*Official* FM 13 Update 13.2.3 - Match Engine v1339 Constructive Discussion & Feedback

anyone else getting loads injuries? and a player sent off ever game am getting 4players injured a game and always a sending off for my team

For the first time, since release day, i'm having a injury problem.

I decided to start a new save game, i'm in November now and have 7 players injured (2 will return in one week). All injuries came from match day.

Could be just a case of bad luck. Gonna wait and see how the rest of the season goes.

I think dribbling was nerfed too much. My best player (19 dribbling, 17 technique, 17+ pace and accel) is averaging 1.5 runs past opponents per game, down from 10.

Didn't experience it on the previous patch but am suffering badly with injuries using this latest patch. Happened on the very first patch and now it's kicked in again. Have not had any issues with red cards.

There are 5111 players in my scouting range (excluding unattached players), 580 of them are currently injured.

That's 11.3%. Seems slightly high, but I don't have any RL numbers to compare that to...

But I could compare it to my pre-patch save. 72012 players, 8651 of them injured. 12.0%, no major changes there.

This ME is a lot better than the last one. The game feels a lot more organic than before.

A few things I've noticed:

Too many goals scored on the first shot on goal in the game. Currently I conceded a goal on the first shot in 5 consecutive matches.

Too many injuries. Knocks and bigger injuries, at least 3 per game seems a bit too much.

A lot of ratings feel repeated. My striker gets 8.8 ratings very often. Not 8.7 or 8.9, but 8.8 consistently.

Defenders seem to get too high ratings. This might be a coincidence, but my defenders get MOM in about 60% of games. It's a bit strange since I'm winning most of my games.

A big improvement, the game is now playable. I've been critical in the past, however I'm glad they are now sorting it out. This ME update is much more realistic, actually looks like football, no longer comical.

It's also a good thing they have finally taken their time to bring out a solid patch, instead of a weekly update which meant two steps back. I hope they keep on this track, FM 2013 finally showing signs of promise.

Another thing I've noticed is that if a corner or cross is headed/cleared back out to the player who crossed it on the full (i.e. ball not bouncing before it comes back out to him), rather than control the ball, he volleys it first time straight back into the box. This is regardless of whether he has a defender near him or is in acres of space with plenty of time.

Every single match now has yellow cards showing on the time line, before the match has even started.

I've noticed that a few times. They are yellow cards from the previous match that have stayed there for some reason. This was happening for me BEFORE the last patch and I'm pretty sure I reported it. Although maybe I didn't. At the time I was much more concerned with the pathetic ME. I've not really given the current ME a decent test drive yet, I'm excited by the thought of any improvement though, no matter how small.

Something I am seeing in this ME that I've rarely seen before:

Players trying to play the ball off someone for a throw in or corner only to miss horribly and gives it back to the opposition for a goal kick. The attempt looked like a lame cross or the ball slipped off their feet or something.

Completed a few matches. It does feel much better than before. Just a few of strange things noticed. Some may be just bad luck.

-The defenses act realistic in most situations, but when the opponent full back cut inside sometime the defender will be too hesitant to tackle. It have happened in three situation, ending in two goals and a save, where the full back hold the ball from midfield, cut inside and the defenders just kept walking backwards until the full back finished.

-I have a winger, and just this single winger, Roberto Pereyra that is a Udinese player on the database, that when get tired(maybe? it looks like...), he starts to just walk towards the defender. He will play normally until sometime in the second half, when he has the ball, he will always walk straight into the opponent player. Every time he has the ball. He will not stop, he will not pass, he will just walk towards the defender until he lost possession. Very, very strange.

And again may be bad luck, but I am noticing too many attacking faults. Sometimes the striker, or the AMC/R/L will unnecessarily slide toward the ball on the midfield, with no apparent danger whatsoever, just to be sent off for violent behavior.

The ME updates is the best for FM series. There's a few glitch like GK bug, but overall it's feel like being a real manager. I hope SI team can make the little bug fixes first before go full speed to do FM2014 ME. That's why we have the constructive discussion right?

That is slightly low if anything - for a 25 player squad 11.3% is only 2-3 per squad. Most teams have more than that IRL.

I have to say that I really like this newest update. With the last one I just immediately gave up and didn't really even try to play with it. The match engine is now better balanced even though it still lacks in realism. But I'm not one of those who want to see an exact copy of real football, balance is the main thing so that you can play in many different styles of football and still be succesful.

