What is your club finances like?

@john1 These are the club finances:

As you will see, things are looking pretty healthy. This is in spite of my owners though who haven't invested anything into the club. I've just had to oversee a selling spree to be able to make any signings this summer - I'll write about that in more detail shortly!

Season 9 - Interim Update

Having won the Premier League, there is little more to achieve with Hull, therefore l I am undecided whether to continue with this career. That said, I have decided to write an interim update for season 9, as I knew as a minimum I wanted to compete for the Community Shield and the European Super Cup.

597f8f56e150a_Transfers1.thumb.png.2cfa55c6c0d8cc28c3af394207f4caec.png597f8f58e728b_Transfers2.thumb.png.cbba49a1acc79db0bbd9ba72485e0720.png

Season 9 commenced and I expected to be rewarded with a healthy transfer budget having just won the League and Europa League, however I was surprised to receive a budget of just £5m, with the expectation of qualifying for the Champions League. The last post I did which shows the clubs finances states that my 'original transfer budget was £18.44m', which is strange, as it is simply not true. The board only allowed me to retain 25% of transfer revenue, so as you can see I have had to make £149m worth of player sales to be able to finance £44.5m worth of purchases. After the transfer window closed the board announced I could now keep 100% of transfer revenue, after good budget management.

Strikers Crivelli and Moreno were strikers I rated and who had done well for me when called upon, but they were unhappy about a lack of game time so I let them go. Likewise Memphis and Bittencourt were getting minimal game time so I let them go in search of playing time. Vitor Bueno had grew tired of the impossible task, trying to displace Odegaard, so I also sold him. Due to my limited budget, I had to revert to my wheeler-dealer free agent specialist role which characterized my early tenure at the club. I signed experienced strikers Gabbiadini and Lukaku as my replacement forwards, and they were happy to take rotation and backup roles respectively. Talented young winger (4*) Hervieu was signed to replace my departing wide-men. Finally young AM Ramsden from Spurs was signed as the new back up to Odegaard. Former club captain Ajer was available at a cut price after failing at Man Utd and the sentimental side of me made me sign him, despite not really needing a 5th CM.

The shock of the summer was when Barcelona bid £60m for Hélio and the board accepted this over my head. This was very frustrating as I was not left with the finances to sign a replacement of similar profile. The only way I was able to replace Hélio with another 4* player was to look for someone much older. I brought in experienced Koke as a short-term, but quality, replacement. Navas retired a season early leaving me in a tricky position, I opted to sign an average player in Moreira (formerly of Atletico Madrid) in the hope that Lafont can stay fit all season. Rashford is a player I really like, but upon his return from Empoli I was aware I just did not need 5 strikers so I decided to cash in. I also sold Rafa Silva to free up further cash. These final sales gave me the funds to be able to sign young, English, transfer listed players Sancho and Onomah. I tried to loan out Ramsden at the end of the window having now signed a better AM in Onomah, but he turned down loans at Leeds and Brighton, probably to the detriment of his long-term career. I now have 12 English-born players in my 25 man squad.

Community.png.d9a43d8064409eb687265ab25a11d4ae.png

The first trophy we contested of the season was the Community Shield, which unfortunately we lost. It was a fairly dull and even game, eventually settled by a direct free-kick from Felipe Anderson. Unfortunately Odegaard picked up an injury in pre-season that would keep him out for 4 weeks - he could have been the difference.

597f8f553331f_SuperCup.png.63f5b75e426e07672dd6fa4300bc7731.png

We did however win our second European trophy, beating league rivals Man City to lift the European Super Cup. Iheanacho was magnificent, scoring a hat-trick to win the game. Winger Nelson also starred, picking up two assists.

Well I finished my season on good form, coming 3rd in the end and walking the playoffs.

You can see on the league table graph where I took over by where I had the cursor when I took the screengrab.

Abel Hernandez was amazing for me and managed to win the top goal scorer, top assister, and top player awards. Especially impressive as he only had 3 goals when I took over, having the extra 3 games in the playoffs was just enough for him to win it ahead of Leigh Griffiths of Villa.

Going up to the Prem was a target for me, but I expected to fall short if I'm honest, I was hoping to sneak the playoffs and pray for luck to go up. In the end I was pushing for automatic promotion, then had an easy time of the playoffs, 2nd place was 5 points ahead and top spot was 6 points above me. Sounds like quite a lot, but it felt really close to me.

