[FM15] The Hart Chronicles - Volume I: Paul Hart's Alphabet Career

A few transfers happened. We lost Marcel de Koning to West Ham for £6M - it was too much to down for the club and doubled their record fee received. Hakim Yildirim and Abdulkadir Yakir were also two departures that were first team players - we got good money for both though.

Craig Hooper and Michel van der Vlugt join from Derby and Ajax to be our new CB partnership - both with drastically different transfer fees, but both solid signings hopefully. Ralf Uhlke joins from Hertha Berlin, he's an exciting 25 year old German CAM who should do well for us this season - this frees up Peter Mulder to play CM with Yakar leaving.

A pretty easy 3rd round victory against Young Boys - it really was men against boys at times. Ralf Uhlke scored a brace on his competitive debut to give us a huge advantage during the away leg. We came back to Holland and won 3-0 again with Kevin van Hoeven grabbing a magnificent hat-trick.

An inconsistent start to the league this year. We won away at Vitesse on the opening day but then slumped to two consecutive defeats - a disappointing 2-0 loss at home to Feyenoord and then an even worse 1-0 loss at AZ. We've managed to regain some loss ground though by beating Ajax 2-0 at home and then winning 3-1 against De Grafschaaf.

We did well to get a draw as easy as Metalurg tbf. They looked alright in the first leg which was quite a close affair, which saw our 3rd choice back-up RB, Rodrigo Smaldone score one of the best goals I've ever seen on the game from 35 yards - pretty crazy stuff. The first leg also saw a disastrous injury to Kevin van Hoeven who was put out for 3-4 months. We were out for blood and revenge in the away tie and we got just that - we put 4 past them to confirm our place in the Group Stage.

I'm not sure what division vv Haaglandia play in but they're probably not going to be making the step up to professional level any time soon. I put a second string side out against them and we still destroyed them 7-1, with Nathan Poppen and Adam both getting two goals each - to say it was comfortable would be an understatement.

A good month in the league saw us avoid defeat at home to PSV, whilst also picking up good wins against NEC and Fortuna Sittard - it was especially pleasing to see Michiel Wever filling in for van Hoeven well with 3 goals in 3 games.

Go Ahead Eagles are having a Leicester-like start considering they very nearly went down last year.

Wow. What a win! Wolfsburg away was probably the one game I straight up wrote off in terms of getting anything when the groups were drawn. We went 1-0 up early on but before half-time we were 2-1 down. Wever's early strike in the second half forced an own goal from their keeper to make it 2-2, which left me pretty content with a point. But Ralf Uhlke, our very own German, popped up on German land to rattle home an 81st minute winner against all odds.

It's pretty cool now that I'm at the point in the game where ex-players I managed at certain clubs are actually becoming the manager of those clubs

Sarabia in charge of Getafe

This brought back some fond memories of my time at Getafe so I had a quick look to see what some of my other ex-Getafe boys are up to.

Seamus Coleman is still a fitness coach at Juve from when I hired him, with Fellaini also still there as Head of Youth Development. Dries Mertens is still a coach at Man United from when I hired him when I was there. Lucas is a fitness coach for Atletico Madrid. Oriol Rosell is managing Cadiz.

Pedro Guijarro, a youth academy player who could play on the RW or upfront, is now 37 years old and still playing, turning out for Serbian side Mladost.

Carlos Robles is now 32 and turns out for Alcorcon of the Spanish 2nd Div B. He left Ipswich soon after I did, joining Spurs for a season before actually returning to Getafe. He spent 6 years there before ending up getting released and snapped up by Alcorcon where he's been ever since.

A few years after I left Ipswich, the other lad I brought with me from Getafe, left winger Juan Manuel Guadalupe, also returned home to Getafe. He's spent the last 9 years there and is still playing for them today at 32 - though appears to play for the 'B' side now.

A nice 2-0 win against FC Emmen in the 3rd round, we have a tricky away tie in the next round though against FC Utrecht.

dc29d6bcf7b2c3a66cfe2e3f605f3bc9.png

Wever's been in fine form in the Europa League, he's grabbed 5 in 2 games as we've won at home to Legia and Dundee without any trouble at all.

A 3-0 home win and a 3-0 away loss. Hmm. Meh.

Strange to see both Heerenveen and GA Eagles still up there - both almost went down last season. We do have some games in hand though and there's plenty of time left - I guess with the top 3 spots getting CL spots this season, everyone is going all out for dat CL money.

