Euro 2016 squad predictions game

Recommended Posts

Here's the game, you predict the 23-man squads of your home nation and one other nation. For every player you get right in your home nation squad you get 1 point, for every player you get right in your other squad you get 1.5 points.

If you select a player that hasn't been capped by their national team for over 1 whole year (since 1st June 2015) and they get called up, you will receive 1 bonus point. For example, if Fernando Torres is called up by Spain and you predicted him, you will receive 1 bonus point. This rule does not apply to goalkeepers, for obvious reasons. It also applies to anyone who's uncapped. If an uncapped outfield player gets called up, you'll get the bonus point.

The final squads are announced on 1 June but I guess some nations will announce theirs way before that, so therefore the deadline to enter this competition is 10th May at 11pm.

You can edit your squads as much as you like up until the deadline in case of injuries or oversights etc, please try and stick to your guns so you're not just copying other squads though. Let's keep this interesting!

Anyone who edits their squad predictions post after the deadline of 10th May will be disqualified.

The final official squads which are present on 1 June are what I'll go off for scoring. For example if a nation announces their squad on 25th May and a player gets injured and pulls out before 1st June, you won't get points if you had predicted that player to be in the squad. If a player pulls out through injury after 1st June, that won't matter and you'll still get points.

Every squad has to have 3 goalkeepers, please bear that in mind.

Make it clear which is your home nation prediction and which is your other nation. I'm trusting you'll all be honest when it comes to this.

If you're from outside of Europe, it's fine to join in, just select the nation you feel you have the most knowledge about as your home nation.

Good luck!

What happens with injuries? For example, like the last World Cup, Ribery was called up then he got injured and got replaced by Cabella. If I predicted Ribery in the beginning, do I still get that point?

Edit: Sorry didnt read through. I'm an idiot. I'll post mine later this week. I'm procrastinating bad.

Do I have to pick England as my home nation? I live in England but I'm very much Australian when it comes to international football and don't really pay any attention to any English football outside of Coventry. La Liga is the only top league I actually watch so I'd be far more comfortable picking the Spain squad as my home nation.

Cool  The last England game I saw was vs Italy in Euro 2012... It's not that I support Spain (people who do that are weird) it's just the only European nation who's squad I have a good grip on.

Home Nation - Spain

Iker Casillas - Del Bosque such a moron

David De Gea

Sergio Rico

Gerard Pique

Sergio Ramos

Javi Martinez

Marc Bartra

Jordi Alba

Juan Bernat

Juanfran

Cesar Azpilicueta

Koke

Andres Iniesta

Cesc Fabregas

David Silva

Saul Niguez

Sergio Busquets

Juan Mata

Mikel San Jose

Pedro

Paco Alcacer

Alvaro Morata

Artiz Aduriz

I'll have to think about who my away side will be.

Ha I knew I'd completely forget someone in that midfield.

Edit - Have replaced Cazorla with Mata. He probably wont take Saul tbh but he'd be really stupid not to, he's like the ultimate utility man (can comfortably play anywhere from CB to CF) who also happens to be a very good player and pretty different to their other midfield options.

Javi Martinez also hasn't been called up in ages but their backup CB options are so weak and he's pretty versatile I'd be amazed if he didn't go. With San Jose and Saul both able to play CB could even potentially replace Bartra with another midfielder.

Yeah, confirmed on his own facebook page

"I'll miss the Euros.

To me that's very sad news.

So I could be standing here, feeling sorry for myself. I could fear for my career, as others may do. I could give up.

That is not me.

I decide on my future .

There is a bigger picture to everything in life and only failing to see it, will cause me to fail.

I am a hard worker and a fighter and if you are too, then you know that, to people like us, success can come in many forms. We trust ourselves when the going gets tough.

I have the greatest respect for those who overcome their personal challenges in life with a positive attitude.

I want to live up to that.

So I remain calm and positive. I will continue to follow my path and I will do so with more conviction than ever.

I trust my friends and teammates to do well and do us proud at the next European Championships in France. I am now officially their most fervent supporter and I will be there to support them.

Written from my hospital bed,

Never giving up,

Vincent Kompany"

That Belgium squad is so strong on paper!

Who's the other Lukaku!?

A left-back I believe, he is on FIFA anyway.

An awesome squad. Chadli must be gutted.

How harsh selecting 24 players btw, just the one missing out :(

Link to post

Thought Chadli was a dead cert though. But looking at that squad, it's hard to drop one for him.

Feeling smug that I left him out of my prediction now. He has barely featured for us this season to be honest. I'm more surprised Mirallas isn't in. Surely one of the defenders will be the one who's cut, nobody needs nine defenders. Hopefully Engels or Meunier dropped since I didn't predict them. :D

No Lacazette or Gameiro :thdn:

I get that Martial is the next Henry and all but I doubt he would've been picked if he was still in Monaco

That Belgium squad is so strong on paper!

Who's the other Lukaku!?

From what I gather Jordan Lukaku could be playing in the Premier League next season. Watford is supposedly eying him.

Not a bad player. Technically above average. Explosive player good going forward, but I'm having my doubts about his defensive positioning. Considering he's playing in the Belgian League for Oostende he's still relatively untested at a higher level.

On-topic: I think our squad looks good imo but our defence is gonna be a problem I fear. Both our centre-halve from the previous World Cup are gone (Kompany injured, Van Buyten retired) and our back-ups for the defensive positions are not quite up to the standard of the rest of the squad. Vermaelen is never gonna be fit for an entire championship, Lombaerts is decent without anything more and Denayer is talented, but he is what he is. A 20-year defender currently playing for Galatasaray. Still has lots to learn and looked a bit shaky against Portugal.
