veerus
Hi SI folks, hoping you can clear this up for me. 1. When would you use the Wide Midfielder role? As opposed to say, a winger? 2. If both positions are "green", what's the functional difference between using Advanced Playmaker or Deep Lying Forward? How do they compare to the Trequarista? Hodgy
A winger is more of an attacking threat than a wide midfielder, a winger will look to get the ball and run with it before whipping in crosses and focuses more on influencing the attacking side of the game whereas a wide midfielder would have a better balance with his attacking mentality and would probably be less of a runner and dribbler and more technically gifted, some examples of typical wingers are Sterling, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Navas, Giggs in his younger days whereas wide midfielders are more like Beckham, Shaquiri and I suppose Juan Mata (when he is used wide is a wide midfielder rather than winger)... SI Staff Jack Joyce Posted November 25, 2016 SI Staff Share Posted November 25, 2016 As Hodgy said, wide midfielders give more of a balance between attack and defence. They're generally a CM that can play out wide when needed (seen a lot more in the lower leagues than the top leagues), hard to think of any recent top-level examples, maybe Milner when he's used at RM. Advanced playmakers tend to be more creative midfield players e.g. Ozil, Fabregas but a deep-lying forward will drop deep to hold up the ball (usually with their back to goal). Trequartista's have a lot more freedom and creative license and is a specialist role.
