"The teams from the north of England are terrible," he said.

"When we play them I have counted their centre-backs booting up to 30 long balls upfield per game.

"The weather over here is killing me. We'll get one day of sunshine for every 30 days of rain, and it is driving me to despair.

"My girlfriend and my mother are frightened about not seeing the sun in England. They miss being in Madrid.

He'd jump at the chance imo.

Should send him to play for Morton. I think it's only sunny for about half a day a year in Greenock.

If that's true it would surely confirm the end for Martins?

Apparently from speaking to people in the office and reading a few articles he's a very quick direct attacker who can play on both the right and left.

Not a great scoring record, but the sort of player who can really get at a defence. Has been linked with Liverpool, City and Portsmouth in the past and has been valued at between £6-10m.

Does this mean a change in formation? Or will Jonas play as one of the front men in a 4-3-3?

Does this mean N'Zogbia or Milner is going to leave? i think he is a right winger - so possibly Milner will go.

Don't know much about him personally - I remember that Portsmouth, Liverpool and Man City were linked to him. I have read that Balague rates him - said Liverpool should buy him as he is a better version of Benayoun.

Anyway - good to see some progress made on the transfer front. Perhaps shows that there is actually something going on behind the scenes. Despite ppl's criticisms.

Quite glad the club are now doing business in the proper way.

Seconded. I know it's frustrating in not getting snippets through the press, but the way they've gone about this is spot on. More of the same please.

Some of the lads on NO reckon he's very versatile - can play on either wing and through the middle. Is also said to be very quick and direct.

Luque was absolutely brilliant before he got to Newcastle. Sad for the guy and the club the way it went.

i read that Jonas only had 2 years on his contract remaining...if we're buying out his contract surely he's not being paid near on 7mil euros a year to play for Mallorca?

if so we need to stop with this nonsense. things like this destroys us and puts us in a hole. we could have signed 2 decent players if not 3 with that apparent 11/12 mil we could be playing for his contract.

is it only 11/12m or is it that on top of the reported fee of 13 ?

Reports say you paid 7m and half what he owes which brings it up to about 12 or 13m ? Something like that anyway, that's in the region of the fee that was initially reported isnt it ?

i don't think we paid anything for him. we/he bought out his contract. read that in spain if you've played out 3 years of your contract you can buy out the rest.

as long as we haven't paid over the odds on him. like luque. like marcelino back in the day. etc etc. we need to be sensible.

I didnt think he did the whole buying the contract out thing, thought you brought him but there is some outstanding contractual issue between him and the club and their partial ownership with Velez Sarsfield ?

Someone owes Velez I thought ? He's paying it and you're stumping up half ? I am sure it's something like that.

Not sure anyone knows tbh

Didnt a club in Argentina still have some rights on him though?

Maybe you had to pay them some money as well?

From the link above ... pick the bones out of that one !

The Spanish club want compensation after claiming that Gutiérrez walked out to join Newcastle with two years of his contract remaining. Fifa, football's world governing body, has been called in to settle the situation, with the player insisting that rules allow players under the age of 28 who have been at a club for at least three seasons to buy out the remainder of their contract.

The impasse is not a threat to the 24-year-old's transfer, but the size of the fee Newcastle eventually end up paying - thought to be up to £7million - will be affected by Fifa's ruling because Newcastle are likely to share the cost with the player. “Jonás is a wonderful signing,†Keegan said. “He will be a terrific addition. I'm sure our fans will enjoy watching him.â€

Gutiérrez, who made his international debut in February, will link up with his new team-mates within the next ten days. Newell's Old Boys, his first club, will receive about 50 per cent of the eventual fee. Gutiérrez will have an early opportunity to face his former club in what could be a frosty return to the Balearics when Newcastle play Mallorca in a pre-season tournament on August 3. Supporters will hope to see the Spiderman mask more regularly than their counterparts in Mallorca, Gutiérrez having failed to score last season and mustering a modest five goals in 96 La Liga appearances.

That last bit about his recent goal scoring should cheer everyone up

Seems to have brought it out after all, bit about you paying half and also a fee mentioned so who knows ?

MIKE ASHLEY is willing to sell Newcastle for £420million.

The Toon supremo named his price last month when a New York finance company made an approach to buy the club.

Ashley told private equity investors InterMedia Partners — based in the swanky Chrysler Building — he wanted £420m to seal the deal.

The AmericansÂ’ interest was so serious, owner Ashley permitted them to see all of NewcastleÂ’s financial documents, accounts and records.

And both sides were forced to sign gagging orders, banning them from ever disclosing details of the talks.

An insider confirmed: “The Americans specialise in investing in sport and wanted to break into the soccer market in Europe.

They thought Newcastle would be the ideal starting place for them.”

Speculation has been rife in City markets for the past six months that mega-bucks Ashley has been on the lookout for a buyer — if the price was right.

The Yanks were hoping Ashley would sell at around £320m — and were shocked when the Toon owner wanted £100m more.

Our insider added: “As soon as Ashley asked for £420m the deal was dead.

“The Americans were interested but didn’t think they could justify that level of investment.”

Billionaire Ashley bought Newcastle from Freddy Shepherd last year for £137m and took on around £80m of debts.

But the fact he has now put a price on the club will only create more uncertainty for boss Kevin Keegan.

He is still rebuilding his relationship with Ashley after an outburst at the end of last term resulted in the manager being hauled down to London for showdown talks.

No direct quotes as usual...

Honestly Foster, don't even bother posting this rubbish. I'm sick to death of reading 'insider' stuff - especially when it's awful stuff in the Sun/Mirror/Mail/Express etc

Kevin Keegan's first major signing of the summer is in danger of getting caught up in a hopeless tangle with the news that Real Mallorca are ready to take legal action against Jonas Gutierrez.

According to Sporting Director Nando Pons:

"We are unhappy with the attitude of Jonás Gutiérrez and we will pursue this as a complaint."

"We have claimed €12m (£9.5m) for the unilateral termination of the contract 'without just cause'. Mallorca will defend their interests."

"This case has only just begun," warned club president Vicente Grande. "We will not be quiet and nobody is going to take us for fools. We at least want the €10m that Portsmouth offered us in the winter."

I take it this doesnt stop him physically joining you then?

He'll still be on holiday for that game. His first match for us will be either against Valencia or PSV (I think it's PSV we're playing).

Which is rather lucky after how this is turning out!
