FM14: Arsenal Thread - "Remember who you are, what you are and who you represent!"

He is absolutely horrible for me. 15 goals in the league doesn't sound too bad, but he scored those 15 goals in 7 or 8 games. Getting on the scoresheet 7 or 8 times in ~38 games is not exactly impressive for the money he's on. Will try to offload him very soon.

The one game I had him on he scored a goal every 1.5 games and assisted at a similar rate..but with the right midfield set up, this isn't too hard to do on FM..and can be done with worse players....

I love your reports KL, it must take you as long to write as it does to play...., trust bloody Stoke to stuff your season up.

Cheers RG. Yeah they probably do! Worth it though when people like you respond. Currently still in early stages of Pre-Season so new update not until after Christmas.

So annoyed with the Stoke game. Lowest point of the season. Also drew at home 1-1 on Fifa just to make it worse. They scored an injury time equaliser too.

got a screenie of the tactics you used?

I can't seem to do a screenshot but I can tell you;

Play Rigid or Balanced and Control.

Shouts top of my head are; Pass short Play Narrower, Much Higher Tempo, Play into area, Drop Deeper, Play into space.

All depends on the match and the situation

Giroud is playing fine in my game, still my number 1 striker. But Mitrovic is knocking on the door.

Have an amazing run now without conceding. Conceded only 2 goals in like 15/20 matches.

Won all pre-season matches without conceding. Conceded 1 in the Community shield vs Chelsea 1-1 (won on penalties). And one in the UEFA SC 4-1 win over Steau Bucarest.

Me happy ;)

Anyone know how much it would cost to prize Pirlo/Xavi away from there club to Arsenal at the start?

even if a bid were accepted, im guessing either the player themself or the agent would say they are not interested unfortunately

Just started my Arsenal save, hope you all had a good Christmas!

Pre-season didn't go to plan, although I won the Friendly Cup beating Galatasaray and Espanyol; this was mainly down to injuries. My back 4 consisted of:

RB: Bellerin, CB: Sagna, CB: Monreal, LB: Flamini.

These are my results so far.

fdm0.png

Been drawn against Atletico Madrid, Olympiakos and Napoli in the group stages. Quite struck down with injuries, Giroud, Podolski and Walcott are all out so I brought in Vietto. Bendtner is returning from injury so also having to rely on Chuba Akpom. Obviously I brought in Vietto but I thought we were also short at the back during pre-season; Per Metersacker didn't get any games down to injuries to I brought in Ajax's young centre-back Joel Veltman.

UEFA Champions League - 1st K/O Rnd - 1st leg

Barcelona 1-1 Arsenal - L.Bender, Heintz s/o - Alves s/o, Alba s/o

Premier League Bottom 3

18. Sunderland - P-28 - 22

19. West Ham - P-29 - 19

20. Hull City - P-28 - 19

I was not expecting to be looking down from the top of the Premier League seeing that we are trying the old fashioned W-M tactic.

The worst result was a 4-2 defeat away to Fulham which was not the perfect preparation for an away trip to Barcelona. Well I needn't have worried we played superbly to hold Barcelona to a 1-1 draw. Messi put Barcelona 1-0 in front on 61 mins and then on 70 mins Lars Bender pulled us level with a deserved equaliser

Barcelona had Dani Alves (65) and Jordi Alba (90) sent of then we lost Dominique Heintz (90+2) who was dismissed in added on time, but all in all a very good result for us.

There were some managerial casualties last month as well with Malky Mackay being replaced by Martin O'Neil at Cardiff after Mackay took over the vacant Everton post after Roberto Martinez was sacked.

There was also a change on the red side of the City as Brendan Rodgers was sacked by Liverpool and replaced by Guus Hiddink.

Next month sees us take on Man City in the Capital One Cup final and the return leg against Barcelona. Oh well fingers crossed.

