My opening gambit - 3DC or bust

Recommended Posts

I am looking for assistance with a tactic I am putting together for use in League 2 as Portsmouth.

The basics of it as as follows:

GK

3 x DC (DCL and DCR as CD and DCC as LD)

DML and DMR as attacking WB

2 x MC (been testing as DLP and BWM combo but considering 2 x BWM of defence)

1 x Shadow Striker(attacking)

1 x Advance Playmaker(attacking)

1 x Deep Lying Forward(support)

Control mentality and flexible shape.

I have run a number of holiday test runs using the tactic with no TI or PI other than the default ones.

So far the holiday tests have been quite pleasing. out of 5 runs, Portsmouth gained automatic promotion 3 times and 1 play off promotion and a play off final defeat. In the league, Portsmouth have always had the meanest defence with the highest conceeded being just 45 goals. However, attacking wise they are mid table or lower for goals scored.

Initially I was using the DLF as attacking but put him on support and the number of goals scored increased but only by a small amount. I also had a BWM and DLP as my MC combo but have taken note of the new tactic Mr Rosler has created and his idea of 2 x BWM acting together in midfield.

I am hoping that our resident tactical gurus might be able to point me in the right direction with suggestions for PI and TI.

So far, I am theorising using the Exploit flanks and float crosses for my WB's to get balls in for my DLF and SS.

I do know I can possible expect AI to try getting players into the wide areas left open with the maruading WB's. I am hoping the BWM combo with the 3 DC will help keep the defence quite tight.

I will plan to actually run a game with me in control tonight so I can take the team talks and look at OI effect. And I can also bring in players if needed rather than using the base Portsmouth team.

So what do you guys think?

My suggestion would be to actually watch some games. Holidaying will tell you nothing unless you watch the matches you holiday through afterwards, and even then you'll be trying to second guess what the AI manager has been doing.

You say you don't concede many, but don't score many either. Are the BWMs / WBs linking up with your front 3 effectively? How are the front 3 working together? Play some games with you in control and see how things are working (or not).

We also don't know what duties the MC and WB players have been given.

I have tinkered and tweaked the hell out of this and feel that I may be on to something now.

Tactic now stands as this:

3HiNdiM.jpg

My Team Instructions are as follows:

c1cSlEv.jpg

Wingback Player Instructions:

iQd8OpH.jpg

Central DC Player Instructions:

RmpF9ub.jpg

Shadow Striker Player Instructions:

w6lQSqb.jpg

Advanced Playmaker Player Instructions:

OiAFuR6.jpg

False Nine Player Instructions:

z25SE3Y.jpg

All Other Player Instructions are default.

I am not saying that this a plug and play guaranteed winner tactic as I don't think there is one this year. But it has been my most consistent tactic to date. When I ran the holiday games, I was very defensively sound but lacking in goal threat. My tweaks seem to have fixed that lack of goals without too much damage to the defence.

The 2 best holidayed efforts were as follows:

P46 W22 D14 L10 F58 A40 GD18 Pts80

P46 W21 D14 L11 F65 A37 GD28 Pts77

So far I have only played 18 games where I have been in charge but the results are as follows:

P18 W11 D2 L5 F31 A20 GD11 Pts35

And if that for was to remain consistent till the end of the season it would be:

P46 W28 D5 L13 F79 A51 GD28 Pts89

Thats showing an improvement would net me automatic promotion, if not the title in League 1( I am putting it to the test for my previously promoted Portsmouth side).

With the goals I do concede, there are a lot that come from Set Pieces or Penalties. The majority of the open play ones are due to the AI getting long range crosses in that their players win and score from. Otherwise the AI are reduced to long range shots as the 3DC and 2BWM are closing them down and giving no space. I have only been caught once by a breakaway goal and twice conceded long range shots. I have found that with this tactic the all 3 DC need a decent Pace rating. Although it is in the limited defender role, I feel it is vital to this tactic to ensure the DC's are closing down fast to limited shots and passing opportunities.

The attacking threat in this tactic is coming from the F9, SS, AP and 2 WB. Out of the 31 goals scored in that 18 games stretch, 10 have come from the F9 and 4 each for the SS and AP with the WB combining for 7 goals. I would highly recommend the WB having a decent finishing rating as they do get a lot of shot chances.

When watching this tactic in motion, it is quite nice to view as the passing is crisp and spread between the wings.

In the last few matches I have been testing dropping the mentality down to counter when facing a better side and it seems to help shore up while not effecting the quality.

The stats for possession and chances reads well. Over the 18 games I average 54% possession with 15 shots per game and 2 CC while the opposition get just under 10 shots and 1 CC per game.

Looking at the games I do lose, they are always bar 1 exception to teams running similar tactics with 3DC 2WB and 2 or 3MC. So I will need to figure out how to combat that.

So if you have made it this far, well done and I hope you might have something you might think might help with improving this tactic.

but why are you holidaying?

just to prove that one of the top 3 teams (as per the Skybet betting odds at time of posting) in League 2 can actually win it using your tactic - I'm sure you probably could with a 2-3-5 system

as a user of a 3-at-the-back system, you generally keep it quite tight, leading to a lot of games finishing 1-0 (which you'd expect, your sacrificing attacking threat for defensive stability)

I did a Juventus save in the beta, and conceded under 20 goals in the first season (league best) while scoring around 50-70 goals in the first season (around the 8th best in the league, but I was happy to win games 1-0)

for the record, I had 7 defeats (including twice by Barcelona in the CL), 11 draws, and the rest were wins (Won the Italian Cup, CL last 16 being variable amount of fixtures)

The holidaying was just for test in principle for the tactic with no TI or PI aside from the defaults. Yes Portsmouth are one of the top sides in the League, but you still need to find the right tactic as I tried a few others with holidaying and they failed.

The real test has been now with me in control and it is in a second season with Portsmouth now in League 1 so no longer one of the top teams.

I think that i you want to really test any tactic is to actually play the matches.

That way you can make the changes that you feel are necessary.

Wisła Kraków, polish Ekstraklasa.

8 games won in a row now.

Home attacking, away counter.

Fantastic tactic.

Something that I think conflicts: You assign limited defender duties to all of your CDs, but you instruct the team to play out of defence. You also have the central limited defender set up to try more risky passes.

You read that wrong as the central DC is fewer risky passes as default in the role

Havent played them yet with this tactic. The last couple of games have been disappointing draws (0-0 away at lower league in the cup and 1-1 at home to a team I really should have beat).

Need to be taking more of our chances though. I find finishing in this game is woeful at times. Nothing to do with the tactic.

Ill maintain this for rest of the season and report how I end up.

Have you tried adjusting the mentality from Attacking to Counter? I find when I come up against a team defending deep, swapping to counter helps break them down.

And I certainly agree with the finishing as there are chance aplenty and many in the area, but they just don't go in.

I am playing with the crossing settings to see if whipped crosses have any effect and also trying varied aim points rather than to centre

Just played the replay of the Cup tie I drew. 17 shots (6 on target) won the game 1-0. That was on Attack. Getting behind them wasn't the problem its shots going ridiculously wide that's an issue for me. Again not the tactic.

I have now opened a tread in the Downloads section. It doesn't have the tactic linked yet due to being at work but will do late tonight or early tomorrow
