September 22, 2021 - Serie A: Roma (1-2-1, 5 pts., 14th) vs. Cagliari (0-2-2, 2 pts., 18th)

I'm really concerned about the early-season performance of one of our key guys, Stephan El Shaarawy. He's got just one goal and zero assists, and a 6.43 rating, through our first four matches. But if there's a team for him to get back on track against, it's this Cagliari team, which has not played well against some weaker competition thus far. We insert Penaranda into the starting lineup after his two-goal performance in our last match, and are ready for this game and ready to climb back up the table. We've got Juventus on the road in four days, so we need to get a result here or risk a really poor start to our season.

Well, it's officially panic time. Our offense just can't get it together, we concede on a terrible own-goal by Manolas in the 59th, and lose to a terrible team at home, 0-1. It's time for a team meeting as we prepare for the Juventus match. I can't believe this is happening.

September 26, 2021 - Serie A: Juventus (4-0-1, 12 pts., 1st) vs. Roma (1-2-2, 5 pts., 15th)

We've got just seven goals in five league games. Salah is back from his sprained ankle and we need him, so he's in. We desperately need a result against a Juventus team that we've played well against during my tenure.

We've had some exciting matches against Juventus, but this one is not shaping up that way as we allow goals in the 11th and the 24th and are down 0-2. I don't know what our deal is, but we need to wake up. We do in the 32nd, as Salah scores off a pass from Shaarawy to bring us to 1-2. Right before the half we tie it on another from Salah, and we're back in business. Early in the second half El Shaarawy scores his first of the year on a beautiful pass from Salah, and we go up, 3-2! We hold that lead, and in the 73rd Juventus has a man sent off. We hang on for a 3-2 win and an incredible two-goal comeback, easily our best result of the year.

September 30, 2021 - Euro Cup Group Stage, Game 2: SK Rapid Wien (0-1-0, 1 pt., 3rd) vs. Roma (1-0-0, 3 pts., 1st)

Rapid Wien drew 0-0 with Braga on the road in its opener, which is actually a really nice result for them. We destroyed Rosenborg in our first match and with a win here we'll be in good position heading into our two matches with Braga.

We're in control of this one throughout, and Salah scores in the 36th to put us up 1-0 at the half. He scores again in the 72nd and we're cruising. Rapid Wien scores on a free kick late, but we clamp down for the 2-1 win. Braga draws with Rosenborg, and we have a four-point lead in the group two matches in.

October 3, 2021 - Serie A: Roma (2-2-2, 8 pts., 11th) vs. Bologna (4-1-1, 13 pts., 1st)

Bologna has been the story of the young season thus far. The recently promoted team has won its last four matches in Serie A and has outscored its opponents 11-1 in those four matches. We certainly can't take this team lightly. We've got a tired group of guys right now but we've got two weeks off after this one, so it's time to man up and get a result.

Bologna scores 46 seconds into the match and it's yet another poor offensive first half for us as we trail 0-1 at the break. It's looking like another lost match for us until the 86th, when Bologna is called for a justified penalty and El Shaarawry converts it. We salvage a draw, but it's another game we should have won.592cdc2520f59_ScreenShot2017-05-29at9_42_05PM.thumb.png.fa28220d0213680409e29ae7b0b2b28d.png

October 17, 2021 - Serie A: Chievo (2-2-3, 8 pts., 14th) vs. Roma (2-3-2, 9 pts., 12th)

We lose a key player, right back Davide Calabria, for 6-7 weeks as he's injured on duty for Italy. Luckily we have a quality player in Kelvin Amian Adou to take his spot. We're treading water here and this can only last for so long before the board will start to question my leadership.

Yet again we concede first in this one, in the 41st minute, and head to the break down. I tear into the team at the break and they come out with a goal two minutes into the second half, with El Shaarawy netting the goal. But we play a sloppy, ridiculous rest of the half, giving away passes and snatching at chances. We draw, 1-1, and still have just two wins. 2-4-2 is not the record I expected us to have eight games in. To add injury to insult, El Shaarawy goes down late and will now miss the next couple weeks.

October 21, 2021 - Euro Cup Group Stage, Game 3: Roma (2-0-0, 6 pts., 1st) vs. Braga (0-2-0, 2 pts., 2nd)

Whatever's gone on in the league thus far, at least we've been good in this competition, and if we win this home match we're all but assured of advancing. So I'm starting the regular team even though we're in another stretch where we play twice a week for three weeks.

We play a scoreless 40 minutes, then we break through big, first with Salah scoring on a long pass from midfield courtesy of Barbosa (who is replacing El Shaarawy), then seconds before the halftime whistle after a corner pinballs around to Barreca, who slams it home. We're up 2-0 at the break, the second half is basically a 45-minute game of keep away, and we win in another strong Euro Cup outing, 2-0.

Halfway through the competition things couldn't have gone much better for us...

October 24, 2021 - Serie A: Roma (2-4-2, 10 pts., 12th) vs. Genoa (1-3-4, 6 pts., 18th)

I'll be honest... a wrote the game recap for this one, then inadvertently closed out my browser and lost it. Long story short, we score first, have a man sent off right before halftime, give up the lead early in the second, then are totally bailed out by a penalty on a cross that looked like it was going to sail over everyone in the box. Bernardeschi converts it, we hold on, and win 2-1. We've now gone six straight matches without losing, and appear to be on track a bit.