18. West Ham - P-32 - 28

19. Sunderland - P-32 - 23

20. Hull C - P-32 - 23

So our first piece of silverware was picked up at Wembley with a 5-3 penalty shootout against Man City. With the scores at 1-1 after 120 mins we went into the dreaded penalty shootout, but we needn't have worried as we scored all five of ours while Man City's Zabaleta missed his spot kick to hand us a deserved victory.

After our outstanding 3-1 aggregate win over Barcelona we will be nearer home in the Quarter finals having been drawn to face Man City. The other ties are,

Dortmund v Chelsea, Zenit v R. Madrid, FC Bayern v CSKA Moscow

More managers have changed places as well with Man Utd sacking David Moyes and replacing him with Tottenham's André Vilas-Boas and the vacant seat at Spurs was filled by Zenit St Petersburg's Italian manager Luciano Spalletti.

Arsenal Season 2 – Pre season

I have returned from my fifa sabbatical and ready for season 2 of the only game I actually care about!

FIRST SEASON SUMMARY

So the first season went by quite quickly (for me). We cantered to the league title securing 97 points and suffering just the one defeat a home loss to Man United having returned the favour tpo them earlier in the season.

In the Champions league we beat Napoli Barcelona and Real Madrid to reach the final against Bayern. For the first time in a while we hit top form and thumped them 4-1

In the league Cup we had a horrible draw but got through it to beat Stoke in the final

PRE-SEASON

Pre-season as expected was dominated by the World Cup. The boys returned to training shortly before the first game at Barnet. We were due to play in a cup competition hosted by Napoli featuring Gladbach and Benfica but it got cancelled meaning I had to make my own at late notice.

My main two targets were Insigne and Lars Bender. Having been given a 41million transfer kitty I thought I would play the waiting game until it got slightly bigger and hope and pray that none of my domestic or European rivals would snap them up. They didn’t but Benders price went through the roof and I had to look elsewhere. As the clock clicked down I got desperate and eventually brought in Alonso for a cheap price. Baines also came in on deadline day.

I didn’t plan to sell many except for possibly Arteta and Vermaelen. In the end I sold a lot more than I expected. Some shock names on the out list. Loans aplenty too.

FIXTURES

We started at Barnet with Lewandowski and Insigne lining up alongside Ozil. 3-1 first half was repeated when Giroud and Cazrola replaced the two new signings. At Bournemouth it was the turn of Schurrle to start. He set up Vietto for the first goal and had an excellent debut. Despite Derry being the weakest team we faced my focus was on defense hence the minimal scoreline. Our trip to Bari hailed the start of the second stage of pre-season where we would step it up against better teams. We started well by dominating a Bari side that were lucky to get the two goals. Our final game before the Emirates Cup saw us take on Monaco. They played a full strength side with Falcao who needed the opener starting. We on the other hand went for another mix and match job. A draw would’ve been fairer. Highly rated Youngster Ndah got himself on the scoresheet.

Barnet (A) 2-6 Lewandowski Insigne(2) Giroud Balanta Wilshere

Bournemouth (A) 2-2 – Vietto 2

Derry City (A) 0-2 – Miyaitchi Wilshere

Bari (A) 2-4 – Giroud 2 Lewandowski 2

Monaco (N) 3-2 – Ozil Ndah.

EMIRATES CUP

SF - Arsenal 3-0 Club Brugge – Schurrle 60 Mertersacker 66 Lewandowski 82

A comfortable win over Bruge. A truly wonderful strike by Schurrle opened the scoring in the second half before further goals by Mertersacker and Lewandowski. A good response to the loss against Monaco. A clean sheet for the trialist keeper. A bloke called Victor Valdez. Boca won 3-0 in the other game against Estudiantes.

FINAL – Arsenal 2-0 Boca Juniors – Ozil Lewandowski

A very comfortable final. Boca didn’t have a single shot on target. Estudiantes won the other game on penalties.

