That's awesome.

Were you not in the Champions league last season?

Guess you've got that to look forward to.

I was, at the qualifying round where i lost to Olympique Marseille and then the Euro Cup where i lost at the playoff round to a Danish team. But because i won the League now i go in at the Group stage. :)

Also beat Basel 2-1 in the Swiss Cup, to net Grasshoppers 20th Cup, after not winning it since 1999, so a very productive season overall, thanks to a fantastic tactic.

Well played to you Sir!

Great tactic this :)

I just wonder, do you have any prefered moves you think we should train for each position?

Good point, over the next few days I'm going to do a post on the player roles, attributes and preferred moves.

In the meantime, train anyone with 'long throw' attribute of 14 or above to do the 'flat bullet throw' and in set pieces put them throw ins.

Any throw in within 30 yards of your opponents goal is now a 'mini corner'

This tactic has been really good for me so far, finished 1st in the championship with Birmingham City and now after 15 premier league games im above the relegation zone so all going pretty well.

Is anyone else having trouble with the strikers scoring? They hardly get any. Also i seem to concede most of my goals from corners or set pieces put into the box.

Any thoughts on this?

I think the set pieces and corners are a wider problem with match engine and you can only do so much to mitigate it in tactic.

Working very well for me at the moment. 17 wins from 20 with AZ in Holland. Midfield contributing lots of goals, good full back performances and the false nine getting plenty of goals too. So far so very good.

Good work!

There is a known issue/bug with the 'under hit' near post corner.

Leave your match training on defending set peices.

Trying adding 'pass into space' to the team instructions, it should 'feed' your poacher a few more chances.

In reality you had a big step up in class, you're likely to be creating fewer, lower quality chances until you can improve your team/players.

Sorry forget that - I was just being stupid! :D

Well Im nearly half way through my first season with Whitehawk and have a record of 10-4-1, 30 goals for and 14 against... but only one point away from 2nd place. Got to FA cup first round proper and still int eh trophy. The tactic is great but has 'days off' where nothing works... three of the four draws where late conceding from 2-0 up.

Also the ratings seem all over the place... lots of 5s and low 6s, especially full backs but Im assuming this is a bug.

One big THANK YOU from me, Mr. Uwe Roesler! I think this formation is outstanding. I just completed my first season with Lazio and despite the quality of the players in my team won 4 trophies (Italian Super Cup, Italian Cup, UEFA Cup and Serie A). I started using the tactic in the beta and it was excellent, after the patch I started having difficulties scoring goals. My strikers were often having day off, so I changed your corner routine to the one from Zero Sea tactic, later read your suggestion to add the pass into space instruction and did that. The chances in front of my strikers started coming one after another. I played 14 matches with that setting on and got 12 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. The loss was a second leg match in the UEFA cup and moved ahead. The draw was against Juventus, I was up 2:0 got two players sent off and Sebastian Giovinco equalized in the last minute.

I am not sure what I do wrong, but for some reason I cannot add a screenshot with the results.

Can you please share a little bit more about the attributes needed for each position? I am going to need to rebuild the squad and I am not really sure what attributes do I need to look for in particular for the "False 9". I used Miroslav Klose there the first season.

Thank you!

Gutted.

2nd Season with Farnborough. It was all going so well, I lead the field by around 10 points all the way through. For some reason lost the last 5 matches straight and got pipped to top spot. Actually made the playoff final this time but lost in extra time to a side who finished 16 points behind me.

I'm sure I would have won the league if I hadn't had the distraction of the FA Trophy. Reached the final beating some top Skrill Prem sides but lost 4-0 at Wembley against Northern Premier side Trafford! Anyway, I dropped a few points as these extra fixtures saw a lack of fitness in some of the league games.

Oh well, maybe next season. The cup run has at least provided me with a bigger budget to play with.

Man, you've got to be the unluckiest player ever.

1 automatic promotion spot is really tough to start with. Improve you're squad even slightly and you HAVE to go up next year!

Using v2 with a 14.0.3 game with Luton in the Conference. Took a few months to get going but ended up promoted via The Play Offs. Same happened in League 2 with mostly the same set of players - started slowly but eventually clicked. Sneaked into play offs on last game of the season but won in the semis and final. Now in League 1 and mid-table after 10 games with a new squad and new players.

