Tactical Central & Strategy Design by LL

INTRO

For me, tactics are a combination of things. Club reputation, manager reputation, players and objectives are just as important aspects as getting the settings right within the strategies.

When I chose a club then I put them into one of these three different categories:

1 - The Master-Class

2 - The Tactician

3 - The Relegation Battler

Naturally, these season expectations will change from season to season regularely throughout your career. This is another way of adapting tactically from year to year as your teams familiarity/success rates plus how your opponent compares itself to your team - in short terms, to avoid second season blues or other long term tactical errors. The AI adapts to you and it's wise to adapt as well, because football is a simply game of attacking or defending - so, it really pays to know what to do when. The strategies and settings offer all of these options...

DESIGNED TACTIC SETS INCLUDED IN THREAD:

4-4-2 KicknRush - English Kick and Rush football. GoRouteOne passing (Long Ball) with a Target Man. Simple Very Fluid football

4-4-2 EddieHowe - More of a passing type of English football with technical players. Flexible football with possession in mind

4-4-1-1 (4-2-3-1 & 4-1-4-) Mourinho - Advanced direct type of lethal touch football. Fluid football with tactical know-how

4-2-3-1 (4-1-4-1) Arsene - Advanced short passing possession football. Fluid football with the need of highly technical players

5-1-2-2 DM (3-5-2) Juve - Conte's time at Juventus. Mixed passing style with loads of defending strength. Highly Structured result orientated football

STRATEGIES

Once you have discovered what tactics/strategies work for your next upcoming opponent, then making the settings within the tactic you will use craves a certain balance in my experience. Duties and roles combined cohertly really makes or breaks a tactic. I tend to spread out the roles so that there is a diversity within the team - which usually opens more options. I link the team shape to how many different 'specialized' roles that I implent in the team. So basically, 1 specialized role means Very Fluid and for every extra specialized role - I gradually more up the team shape ladder.

I break up the seven tactics like so (to make them more easy to categorize). 2 forms of attacking strategies (Attack & Control), 2 forms of defending (Counter & Defend), 1 middle of the scale tactic which easily transforms into (Counter or Control) and 2 late on in the game tactics (last ten minutes) which are Contain and Overload.

USING STRATEGIES

Top heavy formations are good for the more attacking strategies and bottom heavy formations are naturally good for the more defending strategies.

Relegation Battler: If your team is battling against relegation, I tend to play more cautious and direct. Grinding in results is key. The three strategies I chose as primary >

Control - For all home games where I am favorite

Standard - When I am 'up against it' or large underdog at home. Or on the rare occasion I am favorite away from home.

Defensive - Basically all my away games.

Master-Class: If your team is going for honours, I tend to play more an attacking and passing type of football. Outplaying your opponents is key. The three primary strategies >

Attack - For basically all my home games. Against other world class opponents, I might start more cautious (Control) - but this really depends and is up to the manager what the game plan is at that point.

Control - as a more cautious home tactic, but mostly for those away games where you are large favorite and should win the match.

Counter - for those tough away games, especially when away in Europe after a good result at home. As a master-class team, my team is good enough to play effective counter attack against the best of the best.

I tend to have the Standard strategy somewhere close by (usually few clicks from your Control strategy should be easy), because it is a good strategy to use as slight favorites in away games.

Tactician: In this category I am a team inbetween the two above. I usually start out using the same type of game plan as the Relegation Battler in terms of the three primary tactics - but might find myself having to move slightly up towards the Master-Class way of playing due to good form (or moving down again if I strike really bad form ;-)). Here in this managerial category the aim is to up your (and your club's) reputation to attract better players and bigger venues.

Generally:

Overload:  last 10 minutes to grab a vital goal

Attack:  large home favorites

Control: close match odds at home or large away favorites - large favorites on neutral pitch

Standard:  large underdogs at home field or slight favorite away from home - close odds on neutral pitch

Counter:  slight underdog away (and you are sure your team have enough pace against your opponent) -  underdog on neutral pitch

Defensive: any underdog away (Relegation Battler/Tactician) or large underdog (Tactician/Master-Class)

Contain: last 10 minutes to protect the score line

Final Note: keeping your players desciplined (fines for poor performances and sending offs) and sometimes you just need to take a stand!

KICK'NRUSH 4-4-2

To start things off, here is the good old english kick and rush type of football. Keeping things really simple. Key for these tactics is to get a really good Target Man (Strength, Heading & Jumping). Most other places on the team, speed is a commodity. Good for Lower Leagues or just to get a hang of the game - easy to use and can really be used at all levels. Very Fluid tactics that has the Target Man as a Focal Point. Stick to positions is the mantra.