October 28, 2021 - Serie A: Sassuolo (2-2-5, 8 pts., 17th) vs. Roma (3-4-2, 13 pts., 11th)

Sassuolo has been a house of horrors for me and I've never one there as a visitor. But these guys have been terrible thus far, and if we're going to break this streak, now's the time to do it. We're without Barreca (who has been phenomenal thus far) and Kranevitter due to suspensions. With a win we can shoot up to the top six in the league despite our lackluster start to the season. El Shaarawy is back for this one, but I'm starting him on the bench.

It's another back and forth match, as we go down 0-1, tie it, go down 1-2, then tie it again. In the 82nd, we give up a third, and can't come back this time. Sassuolo is now officially my hate team for this save. That's four losses in four visits, and we can't take advantage of our chance to move up the table. Argh,

October 31, 2021 - Serie A: Napoli (5-2-3, 17 pts., 4th) vs. Roma (3-4-3, 13 pts., 12th)

I just want to get back on the pitch and get a win against a good Napoli side.

We capture a 2-2 draw after scoring the equalizer late, in the 79th, on a goal by Barbaso. Hopefully this will be a sign of things to come, as we lose Stephan El Shaarawy for 7-8 weeks to a knee injury. It's been a lost season for him, and it's shaping up to be a lost season in Serie A for us, as we're now in 13th position and are seven points out of Champions League position.

November 4, 2021 - Euro Cup Group Stage, Game 4: Braga (0-2-1, 2 pts., 3rd) vs. Roma (3-0-0, 9 pts., 1st)

We also lost right back Kelvin Amian Adou in our last match, and he'll miss this game, although he'll be back by the weekend. The issue is, with Calabria down, I have no right backs to play. So I move center back Gianluca Mancini over there and take my chances. If we win this match we're officially in the knockout phase and are almost assured of winning the group.

We get Kevin Strootman sent off but maintain our composure. We score first on a nice strike by Bernardeschi right before the half. Braga scores to equalize just a couple minutes into the second half, and that's it. It's a 1-1 draw, and we're officially in the knockout stages.

Such contrasting situations in Europe and the league. What's the mood like with the board?

Also with your screenshots, could you right click on where you've uploaded it, copy image and paste it directly here? That way they won't be blurry when I look on my phone. :D

Hey Keano I'll do that from now on. Thanks.

The board is still "satisfied," but I can't imagine they will be for much longer.

November 7, 2021 - Serie A: Roma (3-5-3, 14 pts., 13th) vs. Atalanta (3-6-2, 15 pts., 9th)

Prior to this match I decide to make a tactical tweak to spur our offense. I'd been playing my left center midfielder, Strootman, as a deep-lying playmaker and Rabiot next to him as an advanced playmaker. For this match, I switch both of them to the traditional central midfielder role, and place them both in "automatic" duty.

It works. Bernardeschi scores on the first possession of the game, and Salah adds another in the seventh minute. We play our best game of the Serie A season, winning 2-1, with only a late goal making the game seem closer than it actually was. We're in the top half of the table for the first time this season, and are surprisingly just four points back of third place.

World Cup Update

The field is set for the 2022 World Cup after the final qualifiers are played. Here's who's in along with China, the host nation, which took over from Qatar:

  • Africa - One big surprise as Cape Verde will make its first World Cup appearance after winning a group that included 14th-ranked Senegal. Also advancing are Cameroon, Egypt, Nigeria, and the Ivory Coast.
  • Asia - It's Japan, Iran, Australia, and South Korea. No surprises.
  • North America - Mexico and the US advance, along with a mild surprise, Jamaica.
  • South America - Again, no shocks as it's Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Colombia.
  • Europe - Group winners include Belgium, Poland, Serbia, France, England, Germany, Portugal, and Italy. Two shocks are Greece winning its group over Spain to advance, and in a big shock, Kosovo wins its group. Second-place finishers are Croatia, Russia, and Holland, meaning the biggest shock of qualifying season is that Spain misses out. Huge.
  • Playoffs - Chile beats New Zealand easily, 4-0 on aggregate, and in a surprise result, United Arab Emirates goes down 1-3 on the road at Costa Rica, but comes back to win its home match 2-0 to advance.

I'll post the groups after the draw is held in a couple weeks.

In other news, my favorite Serie A team, Sampdoria, fired its manager over the break. They're just 1-3-8 thus far and are dead last in the league. Good luck to them.

November 20, 2021 - Serie A: Inter (5-3-4, 18 pts., 6th) vs. Roma (4-5-3, 17pts., 10th)

With all the complaining I've been doing, we've lost just one of our last 10 matches over all competitions. This is a big match here after the two-week break for the final World Cup qualifiers. Inter has struggled after winning the league a year ago, and are just a point up on us. Mattias Krenevitter is lost for 6-8 weeks after being injured on duty with the Argentinian team, which is a pretty big loss as he's our third central midfielder. But we're ready to build on the momentum we (hopefully) gained from our good performance against Atalanta.

It's a great, back and forth first half that remains scoreless until the 42nd, when Inter scores on a goal that was clearly, maddeningly offside. I'm fuming as the game goes deep into the second half 0-1, as it looks like the refs are going to create a big swing with the terrible goal. But late in the match, Salah scores to equalize it, and we draw, 1-1. I felt like we were the better team in this one, and we're 1-2-0 in our matches against the three teams that finished ahead of us last season.

