Season 41 (W)olfsburg

f8f77874f73aba29ad1e20027ba3f9bc.png

I don't think it was an overly poor first season at the club despite the board being on the verge of sacking me at one point. It wasn't great by any means of course and we should've done better in the German Cup, as well as Europe, but we did have some difficult draws in Europe and we did put in a good challenge for the title at least.

Squad pt 1,pt 2

GK - Guillame Bresson was actually my keeper at Toulouse for a few years ago way back when, before I sold him on for a profit to Wolfsburg. He's still here and at 33 he's still a good quality keeper - I think we could do better though and since I have a lot of money I will be replacing him in the summer.

DR - Rainer GroB joined me from Villarreal ironically he actually ended up getting more games here than he did for me last season in Spain. He had a pretty good season at RB really.

DL - Joseph Boateng was here when I arrived and he's another familiar face as he was with me for many years at Toulouse before I sold him to Zenit. At 29 he finds himself at Wolfsburg having moved here a few years back. He's a fairly good LB and had a reasonable season for us.

DC - Our CB partnership was Scott Caldwell and Kai Reese. Kai Reese has been at Wolfsburg since he was a kid and the 27 year old is a solid part of the back four. Caldwell was signed from Chelsea in the summer by me and is someone I've actually tried signing before at previous clubs but never managed. He's a solid Scottish defender and did well with Reese.

DM - Tresor Mutumbo is a talented German DM who has been at the club for a while. The 30 year old had a very good season, but he wants to leave and his contract is up next summer, so it looks like he may well be leaving - I'll be able to get someone younger in to replace him though so maybe it's the best move for both parties.

MC - Guilermo Vera was signed for £12M in the summer and the 30 year old Argentine had a good first year, although he's attracting some interest and may leave in the summer. Hopefully he doesn't.

AMR - Dieter Borges is a 23 year old, who like Kai Reese, came through Wolfsburg's youth system. He's a decent young winger and did well this season, although I could probably get someone better in to replace him.

AML - Maurice Gutzeit did very well for the first half of the season before being sold for £40M in January. Lucas Fabozzi replaced him and whilst he didn't come too close to being as good as his predecessor, he still did alright.

CAM - Nico Konig is a 33 year old experienced CAM who has been at Wolfsburg for over a decade. He had a very good season and was one of our best players this season.

ST - Silvje Cujuric was signed for £25M and did very well to score 22 goals and 8 assists in the 24 games he managed to play. He does seem quite injury prone though - and with a lot of sides interested in him this summer, I may well cash in on a decent profit and get someone more reliable in.

Great first season at Wolfsburg, hopefully you can go one better next year. And well done for getting so far through this challenge. I've followed many alphabet challenges on this forum over the years, but I can't recall anyone ever completing it - but I'm starting to believe you're going to see this one right through . KUTGW

Not long left to go now! Although it might take me a while to win the last few leagues I want to win, but only because it feels like I have to win them all to "complete" it properly :D

Summer Transfer Window

So I was actually given a huge transfer budget this summer of just under £90M which I thought was pretty crazy, especially compared to the sort of transfer budgets I was getting at Villarreal despite being doing really well in La Liga and Europe. Wolfsburg's Dzeko Arena does hold 65K though so I'm sure that has something to do with it and I did sell about £120M worth of players last season, so maybe that helped too.

ebfbc940fbcab19d2e9a1459f18f17e5.png

This summer also saw some players leave. Silvje Curjuric left for £42M to join my old side Juventus, this is actually a record as it's the highest amount of money I've received for anyone in my entire time as a manager. He was a talented striker but a bit injury prone and not worth that money for me at all - I cashed in. I was delighted to be able to get £21M from PSG for Vera, the 30 year old was a good player but I was delighted to make a £9M profit on a player that was easily replaceable. Tresor Mutombo was not someone I wanted to sell, but his contract was up next year and he wanted out, so he had to go - Sevilla got him for just under £11M which is a steal. Michael Igwe was on the fringes of the first team last season, he wanted first team football and his contract was also expiring, so off he went for £10M to Roma.