EDDIE HOWE 4-4-2

On his way to becoming a new Sir Alex, Howe plays the type of foorball that could give him a very good career. This is a more adventurous type of football and you can easily evolve from the KicknRush given that you start getting those type of players in that can handle this type of football (technic, passing, pace). He is a Flexible in team shape where as Sir Alex might be more Structured, but other than that - pretty close in playing styles, in my oppinion.

Match preparation: will use Attacking Movement as often as possible but listens closely to scout reports to make the right decision.

Tactical changes during matches: due to his status as a "Tactician" manager, he makes frenquent changes if things are not working out (higher use of the strategy ladder). Won't necessarily go to Contain or Overload unless abosuletly vital for the result.

ARSENE 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-4-1

Top club reputation, top manager reputation, fantastic facilities and a squad to go with it. This type of game play is great to be at and this type of football creates, without a doubt, the best of this ME. Mostly top heavy formation with a team full of talent (technic, passing and pace). Attacking and a creative football. When you take over from Arsene, get rid of slow defenders and carry on the tradition of getting in more of that talent. Tactics are great for teams of similar caliber. Fluid type of football where most players have 'behavioral movement' (PPM) - PPMs always become an important part of my game plan as well.

MOURINHO_4-4-1-1_(4-2-3-1 & 4-1-4-1)

Although Mourinho has proven hiself to be a great manager, he still differs from the Arsene. He has always been an expert to transforming teams into Champions, that is why he starts out more cautious in terms of formations until the point that he has essembled a great squad. He uses those type of settings do well for most good Tactician teams and naturally goes down well with world class teams with suble changes to his 'perferred' formations.

Perfers more physical players (strength, stamina, workrate with okay pace). Fluid football with a certain degree of caution - a 'lethal touch' type of football. Tends to have a lot of players with 'behavioral movement' (PPM).

Match Preparation: there is a rumour that Mourinho perfers Defensive positioning, but I think he thoroughly scouts his opponents and makes a calculated decision.

Tactical changes during matches: he usually sticks to his game plan and if he does change, it will be more in the lines of player positioning to shut out opponent threats or to exploit a tactical weakness in the opponent (using DM or an AM or slightly pushing the wings forward). Will most likely use the Contain or Overload in the last ten minutes for real close games.

SIMEONE 4-4-2 & 4-4-1-1 (4-2-2-1-1)

This is the structured type of football. Simeone is quite cautious and relies on players with good phsical attributes - especially in the center of the park where he generally has two players with high closing down. Team work, work rate and stamina are required with a good portion of tackling attributes for the center Mids - no flimsy flair to take on these roles. Not a conventional type of football, so it is required that you carry on finding those sepcial players to suit the tactic (unlike Arsene and Mourinho that can more easily slot in players into the positions due to the fluid team shape). Retraining players positions might come in handy in the long run...

The JUVENTUS 5-1-2-2 DM (& 3-5-2)

Highly Structured football started by Conte at his time in Juventus. Bottom Heavy formation so this creates a lot of Counter-Attacking type of football and is sturdy at the back. Due to the having three Center Backs, it's a really good idea to concentrate on having real class talent here especially for the more attacking strategies where you push the wing backs and the defensive midfielder more forward. Can be used by most teams (Relegation Battler, Tactician and Master-Class) once they get used to the formation but the big factor is that in this highly structured shape we have 5 specialized roles. To have adequate cover might be very difficult to achieve, especially for the small clubs.

The team set-up has a very good balance, the Anchor Man sits in front of the 3 man defense and since he doesn't close down much (like some of the other roles) he helps out the central defender that can stand alone due to the DCR and DCL can sit more wide. The Anchor Man doesn't play risky passes which helps spread out the play because in this 5-1-2-2 formation you have plenty of passing options - safety passes back to defense and wide passes to wing backs and the two central midfielders that sit slightly wider. Important that the wing backs can play also on the wings so when you go attacking (or if you go Overload in the last 10 minutes to get back in it) then you can do so easily. Up front you have the False9 and Poacher combo - but you have the option of changing the Poacher into a Target Man (on attack duty) to switch around the game a little. The false nine partners up well with both the Poacher and the Target Man.

Match Preparation: Mostly attacking movement for the Seria A, but in the Champions League would listen much more to the Scout report.

Tactical changes during a match: Mostly the switch in the Attacking Strategy during matches, but usually stay intact with the starting strategy throughout. Usually go Contain in really important matches with slender leads and go Overload if trailing against opposition you should be beating.