November 25, 2021 - Euro Cup Group Stage, Game 5: Rosenborg (0-1-3, 1 pt., 4th) vs. Roma (3-1-0, 10 pts., 1st)

We're up in Norway and we're going to start some reserves for this one, then hope that we can bring in three more because we're winning by a good margin.

This is a really entertaining game. We concede first after Dejan Drazic gets called for a penalty in the box and Rosenborg converts. Then, starting in the 44th minute, four goals are scored in the next five minutes of game action. Drazic atones for his mistake with his first goal of the season for us, then Salah fires a wicked shot that bounces off a defender for an own goal, and we're up 2-1 at the half. Right out of the gate in the second half Rosenborg ties it, but in the 47th, just 40 seconds later, Penaranda scores to put us back up, 3-2. That's the final score in a well-played game where we started three backup defenders and seven reserves overall. We win Group J, SK Rapid Wien draws Braga to clinch second, and the final game of group stage will be meaningless for all involved.

November 29, 2021 - Serie A: Roma (4-6-3, 18 pts., 10th) vs. Fiorentina (5-2-6, 17 pts., 12th)

Add Fiorentina to the list of teams that are struggling during the first half of the year (of the six teams in European competition this year, Inter, Sampdoria, Fiorentina, and us are all outside of the top six right now). They are winless in their last three matches, and have scored just once in those games. But this is still a quality club, and we'll need to bring something to secure a result for the 12th time in our last 13 matches.

It's a scoreless first half until seconds before the whistle, when Salah scores on a great pass from Drazic to put us up. The game ends, 1-0, and despite having just 39% possession it actually might be our best overall performance of the year, as Fiorentina manages just a single shot on goal. Surprisingly, it's our first clean sheet of the Serie A season. The result sees us shoot up to seventh in the league, and we're now five points back of third with a favorable stretch of matches to close out the first half of the season.

December 5, 2021 - Serie A: Roma (5-6-3, 21 pts., 7th) vs. Torino (8-2-4, 26 pts., 3rd)

This is another big match for us. Torino is off to a great start and has really become a quality Serie A team. They've finished in the top half each of the past five seasons and seven of the past eight. They are second in goal differential, and their 25 goals are second-most in the league. But we're playing really good football right now and have lost just one match since late September. So this will be a good one. With a win we move to within two points of them.

I've kept Dejan Drazic in the starting lineup since the Rosenborg match and he assisted on the only goal of our last match and he continues his good run in this one, opening the scoring in the 20th to give us a 1-0 lead that we hold at the break. The second half turns into a total goal-fest, with Torino scoring just a couple minutes in, then the two teams trading goals to make it 2-2. Torino takes its first lead in the 70th, but Drazic scores his second of the game just five minutes later to make it 3-3. That's how it ends. We miss an opportunity here but still draw against a team playing really well, and we remain in 7th.

December 9, 2021 - Euro Cup Group Stage, Game 6: Roma (4-1-0, 13 pts., 1st) vs. SK Rapid Wien (2-2-1, 8 pts., 2nd)

We've clinched Group J, Rapid Wien has clinched second, and I have no interest in this match. I start what is essentially the reserve team here to rest up the starters for our next league match.

Our B Team plays well. We get goals from Gabriele Cicala (his first for us) and Vicenzo Grifo (ditto), and wind up drawing 2-2 when we can't hold a late lead. I'm not too concerned, and am actually pretty pleased to keep our string of results going while resting literally every starter on our team except our keeper.

We finish 4-2-0 in the group, and await the draw for the first knockout round, which is the day after our next league match.

December 12, 2021 - Serie A: Empoli (6-3-7, 21 pts., 11th) vs. Roma (5-7-3, 22 pts., 9th)

We start a healthy first team in this one minus El Shaarawy, who is still out for another couple weeks. We actually place Gerson on the transfer list, as he's basically been complaining all season about wanting to leave and it's affecting his play. He's basically lost his starting spot to Drazic. We can potentially get $20+ million for him in the next window, which would be nice.

We strike first in this one, on a goal off a corner kick that Juan Jesus puts in. But Empoli ties it late in the first half. The second half is all us, as Paneranda scores in the 65th and then Cicala, who had just been subbed in, makes a great move in the box and his shot bounces off an Empoli defender for an own-goal that I really wish he'd gotten credit for. Empoli scores in the 86th to cut it to 3-2, but we hang on for a good road win.

Prior to our Italian Cup match the First Knockout Stage draw of the Euro Cup takes place. The draw is not particularly kind to us, as we get four-time champions Sevilla of La Liga. The first leg will be in Spain in February.

December 15, 2021 - Italian Cup, First Round: Roma vs. Palermo

I'll be honest: I'm just not feeling this match. The board has placed no importance on the Italian Cup and frankly neither have I. So I start a bunch of subs for this one and hope for the best. We've got a big home match against fourth-place Verona over the weekend, so I want key guys rested and ready to go.

We win, 1-0, on a goal in the 62nd minute by Gerson. Palermo scores a goal in stoppage time to tie it, but it's called back by a questionable offsides call. The win extends our unbeaten streak to 10 in all competitions, and we advance to the quarterfinals to play two-time defending Cup champion Juventus.

December 18, 2021 - Serie A: Roma (6-7-3, 25 pts., 10th)  vs. Verona (9-4-4, 31 pts., 4th)

We're 9-7-1 in our last 17 matches and we finish the first half of our Serie A campaign with three winnable matches. This will be the most difficult, as Verona has been fabulous this season. They've allowed a league-low 10 goals in their 17 matches. We've played one fewer matches than most teams in the league, so with a win here and a midweek win in our makeup match, we can move into the top five in the league as we head into a two-week break.

