How Can I activate and Install the Full Game?

If you have bought a boxed version of the game, the code can be found above where the disc sits within the box.

If you have the 'Limited Edition' version of the game with the Football Manager Documentary, you will also have a code for the documentary. We've shown where these two codes can be found in the image below:

limited_edition_code_overview.jpg

If you put the disc in, you will be prompted to install the game using the game code. Use the instructions below to activate your game.

If you have bought the game digitally you should receive a code directly from your retailer. If you have not, you need to contact them directly.

Once you have your activation code, do as follows to activate and start downloading your game:

- Download the Steam client: http://store.steampowered.com/about/

- Install Steam on your computer

- Once installed, open up Steam

- Go to +ADD A GAME at the bottom-left of the window

- Then select Activate a product on Steam

- Enter your pre-release Activation Code

- Steam should now download your game.

My game doesn’t appear to have updated to the full version after the full game was released?

- To make sure your game downloads, make sure FM16 is not already running in the Pre-Release Beta version.

- If it doesn't update on launch, restart Steam.

- If that still doesn't work, verify your game cache as shown below:

- Load Steam

- From the 'Library' section, right-click on the game and select 'Properties' from the menu.

- Select the 'Local Files' tab and click the 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache' button.

- Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes. This will always download a number of files even if you've just verified the game.

- Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

- We recommend verifying your cache twice to make sure all files are fully downloaded.

How Do I run the game in offline mode?

Like previous versions, Football Manager 2016 can only be activated and played through the Steam platform. The game can be purchased as a boxed copy or a digital download, but both versions require Steam and an Internet connection.

Football Manager 2016 will need Internet access for its activation process because Steam is a network-based platform. FM2016 customers that do not want Steam to connect to Internet can launch the Steam client in "Offline Mode" after installation. Internet access after installation of the game will only be needed to apply game patches or Steam updates, play ‘online’ network games, use the Steam Workshop, use the Steam Store or use any of the uploading features included in FM2016.

We have outlined below the steps to set Steam to Offline Mode.

- Start Steam whilst being connected to the Internet - make sure that the ‘Remember my password’ box on the login window is checked

- Verify that all game files are completely updated and that there are no current downloads on Steam (‘View’ -> ‘Downloads’)

- Launch the game you would like to play offline to verify that there are no further updates to download. Shut down the game and return to Steam once you have confirmed that the game can be played

- Go to ‘Steam’ -> ‘Settings’ to ensure that the ‘Don't save account credentials on this computer’ option is NOT selected

- Click on the top left ‘Steam’ menu and select ‘Go Offline’

- Select ‘Restart in Offline Mode’. This will restart the Steam client and it will no longer connect to Internet when it is launched

If you would like to reconnect Steam to the Internet in the future to download game updates, activate new products or play multiplayer modes on your games, please select ‘Go Online’ from the top left ‘Steam’ menu.

How Can I make sure my save game has completed to the Cloud?

- When Saving the Game, select ‘FM’ -> ‘Save As’

- From the save Panel select the 'Cloud' tab. Save the game within this folder by clicking the ‘Save’ button.

- The Save Game will only be synced to the Cloud when you exit the game, so please only exit Steam when the save game has been fully synched to the Cloud.

- If you try to exit the game before it's synched, a pop-up will remind you to wait until this is complete.

- You must have an active Internet connection and be running Steam Online to use the Cloud Save Settings.

I’ve encountered a crash dump on launching the game

(This FAQ entry is for users on PC. If you're on a Mac, please read THIS thread instead for assistance)

If you receive a crash dump on game launch, please bear in mind a crash dump is the generic response for any type of crash – deleting the crash dump file will not help. There are a few troubleshooting techniques we suggest you undertake in order to get the game running.

Normally a crash dump on game start is related to a system or conflicting error, so we suggest the following steps to be completed in the following order:

- We suggest trying each of the following. After each stage is done, try the game again before trying the next one. If you still have issues, move onto the next suggestion and complete it. Please do try them all - if you skip a step you may not resolve your issue.

- Make sure your Graphics Card drivers and installed and fully up to date

- If running on a laptop with dual graphics cards, make sure they are configured for the correct card to run with FM

- Make sure your Anti-Virus isn’t interfering with Steam or FM as this can cause problems when installing or launching the game

- Make sure your Windows Updates, DirectX and Net Framework are installed and up to date

- Make sure any conflicting programs have been uninstalled

If you have completed all of the above without being able to resolve your issue please raise a support ticket with Sega by contacting them at help@sega.co.uk. Please include as many details as possible and list any troubleshooting techniques you’ve tried already so they can help you in the most efficient way.

The game is stuck on the loading screen

If you launch the game and find it’s stuck on the loading screen, there are a few troubleshooting steps we suggest undertaking in order to get it to work.

