That laptop is not new. The 3 digit in the processor model name (3230M) shows that it's the older generation of Intel processors. New generation has a 4 as the first digit.

Apart from that, that computer should run FM quite ok - Ideally you would have a little bit more RAM, 6 GB would be nice. But you should be able to run FM with a decent sized database and a few leagues playable with that one. Depending on how good it is with getting rid of heat ... Acer's typically do not excel in that area. But the same can be said about nearly everything in the budget segment.

Ivy Bridge is still current as long as retailers have stock and if he is not buying 2nd hand then the laptop is surely new?

My Sony Vaio has an I5-3230m and it runs FM 2014 fine. Large database with England down to League 2 plus the top divisions from Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain.

3D match engine is set to medium with all options on and runs fine as-well.

TBH at £400 that is a good deal, you will struggle to find a brand new laptop better at the price.

So unused = new? Ok. I beg to differ. Specially when it's computer hardware we're talking about. I know Ivy Bridge is still in stock @ several retailers, and that they desperatly want to get rid of said stocks before nobody no longer want to buy it. So if the price cut is good, it's all good - I just wanted to make the OP aware that he's not buying latest generation hardware, in case he didn't know.

Are the Haswell processors really worth paying more for? I've heard that the main improvements have been made in power consumption and battery life rather than performance.

I'm currently looking for a new laptop and have an absolute MAX of £500 to spend, this is non-negoatiable as I've already had to make a lot of savings to afford this much, so the MSI linked above is out of the question. Ideally looking for an i5 with dedicated graphics, although I only really use it for FM so the quality of the GPU is not a priority. I've seen a couple of Lenovo's which meet these requirements but they are immensely ugly and I don't want to spend all of my money on a crap looking machine.

I know I'm asking a lot for the money but does anyone have any suggestions?

If you're in the UK, pcspecialist.co.uk. If you're somewhere else, there are a few retailers around Europe, NorthAmerica, and Asia that sells the same brands of custom laptops. You will get best bang for the buck with one of these. But I think PCSpecialist delivers across Europe, in any case.

In addition to much improved efficiency, the integrated graphic chips in the new Haswell's are also a lot better than the older Intel HD4000.

From what I can see it looks like I could afford a 3rd Gen i5 with dedicated graphics but not a 4th gen. Would you guys prioritise a dedicated GPU or a Haswell processor?

I could get the following 3rd gen i5 with 2GB GPU (but only 4GB RAM and no optical drive):

Or I could get the following 4th gen i5 with integrated Intel 4400 graphics (but doesn't look as good as the one above):

would definitely recommend checking PC Specialist out.

Thanks for the suggestion, I had a look earlier and you definitely get a lot for your money there. Unfortunately the cheapest I can get an i5 with a dedicated GPU is £567 which I can't realistically afford.

On the whole Haswell is slightly quicker with improved intergrated GPU, slightly better thermals and slightly better TDP.

With the exception of the GPU (which is much improved) your only looking at roughly 8-12% difference

You've said your budget is £400 so there has to be a reason for this, with that in mind I would say it wouldn't be worth the extra unless you know FOR SURE that the extra outlay dosn't bother you and like I said above, my Sony Vaio uses an I5-3230m and it is absolutely fine with a large database and a few leagues loaded plus the 3d match engine.