We show very little respect for Verona's defense in the first half. Bernardeschi does what he does, scoring on a fantastic free kick that finds the top right corner of the net, then a brilliant pass from Salah finds Penaranda who just dinks it into a virtually open net for the second score. But we concede with just 10 seconds left in stoppage time, and are up 2-1 at the break.

Verona gets the equalizer in the 60th, and the game ends in a 2-2 draw. This is a missed opportunity for us, although the results pushes us up to 8th in the league, two spots back from a continental qualification spot.

December 22, 2021 - Serie A: Pescara (5-7-5, 22 pts., 11th) vs. Roma (6-8-3, 26 pts., 9th)

These two teams have drawn the most matches in the league this year, so a draw may be in the works. With a win we can move into the top five of the league. This will be our last match without El Shaarawy, who'll be back after the break. I'd love to head into the holidays on a winning note.

Salah scores right out of the gate in the 9th minute, and we play a solid first half to maintain the 1-0 lead. But Pescara pulls even in the 68th, and it's another draw for us as the clock ticks down. Then, Pescara is called for a foul with just seconds to go, and Sturaro crosses one into the box right to Gerson, who nails it for the winner! It's a big victory for us, and we head into the break on an eight-game unbeaten streak in the league and a 12-game streak overall. The win puts us in 6th place, just three points back of Napoli and Verona for fourth.

At the turn of the new year Mohamed Salah wins his second straight African Player of the Year Award. He's really become a world-class player and is on pace to challenge for the league lead in goals again this season, although his assist number is way down.

We do get some bad news that may complicate some things for us. Dejan Drazic, who's been played very well for us at left attacking midfielder, goes down with a double hernia in training, and is lost for 5-7 weeks. This means that Gerson, who I transfer listed a few weeks ago and expects to be sold, is back in the starting lineup. Brazilian club Gremio makes a $23 million offer for him, which I would have jumped on had it not been for this injury. I pass on the offer for now, and hope that maybe I can sell him at on deadline day, once Drazic has a chance to get closer to full health. Unfortunately, that option is off the table Barcelona ups its offer to a take-it-or-leave it $26.5 million fee. Gerson has not been good for me this year (1 goal, 1 assist, 6.75 rating) and he wants to leave. I accept the offer, and will use the money from this transfer to bring in a replacement.

The good news is, we get Stephan El Shaarawy back for this match, and he's going back into the starting lineup despite us going undefeated in the 11 matches we played without him. He's still a deadly offensive player, and I want him back on the first team.

January 6, 2022 - Serie A: Sampdoria (2-4-12, 10 pts., 20th) vs. Roma (7-8-3, 29 pts., 6th)

Our first match of 2022 wraps up the first half of the Serie A season, and its against a Sampdoria team that is in a shocking free fall. These guys finished third in 2019, fell to 14th the next season, moved up to qualify for Euro Cup with a 5th-place finish last year, and has totally bottomed out this season. They are going to need a really strong finish to the season to avoid relegation, as they're eight points from safety right now. But our three losses this year are against a Sassuolo team that's currently 12th, a Lazio team that's 19th, and a Cagliari team in 16th. So motivation better not be a factor here. This is the second of three straight road matches for us, and with 4th-place Verona playing 5th-place Napoli this week, we have a chance to either pass one of them in the standings or move to within a point of both of them.

We dominate the first half. Adrien Rabiot scores his first of the season for us in the 26th on a feed from El Shaarawy, then Salah puts one in right before the half and we're up 2-0 at the break. Sampdoria scores in the 74th, but that's it, and it's a 2-1 win for us. Napoli beats Verona, so we remain in 6th but are surging in the league.

Roma 2021-2022 Midseason Report

I'm writing this while watching the Champions League final and I'll just go on the record here throwing my support behind Juventus. It's 0-0 in the 16th as I compile this report.

Serie A: 8-8-3, 32 pts., 6th

Here's where the league stands at the halfway point...

593308acb6295_ScreenShot2017-06-03at2_06_07PM.thumb.png.d155552252a60ac44716db621e696b99.png

It's been a weird season for us thus far. Other than our 3-2 win over Juventus and a dominant win over Palermo, we really haven't played any matches where I can say we were at our absolute best. Last year we overwhelmed a lot of our opponents with our offense en route to being easily the best attack in the league. We are well off our goal-scoring pace from a year ago, although we're still third with 34 goals scored. Defensively I haven't been that impressed with Rulli, our new goalkeeper. We're on pace to give up just four fewer goals than a year ago. So we've slowly climbed back into contention in the league, and are 7-6-1 in our last 14 league matches. I feel like there's still a good chance for this club to climb into the top three, but given expectations for the year, halfway through I'd give us a grade of B-.

Euro Cup: Advanced to First Knockout Stage; Won Group J

We played well in our group and scored 15 goals in our six matches. This wasn't a particularly difficult group, but we did what we needed to do. We've got a big test against Sevilla in the knockout stage. Grade: A-

Italian Cup: Advanced to Quarterfinal

We started reserves in the first round win over Palermo. The big test is our next match, home against Juventus. Grade: B+

First Half Most Valuable Player: F Mohamed Salah

Once again Salah has been our offensive leader. He's got 10 goals, good for third in the league, and four assists, and he's fifth in the league with a 7.20 average rating. He had a monster second half last season. If he can do so again, I'll feel great about our chances. Runners-Up: DC Kostas Manolas has been our best defender and has really stepped up his game this year. AMR Federico Bernardeschi is off his scoring and assists pace from last year, but has still scored seven and assisted on four in the league.

