Martial did well, looks a little bit lightweight which is understandable considering his age but he linked up with those around him really well.

he's quite a bit bigger than i thought he was actually. physicality's not going to be an issue for him at least. it's just learning how to use his body better which will obviously come with experience etc. impressed with him so far, loads more to come.

Awful Shaw injury (without trying to get into the debate and whilst I don't think the defender meant anything malicious its still a horribly reckless challenge and a stonewall penalty and red card, thought the ref had an awful game allround to be honest) and result aside was reasonably pleased with the performance as a whole tonight. Loved the look of Martial and Depay linking up and is surely only going to get better, thought the midfield of Schweinsteiger and Herrera added some much need pace and didn't give PSV a chance to settle especially in the 1st half and Darmian aside (who had his 1st bad game since joining us) the defence looked reasonably solid even after Shaw went off.

Fellaini though was just absolutely useless when he came on and his 1st choice is to go backwards every single time, slowed down numerous attacks and gave PSV the chance to get men behind the ball, also haven't got a clue what Mata was thinking when he was played in by Bastian, the pace on the pass was outstanding and its even on his perferred foot! Oh and would be perfectly content with Valencia never stepping foot onto a pitch wearing a united shirt again, so terribly garbage.

Yeah just read it is a double fracture, hopefully he comes back next season fit and well.

Just seen that Shaw broke his leg. Thought he's probably been your best player so far this season. Heartbreaking for him, was absolutely flying and looking like a real player.

Poor guy, hope it doesn't do too much damage to his career

One of Luton's players had the same injury a couple of seasons ago. His leg was broken in the game on New Year's Day and he made his return as a sub (clearly not match fit, it was only a token gesture) on the final game of the season in May. He then did a full pre-season and was back stronger than ever for the start of the following season in August.

Shaw is a few years younger than our guy was and obviously will have the best medical care money can buy, so with a bit of luck he could be back before the end of the season. Lots of variables though, you just have to pray for the best I guess. Awful to see :(

If he's avoided major ligament damage he'll be back for the business end of the Champions League provided we're still in it.

Also we need to stop taking short corners.

Double fracture is way, way better than tearing ligaments

So you're saying you hate him?

/sid

Terrible evening all around. After that injury I couldn't really care much about the result, although still disappointing we managed to lose. Main thing is I hope Shaw will come back strong. He has a very tough year ahead of him now. It will test him both physically and not least mentally.

Not sure if mentioned earlier, but Larsson had a similar injury and came back pretty good, so here's hoping

Thought this when he was getting ready to come on on Saturday - looks rather more broad shouldered than I thought.

I'm not even arsed about the result. Shaw :(. Hope it's not as bad as first feared!

It all depends on how clean the breaks are. Could be back by feb, or we might not see him till pre season...

My concern is that Shaw isn't the fittest of people. I can see him piling on a lot of weight during his absence.

Shaw's arguably the fittest play in the side (before the leg break) the issue was he wasn't looking after himself well enough initally (poor diet/fitness discipline). Changed that around entirely.

I'd take him being out for the whole season providing he is back to 100% for pre season.

Gutted for Shaw. Terrible terrible injury. :( The worst part is not the healing of the broken bones, it's the fact that the foot becomes immobilized during the re-rehabilitation process and scar tissue grows around the tissues, restricting movement later on. Still, he will have the best care in the world and he has every chance of recovering.

Can't you ban him for that lads? Sure that's been a ban worthy offence in the past.

Pretty sure I've seen at least one mod wish an injury to a player before.

I also called someone out for it once, and someone else took a shot at me for it...

FFS. Came home planning to watch the match having had no news except the starting lineup. Site I'm going to watch it on as a highlights package as well as the full match and I see a warning that graphic content is involved. Found out Luke Shaw's leg got snapped. Can't watch it now. Just horrible. Awful game regardless of the result and how we played that. Don't care how bad or good we played. Just have to wipe that match away.

Anyone who quotes Sid goes on ignore too. This is getting ridiculous that we engage when the solution is so easy.

Shame about Shaw, he is a pace player so this will change his career. He will also balloon a bit so I would aim at mid next season for a return.

Is it confirmed there isn't significant ligament damage? Absolutely gutted for Shaw, he was really starting to hit his stride and look top quality after a stuttered start. Was looking great for England too. Hope he makes it back before the end of the season and this is not the end of the season for him

Not sure if anyone caught Evra's interview after the match? He was interviewed by a beIN Sports guy, talked a few minutes. Usual 'happy with result' and though they were compact and more experienced in CL than City so was confident. Then he added something along the lines of 'it's particularly good for me cause I am a red for life' with a bit of a smirk

Hopefully he comes back as strong as Larsson did.