2121ca7d313eaf874c19bfc3f12c089e.png

£30M is an awful lot for a CB, but the Hungarian 24 year old, Viktor Budai, is a very talented one and I had money to burn. Mohamed Hajji is a fantastic 22 year old Dutch CAM who can also play ST - he was a steal for £27M and I dread to think the profit I could make on him if I ever ended up selling him on. Vincenzo Vandel is a talented 22 year old Portuguese lad who we stole away from Porto - he's a great central midfielder and will replace Vera with ease. Ivan Talajic is our new striker, the 23 year old German scored 27 Bundesliga goals for Stuttgart last season, if he can score that many for us this season then he'll be a huge bargain. Rob Kendall was not my first choice Goalkeeper signing, in-fact he wasn't even my first choice Goalkeeper signing from Man City. Man City's 1st choice is Timo Gottel, the German keeper who won the Champions League with me at Toulouse - I was hoping to reunite with him as he's possibly the best keeper I've ever coached, but unfortunately they didn't want to sell - so instead I took their 2nd choice Academy lad who is now 25 and itching for first team football. Rinat Sagyndyk was signed to give competition for left back and centre back. Julian Clement is a strong 25 year old French DM who should slot straight into our team to replace Mutumbo. Ken Bloemen is a promising Belgian right winger who is just 19 years old - I felt really cheeky and quite bad stealing him away from Standard Liege at such a cheap price, but oh well, can't complain :D

Just the one fixture this month as we had an early German Cup match. Thankfully we made short work of Wiesbach.

A strong start to the season, save for the relatively heavy loss suffered at the hands of Bayern. Elsewhere though we've looked very good, with the 3-0 Dortmund win being the most impressive result out of the others, even if it was the lowest scoring win.

It's a big relief to only be behind Bayern by 1 point despite the loss to them.

A good set of results with wins against Greuther Furth and Hamburg.

We're top of the league!!!

We've been given a much better group of Salzburg, PSV and Real Madrid this season. We haven't been great though, as we only just beat RB Salzburg and could only draw in Eindhoven.

We're in an okay position, but PSV could overtake us if they beat RB Salzburg in their double-header and we don't beat Real Madrid in either of our games.

Kabongo is finally employed again as he takes over at recently relegated League 1 side, Luton Town, who sacked their manager after a disappointing start to the season.

Hamburg were a real nuisance and despite our dominance of the match we just couldn't score against them in normal time. Thankfully we managed to break them down in extra-time and Ivan Talajic managed to grab the all important winner to put us through.

A pretty dismal defeat in Madrid, with Talajic's consolation the only positive.

We'll be under a fair bit of pressure if PSV win their next game with whipping boys Salzburg and we lose to Madrid again. Hopefully we can get at least a point.

This month was full of goals. The Frankfurt game was end to end stuff and I thought we'd blown it when we went 4-3 down, but we managed to get an absolute last gasp penalty to steal a point. We also beat Paderborn and Schalke this month, with the later performance being especially pleasing. We couldn't beat Hoffenheim despite being 2-0 up at half-time which was a bit disappointing.

It's neck and neck stuff up the top of the table now, but we're at least ahead by a point for now.

We managed to get a point at home to Madrid and won comfortably in Salzburg.

This puts us in a great position going into our final game with PSV, as all we need to do is avoid defeat to progress to the next phase of the competition.

It looked like it was going to be a great month but then we managed to slip up at Hertha. A real annoyance as when we went ahead so early I thought we'd smash them.

We are thankfully still top. Bayern are having a relatively slow start by their impeccable standards, but it's still looking extremely tight this season with Schalke and Mainz still right up there too.

