That team in England's group.

Domestic season finished today and Russia manager Leonid ****skiy, who also manages CSKA Moscow, won the league.

Squad will be announced today or tomorrow but rumours that veterans Zhirkov, Shirokov and Kerzhakov will not be chosen. Dinamo Moscow, relegated for the first time in their 93 year history today, will probably have 2/3 players in the squad, while surprise 2nd place team FC Rostov are likely to have 0 players in the squad.

Also, the first ever naturalised player for Russia, Brazilian born Guilherme, is a possible inclusion as 3rd choice GK.

Edit: Squad announced just now.

Russia squad just announced.

Last minute injuries to Kuzmin and Zhirkov see them ruled out. Debut call up for Roman Neustadter from Schalke who has 2 friendly caps for Germany but was born in USSR. Got his Russian passport in time it seems.

MID: Alexandr Golovin, Alan Dzagoev, Roman Shirokov (all CSKA Moscow), Denis Glushakov (Spartak Moscow), Igor Denisov (Dinamo Moscow), Alexandr Samedov (Lokomotiv Moscow), Pavel Mamaev (FC Krasnodar), Oleg Shatov (Zenit St Petersburg), Oleg Ivanov (Terek Grozny)

ATT: Artem Dzyuba, Alexandr Kokorin (Zenit St Petersburg), Fyodor Smolov (FC Krasnodar)

CSKA Moscow - 8

Dinamo Moscow - 1

Schalke 04 - 1

Terek Grozny - 1

It wasn't really a necessary call up. He won't play so it's just to get the Russian's used to the idea of players being naturalised. There are rumours that Ari (Krasnodar) and Mario Fernandes (CSKA Moscow) will be naturalised in the future.

Diego Carlos (Ufa) has taken Russian citizenship also but is not good enough for national team, it's just to free a spot up in Ufa's squad.

Ryzhikov (Rubin), Dzhanaev (Rostov) and Kritsyuk (Krasnodar) had better season's then Guilherme.

Kritsyuk was the best GK in the Portuguese league during the first half of the season(way ahead of Casillas, Julio Cesar and Rui Patricio as examples), such a shame he left. Very good goalkeeper.

He's the new "golden boy" of Russian footie, still only 19.

Attacking midfielder who plays central mainly but can play wide as well. Burst onto scene with 2 goals in 3 caps for the national side and then a string of good performances for CSKA's first team since April. Penchant for scoring a cracker as well.

****skiy prefers him since he manages him at club level and his inclusion sees several established wingers and midfielders ignored. Bit of a wild card pick.

Status quo with regards to the squad - bar, at most, a handful of players - since around 2012.

Love me some Kokorin but aside from him, that's a weak set of forwards to be taking to a tournament. Defence (primarily CBs) in desperate need of renewal and some proper average midfielders in there.

Smolov will be the starting forward I think. Him or Dzyuba. Kokorin is by far the weakest of the forwards currently.

Smolov was the top scorer in the league with 20 goals this season in 29 apps, as well as 9 assists. Since the season resumed in Spring, he scored 14 goals in 11 games, been on an amazing run of form, finishing everything.

****skiy replaced Capello and immediately began using Dzyuba instead of Kokorin and he was the top scorer for Russian in the qualifiers, but his domestic form has dropped off.

It's a pretty old squad though, come 2018 I think we'll see something really new. A lot of the young promising mids and defenders have had to sit out (Golovin aside) to make way for experience for this tournament. There's not really any young defenders coming through. There's a set of centre backs aged 26-28 who'll probably step up for 2018 but they're not amazing.

In fact, it's just been announced that Dzagoev was injured yesterday and will miss the Euro's. Huge loss.

Of all the promising midfielders around, like Magomed Ozdoev, Pavel Mogilevets, Alexey Miranchuk, he's called up 32 year old Dmitry Torbinsky, who only played 800 mins all season, primarily at left back.

Dzyba's a very limited forward and isn't really international level, it's alright scoring against the likes of Liechtenstein and Moldova but that doesn't mean you're capable of leading the line at a tournament. Smolov is also unproven and it's hard to put faith in him solely on the strength of a good campaign domestically. I rate Kokorin but I don't think he's the best playing an isolated role up front (which judging by the squad, it looks like whoever's up front will be in a lone role) but offers pace and flexibility as he can play both other forward roles well.

What you've said RE Smolov could is exactly what England are doing with Vardy.

Smolov arguably one of the most form strikers in Europe in 2016, and has 12 caps with 5 goals, so not entirely unproven.

  • 2 weeks later...

Russia lost 2-1 to the Czech's yesterday.

Was a strange team with all 3 strikers in the squad starting at once. Akinfeev didn't play at all and none of the recognised left backs started.

After Dzagoev got injured before the tournament, Russia's other starting CDM went off injured today (Igor Denisov) and is likely to miss the tournament.

Nothing official yet nor a replacement call up. Likely to be Tarasov (who revealed the Putin top this year).

Ok now it's official he'll miss the tournament:

Yusupov admits he is out of shape after being on holiday for 2 weeks and has no boots or suitable clothes with him since he wasn't able to go back to Russia between his holiday and being called up. :D

Begs the question why a bigger squad wasn't named initially instead of just 23 straight off.

Was a pretty dross performance. Other than Smolov's strike in the 2nd half, I can't remember a good chance being created from open play in the entire game, just set plays.

Golovin in holding mid is a waste. So talented going forward but played deep due to injury.

I'd be lining up:

same defence

Shirokov Neustadter

Samedov Kokorin Shatov

Dzyuba

Next time around.

Pretty positively. Most viewed it as the hardest game to get anything from so they'll be happy with a point. Especially considering how the game was played, it was pretty undeserved.
