Football Manager 16 Benchmark Thread

After previous threads by Yugo23 (Hope you don't mind the c/p of your template) I was interested to see how FM16 compares to 14 & 15, as with the 15 thread I've created a save with all 116 leagues from all 59 nations loaded. Total player count is 186.000. Detail level settings are their default values, except setting EPL to full detail.

In an added twist I've also created two start points, Benchmark - A starts on 20th August just like 14 & 15 however as this means that the busiest day of the year (deadline day) is missed I have also created Benchmark - B which will test performance when FM has to process a much larger amount of transfer & contract data.

How do you run this benchmark?

First, download benchmark save games from one of the following mirrors (I will add more as & when I get round to it):

Once loaded, ensure that auto save interval is disabled, and also set processing to Fast (Less Responsive), found at Preferences, More Match Settings.

Optionally, restart your computer and close any unnecessary programs before running this benchmark. From my experience this has very small effect on processing times, if at all. Also, there was no difference in processing speed with/without huge graphics folder.

After you load benchmark save game, just go on holiday for a week, and measure the time needed for processing.

If you're running on a laptop I suggest having it plugged in & set to High-Performance.

Any preferences on the table format? Excellent performance increases when comparing Test A to the FM15 results on my systems, on FM 15 my i7-920 came in at 5m32s & the 6820HK at 5m10s.

Edit: Decided to recreate the Test B criteria on FM15 & OMG the difference is like going from a Classic Beetle to modern 911 Turbo. (sorry Kriss, I'll see if I can give myself an infraction, even though it is an apt comparison)

i7-920: 16m 29sec

i7-6820HK: 16m 55sec

Edit: Wanted to see what the Skylake could do with the frequency locked at a value similar to my old Bloomfield

That comparison to FM15 is quite surprising. I know FM16 is quicker but i had no idea that difference was that massive.

It's an almost unbelievable increase in performance. I suppose there's been some much needed optimisation going on for FM16.

Indeed, although that might tip me over the edge in terms of finally replacing the 920. I've been tempted for a couple of years but couldn't really justify it but with Skylake-E close to release & with these performance gains for FM16 I am close to convincing myself.

Edit: I'm interested in seeing if anyone else tries the Test B criteria on FM15, if only to validate my results.

Finally glad to try the benchmark test where I wouldn't be embarrassed to post the results (got somewhere between 12 and 15 minutes last year on my old pc)

For anyone building a system with FM as their only gaming need, which is a lot of people I know (myself included), with that score in mind you could probably build a system for around £200 that would run FM pretty impressively. (Excluding maxed out graphics)

The only issue is that it's only dual core which as of yet only seems to have marginal deficiencies unless you use max details on leagues you aren't currently managing in.

Both the i7-6820HK entries are the defiance laptop, the i7-920 is my ageing gaming tower.

Edit: Still hoping to see a few older systems being put through their paces, getting that sort of comparison might be more beneficial for those considering an upgrade.

I don't usually use my old (2010) 13" Macbook Pro for FM, but thought I'd benchmark it anyway just to compare to older tech and something non-Windows based.

By the way, trying to download Test B from Mediafire results in a nasty little file that isn't Test B at all - it's some sort of browser redirect to a so-called Mac Cleaning website. Downloading it to my regular Windows PC is fine however, and I simply transferred the game save to the MBP via my home network.

Yeah, it could have been better.. Still it's a slight improvement towards the usage of more than four cores, the difference was bigger last year when comparing 6700K vs 5820K, I think both were at 4.5GHz then.

It would be interesting if you Makoto Nakamura could post some results from your 6700K at 4.5GHz just to be able to compare our processors at the same clock speed. The IPC of the 6700K is considerably higher so i'm thinking the 200MHz difference is quite a big factor.

Broadwell-E is going to release first with 10 cores.

By then if you would want a truly stress test for these lines, the difference in cores/threads would show more if the number of competitions simed in full details would increase. How much that is practical (I personally don#t sim that much on full details) is another thing, but it's obvious the number isn't that highly. The OC'ed Pentium G (2 Cores / 2 Threads) is outperforming some Core i5s (4/4). That's Intel's desktop budget line, the level below the Core i3s (2 cores/4 threads). This wouldn't happen even in a typical AAA real-time graphics 3d video game, and those don't scale as much as FM's match sim does, not even at their most optimized, presumably because depending on the number of cores/threads available, the matches are simply calculated in parallel. The more threads available, the more matches can be calculated in parallel. The load is more like application software rather than your average 3d video game, but then as it's a measure of how long it takes to calculate something rather than about consistency of frame rates of images (all stuttering or fluid picture), that's rather logical. :-)

Increasing the number of leagues run on full detail is a true test however having seen hundreds or even thousands of user submitted saves while working at SI the percentage of people who increase the settings from default could be in the single digits.

I do run all comps other than domestic reserve & youth comps in full detail & the unmeasured performance difference over my earlier FM saves is impressive, I'll run the FM15/FM16 comparatives on my machines when I get home to get a value on the difference between the two versions.
