Ackter
Has been a while since I've done this, but have a player who has just past his 1,000th appearance so figured I'd restart this thread to see if anyone is interested again. The challenge is simple: Get as many players to 1,000 club appearances as possible. As always, this is a supporting challenge that can be played alongside your main challenges. For inclusion, post in this thread with a picture of the player at any age, then state his age and the number of appearances he's made when he's eligible for the Hall of Fame (see below for eligibility rules). Proof is obviously preferable, but I also realise it's not really possible for older versions of the game if you've moved on to a newer one. Hall of Fame Rules: The player must play 1,000 club appearances Every appearance must be with you as their manager You or the player must have retired or left the team Any version of the game counts Any league counts, though take into consideration that certain leagues make it easier and certain leagues make it practically impossible To clarify rule 3: after a player reaches 1,000 appearances and you retire, he retires or you decide to sell him, he is eligible for inclusion in the Hall of Fame (ie. as soon as he can stop gaining appearances with you as manager, he is eligible). Please use this thread to post progress updates, talk about the challenge and anything else you want regarding the challenge or contents of this thread. Cheers

Ackter
Ok, I intended to go through all previous Longevity challenge threads and add to the Hall of Fame, but most of the photos are broken. If you want a player from an older thread included, please link me to a photo of the player, their age when they became eligible (if you have it) and their total appearances. Here are the links to the previous threads, for those interested:
Ackter
Evidence so far: With Craig Smith and William Ackter I can't find their retirement age anywhere, but I have managed to find a picture of my Best X1 when they were included: Bearing in mind that the Best X1 only counted seasons where the player made the team of the season, they likely had more apps than this. Evidence for my other players and Leonovich's can be found in this thread: This lad has also just made his 1,000th appearance for the club, so I'll be adding him to the Hall of Fame once he retires @dafuge - you have some historic players that are eligible iirc. Ackter
Prescott finishes the season on 1,007 appearances. That means he's actually made it into the Newcastle best X1 every single season he was in the Premier Division: Which is damn impressive imo. Still, he's unlikely to get many more appearances from now on as, at the age of 34, he's declining quickly. He still has a rotational/backup role to play, though. Mr U Rosler
Ackter, Player history only shows league appearances. Anywhere show total appearances including cup games etc. On FM17. Thanks
Joe.
I remember this. I've actually started as Newcastle on my latest FM17 save so to do something similar would be great.. Not sure I'll last long enough though, but I'll post on here if I get any players to qualify!

Mr U Rosler
No problem. I've a few big hitters in my academy save, don't think any have hit 1,000 + yet. Many thanks
Ackter
"Greatest player of his generation" goes straight into the first team Slightly worrying that 3 of my 11 players are youths, but I hope I can still do well enough to not get fired... Ackter
Tim Prescott has retired after 1,014 appearances for Newcastle (plus 17 for FC Nantes and 107 for England), earning his place second from bottom in the current Longevity Hall of Fame. Looks like I could have got him over 1,100 if I'd stuck with him, but his performances were dropping badly so I didn't take the risk. However, it's a good start elsewhere as all three of my first team youthers rack up a good return. Tom Hughes comes in with 61 appearances in his debut season. Darren Margetson manages an impressive 58 debut-season appearances and is now being retrained as a Sweeper because... Sean Lowe, promoted from the Youth Academy in March, takes over in midfield, getting 16 appearances. I'd like to say my first team form hasn't been affected, but it really has. Worried I may have to drop one of them in order to maintain results next season.

There are two screens that show the combined stats (but they both also roll the sub appearances into starts aswell): The Seasonal Best XI screen - but only shows the 18 players who made the team. The Club History -> Players Screen which is new for FM17 - whilst this screen allows you to go back through the years it only seems to show players who are still at your club (or are on loan with you for some reason) which somewhat reduces the usefulness of it. Of course none of the screens show the full stats as the playoff appearances don't seem to be recorded in FM17 (when I'm sure they were in previous versions), so if you have ever been in the playoffs your players might have a couple more apps that are recorded. Ackter
A good season for Margetson, Hughes and Lowe: 2037/2038 Totals Margetson (18): 108 apps Hughes (18): 106 apps Lowe (17): 68 apps
Ackter
2038/2039 Season Bad season for the club, with only an FA Cup to our name, but a good season for the three youngsters. Ackter
Margetson and Lowe are both injury prone so they're not quite maximising their potential apps. Margetson has, luckily, only had minor and well-timed injuries. Lowe hasn't been as lucky. This has allowed Hughes to take the lead on apps so far. 2039/2040 Hughes (20): 225 apps Margetson (20): 223 apps Lowe (19): 161 apps

Joe.
Aha I'll join in before too long.. JWVG
@Ackter Do you play each game or go on holiday or something else?
Ackter
I used to go on holiday for each game, but in Fm17 the match engine is good enough that I can watch it without punching things. So the new players I'm adding here have had each match played, but the ones from previous threads will most likely have been holidayed matches. Joe.
I have a couple of players that could make it, though I'm not sure they will as I'm not in a strong enough position to keep them in my squad for every game! I'm up to 01/01/2019. Emanuel Torrent (19 years old) I bought this kid as an 18 year old, and he's made 31 appearances to date. As a goalkeeper, it's fairly easy to keep him in the team - so keeping him around for such a long time is going to be the issue as I'm not sure I'll get the success he's after... I do have a 3 year option in his contract though, so we'll see! Darren King (17 years old) A youth team product, he's been introduced to the squad this season mostly in the cups, and played on the final day of last season. 13 appearances thus far. EDIT - It's worth mentioning that I've been hit with a particularly hard Brexit. All EU nationals will need work permits, and those in my squad will need work permits when their contracts expire. Darren King will obviously be fine, but I don't know about Emanuel Torrent. It is in my favour, however, that I've tied him down to a long contract - just need to hope he makes the Work Permit requirements when the time comes. Ackter
I believe he'll get a work permit based on the strength of his moustache alone.

