[FM15] Keeping It Steel: Duroliponte's UK and Ireland Challenge

Raheem finally left because of his lack of playing time, taking his obscene wages with him. Wouldn't have been first out of the door if I had my way, but this did raise enough to bring in a few old friends.

2015-08-30_00001.jpg

John McMinn - £5.5 million, Celtic

The new Celtic boss clearly didn't rate him, giving him a pathetic 8 league games last season, and that's why they didn't claim the title this time round. He'd have cost £14 million last summer and I don't care what his star rating is, I believe this man will one day lead Liverpool and England to glory!

2015-08-30_00002.jpg

Brett Thomas- £3.5 million, Everton

Not sure that he'll manage six in a game again, but £3.5 million is good value for a decent quality backup player.

Gary Godfrey- £850k, Crewe

Maybe with the right training and mentoring the solution to the club's DMC predicament in six years time, but in reality I just couldn't resist the Crewe connection.

August Update

2015-08-31_00001.jpg

2015-08-31_00005.jpg

Of all the teams to play on opening day... For once, we were absolutely bossing City but a 2-1 lead was too close for comfort. Then our striker Roldan dives in the box to earn a second yellow card and we're a man down. Not to worry - Diallo tucks it in from a corner to make it 3-1. Sadly, there is still an hour to go which is more than enough time for City to rally and score two to equalise. Rats, that was ours for the taking.

In the other games we look very sharp. We look a lot more convincing than last year with McMinn orchestrating central midfield and Tidemand protecting the defenders.

Decent attempt to get the better of Manchester City and what an embarrassment for them to win the league and not get in the Champions League.

What a strange League Cup Semi Final.

September Update

2015-09-01_00002.jpg

2015-09-01_00001.jpg

I was so annoyed by that lacklustre defeat to Brighton that I ordered Arsenal's head on a platter, and Divock Origi was able to step up and earn a second victory in a row against my former bogey team. I think that honour now goes to Manchester United, who are I think the only big English team I have yet to beat in my career.

They're going to be dead tough to topple, think that the failure to beat them on opening day might haunt me this season.

One factor in Huddersfield's goal rush was the young striker Ibrahim, who has 18 for finishing at age 20. Would be nice to have the £16.5 million needed for his buyout.

Haven't quite mastered away games, but we've certainly turned Anfield into a place any team would fear to visit. The gap is closing...

November Update

2015-09-04_00003.jpg

What was that I was saying about home and away form? We gave our all against United and probably deserved a point. The game against Burnley is an embarrassment, similar to the one against Hull this time last year. I was hoping that I'd got the better of complacency, but this result suggests otherwise. Look who have now stolen second place!

None of the group stage vexations that I've suffered in previous European campaigns, but still a little annoyed that we lost our last match. Valencia got through despite losing their first three games, which I seem to remember Newcastle doing way back when.

December Update

2015-09-05_00001.jpg

2015-09-05_00003.jpg

So many games this month and it has really taken a toll on the squad, with several key players out injured and the removal of more with the African Cup of Nations imminent. The gap is back to one point and it was vital that we salvaged a draw at Stoke, but I'm a bit concerned about the fact we're relying on a 35 year old to score most of our goals at the moment!

January Update

2015-09-05_00009.jpg

2015-09-05_00008.jpg

Again we push City hard, again (as against United) we suffer a 2-1 defeat. This month is so tough, I'm down to my third-or-fourth-choice players in certain positions and we don't win a single league game, despite being 3-1 against Palace with less than ten minutes remaining and then going all-out-attack to beat lowly Blackburn.

I signed former England U21 goalkeeper Apiwat Yakantha from Celtic as backup, I was after him for years when he was at Arsenal and I was at Palace/Celtic but they wanted £44 million for him! I finally got him to sign just before I left Scotland but he wasn't used properly in my absence and is nothing like the hot prospect he once was. Still, he was only a couple of million.

February Update

2015-09-06_00006.jpg

2015-09-06_00005.jpg

Still in fourth, but we have got our swagger back as we demolish Brighton, Fulham and Southampton. We could have won every game this month, but we still lack that extra edge needed against the biggest teams. With a league table as tight as this however, it may not be as much of a handicap as last year.

2015-09-06_00003.jpg

2015-09-06_00004.jpg

Smith was a two-star prospect left-back when I took over, but he's the exact sort of home-grown player needed to turn the squad around in the absence of a huge transfer budget.

Quarter Final

2015-09-07_00005.jpg

2015-09-07_00006.jpg

Devastated by that. We had to play Stoke in what seemed about 3 minutes after we beat United. We fought back twice, and then our goalkeeper ran off his line and missed the ball in the last seconds of the match, leaving the Stoke player to kick into an empty net from 30 yards. It'll just have to be League Cup, League and Champions League wins this season, then.

The Norwich defeat is still a low point.

My keeper running miles off his line in the dying minutes of a quarter final is a low point- BUT at least it wasn't against Norwich I guess.

I like the look of this model professional from my youth intake, would like his heading to be a little better but with the right tutoring he could go far.

2015-09-07_00002.jpg

As is custom whenever I get a really bright prospect I hand them a first-team debut straight away. Simonsen put in a decent 6.8 performance in his first game against Huddersfield (update to follow).