Second Half Outlook

I predicted a 22-8-8 record this year. For that to happen we'd need to go 14-0-5 in the second half, which, probably not. But I think things are set up for us to meet the Champions League qualification expectation. We have Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter all at home, and we are slowly but surely rounding into really good form. I'm assuming we'll bring in a new face or two before the transfer window closes, and we're going to lose Gerson to Barcelona, but I am cautiously optimistic that we join the top three by the end of the year. As for Euro Cup, I just don't know how we'll do against Sevilla, but I trust this team to rise up when it matters most.

January 9, 2022 - Serie A: Lazio (5-4-10, 19 pts., 17th) vs. Roma (8-8-3, 32 pts., 6th)

Lazio got out of the relegation zone by winning its last match over Genoa (which led my former team to fire its manager), and they're actually on a four-game unbeaten streak in the league. But we've got extra motivation after these guys ruined our home opener this season, and we should get revenge here.

Not a good start as Salah sprains his ankle early and has to come out. Lazio scores in the 19th to go up, but Salah's replacement, Penaranda, scores to tie it in the 25th. Early in the second half, Gerson hits Penaranda again to put us up 2-1, but Lazio equalizes five minutes later to tie it. Kostas Manolas gets sent off in the 64th, and I decide to go defensive. We draw, 2-2, and while the result moves us into 5th, getting just one point in two matches against a poor Lazio team is not what I had in mind.

January 12, 2022 - Serie A: Roma (8-9-3, 33 pts., 5th) vs. Crotone (6-2-12, 20 pts., 17th)

Salah is out for three weeks with his ankle, but Penaranda is playing well and will step in. We're without both of our central defenders for this one as Juan Jesus and Manolas both are gone with yellow card accumulation. Thankfully, Crotone is not very good, and we should still be able to get a result here.

It's another game where we don't play our best but squeak out a result. After a scoreless first half, Gerson nets the only goal of the match in the 71st, and we win, 1-0. The victory moves us to fourth, our highest position of the season.

January 15, 2022 - Serie A: Palermo (10-3-8, 33 pts., 6th) vs. Roma (9-9-3, 36 pts., 4th)

We're entering an important stretch of games that will see us face this Palermo team, along with third-place AC Milan and league leader Juventus, in the next month. We've got the Italian Cup match with Juventus upcoming this week as well. With a win here we can create some distance between us and the teams chasing us for fourth.

Palermo strikes first in the 6th, but we're getting some chances and outplaying them early. Midway through the half El Shaarawy ties it, and five minutes into the second half Juan Jesus scores on a corner kick to give us the lead. El Shaarawy adds another in the 56th to make it 3-1, and that's the final. It's a great road win against a team right behind us in the standings, and with the victory we extend our league unbeaten streak to 12 and keep pace with the league leaders.

January 18, 2022 - Italian Cup Quarterfinal: Roma vs. Juventus

I'm not going to alter what has been a good formula for me lately: resting key starters in cup matches. So I shelve Calabria, Strootman, and El Shaarawy for this one. We get AC Milan this weekend, and that's the key match this week for us.

We're the better team for the first 45 but play a scoreless first half. Just a minute into the second half Penaranda scores to put us up, but Juventus ties it less than five minutes later. They dominate the remainder of the half, but can't score, and we go to extra time.

Both teams look tired in the extra frames, and no true chances are generated. So we head to penalties, where I've never lost in my career. Each team scores on its first two, then Rulli saves Juventus' third try, and the door is open for us. Strootman and Grifo score, and we're up 4-3 heading to the last frame. Juventus scores, and Sturaro has a chance to be the hero. He steps up, nails it right down the middle, and scores to win it for us! We are on to the semis of the Italian Cup for the seconds straight year, and knock off the two-time defending cup champs. Our great run continues!!

January 23, 2022 - Serie A: Roma (10-9-3, 39 pts., 4th) vs. AC Milan (11-9-2, 42 pts., 3rd)

I reluctantly let Gerson go after promising him he'd be moved to Barcelona. As his replacement, I make an offer for 29-year-old Serbian Filip Kostic of Girodins de Bordeaux, and am confident of securing him by the deadline, which is a week away.

Obviously this is the match of the season for us thus far, as with a win we'll pass Milan for third in the league. I wish we hadn't played 30 extra minutes in our midweek match, but Milan did too in losing on penalties to Serie B side Cesena. We're also down Gerson, so Grifo starts at left attacking midfielder. We've won five of our last six matches, and I feel good about getting another result here.

Adalberto Penaranda gets us off to a great start with a goal in the third minute. Then, things totally fall apart. Milan ties it in the 11th, takes the lead in the 22nd, and then after a terrible foul by Kostas Manolas in the box, convert the PK to take a 3-1 lead at the half. It certainly looks like the run is finally over.

