It was even uglier still, when the loanee, Pittman, tore a groin muscle stretching for a pass on the hour mark. While some of the Nineteen could be seen quietly cheering their chance to play, it was an ugly day indeed for FMS. It was ugliest, though, for Fantu, who had gone to the press after the Lincoln City match and asked for a better accounting of his skills. Blankley dropped him from the sixteen. Neither team looked like scoring – though there was a von Lichtenstein sighting as he came on as a late substitute for McCracken. The match marked the return of Fuller after six matches lost to injury and the keeper picked up right where he left off, keeping his fourth clean sheet of the season. With the Nineteen starting to drop like flies, the start of the FA Trophy campaign beckoned against teeny-tiny Eastbourne Town, with hopes that everyone who started a match wearing an FMS shirt could actually finish it. Eastbourne Town 1-3 FMS – 10th November 2012 – FA Trophy Third Qualifying Round Fuller, Dubb, Nygma, Martin, Adie Whitbread, Marks, Fantu, Rudyard, Joe Broad, von Lichtenstein, Rothery. Subs: van Liefthuizen, Mathieson, Conleith Corcoran, Barry Hayles, Les Afful. Goals: Eastbourne Town – Stewart Pearson 88 FMS – von Lichtenstein 1, pen 6, 53 Man of the Match – von Lichtenstein (10.0) Von Lichtenstein made a statement in the Trophy game, scoring a brace within six minutes of kickoff and finishing his hat trick in the second half as the Pens dismissed their part-time opposition. He made another statement under his shirt, with #BlankleyOut written in invisible ink on his undershirt, but only Bo Jose could read it, as the words were written in Sanskrit. The words “hat trick” were written in English, though, and plainly. With McCracken and Baroni left completely out of the squad, the match was von Lichtenstein’s to run, and he did. His match conditioning was appalling, but that was to be expected too, with the match being his first start of the season in any competition. But you could hardly argue with the results. Von Lichtenstein again found the net for the Writers – giving him five in nine appearances and four in his only two starts of the campaign – as FMS had great possession but not many chances against Eastbourne. Boro parked the bus and held FMS away from the goal for most of the match, but Marks found the range 22 minutes in and that was really more than enough. Mathieson, who had joined von Lichtenstein on the bench in protest at lack of playing time (he had played just 217 minutes all season) then watched as von Lichtenstein showed his worth. The Belgian had spent more time playing for his country (4 u-21 appearances and one u-19 game) than for his club (three substitute appearances) and he wasn’t happy about it. Yet, Mathieson was willing to put his head down in training and keep working. A sign of his character. Now he watched as 19-year old Cody Cooke and 16-year old Kieran Lawal, players with a fraction of his talent, got picked ahead. It was frustrating. But with the club winning, there was little he could do. The Nineteen were a team of their own, but Blankley was in charge even if some of their number wished otherwise. That was, until a Blankley favorite – Corcoran – injured a thigh in training for two weeks on the shelf. Subs: Bo Jose, Mathieson, Alex Burke, Barry Hayles, von Lichtenstein. Goals Salisbury – well, no. FMS – Baroni 2, 28; Marks 18, McCracken 24. Man of the Match – Clarke Cierán Clarke returned to play in great form, earning man of the match honors as the Pens pushed four past Salisbury in the first twenty-eight minutes. The win overshadowed the second sending-off of the season for captain Whitbread. As he left the pitch, second-choice keeper Bo Jose was seen holding a sign containing an arrow over Mathieson’s head for the benefit of the manager. Blankley also took some stick in his post match news conference for substituting Baroni in favor of von Lichtenstein when the Italian was on a hat trick. As for Mathieson, Blankley didn’t take the hint. But by that time Baroni had scored twice, Marks had scored for the second straight match and McCracken had also done the business (if you’ll pardon the expression). The results of the match, and the Irishman’s play at the back, also allowed The Nineteen to giggle at the next day’s headline after praise from Salisbury manager Darrell Clarke: “Clarke Impressed by Clarke”. Bo Jose then showed up at training the next day in a t-shirt reading “Ciarán Clarke Loves Himself” with van Liefthuizen offering to provide pictures. There were no takers. And then Blankley signed 17-year old winger Charlie Telfer from Rangers on a free transfer. And honest to God, he looked like he was nine years old. On double the wages of any of the Nineteen. And then … He signed Dag and Red striker Ben Strevens for free. Again, on double the wages of any of the Nineteen. And then … Fantu pulled a hamstring in training, putting him out for a month. And then … Crystal Palace sacked Ian Holloway and Liverpool sacked Brendan Rodgers. Oh, wait. Nobody cared. And then … November ended. Mercifully. Regular service had been restored, even if Blankley had decided to hand an FMS debut to Telfer right out of the package. This time, fourteen of the sixteen team places went to members of The Nineteen. The table-toppers continued their fine run of form, putting the match away in the first half hour or so before Baroni scored a Miss Congenality goal seventeen minutes from time. The team was becoming