The tactic sets follow a certain pattern - so when you decide on a style/type of play, then it follows through even when you go up or down the strategy ladder... Familiarity plays a bigger part in getting your tactics to work than one would think... In this thread I am attempting to show how you can create different styles of football in the game.

I usually don't put up tactics that I haven't tested in one way or another ;)...

I do have a different testing method than the conventional way of seeing if your tactics somehow beats the AI - that's not exactly how I play the game. I check to see how well the in-game strategies are working in conjunction with the descriptions of them. In a way, to see how balanced the ME is and how balanced the tactics work within it.

You see, success is a relative term. It depends on how well one uses the strategies. If you ask if I have success, I would say that I am experienced enough (just had my tenth year anniversary last year on the forums) to do better than worse. If you ask if forum users can have success with the types/styles of strategies created in this thread, then I would say that anyone could easily do so if they understand the concepts of how to use them...

Just added the 4-4-2 KicknRush and the 4-4-2 Eddie Howe to the thread. I wanted to do it earlier but have been travelling the last three days so had no chance. The next tactics I am planning on including is 3-5-2 Juventus type of tactics, maybe with a Conte type 3-4-3 in various forms. Hopefully a few Germanic tactics (4-2-1-3 and a 4-1-3-2) and a couple of Italian (4-3-2-1 and a 4-3-1-2). For sure there is going to be a 4-1-2-3 DM a la Barce and maybe an alternative for lower reputation squads... I got them all in mind but would like to have a little time to get them organized...

NB: I wanted to apologize because it seems I had muddled up the 4-2-3-1_ATTACKING_Direct_Mourinho tactic - after checking it the download link just now, it seems I got the unfinished version of it in the download link. You might want to re-download it so you get the correct settings...

Just wanted to add that I have used tactics based on LL strategy ladder ideas for many years ever since he began posting. I have built many tactics of my own based around the theory  and I can say that without exception  they have always worked and I have always overachieved using these ideas. Give them a go and you will not be disappointed and you will learn a great deal about how the match engine works throughout the process.

I am currently on a career save and began at Sheffield United winning league one with my own tactics (4123 and 4141 sets) based on these ideas and have recently taken the job at Newcastle who have newly been promoted into the premier league following Benitez  moving to Manchester City. I have begun using the Mourinho direct tactics as a regelation battler and I'm currently sitting fourth in the league having two draws (beginning at Old Trafford - tough opener and defefensive set used) four wins and no defeats so far. Early days but I have total confidence in the sets that I will do well over the season. You need to choose the tactics carefully prior to the match and use different mentalities at the right time but thinking along these lines adds realism for me which I enjoy.

Set-Pieces have quite a large effect in the game, it's not only about scoring directly from them - but the 'aftermath' of them is more important than one would think. After toying around with them and using the goalkeeper distribution a part of the tactics, I have made huge progress in making the tactics more influential in terms of success rates - which ultimately have a pretty big impact on match stats. Each of the tactics will include their own set-piece instructions that should compliment each formation/tactic - I have put players into places that should fit the team shape (and player roles). This gives the tactics more 'character' and behaviors that add a whole new element to the game. I must admit, the range in this version of the ME is quite incredible - you can create styles of play that I wasn't (at first) aware of - and in all honesty, find that the game has a 'wow' element... That's for sure...

I decided to follow through and make the different strategies more in sync with the original ideology so they become easier to adjust to when using multiple strategies. Another example is that the KicknRush tactic I have gone for more GoRouteOne (always wanted to make a LongBall tactic that works) - so a little changing around here and there. In short, in my experience, to make tactics work a little better this time around, one should consider set-pieces, goalkeeper distribution and sometimes focus of play to really put a dot on the eye - have a plan. I will be going more into this along the way. There is two inclusions coming in a few days (Juve's 5-1-2-2 DM WB and Barca's 4-1-2-3 DM WIDE) once I have gone through them

Loversleaper has removed the tactics for download, possibly because they are being updated?

Before I start uploading the first tactic set, I would like to point out that I have put quite a lot of work into them. I could do this because this version of FM is by far the best so far - without a doubt. The range that the ME/strategies offer are actually (comparing to earlier versions) pretty incredible, you can really build 'styles' of football - but remembering that there has to be a certain balance in settings, instructions and roles. It's actually not that complicated once you grasp the basics, and looking back at the thread I wrote last year I was pretty spot on with a lot of my assessments (so the descriptions in that thread are still very relevent).