I always find it so weird how they seem to let the Gentleman's Agreement slide in FM with regens. England are currently taking full advantage of it. Their first choice RB is called Mirko Prtenjak, who was born a Serb and snapped up by Arsenal when he was very young. They've also got a goalkeeper called 'Alan' who was born in Brazil and nicked by United at a young age. And by far the best one is this guy - a Brazilian striker who Chelsea stole at a young age by the name of 'Zulu' :D :D

A very poor month as we lost both games in the league which was made worse by the fact that they were both home games.

A poor away loss to Dundee threatened to derail our campaign. I was quite worried going into the Wolfsburg game as we were in awful form and a loss could've really messed things up for us but it actually turned out to be a comfortable game and we won 3-0 with no real difficulty.

OFI Crete. They start the game in the 2nd tier of Greece I think. They've established themselves as a major player in Greece during my save as they've won 4 Greek titles and regularly finish in the top 3.

£4 on Olympiakos. I think your job in NAC Breda is now not insecure, so this team really need to give a push to the top.

So the Olympiakos boss got sacked.

Despite poor form in the league I was pretty happy at NAC Breda as I had just secured passage to the knockout round of the Europa League. But this was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.

Thankfully they didn't do a Napoli and did actually offer me the job after I'd stuck my neck out on the line. Not sure how or why they think they can challenge for the title given the disastrous start they've had to the league, but they do have some games in hand I guess.

Congratulations to Maw74, sherwinriga, Bitner, apchivers and SounessTash - 5 winners from one round has surely got to be a record. Maw74 continues his 3 bet winning streak, whilst sherwinriga's win sees him enter double figures. Bitner is straight on the upper end of the leader board with a debut winning bet. Meanwhile right at the top of the table - SounessTash makes some ground back on the leader, apchivers, who will be grateful that he guessed correctly too and is now up there with £45.

Commiserations to everyone else - especially LeedsUnitedFan2 whose horrible losing streak continues, as well as ExeChris who edges further and further closer to the dreaded red of bankruptcy.

December

It was a pretty sad end to my NAC Breda career - a poor away loss to Heracles, then brief joy as we beat Volendam away from home. But it ended in a sad display at home to FC Utrecht, tbf the deal to join Olympiakos was pretty much done at that point as I officially left the day after - it was still sad to go out on a defeat though after a relatively enjoyable spell at the club. I left NAC Breda 7th in the Eredivisie, still with a few games in hand - they can definitely still reach the European places with that squad and possibly go on a nice Europa League run. Dani Carvajal has replaced me so they'll have to see how he gets on.

Adam was starting far less this season due to the arrival of Ralf Uhlke at CAM, but he still managed 2 goals and 3 assists in his primarily substitute appearances. Overall though his time at Olympiakos has been a success, whilst he did well at United and Juve occasionally, that was partly thanks to having far superior team-mates to most of the teams in the league. At NAC Breda that was not the case and especially last season he did not particularly look too far out of his depth. We'll see how he does in Greece as you'll see from the screenshot below that I have already confirmed his signing for January.

December in Greece

My first game in charge of my new side came at home to Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League. It was a pretty meaningless game actually as the previous manager had made a mare of the group meaning by this stage there was nothing I could do to get us to progress - I'm assuming a poor showing in this competition played a part in him getting the sack. For me it will probably be a blessing in disguise in getting the side back up the league table as I wont have to worry about extra European games.

So in the end we finish behind Slovan Bratislava and pretty funnily my old side Ipswich who stormed the group

A pretty good start to my campaign in the Superleague though. It was a nervy start at home to AELK which tbf we didn't really deserve much from but a penalty gave us a point. We then pulled off a comeback victory against fierce rivals AEK with Isak Englund popping up with a huge late winner. We then rounded off the year and the month with a very comfortable 5-2 home win to PAOK.

So all in all things aren't looking too bad all things considered. I'm still not sure this title challenge is happening considering how far ahead Panthrakikos are. I actually mis-read them and thought they were Panathinaikos, but in turns out they're not and the traditionally massive Greek side have slumped in my game having not won the title in 16 years. They've not finished higher than 4th in 10 years.

Meanwhile Panthrakikos have had an amazing time in my save. They started the save as an average mid-table side with no previous league title wins to talk about whatsoever, but in the last 10 years they've won 7 of them, including the last 5 in a row. I'm not sure if it's come about as a result of a tycoon takeover but studying their past transfer seasons - their net spend has never really been that high, even in recent seasons where they've spent £30/40M they've taken that much in anyway.

It's been a while since I conducted a good old fashioned raid of a previous club. Apart from Adam - I also picked up defensive midfielder Saulo, central attacking midfielder Ralf Uhlke and left winger/striker Michiel Wever. This cost me a combined fee of around £5M. A decent package deal for a group of players who will improve this Olympiakos side.

