Excuse my ignorance

Recommended Posts

Sorry if this is a stupid question but what does U18 squad and U21 squad mean? I assume that it means teams for people 18 and under and 21 and under. What I am confused about is why, if that is the case, it seems I can put anyone on these teams no matter of age??? sorry soccer ignoramous here...

A U-Number team is a team that is for players under the specified age. That is, U18s are 17 and young, U21s are 20 and young. This age is usually the players' age at the start of the year, that is, someone who turns 18 in late January will still be eligible.

You can put anyone you want in those squads, but they'll only be eligible based on the competition rules. Over age players are not going to be eligible in most U18 and U19 leagues, but will be able to play in friendlies for those squads. A lot of U21 and U23 leagues double as reserve leagues (i.e. the U21s in England), and a certain number of over age players can play each match.
