Obviously a very busy window but it needed to be with losing a few players plus the improvement in quality needed, getting the 3 loans in was certainly a big plus as the window would probably not have been good enough if we relied on just the frees. I was happy to bring Hanna back to the club after he initially left as his versatility will be important if we pick up injuries and suspensions, there's probably only Porter who won't see much game time but we were desperately short on backup for Hinds and he was probably the best player available willing to be back up, to be fair he does have league 1 potential too so it wasn't a complete panic after Hinds got injured late August but it was probably a position I wasn't looking at changing too much.

Not a bad start so far, avoiding relegation is all I have to do so if we keep this up then i'll be more than delighted in all honesty, it is a long season though so it's too early to take too much out of the start.

This is a bit of a strange one to me really, in reality I should be happy that at the half way stage we are 9 points clear of the relegation zone but we just seem to have problems holding on to leads, maybe it is because there's players that aren't quite good enough and deep down I know that too and am probably over relying on those 3/4 that are top end players for this level but it is so frustrating especially against sides that are really struggling at the time we are playing them, i'd probably accept it when happening against the bigger sides in the league.

We are losing about £80k a month atm so that's a problem I have with trying to improve the squad, being in the FA Cup (with a 3rd round trip at 2nd bottom Wycombe next up) still will hopefully bring a bit of relief that but it is worrying the way we seem to be losing cash so quickly and though the wages are below budget it's making me reluctant to add too many faces even if they were available.

I was debating on whether to write this report now or wait and see what happens with 2 potential jobs but the chances are I won't get either so i've decided to write it now while all the information is to hand rather than having to mess about either writing a longer one later or this one with with the slim chance of me leaving.

What a change the New Year has been, the 2 league defeats were against decent sides, i'd have liked us to have done better against Bolton but at that time they were probably the best side in the division so I'm not going to be too angry about it. Another good run to the 5th round was highlighted later and yes I would have prefered the game to be a lower scoreline but with a Prem team like Arsenal away it could have also been a lot worse :D It hasn't affected the league form too much up to now so i've got to be happy. One complaint is the goals against column but it's been a problem i've had all save and I do need to do some work but as the tactic is getting results i'm going to leave it for now and do something rare for me and take control of games over pre season and tweak things then against as close to the standard we are as I can manage.

Assuming I stay i'm hoping we keep this form up as a playoff spot or even close will be an excellent season for us I feel considering the 1st half of the season was inconsistent at best.

As I said earlier I was looking at a certain club and i'm pleased to say I have it

ipswich.thumb.JPG.91a46997eda440c06e41d1d7e2a950d6.JPG

At this stage I have to be realistic on what any move should be and in my eyes at this moment there's only Forest or the Sheffield clubs that can be considered as big for the next step up in England which is where I want to stay for 2/3 more seasons at least unless something goes wrong on the continent that is too hard to turn down as my next move is certainly either a big side relegated or a big side without a title or domestic cup for 5 years but with any luck I should be able able to start getting those after Ipswich (don't worry @deltablue i'll try and make them half way decent before I leave ;) )

There is one little thing though, Nuneaton are on a good little run now and have 5 points margin over 8th for the playoff and only 3 points off automatic promotion   whereas Ipswich are 9 off the playoffs with 9 left (which may have swayed my loyalty if closer :D ) so i've decided to delay the move until the end of the season as I feel I owe the club a little as they took the chance on me and also amongst the frustrations i've also enjoyed a lot of games too so having a go at getting them promotion is the least I could do

In my end of February post I was thinking playoffs is the best we could get but it seems York away followed by another 5 the next game against Wigan was the catalyst to us getting our arses in gear and we finished in 3rd a lot more comfortably than maybe the table and last few results suggest as we were 8 points or so ahead of Bolton for a number of weeks and only a few injuries and suspensions slowed us down over the last 6 games.

I leave the club 3 divisions higher than they were 3 seasons ago and also £1.2M richer than they were 3 years ago so from a personal point of view I think i've done pretty well with them and hope they get a manager capable of continuing my good work, in fact in any other save i'd probably have carried on until they made the Prem at least but Nuneaton was only ever a stepping stone for the real start of this save and Ipswich being in league 1 5 years after this (I didn't even realise to tell deltablue :D ) plus their previous history of the UEFA cup, a former Premier league club they are certainly big enough to count as a club to make the step up.

ipswich.thumb.JPG.b62f553621b801c8478f2bc1260c433d.JPG

There seems a good spine at the club but then is weak at FB and the wings, cover is also needed I feel for almost everywhere but that depends on finances as the idea isn't to spend all of the £7M this year :D

The board want me to use players from our academy which i'd be happy with if there was actually anyone decent in it :D so i've asked for junior coaching to be increased and they've agreed to that

The aim for this season has to be promotion, at a club like Ipswich I can't and won't accept anything else and if it means sacrificing cups for less games then I will do it.