For future versions I would still like to see more intelligent decisions and better anticapation for defensive players. Less time and space on the pitch and you might be able to bring back that old long shot threat for players that really can shoot the ball. It would be really nice to get something out of those midfielders who can shoot. Now it seems impossible as there are too many open chances for them to shoot so long shots have to be toned down.

Good work, keep it up!

I'm really not sure what to make of this update. I've played 11 matches and had 10 wins and a draw so I can't really be critical of it as such!

I like that...

My roles really seem to dictate the way I play. I use one formation 3-3-2-2 but have two set ups for it where one is attacking WBs and the other attacks through the center. This ME really differentiates between the two. Last match I attacked down the flanks, LWB has 2 assists, RWB has an assist and a goal. Didn't really see that much difference between set ups before.

My speedy Poacher is wreacking havoc. He's scored 16 goals in the 11 games including two hat tricks. Through balls work. Possibly a little too well.

Players PPMs seem quite visible. I have a two young DMs, one has 'Gets Forward' and the other doesn't. The one that does has 5 assists in 7 games. The other has 0. You can see him bombing forward. Means I can pick horses for courses and if I want a more attacking or defensive midfield then I will select accordingly.

Or it could be that I don't like...

Defenders still play statues. Some of the reactions to the ball bouncing around the box are non existant. Reactions to through balls are slow as well. I'm able to take advantage of that.

Defenders are trying more tackles now, but I've still been 'escorted' to goal a few times where they just run along side me and allow me a free shot. When they do tackle there doesn't seem to be many fouls. I've seen some vicious lunges that have taken folks out and nothing given for them. IRL you barely have to look at someone the wrong way and you concede a free, here you can GBH them and get away with it most of the time. I haven't had a problem with red cards like some have, only seen 1 in 11 games.

That's interesting, Argente. I can't get speedy strikers to preform nearly as well as I have had before. I've had more luck with the balanced type of striker. I might be pushing up a bit too much though, but in almost a full season I've hardly ever seen any player really take advantage of their pace. They just mostly stand still when they have the ball. It might be the way I'm playing, but I'm winning so I'm not tempted to change it yet.

players picking up far too many injuries in this new patch, players who are not injury prone get injured alot of times, I get at least 1 player injured per game it's getting really annoying.. I checked injury table and every other AI team has like 5-9 players injured too!

I have him set as Target Man with supply of Run onto Ball, so that may have some impact on it as well. Not all his goals are from chasing through balls but he's got a few and had plenty more chances that he hasn't taken.

Sounds more or less like real life to me.

I don't have anything like this amount. I would say I get maybe 2 "knocks" every 3 games, and only about 1 injury every 3/4, which I consider realistic.

Do you run your players into the ground?

There will be a lot more real life injuries than you think. Currently 7 teams have more than 5 injuries in EPL. Your figures may be higher than that, but they will be balanced out by all the games in which people have lower figures.

Hi Si,

I really like this patch. Turned FM13 around completely for me. Prior to this FM I have very rarely if ever even looked at these forums, let alone posted in them. This time around after 3-4 months I was deep in FM depression and about ready to give the game away. The way I talked to my friend about this version, who has bought every FM that has ever come out, left him not wanting to purchase this version. I really appreciate the time and effort these moderators go to in assisting other players of FM, although I do tend to agree that sometimes there are flaws in the ME and when they are bought up the moderators can have a tendency to respond in a rather brash, or confrontational fashion. I personally don't find it to bad as I imagine they have a lot of repetitive posts and eventually get sick of it, but I feel with great power comes great responsibility and perhaps a little more patience should be used from time to time.

The reason I mention this is prior to this patch I could not create a tactic that worked. I followed alot of advice from guys like Cleon and wwfan, and have to admit that as much as I liked the idea of this FM being more realistic and more involved, I was disheartened to find that I would need to watch matches in full constantly, follow a 12 step program, study passing analysis screens that were just a bunch of crowded dots to me etc etc in an attempt to find a workable tactic. For those of us who have jobs and families etc, there is just not enough hours in the day to play more than 1 or 2 games a night, and when you are Everton, you want to get through the first season reasonably quickly in the hope of some transfer funds.Anyway I went through all of this, including completely changing the way I have ever played FM before, all to no avail, and all along not wanting to sound like one of those people who just blames the game or the ME for their own failings.

