Manchester United Thread 2015/16

Recommended Posts

Nick Powell is in the travelling squad for tomorrow, there is 19 going so he might not get in the squad but it would be some comeback if he made something of himself now. The papers were saying he might retire a few months ago. Apparently looking fit and sharp though.

comparing guardiola and giggs is hilarious. ancelotti seems to be people's favourite at the moment, personally think we should do absolutely everything for guardiola, especially if the city stuff has any truth. although i'm sure some of his tactical quirks will wind people up no end as well, except it'll be more entertaining than van gaal's.

We'll win 1-0.

On a side note, Lukaku wouldn't be a bad signing IMO. Good vision, can play quick football, holds the ball up well and a good finisher.

At home to Sheffield United then in the FA Cup 3rd round, pleased with that draw.

It's like the early 90s all over again (except the home draw).

Pleased with that draw too. Hopefully a chance for some kids.

Worse news with Bastian almost certainly getting a 3-match ban by the FA, but can't really complain too much about it. It was stupid (although I never like seeing a player pretending he was shot by an RPG). Bit of a winter break for him after all.

All in all, should be a pretty decent chance for some Pereira action in the next month. Lots of matches, injuries, and now a suspension too.

No. Just play the first team. It has been too long since an FA Cup win. The last time against Millwall I recall watching the final with my brother the day after his wedding (the honeymoon got postponed). He's now got a team of screaming children and he's in a fully blown midlife crisis. How the years fly....

I like that draw, not been to Bramall lane in years so might go to that game.

You're calling the 0-0 at OT already?

Hahahaha :D

Ruined my joke, was waiting for someone to say that we are at home.

66 PL goals in 137 games isn't a bad record. Has played and scored enough to know he can do it in the PL. Problem with buying abroad is that it can take a season or two for them to find their feet.

He'd be Berbatov with less technique/flair and more "hard work" :brock:

What a **** day. My grandma died last night :( Hopefully Manchester United manage to put a slight but temporary dampener on that sad feeling this evening. Won't be easy though. Wolfsburg will be no walk-over, they barely ever lose at home, and I reckon we need to win.

6 years ago today I was in Wolfsburg when we won 3-1 thanks to an Owen hattrick. Would give a lot for that same result tonight.

As good a chance as Owen scoring as anyone in our team atm.

Only one player in our squad tonight has scored more than 10 goals in the Champions League, Bastian Schweinsteiger.

How anybody at the club thought it was a good idea to ship out RVP, Hernandez, Wilson and (to a lesser extent) Falcao & Henriquez and only bringing in a promising Martial is remarkable. Not forgetting Welbeck the year before.

The cheek of including Falcao in that :D Might as well include defenders in that case! ;)

If it means I don't see Fellaini upfront.. i'm including him!

Think we are going to start really fast tonight and create a few chances early on. If we take one we will win by 2/3 but if like against PSV we don't score then it will be another 0-0. Is that good enough for us?

Only if PSV draw or lose

To be fair two years ago his all round game was nowhere near what it is now. He's made real improvements in that area (which as his age and with playing regularly isn't surprising) but I still don't think he's the type of striker we want going forward. Having someone who is so easy to use as a battering ram, even if he has many other talents just invites that kind of football and if there's one thing that would get United fans moaning more than pass-pass-pass it's hoofball. Chelsea with Drogba were a good example of this, aside from the one season under Ancelotti they really just ignored Drogba's other strengths. Bit like England and Crouch actually, took them far too long to figure that out. I think with the players we've signed already (namely Martial and Depay) we need someone who is strong and technical enough to hold up the ball on the ground and quick enough to play in behind. That and they need to be able to score plenty of goals of course.

Do you have any names in particular as to who fits those criteria?

I don't have a scouting team, so whether I do or not doesn't particularly matter.

Really sorry to hear that :(.

Thanks guys. Not had the best of days, so I hope United can put on a good show in a few hours, or at least get the result we need to go through. I expect we need a win since PSV are at home, but if we can get through with a draw, then by all means get the draw, even if it's another 0-0.

If this was a SAF team, even with the exact same football, I don't think a soul would have uttered a thing. Until we crashed out of the CL. A few points off the top spot in the league after 15 matches is hardly a horrible position to be in (although form lately is a concern). Like he always used to say, if we are in the running at the turn of the year, we have a chance.

Of course, if SAF had this squad (though he would never have sold so many strikers), we'd probably be 10 points clear by now. But I also think it's fair to say that so many kids wouldn't have gotten the chance.

Everton don't really use him as a battering ram or play hoofball though, his all round game for them is great now.

What you've described as an ideal striker is basically exactly what Lukaku is this season.

I think Dion confused Lukaku with Benteke. Lukaku fits exactly what he mentioned there and is definitely not a battering ram......the curse of being a physical specimen ;)

Varela getting his first start in such an important game. Pretty risky. Hope it pays off. Otherwise the team picks itself really. Carrick for Fellaini the only real choice I guess, or possible Young for Varela.

Crossing my fingers we pull through...

Tonight's line up. Can see them running rings around the central 3 of Mata, Fellaini and Schweinsteiger. But if the front 4 click for us it has bags of pace and could cause problems. I'll go for 0-0. ;)

Time to smash them 0-0, and win the Champions League with 70% possession and 3rd place in the group stages.

At least that's what I imagine van Gaal is thinking right now.

Everton still play their fair share of long balls up to him, they play more long passes than West Ham etc. that are typically counterattacking teams anyway. I wasn't disparaging about his all round game anyway, in fact I was complimentary. The issue is teams will take the easy way out when they have the option.

Can't see us winning, not helped by all the injuries, our best chance of progressing is hoping CSKA do us a favour.

Schweinsteiger is gonna be done by about 60 minutes.. This game is far too fast for him.

Getting into good positions but Lingard and Memphis keep choosing the wrong option

**** me. Just as i think we are making progress they walk through us to score. Better in attack today and worse in defence. Still we can get back in this, we can get in behind them.