Very happy with the signings we've made and also keeping hold of players over the summer was vital too Neil Brock from QPR looks an excellent bit of business by us but I was a little disappointed we couldn't snatch a young midfielder from Man Utd that would have been certainly the best player in our squad if not the division, unfortunately Wolves came in once we bid and were able to offer a little extra than we agreed on so I do feel we are probably one CM short and although not a massive problem this year I do want to upgrade on aging keeper Bartosz Bialkowski who is already showing a little sign of decline and there is a few candidates for that but i'd prefer to pay a little less than the asking prices :D

table.thumb.JPG.cffdeb400839d9771d2da43b925655c8.JPG

On the pitch and apart from losing a 3-0 lead to Crewe things couldn't have gone any better for us, Brock is already repaying the transfer fee with a healthy return of goals and we seem more consistent than any of my previous clubs ever have (I hope this doesn't come back to haunt me :D ) 8 of our next 10 games are against sides in the top half of the division as I type so we should have a better idea of how good we are by the end of October report.

Strange to see my former club get off to such a good start too as they have only brought in players on frees but as long as they don't cause us problems i'll happily let them finish 2nd behind us :D

Not happy at all with the October showing  :D we should easily be 45 points plus and yes we've missed Ameobi on the left with injury for 6 weeks and we lost 4 players for a 2 games because of internationals (I should have postponed the game really but I thought we would be ok) but the cover should have been good enough. We're lucky we had such a good start to the season as that month was pathetic and if I can get players in during the January window then i'm going to bite the bullet and pay out as I am not accepting that month at all :D

Typically we get a tricky game against my former club in the 1st round of the cup  I am just hoping they don't have the same cup form they had during my spell but their Johnson's trophy run suggests they still have it in them :D

That's more like it!! 2 little blots for the period but considering Fleetwood are on a run themselves and we were 3-0 down to Pompey i'm not too gutted about those results, there's not too much to add really as i've just played and not even looked at scouting too much as the names (like Kompany and Aguero ) are too big for us to afford in wages and the fact I have a rule i'll only ever buy kids or regens from City or Liverpool makes players like that useless to me anyway (I am that petty) :D With this lead in the league now I think it'll be March time before I consider looking at players as I just want to save the money for the jump in division next year as the squad seems strong enough for now, a CM is probably the only position I may look at sooner but they need to be championship level really otherwise it's a waste of money

Wasn't quite the standard of the previous 2 months but we're through to the 6th round of the cup (though that is away to Man City) and have a decent lead in the table which will hopefully be enough to see over the line now. There was nearly a big piece of transfer news as we had the chance to sign Granit Xhaka but unfortunately his wage demands were about £8k out of our reach :( he'd have cost my entire budget for the season but a player like that doesn't become available for league 1 sides too often so he'd have been worth it but alas it wasn't to be :D

Looks like you won't be a league side much longer, though!

Did notice I missed the 1 bit out of the comment :p we'd probably be out of the division with Xhaka in already because CM is the only place where we are really light if a player or 2 is injured, we do enough everywhere else :D If the chance comes again in the summer i'll be on it to bring him in as at 29 I could easily get 3 years out of him before an upgrade would be needed, though if the board allow to scout outside UK and Ireland there's always a chance better will turn up but after being refused in October the option isn't there yet

Going to write a report at the end of the season rather than the bi monthly one because tbh i'm not happy with our form even though we are up with 5 games left :D so basically if we don't play well it's going to be a rant when in reality I know I should be happy about getting where we need to in such quick time  :D

We dropped exactly half of the points available in the final 12 games which just isn't good enough IMO, we should have won this division by at least 20 points with the way the other promotion hopefuls kept slipping up but at least we are up now and I can look forward to getting new faces in. I have a £9M kitty and with this agreed I changed all the scouting assignments immediately

scout.thumb.JPG.dbed6fc84eb6b63c84d8af57262db395.JPG

Also with the board wanting to concentrate on developing our kids too I am happy we got this agreed too as there wasn't even a potential League 1 player amongst the youth intake

Scouting and more scouting is the key and see what we come up with before I start making any aims for next season, survival is possible with this current squad but I think it'll be tight. Aaron Lennon retires at the end of the season and we are already pretty light on the right wing so that will be my first priority.

Wow, great move to Ipswich and great first season with them, too. Getting your career on pretty quick fast-track mode now.

