & Redbridge. Klukowski's 4 goals, including three from the spot helped for the month, while 19 y/o AML Kieran Evans has made it 17 assists in 39 for the season. Goals.

43166bd9466b64df11e80efdfd155c09.png

We sit fifth, averaging more than 2 goals a game. 5 to play - we might make it to the playoffs unless everything goes tits up.

OK-ish, but our away record is third in the league while our home record is a lousy 12th

I screwed up against Accrington, rarely not scoring (in fact it was the first game in 6 without a goal for me, and one of only 3 in 27 to date without), before bouncing back with 3 wins on the trot - and impressive ones too - to secure a playoff spot. Lewis Walters has 25 goals in 25 games under me. We look solid, and I'm slowly, slowly, fixing the defence with a few tweaks.

I reckon he'll lose in the playoffs again.

I'm not sure I'll get there without good use of the loan market. Matt Dolan, on paper my best player, won't sign a new contract. WIthout Nash or Gudjohnson, I'm down to Walters (brilliant) and McCarthy (17, but good) upfront. My first choice centre back pairing are both 18. And on top of that I'm massively over budget and under-financed. Let's see what happens.

Last season's frankly ridiculous scoring has become, frankly, ridiculouser. At least 3 goals in every game - including our loss away at Dagenham (a 91st minut equaliser and 93rd minute penalty, after being 2-0 up inside 10 minutes). And, to cap it all, our defence has, in some games, not been entirely awful \o/. Lewis Walters continues to average exactly a goal a game for me, and particularly noteworthy is the performance of Will Annan. He spent most of last season as second fiddle to Tom Owen-Evans, but four goals in his first five games, alongside three assists is a marvellous return.

Teams seem to be cottoning on to me. I'm unbeaten at home - indeed, I've only dropped two points there - but away we're not breaking teams down. Our 2-1 at Welling was in the 92nd minute, and three losses on the spin - including our first game without scoring this season - were all away in games where we just couldn't break down the opposition and never looked like winning. Out of the FA Cup, which might be a positive.

018acb6d2442f52db37b2080c8ccd8e3.png

Somehow we're still top. Accrington Stanley and York took 4 points from 15, Chester just 7 and Eastleigh matched our 9.

That's more like it! A thrashing of Sutton, a makeshift side scraping past Maidstone (4 injuries, 3 internationals leaving me with one recognised striker), a late penalty equaliser for Maidenhead and then two more big wins - including away at 3rd place Chester most importantly. Big goals are back!

Decent month - no losses in the league, and a few thrashings in there. The three 2-2 draws were deserved, though it took a 94th minute equaliser for Torquay. In the cup, our second team got knocked out by Maidenhead. We're getting a few injuries thoiugh - Connolly is out for 5 weeks, Kieran Evans has been injured since the 7th, and will be out to the end of January, Eyoma is out for a couple of weeks.

Some transfer news - our financial situation meant I felt obliged to sell Tozer to balance the books a little. He was on £1,600 a week, and was very much 2nd choice (though a good backup). £70k was reasonable. We replaced him with Curtis Watkins, very much a backup and only for the year on £300 a week. Nicholas Wood is one for the future.

It's good to have Lewis Walters back in form. Four goals before a injury puts him on 27 in 31 for the season, after 24 in 24 for me last season. Very nearly a goal a game, and I think he might be my most consistent striker in any FM (though not yet my favourite. Ibrahim Atangana of 2011's Amiens save has that particular accolade. What an FM that was...). The month as a whole was good - my first loss in 17 games notwithstanding. In the end it mattered not a jot, as Tranmere also lost that week (4-1 to Maidenhead). Injuries are starting to bite however - we are regularly rotating now, and we've lost Walters, Kieran Evans, Will Annan, Aaron Connolly and Matt Dolan - our top five players - for varying numbers of games in the last two months.
