Continental Player Roles.

Recommended Posts

Obviously, everyone knows of the continental roles such as the Libero, Regista, Trequartista, Raumdeuter and the thread currently going regarding the Fantasista, but I'm curious as to whether there are any others.

I want to do something different in FM and I fancy trying to implement player roles that are not already in the game such as the aforementioned Fantasista.

I have tried a brief search on Google but I was unable to find anything which probably means that I was looking for the wrong thing.

Splitting the poacher role into two; off the shoulder vs fox in the box  (not particularly continental but a missing role)

.... you could argue there is a striker role like Henry or Owen typically 'off the shoulder' of the last defender, breaking offside trap, sprinting through the gap between full back and centre half. And there is the fox-in-the-box style poacher who is more someone that just gets themselves in the 6 yard box for tap ins... not necessarily trying to break the offside trap ... i.e. van nistlerooy/Inzaghi

Also as mentioned in the Fantasista post there is the Italian Mezz'ala ...but hard to create in FM as not much individual horizontal movement options.

what about a formation that uses all of the roles you mentioned! and other specialist roles??

you probably get battered but something like this might be fun to watch...

you could try to re-create the volante :) should be interesting. There are tons of player roles that are defined in relation to specific football cultures. South America should be a good area to research in that sense

I've managed to get something very close to the mezz'ala in the 'deep lying box-to-box midfielder' experiment, although I did not employ a 3-man midfield, for which it is best known to feature in. Still, the movement into the half-spaces can be recreated in FM through a combination of instructions rather than having a specific player role to do it.

I imagine you can get close like that. but I would like SI to add more distinction between a CM and an LCM ... also CB and LCB I want to play a back 3 or a mid 3 where the LC and RC of each occupy that space between full back and centre back... at the moment I find they end up on top of each other a bit and act as a CB even if positionally they are LCB i.e. an LCB in tactic creator that doesn't have close down more... generally wont cover the left back space when AI attack down the flank... likewise you cant employ a classic Mezz'ala acting as half space wingers like Iniesta does so well for Barca. they move too vertically ... a wm on support and cut inside does it the other way ... but I don't want the starting position to be wide... I want the cm with the opposite of cut inside.

getting a RCM or LCM to operate in the half-spaces in a 3-man midfield formation isn't necessarily about the role or PI's. It's mostly a case of shape+team width. With a wider team shape the side CM's will drift closer to the flanks. The trouble is combining the horizontal movement and the vertical one to achieve that mix of movement that defines the mezz'ala.

Iniesta is by no means a mezz'ala :) he's more like a roaming playmaker with an intelligent ability to find space on the pitch - a quality that is emphasized and demanded by Barcelona's general style of play. I believe the 'central winger' role that you're looking for used to be easier to create in FM16 with a CM on attack duty. It's a bit more difficult to get him to drift wide in this year's FM though, and it mostly relates to the player having PPM's like 'runs wide with the ball' or 'runs down the left/right flank often'.

I took the iniesta example from external source....but I kind of agree... he does operate a lot in that half space.. doing his la croquet on the left side of the penalty area having picked the ball up centrally and working triangles with cm lb lw

Mezz’ala – outside midfielder that’s not a winger (An example of a mezz’ala is Andrés Iniesta when Barcelona plays with a line of three attacking midfielders such as Fabregas, Xavi, and Iniesta). Clarence Seedorf plays as a mezz’ala when he isn’t played in the center behind the strikers as a trequartista)

I did manage to find a page which listed quite a few different roles, basically Italian terminology, which I am finding interesting. I am still trying to find one referencing South America at the moment.