Our 3rd round Greek Cup matches with 2nd tier side Trikala were not easy at all, with both of our games in either leg coming late on in the game. We did enough however to ensure progression to the Quarter Final where we will face mid-table side Platanias.

We had a lot of league games this month, didn't really get a lot of points from them tbh. We got 8 points from a possible 18 which really isn't challenging for the title material. A disappointing loss to a Panathinaikos side that are a shadow of their former self. We really should have beaten Ast. Tripolis and we were 3-0 up as well, so to blow that was a hugely gutting result. It was also gutting to lose away to Panthrakikos as we were 2-0 down for much of the game then late on we got right back into it and made it 2-2, but then we blew it again anyway.

We're a distant 3rd now as OFI and Panthrakikos will battle it out for the title by the looks of it with just 10 games remaining now.

A decent first leg as we win 2-1 away to Platanias, we should have enough to come out of the home leg with a place in the Semi Final, but I don't want to get too ahead of myself with that one.

2c7fdade3a5c23aaa0f536180591ee03.png

An awful result away to Iraklis, we equalised through Adam's first Olympiakos goal in the 76th minute, but then some horrendous defending threw away the lead again. We beat Kerkrya 4-0 without any trouble at all. I wasn't sure what to expect from the OFI game, but I was hoping we could beat them to try and claw our way back into the hunt for 2nd. We got a point and tbf we could've won it if we'd taken our chances, not the worst result all things considered. We've since beat Xanthi in another very comfortable home game.

I don't think we can catch OFI but we could well put some distance between us and the pack of teams behind us as we could feasibly win more or less all of our remaining league games.

Oh dear. It's all kicking off now. Marivaldo, our top scorer and best striker, is kicking off cause he wants a move to Gremio in his native Brazil. I agreed to it as thought it would be at the end of the season, but I've since clocked that the Brazilian transfer market is open so they would acquire him instantly. I'm not selling him mid-season when I can't get a replacement in ffs :D

We won the 2nd leg 2-1 too which gives us a place in the Semi Final. We've drawn currently 11th place Kerkrya which is a pretty good draw for a Semi Final, but by no means a forgone conclusion.

We're not catching the front runners but it was still a perfect month in the league as we won all 3 of our games, including two on the road which is nice. Karl Holmberg was in fine form.

As I remember, Greek league has some weird system with championship play-off, so actually you still have a chance to move up (or down :D )

We struggled against Kerkyra like we struggled against a lot of our cup opponents, but we have managed to reach the final thanks to a great comeback in the away leg.

e3ee18503322a11896f79f1a5be1a053.png

Not the best end to the season really - but the most important result was once again beating our rivals AEK Athens at home, with Marivaldo getting a brace including a 90th minute winner. In all honesty once I found out there was going to be European playoffs I wasn't even thaaat bothered about the loss as it didn't change much.

afba69cf206795a3ebc1e82e17a7fb08.png

Now see I thought this play-off was going to be to do with the Europa League qualifying spots again - so from 3rd to 6th or something. But actually it turns out this is for the Champions League instead - so we could actually make the Champions League despite finishing 3rd.

However - this is where things get a bit complicated...

386da6fa09d74fdee9ce90c7828a62d5.png

So we play each side twice and have 6 games in total. But wait what's that? OFI already have 4 points? We already have a point? At first I thought this was a bug but then realised that OFI probably had some sort of advantage as a result of finishing so far ahead (fair enough I guess) but I still didn't really get how they'd worked this out so I searched the Greek Superleague on Wikipedia...

b9c8256a20eb17f8039b293590736073.png

This is has to be one of the most complicated/strange ways to sort things out I've ever seen. Too much maths and division and decimal points for me tbh. The Greeks are famous for maths though so I'm sure it makes sense... :D

Our first of 6 playoff games was technically the most difficult one - away to OFI who finished 12 points above us and consequently started off 3 points ahead of us in the group. I went into this game hugely cautious as they're slightly better than us and if we'd lost it would have surely been curtains for our Champions League hopes.

We went 1-0 down almost instantly and I feared the worst. We thankfully won an (admittedly quite debatable) penalty on the half-hour mark though and Lorenzo stepped up to equalise.

Not much else happened in the rest of the game as I went very defensive to try and hold onto a point. Until the 86th minute when we managed to win a free-kick in their half. I think OFI were still trying to counter and get all 3 points as they didn't have a massive amount of guys back for it, we took advantage of this as the ball was headed on and fell right into the path of our 85th minute substitute...none other than Adam himself who calmly controlled it and tucked it home to score a heroic late winner. Absolute scenes! A genuine shout at the laptop in excitement moment. That could well go down as the most important goal he has ever scored if we end up qualifying for the Champions League.