Thanks, I was convinced I wouldn't get the job but thought try anyway as they fitted a bigger club in need of help, it's going to take a big leap in size of club now for me to leave so that means a few years with Ipswich being the mostly likely way for that to happen

Not messing about with the demands!

Not exactly the position I had planned for us :D In my head I was looking at top half at a push as a lot of work needs to be done to the squad :D Promotion/play offs was never in my head because I keep seeing Everton and Leeds yo-yo up and straight back down whereas i'd rather have 2 seasons in the Championship so there's a few windows and room for players to improve to a level able to cope in the Prem :D With these demands I'm probably looking at having to get loans in which apart from maybe 1 player I wasn't looking at doing really :( I'll be spending a fair bit of time over the weekend on this so hopefully something works out :D

I'm reasonably happy with the pre season signings even though we also missed out on a few that were slightly better but I think apart from Friend who will probably only ever end up being cover they are all good enough for the first team at this moment. Ricci is an upgrade on the departing Lennon, Pidoulas looks very decent for this level and Easter from Southampton is a definite upgrade in our midfield too. Bruno Manuel was never a planned signing but when Slavia Praha offered us him for that price it was hard to turn down as he will be very good back up for the side. Scott Anderson is someone i've been after for almost a year and though he cost more than I would have liked I always seem to have problems finding keepers on FM unless I snap them up young so I tend to go by a different rule for keepers where if they are better than what I have pay up :D

I still think the playoffs are asking too much as I think we are weak all across the back 4 but there seems to be enough across the rest of the pitch to give us a decent chance of getting the goals.

Apart from the 3 games without a win in early October (should have had 9 points instead of 2 from them in reality) I have to be happy with the way things are going so far, especially as the squad is a lot thinner than I realised. We've had spells where we've had injuries and suspensions and still do well so I can't even really be critical of anything else this season so far. The football is good and if I could moan about one thing it'd be Brock should have been on 20+ for the season already :D

After the blips each of my teams seem to have around this stage i'm not going to get too carried away at this stage :D if we can get through to Christmas in around the same position then maybe I will start to believe a lot more.

This is the slump I expected October time :D It isn't disastrous but should be better off than we are, I have a feeling this common theme is it tends to be games against lesser sides we struggle (i'll kind of give credit for the 5-5 with Cardiff as we kept coming at them every time they scored) but losing to bottom side Rochdale the week before after taking the league is where I felt things started to turn for the worse (like it does every late autumn/winter for me in this save :D ) We are at home to 3rd placed Leeds next in what will be a real test for us as they are in good form now. If you are wondering where Everton are, they are 2 points adrift of safety but I don't see them not staying up.

There's nobody really struggling apart from AC Milan in the top divisions so it does like I will be at Ipswich a while longer, I doubt I would get that job yet but if the Everton one came up then it's certainly a realistic one for the theme of this save but even then I think i'd rather stick with Ipswich as I do feel there's potential here with the squad i'm building

This is one deal that I am pretty excited about, yes he's the wrong side of 30 but it's the kind of deal you don't get to make often at Championship level, he's probably still good enough for a lower Premier team too, the fans are certainly excited by it anyway and reports of his arrival causing a boost in shirt sales will be handy

What a difference a couple of months make, we've gone from 7 points behind to 6 ahead in record time and even then the 3 draws in that period should have been victories but the football is a lot better than the previous 2 months so i'll not be too harsh on them this time :D Herrera hasn't set the world alight yet but as a new signing and needing fitness i'm willing to give him time as i'm confident he'll improve with each game.

Finally a decent youth player (first of the entire save) and he's a Brazilian with English eligibility and has my real life surname :D Obviously I play as Dexter Morgan so can't claim him to be my son :D

I don't know if this is amongst my top 5 achievements on FM but it's certainly top 2 in terms of promotion, I didn't give us a chance of top 6 at the start, sometimes I say that and not 100% mean it but with such a thin squad I genuinely meant it this time :D  Usually i'd be annoyed about the 18th March onwards but the truth is I had 3 games in a row where I paired DM's at CB and had to play Easter at RB, there was only 1 fit CB at a time for the games after that and Easter played every game at RB and we were unlucky in every game we dropped points in that period, for that alone it was deserved I think.

I'm glad we done it but know there's a long summer ahead, I made 2 signings for the summer before I even got Herrera in (1 is certainly a real gem) but i've chose to leave showing those until the transfer update later as I certainly need CB's at a minimum and back up to Brock, i'll want at least 1 full back too but after that I don't think i'll need to go too crazy as when everyone is fit I know the best XI.