Community Shield – ARSENAL 2-1 STOKE CITY – Lewandowski 21 Walcott 83 – Cameron 20

We played Stoke for the third time at Wembley in the community shield. It was another close game. Cameron gave stoke the lead but Lewandowski who was one of two summer signings along with Barry to start, immediately replied. The second half was more open but Walcott burst through to score the winner. Another trophy.

Let the games begin……

AUGUST

Premier League – ARSENAL 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

The season started with probably the game I least wanted. Luckily we were at home. That said it was important not to lose on the opening day. I was tempted to start Lewandowski but instead plumped for Giroud. Insigne and Schurrle were also on the bench. Barry and Valdes starting. We were all over United in the opening stages. Both strikers should’ve scored. It continued for much of the game and we dominated but couldn’t score.

Premier League – NOTTINGHAM FORREST 2-3 ARSENAL – Kranjar 47 Cox 67 – Vermaelen 22 Walcott 39pen Giroud 83

Quite a game at Forrest. We dominated the first half and were comfortable at 2-0 up. But then Forrest started to play and pulled it back to 2-2 with Valdes also having to make a couple of very good saves. Finally though Giroud who again started upfront scored the winner and we saw it out.

Super Cup – ARSENAL 0-1 BENFICA – Berardi 78

I stuck to my rule meaning no players that weren’t involved in the last campaign were allowed to play. What I didn’t bank on were a waft of injury and suspensions meaning Gibbs, Mertersacker, Vermaelen, Wilshere, Balanta and Sagna were all missing. I played 3 at the back with Jenkinson a half fit Sagna and Koscielny. Ledson and Crowley both started. Ozil and Walcott defensive wingers. My bench read; Illev, Eagle, Mcluskey, Smith, Jebb, Range, Vietto. Unsurprisingly we lost. A defensive mix up allowing Beradi to punce and beat Zieler. We did hit the bar twice though but pleased it wasn’t a hammering. I may change my rules next year.

League Table top 5

early days

1. Man City played 3 points 9

2. West Ham played 3 points 7

3. Man United played 3 Points 7

4. Stoke played 3 points 7

5. Tottenham played 2 points 4

------------------------------

9. Arsenal Played 2 Points 4

11. Liverpool played 3 points 4

14. Chelsea Played 3 Points 3

Player of the month – Thomas Vermaelen

Always tricky after just a couple of games. The only player to get above 7 in both league games.

CS – Stoke (N) 2-1 – 7.2

PL – Man United (H) 0-0 – 7.00

PL – Notts Forrest (A) 3-2 –7.3(1)

SC – Benfica (N) 0-1 - Suspended

GAME OF THE MONTH

Chelsea 1-3 Newcastle – Mata 10 Ivanovic s/o 89 – Cisse 3 Sissoko 5 28

Not a good start on the opening day for Chelsea. They also lost the second game at Stoke.

Other Stuff

Champions League draw

Arsenal

Valencia

Basel

Lazio

Chelsea and Spurs could struggle United should get through easily. Pick of the draw was Madrids group. They are joined by Dortmund Standard and Galatasaray.

League Cup draw

Leicester City vs Arsenal

Repeat of last year. The League cup draw was less exciting. West Ham hosting United all that is interesting at this stage.

Jordan Rhodes won player of the month. Natasasic won younger player. Incidentally Chamberlain was second. Villas-boas collected the manager award with City winning their first two games comfortably.

Mertersacker won the fans player of the year.

In the transfer window Chelsea brought in Pedro Bojan and Shawcross. City signed Lucas and Rameirez. United, Spurs and Liverpool hardly spent a thing.

European wise Madrid bought Shaquiri for 39 million was the biggest signing.

Stat of the month – The World Cup

Probably the most obvious. I didn’t watch any of it. The usual shocks and surprises.