Things only get worse at the start of the second half when El Shaarawy goes down with a dislocated jaw. In the 60th we close it to 2-3 on a second goal by Penaranda, and go into attack mode to get the equalizer. It comes in the 79th on a goal by Grifo in his first start at left midfielder. If we can salvage a draw from this I'll take it. But the boys are relentless, and in the 89th minute we score on a corner kick that Manolas converts, and it's 4-3! Just two minutes later Bernardeschi seals it with a great individual effort, and it's an absolutely incredible four-goal second half and a 5-3 win in our most exciting game of the year. We pass AC Milan for third place in the league, and are now in Champions League position.

Woo hoo!

January 30, 2022 - Serie A: Cagliari (5-7-11, 22 pts., 17th) vs. Roma (11-9-3, 42 pts., 3rd)

We're without our two starting forwards against a team that we suffered an inexplicable and frustrating 0-1 home loss to earlier in the year. Since that loss, we've gone 15-9-1 in all competitions. We're a far, far better team than we were back on September 22. Penaranda and Barbosa take the forward spots in this one. We've moved up to third; now we have to stay there, and we've got our sights firmly set on Torino, which is just four points up on us with 15 matches to go.

I wind up cancelling my transfer offer for Filip Kostic and will take my chances with Grifo at left wing. He was phenomenal in his start against Milan (8.3 rating), and Drazic should be back in a couple weeks. I may make an offer for a lesser winger on deadline day just for depth, but right now I see no reason to spend $20+ million on a transfer. We've got $47 million in the transfer bank and are spending $12 million under salary, so we're good. The window closes the day after this match, so we'll see.

I worry a little about hangover after the emotionally draining AC Milan match. We cannot afford a letdown here after we've worked so hard to move up the table.

We're a bit out of sorts in the first half, generating a lot of chances but not converting. Then in the 30th, Barbosa has a pass from a Cagliari defender go right to him. He hits Penaranda with a long pass, the goalie comes out, and Penaranda lobs it over him for the goal to put us up. In the second half it looks like it's going to be a 1-0 win, but Cagliari scores on a fluke goal in the 62nd to tie it. We look lethargic out there, and it appears we're going to leave points on the field. But in stoppage time, Penaranda steals an outlet pass, waltzes in to the keeper, and nails it past him for the winning goal! A great game by Penaranda to get us three huge points, as AC Milan wins but Torino loses, and we're just one point back of second, with Milan right behind us.

Our league unbeaten streak is now at 14, and we're 6-1-0 in our last seven Serie A matches.

Hey guys, thanks! We are absolutely rolling. It's one of my best stretches ever.

Here's the Kosovo screen shot...

Come to think of it, I never posted the World Cup groups, so here they are as well...

Kosovo actually has a chance to advance in a group with Cape Verde, Iran, and Uruguay. That would be huge. Tough draw for the US with Germany and Colombia. Group of death is maybe Group G, but this looks like a pretty even and fair distribution.

I do wind up making a deal on deadline day, and it is for a versatile winger who can play all over the field. We bring in 26-year-old Belgian Zakaria Bakkali from Stoke for $12 million, and sign him for just over $2 million. We had money to spend and I will use him as insurance. He's a nice pickup for us.

February 6, 2022 - Serie A: Roma (12-9-3, 45 pts., 3rd) vs. Juventus (15-7-2, 52 pts., 1st)

We've got nine matches in the next 34 days, including the Italian Cup Semifinal against Sassuolo and the Euro Cup knockout matches with Sevilla. The stretch kicks off with a huge match at home against Juventus, a team we've already beaten twice this season. They look like a lock to get back to the top of Serie A this year as they lead Torino by six and AC Milan and us by seven. But we can make a real statement with another win here, and close to four while potentially moving up to second as Torino is on the road at Inter.

We get Mohamed Salah back for this one, and although we've won all five matches we've played without him, he's right back in the lineup, paired with Penaranda. Penaranda has been a real savior for us this year, as he's stepped in more than admirably to fill injury voids left by both Salah and El Shaarawy. He's got 10 goals on the season and a 7.20 rating in the league. He was named to the Serie A Team of the Month for January.

Bakkali will be immediately pushed into duty as Bernardeschi gets a virus and will miss this match, and possibly the Italian Cup semi first leg.

After this match we flip-flop Cup and league matches for the next four weeks. I really want to get a result here. It's certainly not easy to beat Juve three times in a row, and they are on an 18-game unbeaten streak of their own, but we're rolling right now with our 14-match streak. Something has to give here.

It's over. We are simply outplayed by the best team in the league. Higuain scores in the 18th, they add another early in the second half, and we just can't break through. We fall, 2-0, and the streak is over. There's not much to say - no crazy goals, no bad calls. We just lose. We're down to fourth, but I still feel great about the rest of the year. I sympathize with the team after the loss, and we'll move on.

February 9, 2022 - Italian Cup Semifinal, First Leg: Sassuolo vs. Roma

I'm not veering from my strategy of resting starters in the Italian Cup, even though Sassuolo and one of two Serie B teams, Cesena and Cittadella, are all that stand between us and my first trophy in Italy. I've already documented my struggles at Sassuolo. We need to keep it close here and put ourselves in good position for our home leg.

Penaranda opens the scoring for us in the 21st on a good pass from Rabiot, and that's the score at halftime. But we completely fall apart in the second half, and Sassuolo takes advantage, scoring five times, including a PK after an absolutely ridiculous foul by Stefano Sturaro. We get one back at the end to make it 5-2. I'm having flashbacks to our lackadaisical effort in the semis last year, and with the 5-2 loss we have a lot of work to do to advance to the final.