An interesting bit on BBC sport on players that suffered similar injuries and their recovery time. (of course everyone is different)

194 days: England play Germany in a friendly (26 March, 2016)

212 days: Henrik Larsson's recovery time after a double leg break

218 days: Bryan Oviedo's recovery time after a double leg break

243 days: Final day of the Premier League season (15 May, 2016)

250 days: FA Cup final (21 May, 2016)

252 days: Aaron Ramsey's recovery time after a double leg break

269 days: Euro 2016 begins in France (10 June, 2016)

296 days: Eduardo's recovery time after a double leg break

299 days: Euro 2016 final (10 July, 2016)

I would write him off til next season to allow him a full pre season. Maybe bring him on for a token sub appearance in the final premiership game when we win the league and give him the last minute of the champions league final when we are 4-0 up vs Madrid...

I don't think he needs to be out for 3 or 4 seasons though...

Sorry it was just too easy. ;)

If it takes him until mid next season to return then it's because someone has shot him in his other leg.

Sad for Shaw probably our best player this season so far. Hopefully it shouldn't affect his speed. How a yellow card wasn't given I will never know?

Gutted for Shaw, he was on the verge of being the best left back in the PL, hopefully he still will be.

Could we sign Ashley Cole on a free if he was available? I know he has declined but Rojo and Blind just aren't going to cut the mustard, especially since both are needed at CB.

Shaw is very good at what he was doing when he got hit last night. Picking up that ball and driving at full speed, causing defences problems. Love players that do that. You hope that when he comes back he's not going to be hesitant to do that kind of thing. To really hit 100% as he moves forward with the ball. It potentially could be a mental thing

Anyway, long way to go and hopefully recovers as one of the quicker from this kind of injury. We're all kind of writing him off already before giving him the chance to recover but we have seen quick players have bad injuries before and never quite be the same. It does run through your mind

Moreno got UEFA's star man award last night, bravo UEFA.

4 fit recognised defenders left & no out and out striker in the squad last night, excellent squad management.

"Mexico defender Moreno sent his "strength" to the left-back and wished him a "fast recovery". "

After what it did to Shaw's leg I'm not sure he could handle anymore of Moreno's "strength".

It is insane that you're bringing on Fellaini late in games when you're chasing. I mean, this is a top European club. Why on earth let Hernandez go if you don't have someone coming in? Was that a loan or a sale for Hernandez? Not even Wilson on the bench

Is Blackett available to recall?

Don't think so, doesn't he have a 3m sale clause on his loan?

We don't need to look that far for an example. Valencia was absolutely brilliant for us before he broke his leg. Sure he's still pacey, but the man could actually cross before the injury! Nowadays he's a backup right back and getting us a corner is his best trait.

Valencia's best year, and winning player of the season came after his leg break, he actually came back better.

We did have someone coming in, Martial but he had to start. Agreed he shouldn't be the option though. I get that Wilson is inexperienced and not ready but either he or Pereira should have been on the bench for an extra option because Fellaini wasn't necessarily what we needed to bring on.

But bringing on Fellaini helped to get late goals enough times in the last 12 months. It's not a great idea to use him as a starting striker leading the line. But bringing on late is absolutely fine. He helped to create a few very good chances yesterday.

He's not a forward in any way other than he's big and guess what the tactics then become .. chuck it up to Fellaini

It may have worked time to time but that doesn't make him a striker and doesn't really make a good option either. It's like putting nippy winger Valencia at right back. Yeah, it works, sort of but that doesn't make him a right back or mean he's great there

Martial is raw and untested. There's no way he can carry the expectation of a proper, experienced striker even like Hernandez on a night like last night imo

Anytime Rooney is out of rotational reasons you're having to turn to Martial or Fellaini is pretty weak. Martial is no doubt a good 'un but can he lead the line for 20 games in a row even? Bit of a big tester when he needs to come and in and be eased into things

Show us on the doll where Fred the Red touched you.

That aside... I still find it ridiculous why we sold all our senior strikers that isn't named Rooney. RVP or Hernandez would be real handy right about now.

On the other hand, giving Martial matches will only help him, so perhaps LVG/United are taking a long-term view. We do have some obvious gaps, however it's better to buy great players that will genuinely improve the starting eleven than just a filler that will do a job for a season or two, and then we may be 'stuck' with him for years paying high wages. We all crave that top-top CB, so hopefully we'll get one next summer.

If Shaw's injury is anything like Diaby's, Eduardo's or Ramsey's it is probably two years till he is properly back playing well. He may become physically fit again but he is likely to be mentally scarred.

It took Ramsey three years to be back playing consistently well.

The only slight positive is at least the injury was in a position where we have plenty of cover. Blind, Rojo and Young can all cover LB. God knows what we would do it that happened to Smalling or one of our attackers.

Would also like to see more of Pereira please, feel like he could have a bit of a break out season if he's given the chance.