Aside from Hernandez I was impressed with Tymon, Maguire, Will Keane, and Mendy. Interestingly 4 of those 5 start at Hull (correct me if I am wrong about Will Keane) I believe all these guys will play a big role in the Prem next season.

My Best XI as decided by the computer is as follows:

Mannion

Ben Sheaf (loan from Arsenal), Maguire, Tymon, Gil.

Skhiri, Mendy, Mason (newgen, loan from Arsenal)

Lawrence, Hernandez, W.Keane.

I brought in Marlon Moreno and Fabian Delph in the January window, but it would seem they didn't get enough time to make the best XI.

I expect I will need to find some bargains in the transfer market to have any success in the Prem, but after 4 seasons I am expecting there should be a good selection of players that are out of contract or rotting in bigger teams reserves I can call on. I usually like to build for the future, but this close season I'll be looking for immediate impact players in the main.

Hopefully will complete the season in the next couple of days and will update.

Hey guys,

How does Will Mannion develop in game for Hull? I am thinking of getting a keeper, and he is on my shortlist. Seeing if he is a good long term option to go after. Thanks!

Southgates eyeing him up for the England team in my game, he's my first choice keeper and we're in the prem in season 5 at the moment.

That said, for some reason he's only worth £850k!

@inthisspace This is what Mannion looks like on my save after 8.5 seasons:

I loaned him out for several seasons but he never really improved to the level I wanted to I ended up selling him in 2022/23. As you can see he is playing for Burnley, who are 11th in the Championship. He'd probably be better rated if I had given him regular Premier League playing time, but I could not take the risk at the time.

@Dong21,

Thanks! He looks like a pretty solid mid-table to lower premier league keeper IMO. Seems like he is fairly inconsistent, judging from the average ratings. Or Burnley is just plan lousy haha.

Started a file in December and saw this Hull side needing some leadership. I've taken them from 15th to a good position the in the league so far with the hope of getting either 5th or 6th.

Slightly frustrated that I didn;t start from the start of the season, but this has been good fun! Post season signings will be crucial and hold onto some of my boys who are performing.

Any suggestions or advice is welcome :)

End of season update, we finished 6th in the end, disappointed to have not finished 5th but it was too far to reach in the end. Happy that we got Europe though :)

Good first season @Raymubdo21 - what does your squad look like and what budget have you got? If you've got tight owners like I had/have then I recommend utilising the free agent and loan markets to the max!

@Dong21 I was given just over £50 million to spend. Which sounds good, but wage structure and getting the right players is always a challenge!

Season 9 - Champions of Europe

599de8abd9b24_CLWin.thumb.png.e262eb1008ad319af09d9f3cd3d28ff5.png

I am delighted to report that I have managed to make Hull City the European champions in my ninth season at the club.

599de677d092e_CLGroup.thumb.png.2e52c6f30501b7c0b3037b16a42bd6ff.png

We began our Champions League campaign by winning our group that featured Real Madrid, with our key victory being against Los Merengues.

599de685b6d42_GroupWin.png.c40eaa5699ca959d682f4194ba7d8371.png

In my interim season 9 review, written when I was unsure whether I was going to continue with this career, I outlined the vast number of transfers I made in the summer transfer window. The only January transfer window signings were as follows:

In

In.thumb.png.ab4a157d0657fd73d5877a7d3270cbee.png

Out

Out.thumb.png.3395b9629de1f0acbde800bfadfd5dd1.png

In the First Knockout round we were drawn against Borussia Dortmund who we beat 2-0 away and drew 0-0 at home with.

Dortmund.thumb.png.b7cbdef12ed53f71a5c08a8a791bfd76.png

We played Real Madrid in the Quarter Finals, a team who I have had great success against throughout this career, and we achieved the greatest standalone result of my managerial career; a 6-1 win. To provide context to this result, it is worth noting that Real Madrid won La Liga with 97 points this season. As the result was secured I played an entirely changed eleven in the return leg and had a slight scare as we lost 4-1, meaning the aggregate score was a 7-5 win.

Madrid.png

The Semi Finals pitted us against league rivals Man Utd, who we triumphed over 3-0 on aggregate after two hard fought games.