A resounding win to see us through the next round in the German Cup. Pretty sure this is the point we were eliminated last season, so we're already making progress :D

A comfortable 3-0 win against PSV - never in doubt! :brock:

We will play Montpellier in the 1st Knockout Round - not the best draw, but not the worst either.

A good start to the month but we annoyingly slipped up at Regensburg.

We thankfully still end 2055 top of the Bundesliga, with Bayern now just 2 points behind us.

A pretty good month purely because we managed to beat Bayern at home, which is a massive 3 points in the title race. It was just a shame we lost at Dortmund away - but it didn't help that the Dortmund game was just 3 days later tbf.

This now puts us 4 points clear of Bayern, although Schalke aren't going away quietly are now up to 2nd and just 2 points behind us. This is sure to be a very close title run in.

February

It was a really nervy first leg. We went ahead early but Montpellier equalised before half-time. I think they were happy with the away goal and neither side in the second half looked too convincing offensively. We know we will have to score in Montpellier to get through now. It will be tough - but it is doable.

eb644f7cb9bb93177ce537b20143125e.png

It was beginning to look like a pretty slow month, with three 1-1 draws in games we'd ideally win, we very nearly lost to Hamburg which would've been awful, whilst we only got a goal against Mainz through a penalty. But the Frankfurt game at the end of the month was just something else. We were 6-0 up at half-time ffs :D I'm really not sure what happened. It was a combination of us having a great game and Frankfurt just falling apart. Done absolute wonders for our goal difference though.

Despite slipping up 6 points this month we are still ahead of Bayern and 1st place - but there's no more room for errors and mistakes from now on if we want to win the title.

Awesome that this is still going. Hope you can hang on and win the title with Wolfsburg.

March/April

We absolutely hammered Schalke 5-0 to reach the German Cup Final. A real disaster for a Schalke side who have looked good this season - great news for us though.

d65dc4fea2d20a5ace18000a9c511fa2.png

We went into this match needing to score to progress - I could never have imagined we'd have scored 4 and won this comfortably though. One of our best performances of the entire season.

f5c643e02d1dd6f376947c4f79123a25.png

The match against Roma - not so much. We were outclassed by a brilliant Roma side and lost 5-1, which basically eliminated us. We did at least manage a home win to restore some dignity.

6bf3f9ca8ae1ff53c9c4744bb327788e.png

A lot of matches to cover here due to my **** up of not saving March properly. We slipped up 3 times with three 2-1 defeats against Schalke, Kaiserslautern and Stuggart. These defeats were hardly ideal in a title run in - but did we manage to stay on top?

6295e7c8ac9ec963a90bbbd771fe29a8.png

Just. We lead Bayern only on goal difference. Our final game of the season is away to 13th place Freiburg, whilst Bayern face 17th place Osnabruck also away.

A resounding victory to confirm our Bundesliga win in style.

c1bc2cd0e705769fb6d2f91c2049c192.png

It went right to the wire with Bayern winning too, but it was ultimately our big goal difference that saw us end as champions. That 7-1 win over Frankfurt and 5-0 over Schalke last month certainly went a long way to making this happen.

221b3411719d425306651706b8079b6b.png

This was a nervy match as despite being heavy favorites I was worried we'd bottle it or not be up for it after winning the title. We were much the better side but just couldn't score for ages and I really worried it would be of one of those games - but the jammy Koln goal never came. Kai Reese headed in from a corner on the hour mark and then Lucas Fabozzi fired a nice low **** in the bottom corner to give us the win and secure an unexpected domestic double.

It's that time once again! There's only one 'X' team available - and it's Xanthi of Greece! But will I get lucky and get the job in my first summer since winning the Bundesliga?!

Xerez not available?

9 on Wolfsburg.

I thought that I saw them as a playable team at one point in the game, but I think I might have imagined it as it seems Xerez suffered real life bankruptcy which put them quite far down the Spanish system.

You're amazing that you made better in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, I would be perfectly wait to see who will be the best German team in history.:)

How's the Luton getting a new manager?