A few notes - strikers don't score loads and loads of goals - top scorer had 20, lots of others chipped in. Both centre halves scored at least 10 in both seasons. Concede a fair few goals, average score at least 2-1. Player ratings are appalling, particularly the full backs. Team wins 4-0 and they maybe average 5.7 or 5.8 when everyone else gets 8.0+

Also finding that reputation doesn't seem to increase at all - I haven't been linked with a single job (I'm in the last year of my contract) and I'm finding it difficult to attract better players as they don't want to sign - even those who are free agents 3/4 months after being released from a club in the same division! Finally, and this may just be an issue with Luton, but the board won't give me a feeder/parent club nor will they increase the number of coaches. We have £4m in the bank so cash not a problem.

Ah. That's not great. I worked out unticking the 'unrealistic transfer' box but it means I'm having to offer average L1 players £7000 a week to sign which is unrealistic and silly.

I am using your tactic with Southampton, I just lost 5-1 to West Brom away. I lost 3-1 to Everton first game of the season, and lost 2-1 to Fulham at home. The only game I have won is in the League cup beating Bury 2-0 at home. Any advice?

Edit: just lost 4-0 away to swansea, having 30% possession.

edit2: 3-0 loss at home to cardiff.

I have restarted three games now with Monaco and this tactic. This time it has to work! Got beaten by 2-4 against Bordeux, 2-3 Marselles and 0-3 Lille. In the first two matches I had the game more or less until they start banging in goals for fun at me. I have a pretty new squad so I imagine that they must gel quickly. Problem is that the morale gets so low after three-four losses. Im conviced we will bring it around but I just hope it will be in time until I get sacked.

Also: Any hints for good F9s?

Ok, before we look at some of the positions and players roles lets talk about recruitment.

The way I see it there are 2 styles of recruitment Generalist & Specialist.

Generalist Recruitment

So throughout my Stockport campaign i've never really had a transfer budget so I've had to look at free transfers only. Lets look at this from a Generalist recruitment point of view.

Adopting a Generalist approach I wait until the the 1st of June, identify the position I wanted to strengthen first i.e Centre Back, filter out unrealistic transfers, search position - Center Back, contract expiring in next 30 days, list them in value order and simply scout the top 20 most valuable centre backs with a contract expiring within the next 30 days. Wait for the scout reports, list by highest recommendation (star rating) and sign the highest rated player you can get.

So we are simply relying on our scouts judgements, the star rating system and the fact that if we are in the Championship, and we just signed a centre back rated as a Leading Star for this Division, we are happy that this is a good player and will improve the squad.

A simple and effective approach. We haven't even looked at attributes.

Specialist Recruitment

This is my preferred approach. On the surface, I have have 4 strikers in my squad. In reality and in my mind we dont, we have 2 Poachers and 2 False 9's, I'm no more likely to play my Poacher in my False 9 position than I am to play my Goal Keeper at right back.

I have a team full of 'Specialists'.

There are 8 specialist positions in this tactic.

Goalkeeper, Fullback, Centre Back, Anchor Man, Box to Box midfielder, Advanced Playmaker, False 9 and Poacher.

I have 4 attributes for every position which MUST meet a minimum standard for that position at all costs and at the expense of all other attributes.

Lets look at the above Centre Back scenario again, we go to transfer centre, centre backs, contract expiring in 30 days and now we pick the 4 key attributes we have for the centre back position as below.

My Centre Back key attributes.

Jumping Reach

Marking

Team Work

Tackling

We start with all these attributes at 15 and then knock them all down 14,13,12 etc until we reveal a pool of 10 to 12 players, scout them as above and again list them in according to Star Ratings.

As far as I'm concerned anyone of this pool can do a 'job' for example, lets look at one of my first choice centre backs for my Championship campaign.

um9s.jpg

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

or more clearly

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/7091/um9s.jpg

This player is rated as 'good for League 1', I am in the Championship so on the surface he is not even good enough for my squad never mind being a first choice selection.

Yet he played over 30 league games for me in a team that finished 2nd in the Championship with an average rating of 7.15.

How is this possible.

His key attributes

Jumping Reach = 15

Marking = 14

Team Work = 15

Tackling = 13

He is a specialist, with the specialist skills to perform the job required of him. Outside of these stats he looks pretty poor but it doesn't matter.

