How would you go about this? I've had a crack but the style isn't really coming across as I'd like. I've set up like so:

Symmetrical 2-3-2-2-1

Ball Playing Defenders (support) x 2 - with Roma playing a swift counter attacking style I figured defenders who will look for a quick through ball would be the right way to go.

Wing Backs (support) x 2 - Wing Backs with a support function will play through balls rather than crossing a lot, which fits in with what I've seen of Roma's system.

Defensive Midfielder x 1 (defence) - The De Rossi role, there to break up the opponent's play in the middle and play simple balls to his more attacking colleagues.

Central Midfielder x 1 (support) - To hold position in the middle, provide a 'constant' to our shape, a central point around which the more specialist players can ply their trade.

Advanced Playmaker x 1 (attack) - To support the False 9 in the gap between midfield and attack, providing numbers to attack through the middle where opposition defenders are pulled out of position by my inside forwards.

Inside Forwards x 2 (attack) - In theory they should pick up the Gervinho role, cutting inside to pressure centre backs staying deep to deal with the False 9 or taking advantage of space where centre backs are pulled out of position by the False 9.

False 9 x 1 (support) - To do what Totti has been doing this season. Creating space for the inside forwards by forcing centre backs to follow him down the pitch or to stay deep and allow room for other attacking players to run at them.

Team Instructions

-More direct passing

-Higher tempo

-Exploit flanks

-Play wider

-Pass into space

-Run at defence

-Be more disciplined

-Stick to positions

Fluidity: Rigid

Mentality: Counter

I haven't done anything with player instructions yet as I'm unsure where to go with this. As for the rest, it's quite possible that my interpretation of Roma's style is all wrong. So what I'm after is advice as to how to replicate their style as closely as possible in FM14. Any help much appreciated.

He seems to have set Roma up like Spalletti originally did. Totti's role would be treq not False 9.

strootman seem play as B2B midfielder he is good in both defence and offence, look how he rampage to front after he recieve key pass from totti before give assist to florenzi against inter. DDR drop between the defence and the midfield.

the inside forwards seem identical but gervinho seem to dribble more

i dont think pjanic plays as AP, bcos i think the main creative outlet is actually totti.

after totti injured pjanic plays more creative role could be AP, and borriello as TM

agree with iMan totti seems play as TQ, but he is injured doing defensive work against napoli, what you guys make of that?

I think Roma's a bit hard to replicate in terms of tactics. They play on the counter in some ways, but they also press high initially, then drop deep if they fail to win the ball back. They move the ball vertically, not focused on possession. They attack at speed.

So I think your formation is good (actually what I used for my recent save). I see the way they play as:

- GK is standard

- Central defenders are pretty stock standard too, though Benatia gets forward sometimes. personally played them as just CD (D) for stability

- Wing backs are integral and provide width given the two inside forwards. Balzaretti seems a little more attacking to me, but probably no need to change to attacking as it'd leave you too vulnerable... WB (S) is good.

- DM (D) is the de Rossi role, so you've got that spot on. He's always the deepest midfielder and can even drop between the back 2 to receive the ball. An idea I had (haven't tried) is to make the two wing backs attacking, and change de Rossi to a Half-back so he drops between the two CD's, creating a back three.

- Here's where I differ a bit... I see Strootman as a B2B... he covers the pitch vertically, getting forward to support attacks and tracking back really well to defend.

- Pjanic is probably the toughest role to get right. He's the most creative midfielder, but he also works back well. He and Strootman can often interchange. Maybe a CM (A), as I see him bursting into the box alot.

- The two IF's are completely key to the attacks... both Gervinho and Florenzi are great at cutting inside and overloading the middle, though Gervinho frustrates the hell out of me. They interchange very regularly too, so swap wide players is something I used.

- Totti I had as a TQ. As a F9 he seemed to play too centrally, whereas I see his real life role as pulling the centre backs out, yes, but primarily drifting wide, creating overloads in the wide midfield areas to enable the IF's and midfielders to burst into the box. Sort of like Ozil does so well. I had him as a TQ with move into channels to focus him out wide.

The problem with replicating Roma in FM is that it's hard to get the defensive side correct. They press high, but then drop very deep, alot of the time you'll have the back 4, then 5 players in front. In that great win against Inter it was pretty common to see Totti back too, meaning they had all 11 players behind the ball. As a TQ he doesn't do this, and the IF's don't track back well enough, so I don't think we can get it exactly right until we can set separate attacking/defensive/transition formations.

Anyway, there's my Roma Ramble.

Good to hear :-) how are you finding it's working in the game? I managed a second in my first season, but wasn't overly happy with how it was all working so I'll revisit after the patch

according to an article I read from thezonalmarking, totti plays deep to pull out and disrupt inter's defenders for florenzi to score.

"Now 37 years old, Francesco Totti has been the star of this Serie A season, turning in a serious of good performances in something approaching the ‘false nine’ role he famously played so well under Luciano Spalletti"

works great in 2013 :), manage to win the first season with a quite thin defence squad depth.

in 2014 still in friendlies, there's one counter attacking moment where is the movement is quite similar to the florenzi goal against Inter, where totti's magic ball control making pass for strootman, and he runs forward before he pass to florenzi, but unlucky he didnt score :D, so yea I think we're in the right track on replicating Roma's tactic :)

, still frustrated by the defence flaw in 2014, until SI come up with a new patch, Im playing 2013 :D