£1 for Xanthi, of course. There's only the "X" that can make them lucky.:D

Xanthi winning the Greek CL playoff essentially kept their manager in his job which was the main reason I'm still at Wolfsburg. I was hoping maybe their manager would get a move to another club or something but that didn't happen - so (hopefully just) one more season at Wolfsburg it is :brock:

Season 42 (W)olfsburg

488cdcc77dbfaa2af1c19a7d75629c33.png

If you'd offered me a domestic double at the start of the season, despite the money we spent, I would've ripped your hands off. We did spend a lot of money but still a fantastic achievement and job done in German nonetheless. I'm hoping we can push on and challenge in the Champions League next season since I won't be off to Xanthi in the immediate future.

Squad pt 1,pt 2

GK - Rob Kendall was a new signing in the summer and despite costing £16.5M he proved a shrewd bit of business.

DR - Marc Yannick Broker has been at the club since he was a kid and this season he got a chance to be a first teamer. The 19 year old right back did well enough to warrant not needing to get a bigger and more expensive player in.

DL - The experienced German, Rinat Sagyndyk, was a new signing in the summer and the 31 year old was a great addition to the squad.

DC - Kai Reese continued at CB with his new partner, the £32M signing, Viktor Budai. Reese had the better season but Budai still proved a solid partner in what proved to be a title winning defence.

DM - Julian Clement was a new signing in the summer and for £11M was unreal. He was an absolute rock and one of the first names on the team sheet for every game.

MC - Vincenzo Vardel cost £23.5M, but even at that price he was a steal. The 22 year old is a brilliant central midfielder and has attracted huge interest - I'll be surprised if we keep him this summer as whilst we're German champions, we're not one of the better leagues at the moment. If he wants to go I'll let him - providing I make a tasty profit. The only stumbling block (if you'll pardon the pun) could be that he broke his foot late in the season which means he'll be out of action for 3 months - so I'm unsure if he can pass a medical or not during the summer. We'll have to see.

AMR - Ken Bloemen was a cheap signing at around £8M. The 19 year old Dutch lad did well at RW - I'm not even convinced that's his best position though, as I think he could do well centrally too.

AML - Lucas Fabozzi didn't hugely impress since signing in January last season, but he was far better in his first full season at the club.

CAM - Mohammed Hajji was signed for £27M in the summer and the 23 year old did very well this season, with 24 goals and 15 assists in 45 games. He's attracting big interest from a range of clubs, including Roma - so I expect if he wants to go he will leave to, but only if the price is right.

ST - Ivan Talajic had big shoes to fill when he signed for £19.25M - but he filled them just fine. He ended the season with 31 goals and 12 assists in 34 games, which helped us to win the Bundesliga. The only issue was that he broke his foot in late February which put him out for the rest of season. Let's hope that was just a one off and doesn't affect him too much.

Just read all of this, has taken me a few days but loved it all, what a career you've had, be great to see how it finishes.

Think i'm going to have to start my own Alphabet/Journeyman challenge myself after reading this!

That's great to hear. Would be interesting to see how that goes as the Alphabet challenges on here seem to have dried up a bit as of late!

You're amazing that you made better in the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg, I would be perfectly wait to see who will be the best German team in history.:)

How's the Luton getting a new manager?

£1 for Xanthi, of course. There's only the "X" that can make them lucky.:D

Luton hired regen Gareth Wood.

It was a really tight affair that ultimately went to penalties, but I was pleased to pick up another Super Cup trophy.

A comprehensive win to start our German Cup defence.

A great win against Bayern on the first day of the season, but that has now been overshadowed by losing 4-3 at Gladbach despite being 3-0 up at half-time. A really devastating loss.