What does this mean?

Its meant that my Stockport team with a low reputation could sign a League 1 player, on League 1 wages who i knew would not let me down in the Championship. This pattern is repeated around the team. There is no way i could afford or attract a full team of 'Championship' rated players. This approach allowed me to gain promotion from the Championship with a squad full of League 1 players.

Back to recruitment, we have our pool of 10 to 12 players who we know can 'do a job' so we can look at all of them and 'cherry pick' the ones who have nice complimentary attributes and build our team from there.

I will look at the False 9 position later...

Not sure if it's the tactic or ME but the forwards don't seem to be working very well for me and I'd say that Sturridge and Suarez would be one of the best combinations around for this tactic.

6 games and 5 goals is awful, but I'm third in the table?

I'm assuming the tactic is fully fluid by now?

Have you added 'pass into space' to team instructions?

The strikers do seem to blow hot & cold but I've never had my poacher finish on less than 20 league goals in the end,

5 games is not statistically that relevant.

The ME is a bit 'quirky' at the moment and I expect an update pretty soon. I'm reluctant to change anything until then as there are a lot of complaints about striker finishing and it seems to be on SI's radar.

Keep me posted.

Thanks

So...... the False 9...... the position I get asked about the most.

Its a good time for us to look at this, i've just been promoted to the Premier League, I have a bit of cash but not much, my club reputation is ok but not amazing, my first choice False 9 from last year will become by back up for this year so I need a new one.

I strengthen my teams from the front, to use a boxing reference, a poor boxer with big punch will have a chance in any fight. So i will be prepared to spend a chunk of cash on my new front 2.

As per my post above I outline below the 4 key attributes I DEMAND from my False 9, anything else is gravy.............

FLAIR

CREATIVITY

FINISHING

TEAMWORK

Why these, we want a true creative force, (flair, creativity) who will be a 'feeder' of chances to our poacher and midfielders, someone who is not selfish, a team player who rather than try and squeeze that shot in at the near post from a tight angle will instead look to lay on a clear cut chance for someone else in a better position (teamwork) but still be a capable finisher in his own right. (finishing)

So I commenced my search, pumped in my required attributes at 15, notched that down a couple and looked at who popped up...............

HE DID !! ........ and now he's mine......... Mu-hu-hu-hahahaha!!

2ova.png

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

better view

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3021/2ova.png

This guy is a freak (in a good way), he meets our False 9 requirements well with 17 flair, 13 creativity, 14 finishing and 16 team work but look at what else he brings to the table.

6 feet 7 inches, jumping 17, strength 17, determination 18.

This guy is a monster, he looks like a Target Man but he could in fact excel in any of the forward roles, even some kind of freaky, giant poacher, however he is going to be my false 9.

I would consider this guy a genuine 'Triple Threat' (technical, physical and mental), someone I can build the team around.

Now this guy is unusual, you'd be very lucky to find someone like this, who meets your key requirements well but brings an awful lot more to the table.

Let me show you a more 'classic' False 9, someone who's been with me for a few years, developed and performed well and who will be by no.2 for this position.

jgfm.png

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

better view..

http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/2058/jgfm.png

So, this guy is more normal, he joined me in league 2 and has improved as we've gone along. However he is rated as 'good for Championship', but we're not worried about that because when we look at his key attributes we require for our False 9 we see.....

Flair 17

Creativity 17

Finishing 12

Teamwork 11

Now, I would not sign him now due to his finishing and teamwork being too low, however as a back up and due to the fact I don't have any cash i am more than confident that as a 'back up', when called upon he will do a fine job in the Premier League 17 for both flair and creativity is exceptional, we have a clever little player more than capable of opening up defences.

So, to summarise we are looking for players who meet our four key attribute requirements, having established that small pool of players we can then look for that SPECIAL EXTRA SOMETHING that someone can also bring which will add variety, the unexpected, the X Factor to our team such as lightening pace, hideous strength, immense physicality, exquisite technique, world class finishing, outstanding leadership etc. Go through that pool of players until you see something you like.

In the end you end up with capable, specialized players all over the pitch, often available cheaply on low wages, over looked by bigger teams as they are not 'complete' players with one or two X-MEN ABILITIES which add a lot of character to your team and the game building that affinity with your players.

next up....... The poacher

how important is the role?

for example they meet all the key stats but the role you want them in isnt their best one say for example they are 4 1/2 star at limited defender and 3 stars at central defender, they still any good?