a possession machine, holding the ball for 62 percent of the match and continuing the displays that had become so commonplace over the preceding two months. The goalkeepers were watching Fuller’s return to the team with some apprehension, with Blankley preferring his vice captain, van Liefthuizen, over Bo Jose on the bench. With Fuller the clear number one for the time being, the battle for first team time between the Norwegian and the Dutchman was starting to hot up. True to form, though, Blankley chose to praise someone other than his man of the match after the contest, purring over Baroni instead. The other story of note was Nygma receiving the captain’s armband for the first time, with Whitbread suspended for picking up his second red card of the season. Blankley refused to answer a question in his pre-match news conference about when Whitbread might return to the eleven. He promptly honored the armband, and his FMS debut, by getting himself sent off for a second bookable offence in 64 minutes. On the pitch, Warner’s double was enough to ensure victory, but some of the Nineteen were scratching their heads over the manager again. Clearly there was an abundance of talent available to him but questions were starting to arise over whether he was using it properly. One player with no doubts, though, was Kowalski, who turned in another commanding performance at the back. While shaving his head after the match, he told the press he appreciated the gaffer’s faith in him while he missed two months with that broken collarbone. But when he’d played, the defender had been menacing, winning five sponsors awards in nine matches played. If only he were a couple inches taller. Goals FMS – Baroni 5, McCracken 20 – Conleith Corcoran s/o 65 Maidenhead – zilch Man of the Match – Clarke Blankley repaid Kowalski’s glowing words about him by dropping him from the sixteen against Maidenhead. That gave Clarke the chance to shine, but the biggest story of the game was another sending off of a Blankley signee, this time Conleith Corcoran. He received his marching orders for a second bookable offence just after the hour mark, forcing the Fightin’ Writers to again defend a lead with ten men. The match was slightly contentious. With van Liefthuizen preferred to Fuller in goals for the first time all season, the Dutchman lasted only seven minutes before leaving with broken ribs in a fearsome goalmouth collision which went unpenalized by the match official. He’ll have a month on the sidelines to stew about it. The keeper, not the official. Van Liefthuizen started the match as captain but didn’t finish it that way, handing the armband to Corcoran after his injury. Nygma became the team’s third captain of the match after Corcoran was sent off. Meanwhile, Kowalski sat in the stand, shaving his head and muttering. Next up: stepping up a league to play Blue Square Premier opposition Woking in the Second Round of the FA Trophy. FMS 4-0 Woking – 15th December 2012 – FA Trophy Second Round Fuller, Clarke, Nygma, Adie Whitbread, Aden Flint, Marks, Charlie Telfer, Preece, Rudyard, von Lichtenstein, Warner. Subs: Bo Jose, Kowalski, Dubb, Ben Strevens, Hochstetter. Goals FMS – Charlie Telfer 16, von Lichtenstein 23, Warner 25, 27 Woking – who are they? Man of the Match – Marks Four goals in eleven thunderous minutes propelled the Pens to a easy thrashing of higher league opposition in the Second Round of the FA Trophy at The Love Shack. Blankley’s “Jobs For The Boys” program was in full force for the Cup tie, with the suspended Whitbread and Flint both returning to the eleven with Telfer continuing his run in the first team and the forgotten man, von Lichtenstein, again scoring when allowed to play. Check that. Mathieson is more forgotten than von Lichtenstein, but that’s another story. Flint picked up another booking nineteen minutes into the match, earning him the baleful stares of FMS faithful and quiet whistles from The Nineteen. Warner upped his tally to 15 goals in 19 matches in all competitions with a brace of goals separated by just 120 seconds in the first half. After the match he could be seen soaking his boots in ice water to cool them down. In his post-match press conference, Blankley said it wasn’t likely he’d bring in any more players in the January window, but wouldn’t rule it out (cue dramatic music). He also said he expected that Warner wouldn’t let the fans’ new chant with his name in it affect his performances. The victory also increased the club’s unbeaten string in the league to twelve, setting another league record. Warner’s 18th goal of the season was the winner just after the hour mark but it was the young signee, Telfer, who continued to block other members of the Nineteen from playing time with a man of the match performance. Naturally, Blankley was pleased with the play of his starlet, but tried to avoid praising him outright to avoid the stares of his Nineteen who were gathered nearby for his news conference. But once again, Blankley didn’t rule out the acquisition of even more players in the upcoming January window. That didn’t go over well. Yet again, Dubb replaced Clarke late in the match and this time, the Irishman shot a look of annoyance at Blankley for not being allowed to finish what he started. Von Lichtenstein, for a change, didn’t score a goal when he was allowed to start, and left in favor of Warner, who picked him and the team up with a late header. The league race is all over bar the shouting. Now, it’s all about playing time.
