English and Russian fans fight in Marseille

Recommended Posts

Very sad times. :( It's another huge turn off for me, when it comes to following England. That's why it's club before country, everytime.

And using the riot police wouldn't even be possible in cases like that as there are usually 'innocent' fans near/mixed with the hooligans.

In a few of the clips I've see I'm not sure it's even been specialist riot police, it appears to be regular police who I expect have received minimal training & instructions to lob in some teargas whenever they're not sure what to do or if they have control of the situation.

I shall be very disappointed if we do not get to see a water-cannon deployed at least once before the tournament is over. seeing a drunk push about by a jet of water while he attempts to keep a hold of his shorts is always amusing.

The club with the horse punching fan. :D

Club football is no better, just a smaller scale so less newsworthy.

Saw a bit on ITV news earlier, with a man being absolutely clattered by some thug, with a chair as he walked down some stairs. :(

But I did laugh at the fact that people are falling over themselves to absolve England fans of any blame whatsoever.

Well clearly nobody is, just because you have been called out doesn't mean you should double down on making up stuff.

Called out on what? Something I didn't say, about it being 100% England?

I stand by everything else. People are clearly not reading or watching English media if they think they're desperate to blame England fans.

Was at stadium. Before kick off we were in a bar just outside and was all good natured, but as we got in we were all stood in a huge group while they took forever getting everyone in, which I thought was fairly unsafe.

During the game everything was fine from where we were other than the flairs (how did they get them in?) Straight after the game finished, Russian fans charged at English fans. Police were absolutely nowhere and stewards were doing **** all. An absolute failure.

You smugly said that English fans were the only ones attacking people in the streets, we already have three other nationalities behaving like that as well and it's only Saturday night.

Posted on a Newcastle forum;

Charlie Wyett ✔ @CharlieWyett

The firework let off at end was the signal for Russian ultras to overpower tiny number of stewards to get into other section. Disgraceful

haha

Honestly, French organisation has been dreadful.

They completely focused on that terrorist crap, or they said so at least.

Literally everyone knew what's gonna happen in Marseille ever since groups were drawn and French police embarrassed themselves yet again.

Luckily, noone has died (yet).

Espn girl now reporting a incident at Baille station.

Metro site seems to confirm a closure. Really hope this all fake/bad media reports.

Pretty sure the story about a guy being killed at the Metro came from some idiot spoof site and is thankfully completely false.

Sounds like French ultras attacking Polish and Irish fans, not fighting between Polish and Irish.

Were you in an official England section, if not did it appear that the locals had no idea what could happen by having rival fans so close?

Good to hear that you're safe & well.

French authorities clarifying that incident at metro involved a French woman who has been hospitalised.

that guy above is the UK ambassador to France, so a reputable source  number of Brits in hospital he says

Every report I here or read is blaming Russians. Lineker made a good point on Twitter - only seems to happen where England fans go.
Any that have started fighting on the streets of France?
I didn't say it was 100% England. Think you need to read posts properly.

But I did laugh at the fact that people are falling over themselves to absolve England fans of any blame whatsoever.

No I didn't. I questioned the apportioning of blame. Not the involvement of others, because it's quite obvious that non-England fans are involved as well.

We got tickets through the ballot so wasn't official section but we were with England fans, didn't see any Russians in our area.

Saw England fans seated near the Russians in their area and I thought it was odd but assumed there was police in and around but clearly weren't. Can only assume they didn't have any idea. If they did know, why didn't they do far more to prevent issues (like having a police presence ffs) and if they didn't know, how on earth could they not?

It's really, really disappointing. Me and my group are safe but feels like we could very easily have had it worse. First time I've ever felt unsafe at football.

Think you'll find there are a quite a few groups of fans attending this tournament who get involved in dodgy ****.

While I obviously agree with the above, this is the kind of post I would expect if he was fighting against terrorists in the Mideast or Afghanistan, rather than in France.

Appalling crowd management there, Pukey. It does seem that football crowds are not give the same protection as similarly large gatherings & unfortunately I'm not surprised by what you've posted.

Coulthard, he asked a question which is miles away from your claim that he said England fans were the only ones & in fact his first post is that all the reports he has seen are of Russian fans, no mention of the English other than when repeating a statement from a Gary Lineker. As I said it's time to drop that side discussion as it appears you're chatting with each other but having different conversations & petty he said/he said posts are detracting from the main topic.

We got out quickly and had sorted a taxi back after a metro ride so we're safe in our accommodation and have avoided any trouble, just saw it kicking off for a couple minutes before getting the hell out of there.

So yeah, we're absolutely fine

It makes me appreciate the way it's done in England. I've seen things start kicking off at games in England but all gets dealt with quickly.

Seems like a perfect storm of local neds (Marseille has a lot of them from my experience), Russian headcases and standard English hooligans all being in the same place at once.

Was reading yesterday about how a group of English fans went somewhere a bit quieter for food at a pizzeria. Halfway through the meal some men described as 'African French' with scarves covering their faces attacked the place and threw flares into the place.

Seems like there are morons of every nationality.

I chatted with a Russian at a taxi rank about six weeks ago. He seemed quite personable, as it goes.

So there goes that sweeping generalisation.

If you're implying that the small group of Russians you encountered is an accurate representation of over 100m people I'd hate think what the perception of us Brit's for those living on the Mediterranean coast.

Being in Bordeaux, where it's all been really good natured between Wales fans, Slovakian fans and the locals, I can easily see how things could turn nasty when coming up against a set of locals determined to cause problems. Just thankful it hasnt happened here.

With regards to the segregation, Wales had a lot of fans in areas originally intended for Slovakian fans, yet there were no issues. I know England/Russia is different in that regard, but it does baffle me that football fans need that segregation to justify being able to behave or not.

World Cup in Russia should certainly be interesting

Russia have police at their games though. Some games in the RPL this season actually had more police than fans in attendance I believe.

No police when you have Russian ultras (who lets be honest, have a reputation) and after 3 days of English rioting was never a good idea.

Bordeaux are probably the most chilled out fans of major French clubs, I wouldn't expect much trouble for fans from local ultras there thankfully. Places like Nice though have some really nasty ****ers among their fans.

By all accounts it sounds like the french police have no idea what they're doing.

Jamie Vardy's missus was tear-gassed by police entering the stadium and has had a lot to say about the whole thing on twitter.

It's still amazing that in this day and age that police all over the world still have zero clue how to deal with large groups of people. Their first reaction is to always use a sledgehammer to hammer that proverbial nail into the wall. If they're not overreacting, they're nowhere to be seen.

If you're trying to sort out who was looking for trouble, then I would have thought that anyone who packs a balaclava to travel to a football tournament in the south of France in June would be a good place to start....