PAOK managed to beat Panathinaikos (who managed to come 5th which is something of a revival for them) which brings the 3 of us level on points, with PAOK slightly ahead on goal difference. There's still 5 games to go but at least now there's 3 of us all on level points so it's anyone's for the taking.

We played OFI once again before our return playoff match, this match was more important because it was the final of the Greek Cup. It was 1-1 in normal time then went to extra time, we won 2-1 in extra-time making it 3-2 and seeing us lift the trophy.

We can be thankful that OFI only drew too which means the table is still neck and neck.

It's looking good, but we do still have a tough away trip to PAOK and OFI to play at home.

Also pretty coo to see Zidane end up in charge at Juve

Season 22 (O)lympiakos

I joined in December so have had about 6/7 months with this lot. It was always going to be an uphill struggle to do much in the league and whilst we weren't great, we should have been happy enough with 3rd place. However, then this mysterious complicated play-off came up and we managed to rally together to qualify for the Champions League. A great achievement in itself. But to also win the Greek Cup was a huge bonus. I don't think we could've won it if we'd had to play Panthrakikos as they're on another level, but we beat OFI which was still a task in itself.

Squad 1, Squad 2

GK - Roberto Constancia is our keeper. 22 year old Dutch lad, not too bad. Had a decent season without being too spectacular.

DR - Paulo Granzotto was our RB - a talented Italian defender but his performances didn't really match his stats or ability.

DL - Jose Pedro is a 26 year old Portuguese LB, was far better than Granzotto despite not looking like it on paper. He's better going forward than he is actually defending though.

DC - Our CB pairing was Gilmar Guarda and Carlos Hugo Vallejo. Guarda did a good job guarding our defence, the 26 year old Brazilian was more impressive than his Spanish counter-part - overall they were a decent partnership for this level.

DM - Lorenzo, the oldest guy in the team but an invaluable one nonetheless. The 34 year old was a pretty good DM although his one downfall was his stamina, he often didn't last the full 90 which isn't great but at his age it's not a surprise - it was a good thing I brought in Saulo as deputy from NAC Breda, though he wasn't fit a lot of the time either through injuries.

MC - Jaime Marinheiro was an okay CM - nothing special really. If I was still here next season this would probably be one of the first positions that I strengthened. I'm not so Marinheiro will probably still be playing next season.

AMR - Frank Gehring on the right wing was one of our best players. The Dutchman was a tricky little winger with a knack for scoring goals every now and then. He ended the season with an impressive 10 assists and 13 goals.

AML - This position was a toss up between the Brazilian Saulo (not the DM I raided from NAC) and Jacob Fager - they traded places a lot, neither were particularly great or found that much form. Fager had 10 assists this season but I'm pretty sure none of them came whilst I was here as he really weren't that great.

CAM - I took Ralf Ulhke with me from NAC Breda and he didn't disappoint. The German was impressive at CAM, whilst he only pulled off 8 assists and 4 goals, he was very good in build up play and stuff that stats don't really show. A key part in a lot of goals. Adam was his deputy and performed okay in his cameo appearances, including his memorable winner against OFI.

ST - Marivaldo was our best player. The Brazilian wasn't quite Rivaldo, but he was good for this level and club. He ended the season with 31 goals and 9 assists from 48 starts - not bad at all. He had a lot of interest from Brazilian sides in February but I told them to **** off as I wasn't selling him outside of the European transfer window. He kept scoring despite being very unhappy. I wish him the best though, hopefully he gets his dream Brazil move in the summer.

It's been a decent spell in Greece for Adam. Whilst he didn't see the same sort of playing time he saw in his first season at NAC Breda, he did see a lot of substitute action. He was pretty decent at times with the odd assist and goal, including his heroic winner in the OFI CL playoff qualification match. He's also now fully trained to be able to play AML, he didn't play there but I might well be able to make use of him there at some point in his career.

Well this has come round a lot quicker than I was expecting! I didn't really plan to leave Olympiakos after 6 months, it just sort of happened. I was going to wait for the Euros in the summer as Portugal had their home tournament, so I thought their manager would definitely get the chop if they had a poor season. In typical host fashion they got a **** easy group of Greece, Denmark and Northern Ireland. So when I noticed a job opportunity pop up I thought I might as well take it, even if it is sort of breaking my semi self-imposed 365 day rule at a club. Ain't nobody got time for that!

Will probably end my good run with this bet but I'm gonna go big and put £20 on PSG.
