New Club, Building a new team

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Just basically wanted to get some ideas about how you go about assessing and reshaping their team when they move to a club in a league you don't know. I spent 6 productive seasons in the Iranian leagues where I took a team from 3rd tier to champions but after taking the team as far as I could I wanted a new challenege and managed to get a job in the 3.Bundesliga with Sandhausen. They have just been relegated and have a very large wage budget that I need to trim. Basically I need to get rid of 3/4 of the squad and rebuild. My aim is get them into the Bundesliga

As an example of the types of ideas I'm looking for how would you go about assesing the base stat level of the league (i.e for a defender what would be the minimum tackling/marking/heading stat you would search for based on the current level of the league?

The first thing I do is check the 'team comparison' page. Will tell you exactly where you are at in terms of the rest of the league. I know from that page why my Cambridge side are holding their own in the Championship. I am fully aware my players are not the most gifted players but they are the best in the league at Work Rate, Teamwork and Passing. So what they lack in positioning or technique they make up for in pure hard work.

The first thing I do is make sure there aren't any serious issues involving the league I'm trying to play in, like there are with German football at the moment.

But yeah, the team comparison page. Before you sign anyone, have an idea of why you're signing them and what their role is. In that first year it's pretty easy to oversell and overbuy, so err on the side of caution.

And if you're reshaping the squad from top to bottom, like you sound like you'll need to do with Sandhausen, you should take a good long look at your tactics and try to find players who maybe offer a little bit more in any particularly specialized roles. Just as an example, in Serie C, I made Sodinha one of my first signings. His mentals and physicals are pretty poor, but technically he's far, far too good for that league. A player with decent Creativity, Decisions and Passing, and 16-20s in Dribbling, Long Shots, Crossing and Free Kicks is really quite good if utilized correctly. He's a player who gets magnified by your tactics; atrocious as a BBM and pretty superb as a playmaker or supporting winger. Those players can be really useful since they're generally undervalued relative to players with more balanced attributes. So I'll usually try to build a base of six or seven relatively attribute-balanced players with three or four specialists, who compensate for extremely poor general attributes with abberantly high figures in others. As for knowing the relevant baseline values, I base that almost entirely off my scouting and team comparison reports.