Anyway, since the patch has come out my tactic which was hopeless before is now brilliant. I went on a 15 game unbeaten run in the prem with Everton and am currently 25 games in one point ahead of Man Utd at top of the table in the prem. One of the main issues that I struggled with, and saw others regularly post about, was the opposition wingers and defenders seemingly able to make field-long runs and then pinpoint a cross from amongst 3 players who are not tackling him. Whenever this point was raised in various forums, I noted that moderators seem to consistently attack someone's tactics, and accuse them of just blaming the ME for their poor tactics, or not using shouts, or studying the opposition. Now that the patch has been released, it would appear that this was indeed an ME issue, as I now use no shouts, don't read opposition reports, don't use the media and as above am smashing it. And the patch notes admitted that this was an error or an over correction with the ME which has now been fixed.

All of this is to say that perhaps there does need to be some middle ground, or a voice of reason on these forums as it very much appears as a childish game of "no it's the ME" versus "no it's your tactics" and no-one really wins, particularly those of us who have beaten our pets to within an inch of their lives and screamed at the missus for the last few months, just to prevent us from smashing our own computers.

Anyway, while I was totally frustrated previously, I am now happy that I am winning, however it now seems TOO easy for the points above. I guess there is no pleasing me! :D

Some constructive criticism that I might add (some of which other people have suggested on other posts):

- If making the game more realistic and harder as per my initial experience, it would be nice if I didn't have to scour internet forums to discover things such as having a fluid philosophy means you shouldn't have too many specialist roles, and even what are considered specialist roles in the game

- I saw someone suggest that perhaps you should send through updates if and when they are fixed rather than releasing one patch with multiple fixes 6 months after the game comes out - if this is possible it is a great idea. As things stand now I will not be purchasing FM14 until after the final patch is released, as I cannot go through this all again, at which point I might as well just wait for FM15 etc etc

- Someone also suggested in another post that your assistant give you more feedback on your tactics when you are setting them up, in relation to the ME. Such as him popping up in backroom advise and saying "by the way your tactics are flawed as your winger and wingback will end up occupying the same space" etc

- So basically some more in-game help with setting up tactics would be great, particularly for those of us who have previously played the "wrong" way and just downloaded an ME exploit tactic (I did not even know these existed prior to this FM)

I understand that the ME will never be perfect but as long as it makes sense, I think the majority of fans would be happy. And any in-game help that can be provided when setting up tactics may help to cancel out alot of the ME vs tactics arguments that litter these forums.

I do feel that purchasing a game in November, for it to finally work in February is asking a bit much of the consumer, particularly when I could now pick up a fully working copy of the game for 1/3 of the price I paid for it 3 -4 months ago - but going forward I guess that just comes down to personal choice for me as in previous FM I have never noticed such a drastic turn of fortunes with a new patch.

Anyway, sorry for waffling on, and if this is off-topic slightly - but I was advised by Cleon this would be the best heading under which to post this.

Cheers,

Timbo

Oops, with that factually incorrect statement you just spoiled what was an otherwise well-written post full of good ideas.

I bought the game in October, it was full of flaws, but I've enjoyed playing it since then.

I particularly liked the idea of the Ass-man giving more information about why your tactics are weak, rather than just "missing too many passes" or whatever he says now. I do think this would be hard to do though, and runs the risk of him just telling you what to do to win, but there is definitely a good idea in there somewhere.

I hate this patch...

- too many times I my players walking with the ball until they lost possession and the computer takes advantage of it

- the ball movement seem always advantage the computer

- getting the most of the possession and shot on target but lost because that stupid walking around with the ball

- poor players decision, I still prefer the old patch. the new patch is even weirder like De Rossi rushing from the mid to 6 yard box only to clear the ball to the corner.

- pass heading, what should be an easy control ball, players tend to heads it annoyingly straight to the opposition

- Injuries problem De Rossi 4 months, Stekelenburg 7 months, totti 2 months and few others

- Long throw doesn't seem realistic, I've see Chiellini always throw ins like pirlo would kick a corner kick

- yes the defender tackles better, but they are giving away their position to reckless creating space for opponent to score too often despite the tactical set for defensive, despite the full back already cover the opposition

- team talk doesn't seem do much unlike the previous patch, it seem do more pressure to the player than encouragement

sorry this patch ruins it for me, I wish I didn't update it...