February 13, 2022 - Serie A: Bologna (10-5-10, 35 pts., 9th) vs. Roma (12-9-4, 45 pts., 4th)

We've got to get back on track here after two straight losses. Bologna is a decent team but we're better, and with a loss here I'd start to become concerned.

We trade first-half goals, with Bologna scoring first and Salah answering in the 42nd. It's a scoreless second half, and a 1-1 draw. Both AC Milan and Torino lose, so despite our third straight match without a win, we pick up a point on them and are now just two points back of second.

February 17, 2022 - Euro Cup First Knockout Round, First Leg: Sevilla vs. Roma

We're not playing well heading into this match, and Sevilla is not going to feel sorry for us. They've spent the last three years in Champions League before moving back down to Euro Cup this year. They won this thing four straight years, from 2014-2017, so they know what it takes to navigate through this tournament.

We get out of our doldrums and play a really good match in this one. Drazic, starting his first match back from injury, scores in the 12th, and Salah adds one in the 18th. Sevilla cuts it to 2-1 just a minute later, but we play a solid defensive game from there. We miss a couple of good chances in the second half, but take the win and head home for the second leg with a lead.

February 21, 2022 - Serie A: Roma (12-10-4, 46 pts., 4th) vs. Chievo (9-7-10, 34 pts., 11th)

All is not well on the injury front. Right as we get El Shaarawy, Drazic, and Bernardeschi back, we lose a key player in the Sevilla match, as Adrian Rabiot has shin splints and will miss at least five weeks. After a pretty slow start to his Roma career, he's played well and been an anchor for us during our excellent midseason stretch. He's also started 35 of our 36 total matches. Mattias Kranevitter and Stefano Sturaro have each been complaining about playing time, so they'll each see time in Rabiot's absence.

We're also without Kevin Strootman and Antonio Barreca for this one due to suspension, so that's three key starters gone. Chievo is wildly inconsistent team. They're in 11th position but have a -17 goal differential, which is the worst in the league. When they lose, they lose big, and they've got two 5-0 losses, two 5-1 losses and a 6-1 loss. But in their other 21 matches they've got a +6 differential. Let's hope bad Chievo shows up for this one. We play Monday night, so we already know that AC Milan won its match and Torino drew, so we can move up to third with a win and stay two points back of Milan.

Well we don't get bad Chievo in this one, but we are firmly in control throughout this match, even after a scoreless first half. Dejan Drazic finally gets us on the board in the 82nd, and Salah adds the finisher in the 88th to secure it. It's a clean sheet for Rulli and the defense, and we pass Torino and are back in Champions League position. Good, solid win after our hiccups in our last two league matches.

February 24, 2022 - Euro Cup First Knockout Round, Second Leg: Roma vs. Sevilla (Roma leads, 2-1)

We're right back at it midweek with the second leg of our Euro Cup battle. Sevilla is going to come at us in this one to try to neutralize their deficit (obviously), so we need to clamp down, and try to generate some early chances to potentially put this one away.

Sevilla wastes absolutely no time erasing the deficit and taking control, as they score in the 5th and 16th to go up 3-2 on aggregate. The rest of the half is scoreless, and they really clamp down on us defensively in the second half. As the seconds wind down, I can't believe we've blown this lead and are out of this tournament. The ref calls for two minutes of stoppage time, and we make a final run. At 92:02, it happens: El Shaarawy gets past a defender and scores, and we're still alive! The whistle blows seconds after Sevilla restarts the game, and it's 30 extra minutes to decide this!

It's an incredibly tense first 15 minutes, but no one scores. I trust my team in penalties, as we've never lost a game that's gone to kicks. But... we don't have to. In the 120th minute, a shot by El Shaarawy is saved by the Sevilla keeper, but bounces right to Bernardeschi, who puts it in for the winner! It's the most incredible match I've had in this career: facing elimination, we score with literally seconds until the final whistle, then win it in the final minute of extra time. I'm drained after this match, and am going to bed.

Wow! Quite some game against Sevilla! I bet you had a real life fist pump / shout out / jump out of your chair / bang your knee on the underside the desk / explain to the other people in the house what's going on moment (or two) with that one :D

It was 2 a.m. when I finished the game, and yeah, there was a fist pump and a "Yyyessssss!" I was supposed to be catching up on some work; I wasn't.

The Second Knockout Round draw takes place the day after our draining, emotional game with Sevilla. We're one of the last four teams in the draw, along with Ajax, French side Stade Malherbe Caen, and Leverkusen. Leverkusen is drawn next, and they get... Ajax. So we get Caen, and I must say, that's a favorable draw for us.

February 27, 2022 - Serie A: Genoa (8-8-11, 32 pts., 13th) vs. Roma (13-10-4, 49 pts., 3rd)

We have to come back down to Earth after our fantastic comeback in the Euro Cup. Genoa is a team we should defeat, and my old club is only six games free of the relegation zone. But we're tired heading into our seventh match in 21 days, and I'm concerned about this one. With two more Euro Cup matches on the schedule next month, we'll continue to play twice weekly for the foreseeable future.

This one is kind of a nondescript game. Genoa scores first, We equalize at the beginning of the second half, and the game ends, 1-1. I'm still not concerned about our standing in the league, but we can't let games like this get away from us.