The whole set-piece reality has become much more influential, even though you don't score directly on them. There is a certain 'aftermath' (both attacking and defending) that can sway things one way or the other - so, it is kind of vital to take this part of the game pretty seriously. You don't need to do a lot of work there, but having a plan (however small it is) is highly recommended. That is what I have done this time around and the main reason I wanted to update the tactic sets - every tactic set has a certain game plan in the set-piece department. Some are very simple and some others are a little more advanced. It is very easy to create an idea and implement in your tactics and keeping the, more or less, correct players in the right positions can make the difference - and it also helps avoid players getting really poor ratings (which can come about if the player is in a set-piece situation that doesn't fit his attributes). If you do things correctly in this department, then I would guess that you could make your tactics around 10% - to - 30% more effective (rough guess). Remember also, that in set-pieces your team tends to be bent out of tactical shape - this could be one of the reasons that weaknesses may arise within your formation in the duration of the set-piece action before you manage to get your team back into their positions.

Build up of play is also important when you are creating tactics. Like Goal Keeper distribution can set a base of how you are going to bring the ball forward, which can really compliment a tactic. How you compose the team with that in terms of settings and instructions is very important if you are going to see the full capability of the ME - if you create very incoherent settings within your strategies, then it will look as messy as any of the previous versions. You can assign players specific tasks that actually are more visible in the ME than I can remember, but the thing about specific tasks (like crossing direction) is that I have found that it is wise to use players with very good attributes to make them effective and don't use too many of them either. If you want to experiment in this department then I would take it in steps and try one thing at a time like having your best winger cross in the direction of your best heading striker, for example. This way you can create certain tactical movements in your team, which is kind of cool --- although I rarely use them...

Last thing before I get started, is that it is very important to understand the Familiarity aspect with tactics. It can take a while before they work like they should and some things are just harder to adjust to. Like the Attacking Strategies, they usually take longer to adjust to and the match stats (and things going on in the ME) can discourage your view on the Strategy. Expect the Attacking strategy to initially struggle and your team might be the victim of a team that is really Counter-Attacking effectively, but in my opinion you must push on (given that it is the correct strategy play for that game in hand) because usually you get the result even though it was a tough ride. Once the AI realizes that you are a competent manager and you are getting the results, they will start changing their strategy game play against your team - that is why it is important to carry on pushing Attacking if you are going to break down those stubborn tactical teams on your home ground (Master-Class home tactics and/or being very large home favorites). Give things a chance and don't panic - usually if you are good at choosing good strategies for your next opponent you should do better than worse. Don't change too quickly and notice how your tactics work over a longer periode of time, keep an eye on your opponents generally (are they Relegation Battlers, Master Class or something in between) and where you struggle - remember, it is not all about one match...

I always wanted to make a Long Ball (English Kick and Rush) style of football that was effective. Simple for most teams to use and adapt to, especially in the Lower Leagues. I use GoRouteOne with Pass into Space for two reasons: one is to avoid the team just booting the ball constantly to the Target Man and two is that you can actually create quite good football at times. A recommended team is Barnet (as in the Screen Shots) because they have a perfect team to start with and a few good buys here and there should create a scenery where you can actually win the league first season even though you are tipped to 23rd spot (relegation battler). Big strong Target men is a must together with speed on the wings and off you go.

To start out with, I would go with Control (home tactics or when you are huge away favorites) - Standard (for large home underdogs and slight away favorites) - and Defensive (almost all away games where you are underdogs). I train these three and familiarize my team with them as fast as possible, plus they cover quite a lot of ground so if I do change to the other starting strategies (Attacking and Counter), then it won't be too big a leap. During the season, especially if you vastly overachieve, you might want to move up a notch with the strategies so that you are using Attacking for home matches and Counter for your away matches (as slight underdogs naturally) - but this craves good result form and a certain tactical awareness in regards to reading your opponents (where they are in the league, result form and what you think you can use to get the most out of the matches).

These tactics are usually very effective because your team keeps going for it and will keep trying until you poke a hole in the opposition. Creates a lot of Ding-Dong battles where you most likely will be on the edge of your seat until the end of the game - but these are the nature of the tactics. You always have a window back into matches because of the drive, and remember to use the Contain and the Overload in the last minutes of the match if you really want to grab those vital points for the league or go on to the next rounds in the cups.

These tactics have a very primitive game plan by bombing balls up the pitch and if you have a great Target Man then the opposition will always have a hard time dealing with your team regardless of what they do to try and stop you. Even though it is a primitive game plan (one must crawl before one walks) - it is still a gameplan... Something that most tactics need to become effective ;)

Sorry that I have to take a step at a time to put up the tactics, but time is a commodity that I have very little of atm.