Personally I wouldn't worry about that. In fact that will probably only happen with the centre backs as the attributes we are searching for in other positions will likely draw out the kind of players we are after for each role.

Look at the player ratings, the team that had 5 shots all game get 7.47, your guys get 6.49 despite dominating every meaningful stat. (Apart from score!)

We are clearly swimming against the tide with this match engine, when they fix it we'll truly start smashin it up!

15 corners lol.

The absolute WORST thing about it, is that when anyone brings this issue up on the feedback thread it's laughed off like it is something that happens all the time to the same team game after game.

3rd time lucky

dp5m.jpg

Once again I had trouble getting the tactic up to top familiarity which left me with two points from the first 5 matches but once there I was pretty unbeatable on chances. I think I might try adding a few more pre season friendlies next time. Maybe start pre season a week or two earlier to get the tactic going as soon as possible.

Anyway, another playoff final and this time the right result.

Onwards and upwards.

The Poacher.

What are our 4 key attributes?

Pace

Dribbling

Composure

Finishing

Why these?

Well our Poacher is our most advanced player in just about all situations, sitting on the shoulder of the last defender. He needs the ability to run quickly with the ball at his feet (pace, dribbling) to take advantage of a wide range of opportunities from counter attacking to through balls and also being able to get to loose balls before defenders. Having gotten into good goalscoring positions he needs the composure and finishing ability to put the ball in the net, especially in one on one situations with the goal keeper.

Lets looks look at my new player following my step up to the Premier Division.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

So an exciting young prospect who will play a lot of Premier League Football and hopefully get even better, quickly.

Key stats

Pace = 18

Dribbling = 13

Composure = 15

Finishing = 15

An excellent prototype poacher for this formation.

He also brings some interesting 'extra's' to the table, 18 free kicks is nice to have, we might do some work on that on the training ground to see if we can get it to 19/20. But more interesting to me is the Leadership stat of 16, its good to have a leader in all areas of the pitch and its quite unusual to find a young striker with this attribute so high. Again, its not something I would 'search' for but once we have met our key requirements for our poacher its one of the things I would take notice off.

You can specialise your poachers in other ways, once we have met the baseline stats you could look for someone who is dominant in the air (poachers don't have to be small!) or someone who is highly technical depending on your own preferences and how you like your teams to play.

My back up striker, been with me for a few seasons, good scoring record. Not ideal for the Premier Division but we know he can do a job.

zhyt.png

Again, he meets our baseline requirements, certainly up to Championship level, the Premier League is pushing it but we don't have the cash to have 2 great players in every position but we know he can do a job.

Note how he has scored at least 20 league goals a season, EVERY season across 3 divisions.

To summarise, the Poacher is our cutting edge, he should be our leading goal scorer and be on the end of most of our clear cut and half chances he has 2 requirement, he needs to be able to get into excellent goal scoring positions and when he does have the composure and finishing ability to put the ball in the net.

next up..... Advanced Playmaker.....

Some very useful in detail descriptions of the players and attributes needed, Iv found it really useful to get my head round a couple of the new roles in FM14. Think you should add those last few player post's to your opening post so they dont get lost they will be a lot of use to a lot of people I think.

As for the tactic all iv done is buy mainly midfielders to fit this mould and a couple of strikers and Im doing amazing. 10 Games 9 Wins 1 Loss although the loss was a 6-2 thumping but cant fault it. Some lovely play between the strikers and score more than 2 goals game.

Nice tactic, as in previous version, keep up the good work. Your positions descriptions also very useful.

Here's my progress in CL.

As you can see had no problems scoring goals, but a few issues at the back. Found the ME a bit dodgy, anyway a fair way into the season in the Skrill Prem and sitting second, and beat Hartlepool away in the FA Cup 1st round they were 16th in lge 1.

I find the poacher and the playmaker the most important positions to get key players who can finish as these get the majority of the goals imo

Also pointing out i didnt win the league until till the end of the season 41st game i think, spent most of the year in 2nd / 3rd, until Boreham Wood hit a bad run and i hit the good form when the tactic became 100% familiarity.