First of all, remove any Workshop files like custom graphics and logos you may have added in preparation of launching the game. This can occasionally interfere or slowdown the game when launching.

Once you’ve done this, we would suggest deleting your cache and preferences, then reverifying the game cache via Steam. Details on how to do this below:

Delete Cache

Delete Preference

Reverify Cache

Once you’ve completed all those steps above in the order listed, please then try relaunching the game (still without any added Workshop or custom files) and see if it now processes past the loading screen. If it does load without issue now and you were trying to add custom files, please close your game down and re-add any custom files to see if the issue is now fully resolved.

If you have completed all of the above without being able to resolve your issue please raise a support ticket with Sega by contacting them at help@sega.co.uk. Please include as many details as possible and list any troubleshooting techniques you’ve tried already so they can help you in the most efficient way.

My game has frozen and won’t respond

If the game becomes frozen during playing Football Manager 2016 try the following troubleshooting techniques in order to try and resolve the issue.

Delete Cache

Delete Preference

Reverify Cache

Uninstall the game reinstall.

Once you’ve done this, re-launch the game and try again.

If this still hasn’t resolved the issue, it could well be an overheating issue, especially if the problem occurred whilst playing a 3D match. To determine whether this is the case, first of all try and clear out all the vents and make sure the fans are working on your system.

We would then suggest running a program to monitor your system temperature whilst the game is open. An example of a program that performs this function is SpeedFan. Please bear in mind that this application was not developed by Sports Interactive or Sega and we provide no support or guarantee regarding its use. Please proceed at your risk.

If you switch the game to ‘Windowed’ mode via the in-game preferences you will be able to monitor your temperature whilst running the game. If anything runs at 90c or above you may well have an internal issue with your machine and we would recommend consulting an IT professional.

If your system temperature is fine, we would recommend checking your Graphics Card for errors with a stability test. An example of a program that performs this function is the FurMark Burn-In Test. Again please bear in mind that this application was not developed by Sports Interactive or Sega and we provide no support or guarantee regarding its use. Please proceed at your risk.

If you can run this test without issue for 15 minutes then the issue is unlikely to be directly related to the graphics card.

I’ve just upgraded to Windows 10 and the game no longer works

Problems with Launching the game:

First of all manually uninstall anything Graphics Card related (Intel, nVidia and AMD) using Windows Control Panel -> Program and Features.

Once uninstalled, restart your system then install the latest drivers, making sure the latest version was successfully installed. These drivers can be found via the Graphics Card Drivers website:

Intel – https://downloadcenter.intel.com

Nvidia – http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

AMD - http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Once this is done, check your system manufacturers’ website to make sure you have the latest drivers available for your system.

Once this process is complete, use Windows Update to check and make sure there are no outstanding updates available for your system.

Then try to run the game. If you're still having issues please raise a support ticket with Sega by contacting them at help@sega.co.uk.

Problems with Saving the game

If you already have a save game, can you try right clicking your save file, and click properties.

Then see if there is an 'unblock' button. If so, please click it, then click OK and try loading the save. Once you've done this, go to FM -> Save As and save the game with a different file name to see if it will save correctly.

If not, can you go to the security tab, then click Edit, click on your username in the list, and in the bottom area select 'Full Control', the OK and OK again.

We also recommend doing this for the save games folder. Again right-click on the folder and go to 'Properties' and make the above changes to the security tab.

Then try loading the save and again go to FM -> Save As and save the game with a different file name to see if it will save correctly.

Then try to run the game. If you're still having issues please create a thread within our technical issues/crashes PC sub forum which can be found here - http://community.sigames.com/forumdi...l-Issues-on-PC

Please include as many details as possible and list any troubleshooting techniques you’ve tried already so they can help you in the most efficient way.

User receives ‘Game Unavailable Message’ or game has updated and no longer launches

This is most likely due to the game encountering an incomplete install or update.

To combat this, please verify your Steam cache. This can be done by following the instructions below:

Verify Game Cache:

- Load Steam

- From the 'Library' section, right-click on the game and select 'Properties' from the menu.

- Select the 'Local Files' tab and click the 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache' button.

- Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes. This will always download a number of files even if you've just verified the game.

- Once the process is completed, the Check Window will automatically exit.

- We recommend verifying your cache twice to make sure all files are fully downloaded.

I receive a ‘Steam’ or ‘Football Manager is already running’ message

If you receive an error message stating that ‘Steam is already’ running, please read the troubleshooting techniques below to resolve the issue.