Also I understand what you mean about the possible issues of the AM just telling you how to win. But I meant more advice outside of matchday. Seriously when I look at those passing analysis screens all I see are hundreds of green dots all over the pitch, each one indistinguishable from the next. When I look at the individual players passing instructions and see that Baines only completed 70% of his passes during that game - I can safely conclude on my own that that may have something to do with why I lost the game.

What I can't figure out on my own (and this may just be my own inexperience) is why he only completed 70% of his passes. Was he marked tightly? Was he closed down? These are things that I struggle to distinguish in game when watching a full-match (and again this could just be me) that after the fact would be good to know. So the AM could say in post-game analysis "Baines struggled with passing as the opposition was consistently closing him down".

So that the next game where Baines is not completing his passes or crosses I can compare what the opposition players are doing to what they did in that preivous game and say to myself "okay, so he is clearly being hassled and perhaps I need to focus my passing through someone else for awhile, who should technically be having less attention paid to them as all attention is on Baines"..........

or something like that :)

Yeh I think it sounds like a good idea, maybe post it in the wishlist thread (incase anyone reads it!) My bit about it making it too easy was only an afterthought, my main reaction was that it was good idea. And yes, something along the lines of you personally not being satisfied with it until February would have been entirely acceptable (in my meaningless opinion).

The Ass Man giving advice in the match is so dire, imho, it's actually worse than none at all because to anyone learning the game it's actually adding to confusion. That makes it worse than pointless (again imho :D ).

Come to think of it, much of coach/ass man advice outside of the match is worse than pointless as well. Staff meetings should come with a huge disclaimer to those new to game.

Not as bad as my director.

He negotiated a loan, but I couldn't find any use for the player and ended up cancelling the loan after three months.

Two weeks later my DoF attempts to loan the same player again.

A quick few negatives regarding loose ball situations. Not gamebreakers, but they are constant annoyances which can hopefully be fixed:

1) If the ball is loose and going towards the keeper or goal line and he is under no pressure by opposition, he will still almost always leave the ball to go out for a goal kick rather than claim it. This doesn't happen in real life - keepers obviously much prefer to stop it going out so they can restart play with a short throw, etc but the AI on both sides will leave the ball instead.

2) If the defending side clears the ball away from a free kick/corner, they seem more eager to chase down the loose ball, whilst the offensive players who had stayed deep will often watch the opposition go for the ball and THEN chase the opposition, rather than try to claim the ball first or at least stay level with the opponent. They seem as an afterthought to go after the player who now already has a massive head start on them.

3) Often when a ball looks to be going out but still possibly could be stopped, all players often just give up and let it go out. This could just be a display issue in 3d, but it seems that irl players will try much harder to stop the ball going out than they do in the game.

One other thing I've noticed which is quite annoying - if a long or through ball is played in the air towards a striker or winger in space, they will often head the ball on even if there are NO MORE of their players further up the pitch. Completely illogical and ruins a lot of clever attacking plays when, for instance, the play is switched flanks with a pass towards a winger in space. Instead of trying to control the ball and then run at the opponents as would happen in real life, all too often the winger will head the ball onwards to nobody or into touch! The same often happens when a clever ball is played up towards a lone striker, who then will often head the ball onwards to.. nobody!

I agree with all of that.

One thing I think that is really noticeable is that, as the ME gets better and better, and the really obvious stupid flaws are gradually removed, the more subtle reality-reducers (for want of a better phrase) become more and more glaringly obivous. They by no means spoil the game, but they do expose its limits. Of course, given the complexity of football and human intelligence, I am not begruding the existence of those limits.

The things I mean include as the decision making and behaviours you noticed, particularly point 2, or the point Biggus D made about through balls being essentially under the control of the recipient from the moment they are made, no matter how far away from the ball they are or how many defenders are closer.

I have a few topics for discussion:

- Short passes (6-7 yards maximum) always seem to bounce off the intended reciever.

- Too many interceptions on medium range passes.

- Players (expecially in midfield) don't want to pass the ball and then starts to walk back towards their own goal and are in the end tackled.

- Long passes into space have too much power. Had I had that power in my legs, to kick a ball with that speed, I'd score many goals on long shots for my club.

- Still too many incidents of players trying to get a throw-in or a corner off an opponent.

