After starting off with a challenge to myself to only sign people names John for St Johnstone, I drifted away from FM for months, before going back to the John challenge. It took the limits of that second challenge to get me really into the game. I've been excited about FM17, however, for months, and I'm hoping the confines of this game will keep me amused and in the game... So join us, will you, for The Gospel According to St. Pauli. The Premise: Much like John Johnston, this will be a name-based challenge. Jesus o'Nazareth will be the manager of Hamburg St. Pauli and be limited in signing players who's first or sur-names include some iteration of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John or Paul. As these are some of the most common names in Europe, it hould limit me but not enormously badly - and the adddition of managing in a top tier country should provide at least some excitedment. Our manager, Jesus o'Nazareth, has also let the press know that any youth products will also be renamed one of Matthew, Mark, Luk, John or Paul, just to make things a little fun. Further stipulations are that, as opposed to St. Johnstone where I ended up playing the likes of David Wotherspoon and Chris Kane for years, as they had started with the club, I must actively try and sell any original player not named Matthew, Mark, Luke, John or Paul over the first four years. The Setup: Obviously I will be managing St. Pauli, in the 1. Bundesliga, the second division of Germany. Major leagues are loaded, as well as neighbouring countries, Turkey, and Brazil/Argentina/Australia/China/USA all on view-only to try and simulate some big momney moves. Jesus o'Nazareth is an Israeli/Irishman, a National B license holder, a former semi-professional goalkeeper (Jesus saves!). St. Pauli... are alright. Predicted tenth, not a bad squad... Awway we go! Moonshine Posted October 25, 2016 Author Share Posted October 25, 2016 FC St. Pauli Hamburg 2016/17 Info Formed in 1910, St Pauli are a 'kult' club in Germany. Successes on the field have been negligable - the club have spent only eight seasons in their 116 year history in the Bundesliga, and have never won a major trophy - and yet they are widely respected across Germany for the passion of their fans and their left-wing political leaning. They were the first club in Euerope to officially ban right-wing displays at their ground in 1981, and had effectively stamped out home-fan hooliganism by the mid 80s. Near bankrupt in the mid-2000s, popular groundswell saved the club, and the now languish as a mid-table 2-Bundesliga side. The Milerntor-Stadion, in the heart of the city's red light district, holds 29,546 (with just over 12,000 seated) and the clfub have rivalries with Hansa Rostock, Hamburger FC and, to a lesser extent, VFB Lubeck and Altona 93 (not, hopefully, that we'll see them this sav as they languish in the Regionalia) The tam has a few home grown players, and a couple of followers of the Gospel on their books already. Those home-grown have been re-baptised 'Pauli' and will hopefully help serve the spine of the team for years to come. A selection: Jan-Philipp Kalla is a pretty decent DL, and can do a job at AML if we're short Marc Hornshuh will be my first choice DC - and he looks excellent for this level. Stefan 'Pauli' Rakocevic looks like he might develop into something a bit special. Homegrown GK, wanted by Eintracht Frankfurt, Koln and Werder Bremen, I've handed him a new conract and will be slowly pushing him into the first team. That said, Svend 'Pauli' Brodersen is currently the better goalkeeper. A couple of years older, the two of them will be competing long into their 20s I've no doubt. It’s a good squad, of that there is no doubt, with some excellent players. We are likely to play a 4-2-3-1 with marauding wing backs, and hope for the best. Pre-Season Expectations: Media: 10th Bookies: 350-1 Board: Mid-Table DFB-Pokal: Second Round Transfers: As I found in the St Johnstone game last year, the first year is usually poor for transfers as I build up my network of named players over the season. My signings, though, were quite noteworthy. Importantly, and congratulations to all those who guessed (in their heads, if not on the page) we signed the mighty former Barcelona, Chelsea and Bolton forward, Eidur Gudjohnsen – 37 years old, on the edge of the first team, but a hell of a player mentally, he will bring good experience into the team and keep us on the straight and narrow as we settle into this first season. Two other signings made the grade – Yann Bodgier, on loan from Toulouse, shored up what was the only position we lacked depth in, Defensive midfield; meanwhile Matti Fielder joined on a free, and was immediately plonked in the St Pauli II team as a young, backup DC. Moonshine Posted November 7, 2016 Author Share Posted November 7, 2016 FC St. Pauli Hamburg 2016/17 August – October We