Group Stage

The group stages saw shocks galore, Nigeria beating Brazil 5-0 the standout. Argentina failed to win a game in a group with Greece(0-1), Jamaica(3-3) and Ukraine(1-1). France also failed to make it out of the group stage. Other shocks saw Trinidad and Tobago beat Denmark 2-0, In Englands group they came second behind Italy with Ghana and USA making up the numbers. Walcott hit a hattrick in the Ghana game.

Second Round

In the second round Brazil were the big casualties losing to Greece on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Spain beat Holland 2-0. England lost to Germany 1-0.

Quarter Finals

In the quarter finals Spain hit top form to thump Portugal 4-0. Greece trying to shootout their way to glory lost to Belgium. Italy beat Denmark 1-0 and Germany beat Demark 3-0.

3rd Play off

Expected to be the final but not Spain beat Germany 2-1

FINAL

Decided to start my first FM14 save off with Arsenal.

Just finished pre-season, letting my assistant take control of the games as I never bother with them. My only signing is Miroslav Klose from Lazio for £2.3m to provide cover for Giroud. Apart from that I'm happy with the squad I've got. No notable outgoings, only a few youngsters loaned out. Southampton at home first game of the season to kick everything off. Come on lads

Arsenal season 2 update

September

Premier League – CHELSEA 2-3 ARSENAL – Lampard pen76 pen78 – Insigne 22 90 Lewandowski 80

Last season at the same stage we faced Chelsea and got a 0-0. However i thought this season I would be a bit more adventurous. Walcott was missing after picking up an injury on England duty but Baines and Alonso were available. Alonso started but Baines was on the bench. Chelsea started well and we were lucky to score through Insigne. We seemed set for a 1-0 as the game became drab in the second half before referee Moss gave two debatable penalties to turn the game around. Valdez went the right way both times but couldn’t save them. I expected to a first league loss but Lewandowski showed his class to volley home a cross to get us level. We piled on the pressure late on and Insigne smashed home the winner. Great win to take to the Mestalla.

Champions League – VALENCIA 1-0 ARSENAL – Jonas 2

We started the defense of the Champions League in Spain. Jonas put Valencia infront after just two minutes in what resulted to be one of only five shots on target in the match. We were very poor. Basel beat Lazio 1-0 in the other game.

Premier League – ARSENAL 4-2 WEST BROM – Insigne 15 45 Lewandowski 25 Vermaelen 90 – Long 60 69

We were poor in Spain and were looking to bounce back at home to West Brom. We produced an outstanding performance in the first half with West Brom unable to get near the ball. Then after Ben foster had produced numerous wonderful saved and we had missed chances West Brom scored twice and my nails were starting to shorter. We held on with Long nearly making it 3-3 hitting the post. In stoppage time Vermaelen thumped in a header for 4-2.

Premier League – EVERTON 1-1 ARSENAL – Pandev 35 – Cazorla 27

Wilshere was ruled out for a month before the trip to Everton. Mertersacker was also missing. Cazorla gave us the lead before Pandev gave Everton the equaliser that they didn’t deserve. In the second half it was all arsenal Insigne should’ve scored when put clean through and then Koscielny was denied by a combination of Howard and post. Not the worst result though.

Premier League – ARSENAL 4-1 SWANSEA CITY – – Lewandowski 23 Schurrle 44 Giroud 48pen Vietto 77 – Vazquez 55

We started a joke run of three games in five days against Swansea. Chelsea went to Everton and won 4-1 which didn’t improve my mood ahead of the upcoming games. Walcott returned to the bench after injury and I started Baines for the first time as Gibbs was tired. Balanta and Vietto also started. Lewandowski gave us the lead before he limped off with an injury. Schurrle doubled the lead with a superb volley as we pressed home the advantage just before halftime. We then got a penalty when tugged at Schurrles blue shorts. (Why they are blue at home I have no idea when last season Swansea wore their away kit. An epitome of why we should be allowed to choose the kits) Anyway Giroud converted it. Vazquez pulled a goal back for Swansea from their only attempt of the game. Vietto restored the three goal cushion. We hit the woodwork six times in the game. Still no clean sheets this month. Lewandowski out for two weeks.