Transfers

Just clocked I forgot to post the summer transfers. It was a busy summer with some huge moves happening. We got £60M for young CM Vincenzo Vardel from Lazio - a huge amount of money and if I hadn't sold Mohamed Hajji for £65M to Roma in July, it would've been a record deal. We also sold GK Rob Kendall to Montpellier for a big £35M. Joseph Boateng wanted to leave and was on huge wages so I let him go for £10M with 1 year left on his contract.

dc78f461093ded3707a599952ffa5fa5.png

Wolf Bruneel is a very talented 25 year old Belgian RW who was signed more because we could improve rather than to replace anyone. Nozomu Matsuura is a 27 year old German CM who was signed to replace the departing Vandel - he's a bit more defensive minded than Vandel but still very talented nonetheless as you would expect at that price. Paul Diallo is a 30 year old CAM signed to replace Hajji - a lot of money for a 30 year old but it's worth it for the tenacious Diallo. Sam Lawrence is a CB signed from Lazio to add defensive depth and quality to the squad - we also signed Olaf Steinmetz to fit in at RB and general defensive roles, but he broke his leg on arrival so may well miss most of the season now :D We also signed Miguel Garcia who will be our new first choice keeper - this is the 26 year old's first experience in European football but he does look a real prospect. Ahmet Guler was signed to add quality to the LB position.

We didn't get the best CL group, as we got a tough 3rd seed in Shakhtar and one of the best sides in Europe, who knocked us out last season - Roma. We've actually started quite well though, with a late comeback win at home to Shakhtar and a decent 1-1 draw with Roma.

Due to Roma failing to be Panathinaikos we've taken an early lead in the group, which is pretty great really.

A very dominant month in the league. There's certainly not much more you can ask for than these kind of results!

Top of the league

Osnabruck were swatted away like an unwanted fly at a BBQ as we barely broke a sweat progressing to the 3rd Round.

Panathinaikos proved a stronger test but we still managed to get the 3 points we wanted.

We're still top of the group and providing we avoid defeat against Roma and win our other matches we can top the group. Easier said than done though :D

Dortmund gave us a tough game at their place and we could only manage a draw - we made up for it with resounding victories over Koln and Paderborn though.

With 10 games played we lead the table by 4 points (plus a superior goal difference).

great start to the season, whats the goals scored record for a Bundesliga season?

Bayern got 105 in 2051/51. Would be nice to top that. They did only draw twice and lose once that season though - so will have to be a very good season to top that!

November

A really strong month in the Champions League - we slipped up in Ukraine which put huge pressure on us going into the Roma game, but we thankfully beat them 1-0 in a tight game to secure 1st place in the group.

This should give us a decent opponent in the Round of 16.

A perfect month in the league as we win 3 out of 3, with 3 clean sheets too.

We're now 7 points clear of Bayern and things are looking good.

Another very good month in the league, with only Stuttgart away providing us with anything resembling a test. The demolition of Dusseldorf was pretty enjoyable tbh.

Where have you got in mind for 'X'? I can only think of Xanthi FC in Greece or Xerez in Spain, and the latter are in a regional division so only playable if you load a custom database. Either that or you loosen the rules a little and allow Neuchatel Xamax as an option?

At this point it will only be Xanthi in Greece as Xerez are unplayable in my game.

Our backup LB and general utility man Rinat Sagyndyk left for Real Madrid for £12.5M.

I signed a few backup options, including young 17 year old CAM, John Mohammed, 19 year old LB, Steve Carroll and experience 32 year old striker, Kadeem Miggins.

Duisburg were no match for us in the German Cup, as we won 4-0 to progress to the Semi Final. We will play Bayern Munich which should be our first real test in the competition - hopefully we can win and go onto retain the cup.

7c1991efb99b367f2d2f242eba4c8ffe.png

Just the one match this month in the league and we very nearly dropped points - if it wasn't for two late goals from Demir and Bruneel we would've only drawn 2-2.

We're 9 points clear with a game in hand on the now 2nd place Schalke.

That goals scored record looks pretty much in reach right now. Only need 43 goals in 16 matches to break it. Great job!