United.png.e4ddaba735301b00f7b9b755ed998484.png

The Final, which saw us crowned champions of Europe, was against European powerhouses Juventus. The star of the Final was Gabriel Jesus, my January signing from Tigres, who's goals from the wing twice put us in the lead. Both times we lead we were pegged back by our opposition, which resulted in the game being taken to penalties. The penalty shootout hero was my goalkeeper Lafont who saved all three of their penalties! I was delighted that the winning penalty was scored by Kerenton Santos, who had spent 3 months of the season injured and then had been on a lengthy barren run ever since his return. Odegaard and Manolas were both named in the European Dream Team.

Season 9 Continued

Unfortunately I was not able to complete the double and retain the Premier League to accompany the Champions League, finishing three points behind Chelsea.League.thumb.png.999c4e75450b1d1f0d53e24657fad38a.png

We lost as many games as we did in our title winning season and also had almost the same goal difference, however where we differed was an increased number of draws. One of the factors in our decreased performance was that this season I priortised trying to win the Champions League and sometimes played a weakened team in the league.

An enjoyable thing to note (unless you're a Liverpool fan!) is that Liverpool got relegated from the relegation zone!

599def539868c_LeaguePositions.thumb.png.d396b5f344cea073608a9cf9b33d8266.png

The above past positions chart shows that we sat in 1st position for several of the final weeks, but unfortunately we couldn't hold on. The defining result was a 1-0 league defeat by Man Utd in the third from final game of the season, with the fixture falling in between home and away CL Semi Final legs against the same club.

Spurs.png.54db9b216186802f19bc584f897b0aff.pngArsenal.png.f303cc16b61966b4b5b7dcbe5eb06e03.png

Above are two of the best results of our league season, with the result against Arsenal falling on the last day of the season.

Awards.thumb.png.048c02275794b6a90422a27517d11cee.png

We continued to utilise the 4-2-3-1 formation that has seen us great success in previous seasons. Above is the strongest line-up I had in the first half of the season. The only change in the second half of the season was the introduction of Gabriel Jesus who replaced Nelson and contributed 7 goals, 4 assists and an average match rating of 7.44.

The player who featured the most was Lafont who played 50 times, making a huge contribution. My top goalscorer was Iheanacho who scored 23 goals, also creating 9 assists. The surprise revelation of the season was Lukaku who I signed as my fourth choice striker, on a backup role contract. After injuries to Santos and Gabbiadini, Lukaku got a game, scored and so I kept him in the team for a prolonged spell. Lukaku scored an impressive 19 goals from only 16 starts. Winger Hervieu had a terrific first season for me and was my top assistor with 19 assists. Nelson also deserves credit for his 10 assists.

My key men Odegaard and Kimpembe both performed very strongly again. Odegaard returned 13 goals and 10 assists and Kimpembe got the second highest average match rating in my squad (7.38). The more creative players got the headlines, however Taylor, Manolas, Koke, Grujic and Buisson also had very good seasons.

Thanks @nextqprmanager! I think this is my greatest achievement in all my years of playing FM!

I don't remember having any WP issues with Grujic when I signed him, I guess it is all dependent on how regularly he is playing for his national team at the time, and how well they are ranked in the world rankings.

Yes in my first team Hervieu and Buisson are the only regens. I'll share some screenshots of my squad in my next post

Season 10 - The Final Chapter

With the demo of FM18 fast approaching release I thought I would tie off loose ends and complete my tenth season managing Hull. In all my years of playing FM I have never taken a career this far and it has been highly enjoyable.

59f0ba7d175dc_Transfers1.thumb.png.7e10bf832b57f14f1270dd9e531adc05.png

59f0ba7eb7a9d_Transfers2.thumb.png.6a5ca3f2b0bf0ca88db47cbabd0388da.png59f0ba80bf013_Transfers3.thumb.png.485a8ff4299afb563ba6f07dd678e7d0.png

In an effort to revitalise my squad I signed four high potential young players: Krejci (RW), Otsuka (CB), Taylor (CM) and Peters (LW), all of whom were aged 24 or younger. This allowed me to move on players such as Barkley, Sterling and Gabbiadini. Ramsden was a high potential player I signed last season on a free, I wanted to keep him and develop him, but when a bid of £30.5m came in for a player who only made one substitute appearance the season prior, I couldn't resist selling. Manolas had a terrific season but at the age of 34, I decided to cash in on the interest in him and sell him to Juventus. My big signing of the summer was spending a club record £53m for 20 year old CB Juan Paez, who my staff rated as the best player at the club. This seems like a large sum, but is fairly relative for a title challenging side in 2025. My second major signing was Eric Dier to be my first choice BWM, with the added benefit of cover in defence if required. Besides some loan additions, my final summer signing was Butland as my new back up 'keeper - this had the dual benefit of providing me a quality back up and weakening Stoke who had been a challenger in recent seasons. Finally, I could not resist a large £32.5m bid for backup winger Sancho, especially as I had signed Krejci and Peters.