They were better than I expected, but we're into the quarter finals. The money from a good CL run would certainly be welcome.

A strange one as despite the match stats, I always felt there was an element of control from us in all but the first half-hour of the first leg.

A second Champions League semi-final for me, surpassing the legendary Avram Grant.

April Update

2015-09-09_00002.jpg

2015-09-09_00001.jpg

No- not good enough. That silly defeat at Watford is endemic of our poorest results this season and risks taking things out of our hands. I say 'risks' because our next game is rather a big one, away at Nottingham Forest. On the plus side, seven different goalscorers this month is a good sign of squad depth after the difficulties we encountered on this front in the winter.

Title Run-In

A great match with both teams having numerous chances to settle it but Forest lead through a scramble in the box after a corner. A vital last-minute equaliser from Mapson saves our title hopes.

2015-09-09_00010.jpg

Absolute last minute scenes in both games, we conceded from such a weak shot after an admittedly amazing dribble through our defence but Laugier responded with a Yeboah-esque volley and then the goal at the end saw Anfield erupt. Blackburn's heroics in their bid to avoid the drop are equally exciting and put us in the driving seat with two games to go!

Ok, so it's not one of the trophies connected to this challenge, but if a Champions League final on FM doesn't excite you, what will?

Schalke are the current holders, and have some of the world's best players including Carlos Konig (featured way back in post #405) are aiming to win back to back Champions Leagues, something last done by... Liverpool!

Competition Review

Player Ratings

Road to the Cup

My biggest decision before the game was starting with the inconsistent Diallo, who then proceeded to open the scoring from a corner. The next goal also came from a corner, which I hope cheers the board even more as I'm forever being told I don't make enough from set pieces.

Oh, and Real Madrid's legendary manager Brendan Rodgers everybody! :applause:

The tension is unbearable. YNWA!

We got there! Wooo! Now for 8 years of trying to win the Community Shield.

Exciting stuff!

Congrats!

Ha' date=' you knew who would decide the destiny of the title all along. The page split is pretty annoying but I guess it prolongs the tension.

Those words are just wrong!

He's managed Leicester, Wolfsburg and Norwich in recent years, aka history's biggest midlife crisis.

I want to put together a team of amazing youth players who can dominate in around 8 years' time, although I suspect I will be long gone by then. Monaco signed one of my left backs for £35.5 million, which was just silly money. I wanted to reallocate this to signing three Crystal Palace players but the current Palace manager is Duncan Ferguson and, well, we just don't get along.

2015-09-12_00001.jpg

Ryan Andrews - £31 million, Crystal Palace

Another Palace youth product, I handed him his debut a few years back (post #418 has the backstory) and he's now a 25 goal a season striker. There's no getting around the fact that this is more than I would have wanted to pay but a) he looks a natural long-term replacement for Duarte b) Forest and Manchester United also bid for him and I wanted to trump them and c) Darren Ferguson.

If I had to drive a hard bargain for Andrews, that was nothing compared to my attempts to sign Mark Molyneux. I thought an offer of £25 million would do the job, Fergie Junior wanted £125 million and a £22 million rated midfielder!

2015-09-15_00002.jpg

Bernard Ibrahim - £14 million, Huddersfield

He's the young striker that went crazy against us in that Capital One Cup semi a couple of seasons ago. He looked good then and my scouting team really rated him.

2015-09-14_00001.jpg

Ryan Connor - £9.25 million, Hull

If you're particularly obsessive about this thread, you might remember I had him on loan for a season at Palace (#438). Now he's a reasonable squad player who can fill any slot in the back four.

Geraint Hayes - £850k, Wrexham

Rare to see a youth goalkeeper of this quality in the lower leagues, I thought I might as well invest.

Great stuff hanging in there to win the league and congrats in the UCL. ;)
Great success there Duroliponte.

Cheers, just the FA Cup and Community Shield to claim here now, so probably a good time to arrange a new contract.

Season so far

2015-09-17_00007.jpg

With the Community Shield won, it's all about the FA Cup from now on, but I can hardly keep my job if we're 15th in the league either. Thankfully, despite a player rebellion over my lack of first team signings, we've mostly been excellent - only perennial bogey side Man City beating us so far, and stopping Norwich's run of 5 consecutive wins at the start of the season. Still in three competitions that I have won in the past, but the FA Cup focus remains.

2015-09-17_00005.jpg

2015-09-17_00003.jpg

2015-09-15_00001.jpg

I forgot to mention above that I bought a very raw talent from Middlesbrough for 800k in the summer. He's got a lot of work to do, but already has a place in the record books.

2015-09-17_00001.jpg

2015-09-17_00002.jpg

We've been excellently defensively this term, but the loss of our star goalkeeper could be painful.

2015-09-16_00001.jpg

Lastly, on 1 November, the board gave me something that would have been more useful on 1 August:

Another bonus trophy final after we see off LA Galaxy 2-1 in the semi-final. Fortune has favoured the European teams in this save, and I'm confident of claiming the cup, especially if that's the same Junior Baiano who played in the 1998 World Cup.
