PaulHartman71
Well this is certainly a bigger upgrade than last time! Ariel Gutierrez is an Argentine regen who is their top scorer of all time (maybe not for very long if Talajic sees out his career here). Seems like an awful lot of money to sort all this out but it will take us from 60,000 odd to 87,613 which is pretty good. It's understandable too as the likes of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have Beckenbauer Park (108.5K) and Reus Arena (108.3K), whilst Schalke have the Otte Tibulski Park (85.7K) so they obviously want to be able to compete with them. It's perhaps a bit of a shame we couldn't go a bit bigger. As long as this doesn't get in the way of my transfer budgets (which it doesn't seem to have) then I'm not too fussed really
PaulHartman71
July We once again beat Hertha Berlin in the German Super Cup final after losing to them in the German Cup. PaulHartman71
Season 45 (W)olfsburg It's always gonna be downhill if you win the Champions League one year and then don't retain it, but I think overall apart from the Montpellier nightmare we had a pretty good season. Obviously annoying to blow the German Cup to Hertha yet again, but any season where you win 4 trophies has to go down as a pretty good one. Squad part 1, pt 2 GK - Miguel Garcia was ever reliable in goal. DR - The experienced Evandro Leite slotted in as first choice this season, with his performances being consistent throughout the season. DL - Ahmet Guler yet again showed how fit he is by playing the most games of anyone once again. He had another great season at LB. DC - Viktor Budai and Sam Lawrence spent another season together, with Budai impressing more than Lawrence this season. Budai may well leave this summer though as his contract is up next summer and he doesn't wish to renew. DM - Julian Clement was very good at DM again this year. MC - Vincenzo Vardel reclaimed his first choice slot since returning and he put in some very good performances throughout the year, with Nozomu Matsuura still doing well from the bench. AMR - Wolf Bruneel was fantastic again, as you'd expect from the World's Best Player. He ended the season with 25 assists, 11 goals and a whole host of clubs very interested in acquiring his services. AML - Maurice Gutzeit was even better than he was last season, with the tenacious German finishing the season with 36 goals and 19 assists. It is worth noting he did spend a fair few games upfront due to Talajic being injured sometimes. CAM - Ruud Kant was extremely impressive in his debut Wolfsburg season, with many match winning performances coming from the 27 year old Dutchman, as well as 16 goals and 14 assists. ST - Ivan Talajic didn't quite live up to last year due to sustaining a few knocks and injuries now and then, but he still managed to end the season with 48 goals and 11 assists in 38 games, which is still monumentally impressive by anyone's standards. Not too bad a group really. Roma will be a test though and getting top spot won't be easy. PaulHartman71
November Two absolutely huge victories in the Champions League, with the match against Roma especially being a big show of strength on the European stage. Shakhtar really fought hard and when they went 3-2 up I really thought that was it, but to come back and win 4-3 really does show just how good this team is. PaulHartman71
December Stuttgart got smashed as we progress to the next round with no issue. A meaningless match relatively speaking, but a nice win to secure 6 out of 6 for us in the Group Stage. Not the best month in the league. PaulHartman71
April This wasn't an easy set of matches, but we picked up an important 2-1 win at Villa Park, with Talajic scoring two crucial away goals. Villa put us under a lot of pressure in the 2nd leg, but we held out for a 2-2 draw, with another two Talajic goals seeing us through to the Semi Final. We will face long time foes in Europe and the side who smashed us out of the Champions League last season, Montpellier, in what will be a hotly contested two legs. A pretty good month which saw 3 victories and a crucial point away at Bayern. Bayern gave us a huge amount of problems in that match and Ruud Kant's equaliser in the 64th minute prevented us from losing a match which could have costed us the title. It's ours to lose now, we have a winnable game against Stuttgart next, but the last game of the season is a huge game and potential title decider at home to Schalke. It is ours to lose at this point, but we've got German Cup Semi Final to worry about too, so it will certainly be a tense month.