First of all, please see this 'Steam is already running' topic for instructions - https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8787-wyil-1543

Sometimes, if you launch the game too quickly after shutting it down, or get impatient after double-clicking the shortcut, you can get this when your system senses the game is running in two instances. If this is the case, do the following:

- Right-click on your Windows Taskbar (normally found at the bottom)

- Click on 'Task Manager'

- Go to the tab 'Processes'

- Sort alphabetically by clicking 'Image Name'

- Find fm.exe *32

- Click so it's selected, then click the 'End Process' button in the bottom-right hand corner

- Do this for any fm.exe *32 instance

- Once this is done, close the Taskbar and launch the game normally - be patient when it attempts to load

My save game no longer loads

If your system shut down or crashed mid-save then the file will be corrupted and cannot be fixed.

Likewise if you game has been force closed for any reason there is a chance of save game corruption.

The only opportunity to get the save back is to try and use Windows ‘Restore Previous Versions’ function. This will not always be on by default so may only work for some users.

To use this functionality, first go into your 'Documents' folder. Within there should be a Sports Interactive Folder. Go into the Football Manager 2016 folder.

Go into 'games' and right click on your save which no longer loads. In the menu that opens is an option called 'Restore Previous Versions', click that and see if it works. It'll first scan for a previous version then potentially give you the option to 'Restore'.

To make sure you don't have an issue like this again, we'd very much recommend going into your in-game preferences when you load up FM and turn on 'New File for Every Auto Save' option under the auto saves. We'd also suggest turning it on onto weekly or fortnightly so you always have a recent back up in case of any problems.

You get a DEP or Data Execution Prevention error message

- Go to ‘Start’ > ‘Control Panel’ > ‘System’ > ‘Advanced’ > ‘Performance’ > ‘Data Execution Prevention’.

- Select ‘Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select’.

- Select ‘Add’, navigate to C:\Program Files\Steam (or your default Steam directory), and add Steam.exe to the exception list.

Additionally, you will need to add the FM.exe using the same process as above

The FM.exe file can be located here by default - C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Football Manager 2016

I'm warned that the fm.exe contains a virus or unwanted program

If you receive a message on game launch that ‘fm.exe contains a virus’, this is a false-positive by the anti-virus program and can be ignored. You may want to update your virus definition software which may help, but until the anti-virus software developers update their software you may encounter this message.

There is no virus contained within the FM.exe.

If you are unable to launch the game because of this message, go into your Anti-Virus program and add the FM.exe to your exceptions. If you are unsure how to do this, consult your anti-virus program’s website for detailed instructions.

The game not launching on systems with unsupported resolutions such as Netbooks

Bear in mind if you are running on a resolution which is under the minimum resolution of Football Manager 2016 you are not officially supported and the game was not tested under these conditions.

For example, if you are using a Netbook, the minimum resolution requirements for FM2016 (1024 x 768) will not be met, as the screen resolution of your computer is 1024 x 600.

You can boot the game (avoiding the 'game is already running message') by following these steps:

- Open Steam and access your Games Library

- Right-click on Football Manager 2016 -> Properties -> General -> Set Launch Options

- Type this in the box: -small_screen -windowed

- Click on OK, close the window and launch FM16 through Steam

Typically Netbooks offer fewer features compared with Notebooks and Desktop computers; for example, less processing power and reduced ability to run resource-intensive operating systems. Based upon this, you will need to refer to the System Manufacturer to confirm that your computer is designed for resource-intensive games such as Football Manager 2016. SEGA and SI do not offer support for this game on Netbooks.

I've encountered a crash dump on launching or playing the game [Mac]

Delete Cache

Delete Preference

Reverify Cache

Once you’ve done this, re-launch the game and try again.

If it still crashes at exactly the same point, please create a thread on the Football Manager 2016 Technical Issues/Crashes forum with the following information (only where relevant – no save game is needed for example if the game crashes on game start:

A Crash Report

The save game file just before the issue occurs (this file can be located at the following default location: /Users/[Your Mac Username]/Documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2016/games)

The in-game date when the crash occurred

Once we have the above information we will be able to look into your issue directly and determine what the cause is. The sooner we can determine the cause; the sooner we will be able to provide further assistance to resolve this issue for you.

I receive a game unavailable message when I try and launch the game [Mac]

After each step, please re-test the issue.

- First try exiting and restart Steam

- Then make sure your Mac is fully updated

- If that doesn’t work, exit Steam and rename the ClientRegistry.blob and restart Steam

- If you’re still having issues exit Steam and delete everything except SteamApps under the Steam installation directory, ~/Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Steam, this will force Steam to update when you log in

- Complete the Verifying GCF Cache Files process to repair your game cache files.

- If the issue persists, it may be caused by a network configuration issue. Please complete the Troubleshooting Network Connectivity guide to further assess the problem.

If you have completed all of the above without being able to resolve your issue, please create a thread within our technical issues/crashes PC sub forum which can be found here - http://community.sigames.com/forumdisplay.php/514-Crashes-Launch-and-Technical-Issues-on-Mac-or-Linux