started our first season realtively well, playing my favoured 4-2-3-1 (DMs) which I struggled with in FM16 (I eventually ended up playing with MCs instead of DM). Throughout preseason we had been playing with Marvin Duksch as a target man, with either Gudjohnsen or Dudziak behind him, but an early losss to Nurnberg and draw with Heidenheim saw me adjust for the pace in my team. Ryo Myaichi in particular is spectacularly fast, and in order to utilise that pace I moved Aziz Bouhaddouzz into the middle in as Advanced Forward role, and started playing a bit more direct. The results really worked, with Bouhaddouz scoring for fun (ten goals in ten starts, with three appearances from the bench), as well as the whole team attacking beautifully. All that meant that we sit 2nd (!) come November – having hammered Hannover, Bochum and 1860 Munich along the way. Our inability to keep a clean sheet is concerning, particularly as we’re playing with 2 DMs (both of whom love to get booked) but as long as we keep scoring one more than them I’ll be thrilled… DFB-Pokal In the cup we fared much worse – a boring 1-0 loss to Wurzburg Kickers was miserable. And, finally, our Junior Coaching was increased. The club is pretty wealthy (though losing around £100k a monh) and I thought I'd ask them to spend wisely... I loved the idea behind the previous save, (did you see one of my Youth Intake was called Jón Jónsson?). Here, I'm linked to £1m+ players, and hell, Ryo Myaichi is worth £5m - allowing myself to buy across all those names gives me at least some chance of making it against the Bundesliga teams... Ballon d'Or and World Player of the Year In a turn up for the books, neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo won either best player of the year award. In fact, neither even made the team of the year. Instead, Mesut Ozil swept the awards, while Suarez, Messi and James Rodriguez the runners up... Apostles: There were three apostles in the World Team of the Year for 2016 - Paulo Dybala, Marcelo and Gianluigi Buffon - after ome googling I discovered that Marcel, Marcus and Mark are all dervied from 'Mars' (hence Mark Anthony and Marcus Aurelius) The current crop of top Apostles are below. Yann Bodiger, on loan from Toulouse, is not only an Apostle, but has been consistently my best defensive player this season (despite three red cards). 4-5 months rules him out for the season. For some reason there's no way of canceling his loan, which is a pain, and it must be a bug that my physio can get him better quicker than a specialist... Moonshine Posted November 14, 2016 Author Share Posted November 14, 2016 FC St. Pauli Hamburg 2016/17 November - February After a stunning first third of the season, the second third has seen been back to earth with a bang. Prior to the winter break, we were free scoring, free wheeling, even in defeat - Aziz Bouhaddouz the top scorer in the league, Ryo Myaichi third and Choi Kyoung-Rok with the most assists. Post Winter-break, we haven't scored a goal. I mean at least I managed to solve the defensive frailties, and the ampunt of red cards I was getting (Yann Bodiger, above, in particular had three red card in eighteen games. Now he's injured, which isn't great for my defensive stability). Thankfully, our form at the start of the season means we are a happy sixth, still in spitting distance of the playoffs. If I can manage to defend well (1s and 2s aren't all that bad, and in particular the amount of goals in the last minutes is concerning) and recapture my attacking threat from the first half of the season, then we might just make it - far too early, to be frank, but it would be nice. In reality, I think I'm going to settle for a happy top half position - sixth is the right place for this club, at this time. We continue to haemhorrage money, however - up to a million a month at times. There was also an awful lot of interest in Stefan 'Pauli' Rakocevic over the January transfer window - Werder Bremen and Koln both put in bids of £850,000 for him, and he continues to enormously improve. My current backup GK is Fairly Professional, to Stefan's Balanced, too, and I'm trying to tutor some professionalism into him... which seems to have worked as he used to be Casual. Here he is in all his glory: Youth update to come as we kick into the business end of the season. I've played 3 of the top 5 already, so only two of 10 are really difficult... And this first year was pretty lovely to me. Would you look at that? Not just the one but both the best players in the intake coming through with professional personalities, and looking rather sexy to boot. Rachid 'Matthew A' Coulibaly is a proper, old school winger. Absolutely rapid, hugging the line, enormously left footed, he has the potential to be the future of the AML slot in the team - as good, if not better, than my best player, Ryo Myaichi. Roland 'Matthew B' Dober is a technical