Ackter
If anyone's interested, here's some players that I really regret not going for with this challenge. I can't help but think how good they could have been if I'd given them the game time I've given others: They all look like they could have been good enough to hit the 1,000 apps. There's also a load more at other teams around the world. There's also a bunch I played but then gave up on when it turned out they weren't really good enough.
Ackter
Not convinced that Hughes is actually good enough to keep his place. He's not progressed half as well as the other two have.
Ackter
Nearly at the end of another season and Hughes has not improved at all. Looks like this is the end of his 1,000 app challenge. Will still make a good squad player though. Margetson also looks like he's peaked, but he already looks perfect for his role. Lowe is getting better every day and Dowling is improving nicely.
Joe.
In mine, Torrent is trying to force a move away and King isn't getting regular game time.. That, coupled with the fact I've just been knocked out of a cup and don't have European competition at the minute, mean that I think 1000 apps will be a struggle for both of my players! I'll revisit this in a couple of seasons time when hopefully some other candidates will come through.
Ackter
2043/44 Margetson (24): 465 apps Lowe (23): 392 apps Dowling (18): 138 apps, 44 goals Hughes has been dropped to a rotation option now, while Dowling managed to play in every single game of the season (helped by lots of subbing to try and keep my other striker happy). Ackter
2044/45 Margetson (25): 526 apps Hughes (25) 501 apps Lowe (24): 447 apps Dowling (19): 198 apps, 85 goals Despite dropping out of the Key Player role, Hughes is still getting a load of appearances as sub so I've added him back in for now. Both him and Margetson have passed the 500 apps mark this season, so they're half way there.

Joe.
I have one player who will come close, I'm not on my laptop at the minute though so I can't post anything right now.. He's currently 18 and must be approaching his 100th appearance. My only gripe is that he was one of the older members of my youth team, so he was only a few months away from his 17th birthday when he came in. I was unable to keep hold of Torrent, despite his wonderful moustache - he opted to go to Real Madrid (as if that's a better option than Burnley!) King is still in my first team, but he's rotated fairly regularly so although I imagine he'll get a decent amount of appearances under his belt, 1000 will be a stretch! I'm also now successfully into the Champions League and so the amount of games per season is steadily increasing, which is essential!
Joe.
Here's where we're at in March, 9 games remaining this season. - Adam Williams (18yo, 96 apps) - Darren King (22yo, 218 apps - not actively trying with him anymore) and there are two who I'm going to try and crowbar into the team from my latest youth intake; - Sonny Simpson (16yo, 0 apps) - Lee-Roy Griswold (16yo, 0 apps) Of the two, Griswold is really quite impressive but I have so many strong options in his position that I fear I'd sacrifice the squad as a whole to play him too often.. He'll most likely make a bunch of appearances as a substitute until the space opens up, or he improves enough to genuinely be my best option. Sonny Simpson doesn't have the ability just yet, but he looks to have bags of potential and plays in a position that is up for grabs if someone were to impress. If this continues for his career it'll mean he'll take an extra season in comparison. Still hopeful though. Hughes obviously also dropping off, but still on a good pace. Dowling just been in blistering form.

Ackter
You can usually get by with one big injury or a bunch of smaller ones. It's lucky that FM has so few injuries compared to real life or this challenge would be near impossible.

Joe.
I'm going to steal your layout for my updates from hereon... 2024/25 Adam Williams (19): 166 apps Lee-Roy Griswold (17): 64 apps Both Williams and Griswold have developed sufficiently enough to be comfortable in my first XI. Griswold in particular has impressed, and has already scored 20 goals for the first team from his midfield position. There are currently no other players who are good enough to break into the team - certainly not if I want to remain competitive. Unless something special comes along, I'll be focusing solely on these two for the foreseeable.
Ackter
Nice Natural Fitness as well - they should improve a few points further as they age. I haven't had a highly-rated youth come through since Dowling. No-one has turned out to surprise me, either. There's a couple of squad players come through but that's it. Ackter
Just realised that one of my greatest ever players could have easily completed this if I'd given him the appearances when he was young. To be fair, he was brought in as cover and replacement for another of my greatest ever players, but I still feel like I've missed something great here. He's 35 now and has nearly 750 appearances. If his natural fitness was higher I'd actually be tempted to still try for it, but I doubt he's lasting til 40 at this rate Just goes to show that even players at 18 or more can still accomplish this. Ackter
2048/49 Margetson (29): 762 apps Dubois (35): 739 Lowe (28): 661 Dowling (23): 437 apps, 246 goals More injuries mean Lowe is falling slightly more off-pace again. Margetson's wage demands are starting to get stupid, and his agent refuses to accept contracts longer than 2-3 seasons, so he could easily refuse to resign and leave in the future. Also, bugger it - I'm going for it with Dubois cause you never know