Some of these could be my tactics. But after having played nearly 20 matches, I have not been able to get rid of these problems. It could be that my team is much poorer than the rest in the league. I do however see the AI having the same issues.

sorry, but ill be ignorant and post without reading :p I love new ME, feels much more like a real match, but there's one thing that seems fishy. Very high number of chip-through passes on short distances(hard for me to explain, if you play FIFA i mean LB+Y/L1 +"triangle"). Maybe its my tactics, but i had almost none of them pre-patch and now its happening almost with every attack.

Did it a bit of research on my squad and players who have the PPM 'Dives into tackles' definitely get a lot of bookings on this update. Both Rooney and Jones have it and both have 14 and 9 bookings each and I'm only in January. Not a bug but its worth noting if anyone is struggling with bookings. Is it possible to get them to stop diving into tackles btw and if so how?

As I understand it, the whole point of PPM's is that they over-ride to an extent the tactical instructions, and I like it this way. Someone like Lee Cattermole, or a younger Wayne Rooney isn't going to stop launching into tackles, no matter that their manager tells them. However, you can surely reduce their chances by changing their tackling to "easy" or light or whatever it is called in their personal tactical instructions.

I am giving up TONS of goals off indirect FKs. Defenders seem to watch the ball every time and let their man run past them. I had one where two defenders were on an attacker near the far post. The ball came to him (on the ground no less) and neither reacted to him as he calmly sent it home.

Thing is putting them on 'easy' would be abit dodgy no? Especially for Jones being a centre back plus I play Rooney in midfield so I need them both to tackle.

How do I try this?

Rooney just picked up his 15th and is banned for 3 games  Just into February. He's gonna end up with like 25 at this rate.

I agree it is a bit dodgy, but it is a balancing game that also exists in real life football. Either tell your player to hold back a bit and risk him miss tackles, or have him go in and risk cards.

To unlearn the PPM you try to have a conversation with them about training I believe.

Good luck. Not so much applicable to those two, but if anyone actually did have success getting that PPM removed from Lee Cattermole then I would consider the game unrealistic! Given the game mechanics I'm sure it is possible though, but he will always have high aggression.

Well, about ten more matches after my last post here and I guess when most of you mentioned "through balls", it means "passes lofted over the opponent". I don't consider these two to be the same thing. A through pass runing on the ground between the defenders' gap is more likely be received by a pacey skillful poacher, while a lofted ball would be more likely be cleared by tall defenders. A good passer should be able to choose the best killing ball option according to the receiver's ability. The passing logic may need further balancing IMO.

I dont know whats happend. Im playing with ajax and my tactic is fluid with short passes and attacking style . Before patch i always won possession for like 60-65 prc or even 70. Now i cant win any possession against lower division teams. I dont know whats wrong. Im i the only one who has the same problem or not?

Sorry for my terrible english skills ;(

Fluid means a lot of your players are on similar mentalities, which makes your side more compact to so speak, less room between the lines. And attacking makes your team play more direct football instead of building attacks and looking for an opening. I'd advice a balanced philosophy with control if you're trying to play possession based football.

I must say I'm enjoying this patch. Still some things that could be improved, but it's obvious we're seeing the true potential of the new FM13 ME now.

One thing that bothers me that I haven't seen mentioned is that there are still examples of when a player gets an assist, but should not be credited at all. An example from my last game is when my left back passed the ball to my left winger who crossed it in, only for an opposing player to score an own goal. My left back was the player who got the assist. I've seen this a few times already and I must say it slightly bothers me.

Don't you love being constantly advised to scout 2* players?

They are mainly 2.5 in mine but occasionally slightly better.

I'd also like the option of who I want to use to scout him when I tick 'scout player'. Yes, I know I could go into that player's screen and choose which scout I want a report from but I think there should be an option in the staff responsibilities page to set a default scout.

Ass Man info in-game is pretty poor too, I agree. Yes, player X is not used to closing down as much as asked but that's what I want him to do. No need to tell me all the way through the game and for the next 10 games after that......

and I know my new striker is finding it difficult to blend in with the squad...erm, that's because he's new (maybe has slightly different personality too).....

Players A and B can't motivate themselves with Player C as captain? But you've played alongside him as captain for 2yrs, never mentioned it before and results have been great.....

(this is my favourite) Their defenders are outnumbering our forwards....would that be because 99% of teams play with 4 at the back and 0% of teams start with 4 strikers?

For me, FM13 is most disappointing experience I have ever had. It start very promising and end up with disappointment.

Agreed 100%!

Before buying FM 2014 I will think over and over my decision ...

Sigames must now regain my trust as customer.