athlete - great stamina for his age, and decent technique for a young winger too. His determination, and professional personality, should see him rapidly progress. Needs to work on his crossing and dribbling to be a true threat, but with the right framework... Niclas 'Matthew C' Behrendt is not quite the finished deal. Great finishing ability and an excellent first touch, with decent pace, may make him a good poacher in the future, but I hold no high hopes for his lin up play going forward. I'm not enormously hopeful ofn his prospects, but we'll see. He does, however, have great hair. You'll not be surprised that the casual and slack players aren't staying. You also won't be seeing any of these guys for the first couple of seasons, due to Germany's strict u-17 rules. In fact, you won't see poor Roland 'Matthew B' Dober until 2020/21, three seasons away, as he doesn't turn 17 until 2019.... Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

From promotion challengers, we can't get a win for love nor money. I faffed about with formations, made wholesale changes, but it might simply be that the defence has no structure without Bodiger to protect them. It's awful. In the end, we went 14 games without a win, ammassing only five points. Toward the end of the season we experimented with a 4-4-2 that seemed to get our scoring mojo back, but was so leaky at the back it beggared belief - hence 4-4, 2-3 and 2-6. One of the major problems was a lack of goal threat without Aziz Bouhaddouz - he was on fire in the first half of the season, and in the second he couldn't hit the backside of a donkey with a banjo. So, targets for next season are a DM and a backup ST, and maybe, just maybe, some kind of defense that works. We'll see. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Squad Awards (God knows why Matti Fielder is on there as best signing. He was signed as a backup/youth prospect, played a grand total of zero games for the first team and just for the St Pauli II. As such, in came seven players for £3.7m - sux of whom will be in and around the first team, and one, Matthias Fixelles, will be a backup. Yann Bodiger, you'll see, has been signed permanently, alongside a new 1st/2nd choice ST in Marko Mrkic, DR in Stolarski, DL in Bozovic and DM in Amos. Sabak, on loan from Genk, is an 18 year old AMC who looks like he might one day be astonishing. A long term goal to sign. Out went some of last season's weaker players, and a whole bunch of loanees. Some decent monet for them, and all. Luke Amos Matthias Fixelles Yann Bodiger Luka Bozovic Marko Mrkic Pawel Stolarski Paolo Sabak Fixtures: Some very good friendlies, including draws with Werder Bremen and Bayern and a victory against Galatasaray. A couple of wins and then a period of 8 games without one, before another win and then... Eugh. I fear it's my tactic, which produced so many chances in the first half of last season and now seems to be failing me just when I need it to work. The end result is a dull lower-mid-table, and not the upper echelons I felt might be my die this season. DFB-Pokal We looked alright in the cup... A 1-0 win over a team from the division below was followed by a credible 1-0 loss to Bundesliga Werder Bremen We also saw improvements to both our Youth Facilities and Training Facilities within the next two seasons... Ballon d'Or and World Player of the Year After neither Messi nor Ronaldo won last year, it was back to usual with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Paul Pogba occupying 1st, 2nd and 3rd in both the Balllon d'Or and World Player of the Year, respectively. Apostles: Marcelo and Dybala remain in the World Team of the Year this season, while Gianluigi Buffon has retired. Replacing him are Juan Mata and Paul Pogba, who make a healthy 20% or so of the best players in the world Apostles. Moonshine Posted December 3, 2016 Author Share Posted December 3, 2016 FC St. Pauli Hamburg 2017/18 November - February It's a much better second half of the season, if I'm honest, but without the ability to transform draws into wins until the end of this period and a reversion from 4-1-2-2-1 to a more straightforward 4-2-3-1. The three 2-2 draws stand out - a 91st minutes Bielfeld penalty, and 90th minute Dresden equaliser and a 78th minute, 10-man, Kaiserslauten equaliser. In general we're OK-ish - we're back to scoring with Ryo Myaichi ( who suffered a broken foot) returning from injury in February and Bouhadouz learning where the net is again, but it is - and remians - worrying with these late goals conceded. Only wins against ten men in Frankfurt and, impressively, third-place Herthe are keeping us out of the relegation playouts Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Oumar 'Mark A' Fofana is a forward who can't finish. I had been playing with a Defensive Forward in one of my formations (which I've never done before) to account for the gradual