I had a few good offers in the last few weeks of the season

Fair enough i'm not really sure you can say Aberdeen are bigger than Ipswich but the Fergie years makes them eligible in a way, Villa as former European cup winners certainly meet the requirement to swap job but in the position we are the only 2 jobs i'm willing to leave Ipswich for in England at this stage is United (obviously) and Spurs, possibly Chelsea if they got relegated as they don't concern me too much :D  even then I need to check but United have definitely won a European competition within the last 5 years so they are discounted for now but even then turning Ipswich from 14th in League 1 to Championship winners in 2 seasons has been great for me so I see myself doing a few more years here yet, the only logical places for the terms of this save as it stands are in Italy and Greece where the bigger sides aren't always being amongst the trophies so it leaves me short of options unless a shock relegation comes up.

I finally took a course after 2 years almost of trying too :D

I'll be pretty honest in this window wasn't as good as I wanted, in fact getting Frioua and Lecomte back in January were the best deals by far :D the rest are pretty much slight improvements/squad players if i'm honest but when decent players currently on £20/30/40k are wanting £80k upwards there isn't a lot more I can do but tbh even though the board want midtable I just want safety and work from there next year, i'm expecting a few hammerings this year but hopefully we have enough to pick up wins at home and maybe a few decent points away. I think it's possible as the defence now at least has cover. I'm working on a back up striker bt nothing is happening yet so letting Ameobi go may prove to be a mistake but there's a few AMC's I guess could go as a false 9 or something if that doesn't get sorted.

I'm looking forward to this season even though I expect a rough time, but i've got in to the Premiership from the very bottom and gaining promotion each season with a lot of mixed emotions along the way so very happy to finally have got there and see how the club goes.

It's only 9 games in so i'm nowhere near worried yet, in fact there has been signs there's points to be picked up but I wish we'd hurry up and do it :D some sort of 3-5-1-1 is in my head at the minute or 3-4-2-1 but i'm reluctant to make a drastic change just yet when 8 out the next 10 are winnable so i'll probably be in a better situation to judge us a lot better at the end of December in all honesty. We aren't miles adrift so that certainly helps me think stick too.

Finally!!! A November/December where i'm not not annoyed with my players :D 17 points from those 2 months has been a great return and gives us a fighting chance especially with it looking like Leeds are already gone so only 2 spots to avoid now. I didn't change anything with the tactic as I suggested I may but stuck to pretty much a starting XI that I thought is our best and stuck to it as much as possible instead of the rotation I was using in earlier weeks and that did seem to collide with our improvement in form. We've still got a long way to go and no funds to invest (board flat out refused to give me money even with £34M in the bank :rolleyes:) so we'll have to stick with what we have and hope it's enough but at least I feel there's a good chance of safety now

It looks like you will have a stressful season in Premier league but as i see you were unlucky in last 3 games, good luck..

Thanks, it was the kind of season I was expecting in all honesty, I knew there was some quality in midfield especially but the back 4 isn't anywhere near up to scratch which obviously puts me at a disadvantage straight away, as long as we get to April with a chance of staying up i'll be happy.

Four massive wins including a shock at Chelsea means we are almost safe and playing 5 sides below us in the final 10 games  you'd think if the last four months are anything to go by we are capable of 2 wins at least from that lot which I believe will be enough. I sacrificed the FA Cup by rotating everyone which is something I usually wouldn't do but I felt that the league had to be the priority this year and we tend to have an habit of picking up injuries and suspensions.

I've decided as soon as I can get a replacement I am done with Bonilla, god knows what his problem is but he's serving his 9th suspension since I joined the club but never previously picked up over 4 yellows in a season before :D  Whatever the reason (and it isn't my tactic being aggressive) I am done with it as he cost us a point at Liverpool amongst others over the years with his stupidity

2024 has seen us more in title contention form than relegation candidates and if it wasn't for that horrible spell in September and October god knows what position we could have been  There's still a lot of work to be done with the squad, we are badly short on back up for Brock, the full back situation needs to be addressed still (hopefully I can get a permanent deal done for Mathieu Le Guen) CB is still short and even Anderson in goal could probably be upgraded. I'm letting Herrera go, if i'm honest his time didn't work out like I hoped but he served a purpose in terms of filling in when light so for £20K a week it wasn't a bad deal really.

Last season I had to work on a tight budget but no worries like that this summer and I intend spending the lot which is rare for me but stuff it :D There's 4/5 youngsters I wouldn't mind bringing in but the majority will go on the first team.

Even Zaragoza going to the 3rd tier in Spain is a bit of a big one.