In December, Charlie Taylor, a magnificent servant at LB over the years insisted I sell him to Toronto for "one big final pay day".  I therefore had to invest big in a quality LB, Leoncio of Benfica.

59f0ba744a87f_EuropeanSuperCup.png.c51bc0579e66109eda2879bb805f0b48.png

I began the season in style with an enjoyable drubbing of Napoli to lift the European Super Cup. We then went on to win the Club World Cup, beating Corinthians 3-1 in the Final (see screenshots in previous post).

Table.thumb.png.d1c97ef081badcdf04056782674f56fe.pngFormation.thumb.png.37bbdc62ddd59ff38d122d3c6aa84805.png

Not our best league standing in recent seasons, but a respectable 3rd place finish. The standout player this season was Iheanacho who scored 39 goals and got 7 assists in all competition. This was the most significant scoring contribution from an individual player in my 10 years of managing Hull. Odegaard returned 9 goals and 7 assists this season, which is a great season by most standards, however this felt like a quiet season for a player who provided more in recent years. Santos (13 goals, 4 assists), Nelson (9 goals, 15 assists) and Herviou (7 goals, 13 assists) were also key attacking contributors. After Iheanacho, the next highest average rated player was Kimpembe, a stalwart of my sides. His defensive colleagues Paez, Buisson and Leonico were also very highly rated.

59f0bbb2c0615_CLGroup.thumb.png.be8bd3438c50917a1ca340e6329e654e.png

We were joined by our European Super Cup opponents Napoli in our Champions League group. We won the group, with the highlights of the group stage being a pair of 3-0 home wins against Napoli and Besitkas.

59f0ba736c94c_CLSchalke.png.9d371c5e1c26989426f91dc4c457f711.png

We faced Schalke in the Champions League 1st Knockout round and this saw one of the craziest games in my managerial tenure, as I beat them 5-4 in the first leg. We then lost 2-1 in the return, making the tie 6-6 and we progressed on away goals.

59f0ba711fa0e_CLJuve.png.7c104c224b56c8395dca54e61738e7e4.png59f0ba724ab95_CLPSG.thumb.png.fa520e90bcc2716314505d7cddca4e2b.png

Then we faced Juventus in the Quarter Finals and beat them 5-1 on aggregate. Sadly our Champions League campaign ended at the Semi Final stage after a humbling 4-0 defeat to PSG saw us lost 4-1 on aggregate. This result was made worse by the fact that they had a man sent off and we also missed a penalty. PSG went on to win the Champions League. Kimpembe was named in the European team of the season.

The season did end well though, as we lifted the FA Cup, the one trophy that had eluded me to that point as Hull manager.

Our run to the Final saw us thrash Chelsea in the Quarter Finals, helped along by two own goals, and a convincing 3-1 winagainst league champions Man Utd.

59f0ba754967d_FACupFinal.png.66370e22622a80b097c285d03fe52f4f.png

The Final was an eventful game and a great way to end my Hull career.

I signed every one of these players, however I am particularly pleased with the players who went on to make over 150 appearances for my side: Lafont, Chambers, Kimpembe, Taylor, Grujic, Odegaard and Iheanacho.

I doubt I will record my managerial careers on here for FM18, as the Forum seems completely dead... It was fun whilst it lasted though!

@Dong21,

Please continue to pen your career updates in this forum. It is helpful for persons like me to read through how others cope with similar clubs. I have picked up a lot of tips and details on this forum just by reading through the various threads.

I must say that it is an impressive team you built out there. Made all the more impressive that, unlike many others, the best XI are actually real players 10 years in. I can say you somehow manage like Inzaghi at Lazio, giving the players who have lost their way a new path forward. So kudos for building such a strong team!