This next tactic is how I generally would perceive how a Manager like Eddie Howe would play the game. Relatively simple so teams can adjust quite easily to the settings and at the same time creates a passing type of football - especially if you bring in talented technical players. The strike force is quite important, the F9 and the Poacher kind of reminds me of the time Man U had Cole and Yorke. This striker pair reacts quite well with the type of football you are going to play with these tactics.

A team like Bournemouth is a Tactician team, and with more depth can get into a European Cup spot. The tactics can be quite daring for a Relegation Battler, but having said that, if you have the right players you should be able to do quite well. These tactics suit Tactician managers that want to keep the Team structurally intact all the way through so if and when you want to move up or down the Mentality ladder you always keep your team's positional shape. I found it hard to find a good set-piece set up due to the lack of height within the squad, but finally did manage to create something that complimented this type of team.

To play like a Tactician with these tactics in a team like Bournemouth, then this is how I basically play the game: at the start of the game, naturally you are going to be facing familiarity problems, opposition managers not quite 'respecting' your managerial skills yet and other small issues (like lack of result form) causing this periode to be quite difficult to tackle - so I play more 'safe' mentality-wise. So away from home I will start out playing Defensive as an underdog until my team starts getting result form. I will carry on playing Defensive as Large Underdog regardless throughout the season (but with good result form it will become more and more rare). I start playing Counter a little into the season as slight underdog away from home once I can see my team reacting well with the tactics and the result form is pretty good. If my team starts getting into the slight favorite role away, then I will start using Standard for these matches and if my team become huge favorites then I will move up to Control for those matches - but usually this takes time and really good result form to get into these situations.

At home it's more relatively simple to deal with. In the rare occasion where I do find my team large underdog at home - like when playing Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City (world class opposition) as examples in the beginning of the seasons, then I will play more 'safe' and go with the Standard to see where I stand - later I might move up to Control if my result form is good and my team is more considered slight underdog at home, these can be tough choices and it's part of the learning process. Otherwise I would generally be playing Control at home most of the time (slight underdog or slight favorite - in other words, close odds). If I do notice that the opposition starts to play Defensive against me (time wasting is the key here, especially the opposition Goal Keepers behavior with the ball) then I start gearing up to play Attacking strategy - well aware that my team will initially struggle match-stat-wise until the team feels more comfortable with the more extreme settings. Familiarity and the AI tactical behavior plays a part here - there will be a time where the opponents will defend very deep, high time waste on your home ground and try to frustrate your team and pass the ball around below your team's Closing Down settings. This is my 'theory' why tactics can eventually "dry up", and looking at this case in this way, then Control at home might not offer the settings that actually can break down this type of strategic opponent (Control works well against Counter Attacking teams due to duties and settings as explained in the strategy descriptions). That spells soon time for my team to move up from the Tactician role to the more Master-Class role. Any team with consistent good result form will eventually reach the Master-Class style of playing, as long as one knows how to tackle these 'transition phases', then you can always battle the AI opponent using the strategy ladder - it might take a little practice though...

Also howe tactics are same in standard and counter

They have the same team tactical instructions, but Standard and Counter behave different on the pitch. Standard creates more of a battle in the center of the field, where on the other hand Counter means you will be sitting further down to soak up attacks and counter. We can't see all the settings that are in the Strategies, but I assure you that they do differ from one and other. Plus, in the Counter I used a little different player instructions in a bid to try and instigate more counter attack possibilities. Keeping the style of football throughout the sets as much as possible so that teams can easily adjust when changes are made because the changes won't be too big a leap. So, if you start out as a Tactician type of manager (Control - Standard - Defensive) then moving to the Master-Class (Attack - Control - Counter) will be an easy step.

I think he means what you have uploaded as Standard/Counter are actually exactly the same. I can see by the download description it includes the words "standard" under the Counter

Looking forward to using the Howe set

How long until the Wenger/Arsenal set is uploaded? I am still having some joy with the previous one, will the new one have much changes?

Aha... Sorry, I can see now that I did make that mistake and will fix it now --- it was late last night and I was tired so made the error with my eyes half shut :D.

Yes, to the changes in the sets --- as mentioned, set-pieces and goal keeper distribution should compliment the tactics more (plus a few adjustments to the team settings). The first ones should work but the new ones should work a bit better because they should be more of a 'finished article'. To make tactics more coherent, these other aspects really do add to the success rate of them. I hope when I get home from work later today I will be able to put up at least one of the sets - which will probably be the Mourinho... Fingers crossed...