League Cup 3rd Round – LEICESTER CITY 2-3AET ARSENAL – – Nugent 6 12 - Nelson 33 Walcott 84 Giroud 97

The defence of the League cup started exactly where the last one did, at Leicester. On that occasion a Podolski brace saw us win 2-1. With the Basel game just two days later I named a much changed team with plenty of youngsters getting their chance to shine. The pick of them was Michael Nelson who had scored 9 goals already as well as 6 in pre season. He has hit two 5’s as well, one of which was in the league against Aston Villa. David Nugent struck twice early on and I thought we were dead but that man Nelson pulled a goal back before half time with our only shot on target of the half. In the second we were possibly worse creating nothing until Walcott used his pace to run onto a pass and round the keeper. Giroud came off the bench to score the winner in added time. 4 shots 3 goals but through. Tired legs aplenty for Basel in two days time. No clean sheets in the month.

League Table top 5

CL – Valencia – 6.6

PL – West Brom – 9.1(2)

PL – Everton – 6.5 – sub77

PL – Swansea – 7.1

LC - Leicester City – Not Selected

Game of the month

Swansea City 2-5 Man United – Rooutledge Michu – Cleverley 2 Vidic Welbeck Rooney

Déjà vu. Same stage last season Swansea lost 5-2 against Southampton and now it was Uniteds turn. They’ve made a good start. Beating Chelsea and Everton as well as Shalke. Only dropped points were at us on the opening day.

Stat of the month

Lord Nelson

I will do a stat of the month on the new signings at a later date but so far one player has caught the eye the most. Michael Nelson became the youngest player in Arsenal history when he played at Leicester City in the League Cup. 16 years and 115 days. He has shined so far from his pre season form where he had a rating of 10 in one game to both youth teams and now even the first team.

Other News[/b}

League Cup third round news. Only one surprise was Everton losing at Ipswich.

4th Round draw – Peterborough vs Arsenal

Could’ve been worse. They beat Norwich 2-1 at Carrow road.. Elsewhere Spurs host Villa and Newcastle host United.

In the monthly awards James Tomkins won player of the month. Nastasic took the young player prize again while I was pipped by David Moyes for Manager of the month.

Jordan Rhodes leads the goalscoring charts with 7 goals. Crouch on 6. A lot closer in the other lists. Michah Richards leading the way with an average rating of 7.87 while plenty of players are joined with Cazorla on 3 assists.

In the other leagues PSG are unbeaten in Ligue 1. Frankfurt are the surprise leaders in Germany although Bayern in 5th are just a point behind. Similar story in Holland where Heerenveen are top on goal difference. Madrid and Barca are going toe for toe in Spain level at the top. Both with a single draw each. First Clasico is in November while Milan top Seria

A.

The Under 21’s sit 10th at the moment. Cardiff setting the early pace. They play Southampton in the cup. The under 18’s currently lead the way in the south group. They have Chelsea in their cup.

October Preview[/b}

October sees us travel to Lazio. League games should all be won.

So unlucky in the Champions League there! /o\
Unlucky in the Champions League. Great end to the season otherwise.

Cheers guys. I was gutted with the CL result, Pizarro scored their equaliser with their last kick of the game. They scored, we went back to the centre kicked off and then the ref blew for full time and the rest as they say is history.

As this was using/testing the W-M formation I am delighted with the way the season has gone because I wasn't really expecting to win anything and my hope at the beginning of the season was to finish in the top 5 and qualify for Europe and get to the quarter finals of all the cups and the only one we missed was the FA Cup where we were beaten by WBA in the 4th round.

I am delighted with the way things have gone that I am going to do a career save using the W-M tactic.