PaulHartman71
May A huge win against Paderborn puts us into the German Cup final with Dusseldorf. Fingers crossed we can finally win it again. So once again we came up massively short against Montpellier in the Champions League. In yet another first leg against them we got battered, failed to score an away goal and were as good as out without any kind of chance of bringing it back in the 2nd leg. We had to go all out in the 2nd leg much like last year (where we failed to even score 1 goal let alone anymore). It looked like the same thing would happen in the home leg this time but we managed to get a goal in the 26th minute after Vandel stuck in a sweetly chipped ball to Kant in the area who smashed it home to make it 1-0. We went in at half-time with the score 1-0 which I was reasonably pleased with. There was no way we were getting back in the match and even if we did get another one or the 3rd we needed to level things up, if Montpellier got even 1 away goal we were ****ed, and since we were pushing forward heavily they were always going to equalise at some point. 7 minutes into the 2nd half we intercepted a Montpellier attack and after a Kant pass to the right, Bruneel stuck in a scrappy scuffed cross on his left foot which Gutzeit met absolutely brilliantly, with the German's rifling shot smashing into the goal and making it 2-0. It was 2-0 and we were just 1 goal away from levelling the tie, but we just couldn't get that third goal. Every time we went forward we'd get intercepted or the attack would come to nothing. Talajic would get near the box every now and then but he just couldn't get a shot away which was really frustrating. Montpellier whipped in a corner in the 67th minute which our keeper, Garcia, collected without too much of a struggle. He smashed the ball up field to Talajic who took the ball down just inside Montpellier's half with an excellent first touch, before he sweeped past a hapless Montpellier defender as if he wasn't even there. He ran towards the Montpellier box but that same defender had got back and slightly knocked the ball behind Talajic, our star striker turned back to pick up the ball with his back to the goal, some 30 yards away from it. He turned very slightly with the ball and before he was even facing the goal he swung his right foot and smashed the ball out of frustration and desperation. The Montpellier keeper dived to try and keep it out but within a split second it had already flew into the top right hand corner of the net. This goal is/was possibly my favorite goal in the entire save. It might not be the best goal (though it was great) or the most important, but more for the sheer scale of it. I went into this 2nd leg with absolutely no expectations from it, even at 1-0 and 2-0 I didn't really have any hope for us to get back in the tie. It really didn't look like we were going to get a 3rd - so when this went in it really was a genuine shout "OHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!" out loud at your laptop moment. It was Talajic's 52nd goal of the season and possibly the goal that has taken him over Kabongo as being the greatest player I've ever managed. But the game, nor the tie, wasn't won yet. It was all set up for Montpellier to steal a late goal and break our hearts after the comeback of all comebacks and it came in the 88th minute, as a Montpellier player broker through our defence to meet a cross and head home. But it was ruled out for offside. A huge let-off and relief. And so it went to extra-time. A move started just 1 minute before the end of the first half, with substitute Matsuura in the middle of the oppositions half, he passed it sideways to Kant who dribbled past a defender to just outside the centre of their box before meeting Talajic inside it, Talajic cut inside across the goal with his right foot before absolutely smashing it home into the bottom right corner to make it 4-0 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate. There was still plenty of time for a Montpellier equaliser though. They looked to break from one of our free-kicks, but Matsurra intercepted and hit it out to Talajic who was on the right wing, he cut inside and hit in a fairly aimless cross with his left foot into the box, but this cross was absolutely hammered at by Wolf Bruneel who due to the keeper going for the cross almost had an open goal to aim at. He didn't miss. It was 5-0 on the night and we were through. We will face Barcelona in the final, which will, of all places, be held at Wembley. Our penultimate league match came just 3 days after the 120 minutes of madness against Montpellier, with many of our players feeling quite tired and mentally exhausted. We went 2-0 down early on which was a bit of a shock to the system, but I think due to our massive comeback over the two legs with Montpellier I still always thought we would come back and win or draw against Stuttgart. Vandel's goal early in the 2nd half reasserted this - and even though it took until the 80th minute for Wolf Bruneel to make it 2-2, I still believed we'd go on and win it or at least hold onto the point, I never saw Stuttgart getting the 89th sucker punch winner that they got. It was a huge blow. But we went into the Schalke match on the final day knowing that all we had to do was win and we'd be champions again. Easy. It wasn't easy. Much like the Stuttgart game we went behind in the first half by 2 goals, but Ivan Talajic wasn't going to let our party be spoiled and in the 63rd minute he made it 2-1 and the comeback was on. We had half an hour to get 2 goals, win the match 3-2 and claim our 5th Bundesliga in a row. But the goals never came. THE STREAK............................... IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PaulHartman71
German Cup Final My word this was a horrible match to watch We went 1-0 up from a penalty in the first half, but Dusseldorf came back to make it 2-1 and I thought were done for, until Gutzeit equalised extremely late on to take it to extra-time. It was a stalemate in the extra half hour and I was having Deja Vu of last season where we lost it on a shoot-out. Thankfully this time we didn't
PaulHartman71
Kabongo and his Morecambe side had no problem getting past Colchester United in the Semi Final. They're going to Wembley for a winner takes all show down with Forest Green!
PaulHartman71
Champions League final Champions League finals are never easy - this match at Wembley was much the same. It was a very even game for the most part, with neither side really dominating, but in games like this you hope your best players will come alive and pull off a MOTM performance to win you the game. Ivan Talajic did exactly that and his brace secured us with a massive win. We've now won 2 Champions League's in 3 years.
PaulHartman71
Just 2 days later at the very same location where we were crowned European champions, it was the turn of Morecambe and Paterne Kabongo to fight for promotion to League 1. Could this be the turning point for Kabongo's managerial career?! Oh. Oh dear...