March 2, 2022 - Italian Cup Semifinal, Second Leg: Roma vs. Sassuolo (Sassuolo leads, 5-2)

Our next four matches are at home, and the next two are against Sassuolo. I'm going to start the reserves here in the cup match and go on the attack early to just see what can happen. We've dug ourselves a big hole here, and our performance in the first leg really frustrated me, as we had an opportunity to lift the Cup this year and now unless we pull of a miracle that's not going to happen.

It doesn't. We generate some great first-half chances but don't convert until Barbosa scores in the 41st. We can't get another one through, and Sassuolo scores in the 75th on s hot that Rulli lets bounce off his hands. We draw, 1-1, and are out of the Italian Cup.

Is Rulli having some adaptability issues or his he displaying nervousness in the games? Quite surprising that he has performed poorly compared to Allison, who was supposedly a weaker keeper. I had expected Rulli to bail your team out on occasion.

Keep it up in the Europa League though!

March 6, 2022 - Serie A: Roma (13-11-4, 50 pts., 4th) vs. Sassuolo (7-9-12, 30 pts., 15th)

We get a four-day break and are back on the pitch against Sassuolo again. This time we start the A team, and I expect to get a result here. We've got 10 games left in the Serie A season. Time to turn it back on. We're not in any danger right now of falling out of the top five, but it should be noted that with 15th-place Sassuolo facing Serie B side Cesena in the Italian Cup final, the sixth-place team in the league this year is going to be out of luck.

I can tell some fatigue is setting in for our team, as we're not sharp in this one. But we do enough to get by. El Shaarawy scores early for us and we play a really solid defensive game en route to a 1-0 win. After our back-to-back losses to Juventus and Sassuolo, we're back on a seven-match unbeaten streak. AC Milan does us a favor by knocking off Torino, and we're back up to third with a two-point lead over Torino.

Hey inthisspace, I've been pretty surprised at Rulli's relatively poor play. He's given up 38 goals in 29 league games. To make matters worse, Alisson has played well splitting time in goal for Monaco, and they're actually in first place in Ligue 1 and have a chance to break PSG's long streak as champs of that league. Rulli hasn't had any statistical decreases and he's still a 4-star keeper, but he has not been what I've expected.

Thanks for reading!

I just had my second anniversary as manager of Roma. Since being brought in I've gone 51-25-20 in my 96 games overall. I have the highest winning percentage (53%) of any of the four permanent managers they've had since this save started. We don't have any hardware, and those back-to-back semifinal losses in the Italian Cup were frustrating, but overall the board remains pleased with my leadership.

All this is to say, I am less than four months from being out of contract. I believe I've earned an extension, and if offered one I'll take it, as I've really enjoyed managing this club (as evidenced by my marathon playing sessions the last couple weeks). But I'm also noting that Leon Osman is on thin ice at West Ham, as they are treading water in the Premier League and have a tough set of matches to end their season. I will drop everything to manage the Hammers, and if that job comes up I think I have a good chance at it, especially if it frees up at the end of the year. I won't leave Roma before seeing out this season, but the board really should make a commitment to me here soon or my eye may wander.

March 10, 2022 - Euro Cup Second Knockout Round, First Leg: Roma vs. Stade Malherbe Caen

Caen finished 6th in Ligue 1 last year to get into this tournament, and they're 7th this year. They won a Euro Cup group that included Standard of Belgium, Krasnodar of the Russian Premier League, and Ludogorets of Bulgaria. They handled BMG of Germany easily in the first knockout round.

We are the better of these two teams and need to show it here in the home leg.

This game is dominated by one man, and it's Caen goalkeeper Benjami Lecomte. We fire a ton of good shots at him throughout, and he saves every one. Caen never mounts much of an offensive challenge, but we fail on all 10 of our shots on goal, and it's a 0-0 draw in the opening leg. We're still in good position as just a single goal will put a lot of pressure on Caen in next week's match.

That's two straight shutouts for Rulli and I'm attributing it to inthisspace calling him out on the message board.

March 13, 2022 - Serie A: Roma (14-11-4, 53 pts., 3rd) vs. Napoli (13-7-9, 46 pts., 7th)

Napoli fired its coach a couple weeks ago and is operating with a caretaker manager over Genoa last week. We've drawn three of our past four matches, and again, I can see fatigue setting in. But we've got to persevere here as AC Milan and Torino each have cookies on their schedule this week and we've got to expect they will both win.

We let three points slip away in this one. Bernardeschi scores in the 30th and we look strong. But in the 60th, Rulli's scoreless streak ends when a cross bounces off Juan Jesus' foot and redirects into the goal to tie it. The game ends 1-1, our fifth draw in our last six matches. AC Milan suffers a surprising defeat, but Torino wins, and is now ahead of us on goal differential. We're back to fourth.

March 17, 2022 - Euro Cup Second Knockout Round, Second Leg: Stade Malherbe Caen vs. Roma (series tied, 0-0)

I need to make some changes as our attackers are exhausted. Penaranda has been a good luck charm for us all year, and we'll go ahead and pair him with Salah on the front line. We're playing lackluster football right now, and can't afford a sub-par performance against this team on the road.

This is an incredibly tense match. Caen scores first in the 9th, and we're having the same problem we had in our last match: their keeper is stopping great shots from us. But finally, Salah breaks through in the 16th, and we now have that all important away goal.

The next 75 minutes are incredibly exciting, as we keep peppering their keeper and keep being thwarted. As the game winds down, Caen goes into all-out attack, and Rulli needs to make two great saves in the final five minutes. He makes them, and we hold on for the 1-1 draw, and advance to the quarters!

Whew!
