Finding a template for a decent 3-4-2-1

I'm also playing this formation. It was an evolution of a 3-5-2 I was experimenting with, and I really like how solid it is. :)

I concede mostly from set pieces as my Sheff Wed squad doesnt like jumping that much. I'm also trying to make my 3 upfront play a little better. They pass the ball around and are happy to shoot from outside :/

Two seasons down the line, I have managed to win the Champions League (season 2) and the World Club Championship (season 3), I picked up the Europa Super Cup as well, but have missed out in the final of the Champions League (season 1), FA Cup (season 2) and the EFL Cup (season 3).

First two seasons, I applied the tactic I posted previously, occasionally moving between standard and control as the situation and opponent demanded. I felt most closely aligned to Jorsin, with this method, not carbon copies, but in the proximity.

Third season, I conceded that improving the squad had not necessarily (or significantly) improved the results so I went with something similar to Vasilli07 suggested, moved to counter and flexible, plus changed AMC Support to AP Support. I felt the tactic was actually more solid and consistent (the usual dip after a CL game), but the end result has not been as good, in part down to two major injuries and a loss of form/mojo by Harry Kane.

I should also point out that I only buy players based of recommendations from the Director of Football, plus I don't use individual player or opposition instructions (because I am not sure about them), so it is a pretty basic blueprint. Worth adding I have finished runner-up on the Premier League in all three seasons.

So next game year the experiment continues by following closely the Ji Sung Park method, if I can find the right players to migrate my MC's to the DMC strata.

Hmm, so it is performing well - but I assume you would have expected to win the PL by now. How close were you to the winner and has it been the same team pipping you each year?

I recall we were closest in the second season, 1 point, 3 and 4 points behind in the other seasons. City won in the last two seasons and Arsenal before that.

Yes I would have expected to win the PL by now, arguably I could have just played a fairly standard 4-2-3-1 wide, with the same instructions and achieved similar results. We do seem to specialise in the CL. Able to beat the tough teams, but lose to teams like Newcastle and Watford with there only shot of the match, and I know that happens in reality as well.

One area of disappointment, and it's self inflicted is player recruitment, I wouldn't use the Director of Football, I have just ended up with a ridiculous wage bill, and lost some of the depth that was previously there.

How have you been doing? How where the changes you made?

My changes went a little too cavalier and I had to rein them in a little. I still find that the bigger clubs away from home are tricky to beat...and the weaker teams tend to sit back and it's hard to know how to go about unlocking them. Sometimes I push too much and get punished during a rare break.

At the moment I'm also doing a non-league save with Wrexham so progress has been a little slow...it all depends on what I'm in the mood for during my limited windows of play.

I know it's massively frowned upon on these forums, but I have to say something.

We are unbeaten in the Champions League for 3 seasons (although I have been beaten on penalties in that time), the game still credits my team as record breakers, however the games following a Champions League match are abysmal. The  teams record following the group stage is W1, D3, L2, from an overall record of W8, D6, L2 relegating the team from challengers to also rans.

I know that this is a quasi realistic feature e.g. Chelsea's success this season is accredited by experts to their lack of European football, having been runner up now three seasons in a row, I am coming to the conclusion that I cannot target a PL championship without not qualifying for the CL, unless I am lucky enough to have such a strong team and tactic that the run of bad results immediately following a CL game proves irrelevant over the course of a season.

Apologies for the moan, it's probably all in my head.

Say it isn't so :)

I agree that it is quasi realistic - Liverpool's title challenge a few years back was in part said to be down to their lack of European football. However, it can and has been done so it must be possible in the game. Maybe it requires a world class squad - though some of my reading on these forums suggests that the ME doesn't react too kindly to constant rotations of your starting line-up (though I don't have enough information to say whether that's true).

How many tactics do you run? If you are fluid in more than one, it may be that you need to change it up from time-to-time to keep the AI on its toes (though I realise there is a risk of such a strategy backfiring).

Ironically we did win the PL, undoubtedly helped by an early exit in the CL.

I play on FM Touch, so the fluidity shouldn't be a factor, but I do rotate for CL games e.g. when playing a weak team, or if we have already qualified, so it may be the Europe factor plus the rotation factor compounding to produce the effect.

In any case, my view on the experiment is:

- Formation and roles, if sensible, are probably less critical than getting mentality and structure correct for the opponent you are playing

- All variants of 3-4-2-1 I used work to a degree, and it's hard to justify or find evidence that one was better than the other.

- The use of in-match changes to mentality and structure, plus a couple of shouts are usually required to get you to the end of a match e.g. more defensive/possession based if you are winning and more aggressive/creative if you are losing

-Has to be a good thing for the game (and my personal enjoyment) that developing a single static blueprint was beyond me, sure someone else can do this, but I didn't

Generally I went for AP/S, AM/A and CF/S combination. Arguably CF/A works as well.

I don't think I ever hit the jackpot in terms of defining the front three. Workmanlike but not spectacular. Ironically my young English superstar SC, declined over the three years of my experiment, which is why I favour the CF/S (first season he was on fire goals wise, then injury took its toll.

I was on forced leave, HUNT3R banned for some asinine stuff over on another forum. I did get a chance to reply to one of the DM's I got though, hopefully it worked out for you.

All hail Luciano Spalletti by the way, who destroyed Villarreal and Torino this week using a 3-4-2-1, although I don't fully understand how Radja Naing fits in as an attacking midfielder. That boy Emerson looks like Roberto Carlos...

Just started a game unemployed and got the Spurs job in mid January. I will muck about a little and see how we can win games and still keep the board happy with possession/attacking football.

I'm in the Prem with Sheff Wed, mostly with League One players, and we just finished 10th. I've been experimenting and playing around with this for about a week now. Still unable to find quality interaction on a consistent basis for my front 3, but I guess I am struggling because of the quality of my players. We suffer from time to time against the powerhouses and their 19 pace 19 acc wingers. Overall, I think we are ok.

I will have more time after the Carnaval in Brazil :D and I intend to post some pics and continue the discussion about this tactic.