slowdown of Bouhadouz, and I'm not sure if that's affected Fofana's coming through... But anyway, he's a bit awkward, may eventually make it as a target man, but I really need to focuse on that finishing. Selim 'Mark B' Kyamil is much more well rounded. He can cross, he can dribble, he can defend. He's a little on the slow side at the moment, but we can work on that, but as a Wing Back (which I play with) he could be great in future - plus he's professional to boot. Roman 'Mark C' Artmann is another goalie. I have two young 'Pauli' goalies (i.e. already in the squad when I started the game, and came from the youth team originally) and I'm not sure he'll be as good as them, but his handling isn't bad and nor are his reflexes so he'll be a decent backup. Goalkeeper isn't something I'll worry about for a while. Again, the silly German youth rules will mean you won't see these guys for two seasons. Boooo. Those four draws, too, annoying as they were, were instrumental in keeping me above Frankfurt. 15th isn't good enough. I want tenth next season. Moonshine Posted December 25, 2016 Author Share Posted December 25, 2016 FC St. Pauli Hamburg 2018/19 Pre-Season Pre-Season Expectations: Media: 11th Bookies: 350-1 Board: Mid-Table DFB-Pokal: Second Round (which are exactly the same as last season, spookily) Transfers: A serious transfer window this, both in terms of in (with a new transfer record set in signing Yanni Regasel) and out (with a new record receipt made by the sale of Ryo Myaichi, who was, on paper, my best player by some margin.). Out went last season's first choice AML (Myaichi), AMC (Buchtmann), DR (Horschuh on loan) and DL (Buballa), and in came replacements across the board - with Maddison, Autret, Gabbia and Regasel all immediate first-teamers. Net spend of only £1.75m seems pretty good, too. A poor start to the year with two 1-0 losses (and a 1-0 loss in the cup to boot) followed by a succession of wins, with goals flying in from all comers. At one point I had injuries to all for of my players who could play up front (and ended up bringing Niclas 'Matthew C' Behrendt off the bench) and still won away at Frankfurt. A reversion to playing with 2 DMs and an advanced forward seems to have brought the best out of Bouhaddouz' aging legs, and a third of the way through the season we top the table. The only way is down. An aside: this is the first year I can play regens from two seasons ago, and I blooded Rachid 'Matthew A' Coulibaly early on. To date he's made five appearances from the bench, for a single assist, but he is promising. DFB-Pokal Boring loss to Greuther Furth and that's that for the cups this year. Ballon d'Or and World Player of the Year Messi wins his seventh Ballon d'Or and sixth World Player of the Year, followed by Sergio Aguero and Neymar in both awards... If he carries on this way he'll win his 8th, too. God he's good. Apostles: Ignoring the very impressive feat of Carlos Tevez at Boca making the world team of the year, the all important apostles count remains at 20%, with Mata, Dybala, Marcelo and Pogba retaigning their places on the list. I've just sent Swend 'Pauli' Broderson, my third choice keeper - though very decent, and with 4.5* potential - on loan to Werder Bremen. I was very happy to do so as I feel he might well benefit from their training facilities as their third choice, above regular playing time in the 3. Bundesliga. After a sublime start to the seaosn, my now-usual mid-season slumpn came back with a vengeance. 12 points from eleven games just wasn't good enough. Bouhaddoiuz was on form, however, including four goals in a 5-1 thrashing of Dusseldorf, while we were never appalling in defeat or draw - merely average, instead - and that's just where we sit in the table (though I forgot to take a screenshot), dropping back to 6th place. January also saw the transfer in of Ivan Micunovic, an 18 year old Montenegrin ST costing £300k from Danish club Viborg FF, where he had scored 6 in 16. He has 3* CA and 5* PA, and I look forward to watching him develop - he already looks cracking. The other January news was the loss of an incredible transfer target, Petar Pavlovic, who joined Monaco for £375k (and nearly £3k less pw than he would have got from me). I had originally agreed a £125k deal in August for the Serbian u-21 international from Javor Ivanjica, but didn't have the funds to complete the deal. He's now touted as the next Vladimir Jugovic and if he, too, goes on to such a career as Jugovic I will be kicking myself into next Tuesday. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The one position I don't need is a Goalkeeper as I have a 2.5*/4.5* PA goalie in Stefan 'Pauli' Rakocevic and a 2.5*/3* in Swend 'Pauli' Brodersen... And yet. Holger 'Luke A' Poggenbrg is a GK of decentcurrent means, but some great PA. Handling and Reflexes are good, and he has very good physicals. If we can improve his ability with crosses (communication/command/jumping) then he might be challenging the Paulis in a few years time. Feridun 'Luke B' Engin looks great. Passing, vision, teamwork, first touch, some technique. He'll be running the midfield for years to come, if we can ensure his professionalism. Tugay 'Luke C' Yesil has pace but can't cross, has a great first touch but can't finish well, is stuck between being a winger and being a forward. I might train him as an inside forward. In fact, I vastly enjoyed this season ending run in, if only for the rise of Ivan Micunovic as a goalscorer, and the massive celebrations I had when Rachid 'Matthew A' Coulibaly scored on his first start. Even more impressive has been the rise of Stefan 'Matthew M' Apel. In 2017, he was rate as a 0.5*/2* player, with a fairly ambitious personality. In two years he has become a 2*/4* AMR, and my third best regen Apostle by CA (Roland'Matthew B' Dober is at 2.5*, but only turned 17 after January 1st so couldn't play this season). With The last game of the season a dead-rubber, I gave Stefan 'Matthew M' Apel his debut, and he rewarded me by scoring two goals from Rachid 'Matthew A' Coulibaly assists. Magnificent. I said I wanted tenth this season at the end of last, but I'm actually quite disappointed by the collapse that was, yet again, the second half of this... Squad Awards Bodiger wasn't the worst at discipline! His third season as Player of the Season sees him become a favoured personnel, and 8 yellows and a red mean he might becomeing less of an idiot at tackling. Plus, Rachid 'Matthew A' Coulibaly joins the likes of Mario Gotze and Timo Werner in winning best u17 player. Moonshine Posted December 28, 2016 Author Share Posted December 28, 2016 After praising the transfer system so much, I'm going to change my mind and criticise it a little where it relates to player happiness - to an extent. I rejected bids for Mathias Autret and Philippe Zeireis, only to face a mini player revolt in response. So Autret has been shipped off on loan to Grasshoppers for £1.3m in the hope that he'll be happy again when he returns, and Zeireis has gone for tuppence (£275k plus bonuses) to Terek Grozny after he demanded a transfer. I was happier to sell the latter as he isn't an Apostle but it was still irritating. Thankfully, my rejection of the £3.2m offer for Lasse Sobiech (my 28 year old rock at the heart of the defence) from just-relegated Koln didn't turn him against me. He's one of only four non-apostles in the first team (and subs) now - Aziz Bouhaddouz (who will go at the end of this season unless he top scores again at 32 - he's favourite to top score in the league) - Choi Kyoung-Rok (who's contract is up in May and who I may sell in January as a result) and Soren Gonther (who is 33 and now warms the bench, but is club captain) - though, and will have to be moved on at some point Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

After three years of 11th placed predictions, the media think I'm one place better! Squad: Transfers: Another year of massive changes. As I said above, my players played very well for most of last season despite a poor finish, and a lot of offers came in - resulting in Autret and Zeireis demanding to leave after offers were rejected. Autret went on loan for £1.3m to Grasshopper, Zeireis went permanently to Terk Grozny (alongside perpetual loanee Jakob Rasmussen, also for tuppence). Out on frees went Robin Himmelmann, my previous number 1 and Bernd Nehrig, who had amassed over 100 appearances each. I'm hoping that my young 'keepers, Rakocevic and Brodersen, Paulis both, will prove this decision wise. Nehrig (as well as Neudecker and van der Heijden) leaving left me without many MCs or DMs, and so in came three - Marco Hoger, from recently relegated Koln, and Gianluca Gaudino, from Bayern II, are brilliant players, and will hopefully form a lynchpin ahead of Yann Bodiger for years to come. Juan Pedrozo is young and talented and has prodigous potential, and I'm hoping for a bright future. Not mentioned in the incoming transfer is perhaps one of the most important - a 2 year extension to Matteo Gabbia's loan (look at those physicals!!), which keeps him in Hamburg until the end of his contract with Milan. He will start at centre back, in place of Zeireis. Gian-Luca Itter will cover for Bozovic at DL, and for the midfielders and DM, while Jonathan Harboe was a cheap punt for the future. Out, too, went Choi Kyoung-Rok and Jeremy Dudziak, both having hit the point where they weren't outstanding and with a bumper crop of young wingers fittingly enough in the wings, in Rachid 'Matthew A' Coulibaly, Roland 'Matthew B' Dober and Stefan 'Matthew M' Apel, their departures weren't too hard. I had tried to bring a bit more immediate talent in on those wings, but my loan deals didn't emerge and I'll have to trust in the youth throughout the season.
