Match Engine Update 13.2 - ME feedback here please.

Firstly I would like to thank the guys at SI for getting a patch out before the holidays however I am very disappointed to say that this patch is truly truly awful I mean effing terrible.

Before people start debating tactics I have grudgingly embraced the TC in this version of FM even though it still feels like I've lost half the fun of the game doing it. I followed the 12 step guide and researched shot combinations until I knew what each one of them did etc. I do not change any player settings at all.

Even though the last ME version had its flaws it was certainly on the right tracks with shots and passing - closing down and tackling was brilliant. I was getting great results playing with an average Hearts side joint top with Celtic and doing great in the Euro cup playing a defensive counter attacking game.

Since updating last night Results have been worse but OK not losing by or seeing an extreme amount of goals like others who I suspect are playing with or against very creative and talented sides

Getting to the point - watching the ME is an insult to my eyes right now. Closing down is gone to the extreme and beyond I watched a goal I scored where SIX yes SIX including my CB who came all the way to the opposition left back position in the opposition half to win the ball run at the goal keeper shot straight at him and scored from a rebound! Yes I had the shout hassle opponents on but in the all my life of playing FM I have never seen that LOL I had a deep D line as well! Even with the shout stand of opponents applied they still run around like idiots and don't keep their shape like they did before

Tackling - What the hell has happened its like closing down has turned into a ****ed up game of 'your IT' they run up to the opposition sometimes even stand literally in front of them or next to them but don't tackle and then back off and off and off until a long shot, Cross or wonder goal dribble happens

According to team comparison page my team has the best tackling and work rate in the league and that showed pre patch hence the hard tackling counter game which really worked.

Longs shots are stupid even when they are set to rarely, passing options are there with passing set to direct and creative freedom sparingly used they still decide the blast it at the poor souls in the crowd

Passing seems to have got worse players seem to have an obsession of passing back to the goal keeper regardless of the mentality even if they have an attacking mentality, 'pass the ball into space' and 'get ball forward' my midfielders who aren't DMs in any way decide to launch it back to our goalie which normally results in an opposition corner because the pass was crap I could understand that if they were under pressure and didn't have passing options but how do you expain that when the opposing team is parking the bus?!

Another gripe that has been really bugging me is the majority of people saying you have to change your tactics post patch WHY?! surely everyone is creating tactics to exploit strengths in the team you operate and weaknesses in the opposition not because we are playing to the strengths of a match engine whats the point otherwise?!

The games turned into a digtal game of Top Trumps of who has the best and quickest dribblers and long shot specialists, theirs your exploit right there!!

I could go on and on but all in all don't really know what else to do. I don't know what is a bug and what isn't anymore!! I feel less in control then I ever have! I like everything about the game apart from when it comes to playing the match! Id be astonished to see another update before the end of Jan and I can't bring myself to play it right now which is a real shame because I am big fan of the series

I'm sure SI keeps backups of their ME's can i sugest SI to release the last ME as an update on steam while they are working on fixing the issues on this one? Although there's plenty of good in this patch imho, there are more "gamebreakers" than on the patch before. Could this at least be considered as i do think people won't be happy waiting for next patch with the game on this status.

Can I ask a small thing ?

When people are posting their feedback can they maybe say what team they are playing?

I am just wondering if it is just the higher rep teams that are having so much trouble with the patch or are lower leagues also having these problems?

I only ask as I know how frustrating it is when someone says they are having no problems and you tearing your hair out at what you are seeing in the highlights.

As I posted earlier I am having a great time with the patch but I am playing as Tonbridge in division 1 so maybe that is the reason.

after new patch during motivation talk when manager is talking to one player before and at half time than somebody else is reacting. it was working fine before the update,really anoying.

I believe they said that was intentional and was happening before the patch anyway.

This. I am tired of re-learning the game with every update.

I am also tired of setting up everybody on "standard" and hope for the best (twelve step guide).

I'm not going to comment on the update yet as I've only managed to play 3 matches with it. I found one GUI bug (yellow cards from previous match showing in timeline bar of next EPL match) but it resolved itself so no complaints here. However, I've seen a couple of comments along this line in the past couple of days and I feel it's worth saying this: it's an ME feedback thread and people are (rightly or wrongly) giving feedback on the ME. Changes have been made to the ME, so it is to be expected that tactics will have to adapt. SI are doing their best to simulate the beautiful game and heck, practice makes (almost) perfect (I sincerely doubt that the notion of perfection shall ever exist on this forum, let alone in the eye of a football fan). If SI find an issue or what they believe to be an exploit, of course players will have to adapt. At least they are good enough to engage with the community, make regular updates and acknowledge mistakes or errors. I have seen many developers who have failed to do any of these (as an extreme example, see the recent War Z debacle). As I say, I'm not going to comment on the latest ME patch as I haven't had enough play time, although first impressions suggest a higher mean shot-per-game, but I felt the need to comment on the 'I shouldn't have to change my tactics' school.

I wonder if SI Towers people got fed up with all the bickering in the last thread and so thought right then, they want more shots, let's give them more shots! They want the AI's wingers closed down better, let's give them 5 players to close him down! They want more excitement, let's give them Mr Messi! Now leave us alone whilst we try and sort out a proper update after xmas! :D

Just a note for those who are saying there won't be another patch or hotfix until February or whenever- you don't know that. If SI deem it is required (and judging by some of the ill effects of the latest patch), they will do it. Of this I have faith.

Back in FML days, they had a hotfix for one particularly ugly ME update ready within 48 (possibly even 24) hours- and it worked. I forget exactly what the problem caused was- possibly completely neutering GKs, from memory. Granted, different delivery platform, "smaller" game perhaps, but it is unfair to suggest they will not release any further update until February, IF they reach the conclusion that it's necessary. At the moment, there are a lot of games being played, a lot of data being provided and a real mixed bag of feedback. Yes, some people are clearly getting unrealistic scores. Yes, the frequency of Messi dribbling as a complaint suggests there's something in that too. But there are also people reporting that it is not causing issues and, indeed, is an improvement over 13.1.3.

It is frustrating, no doubt, if you are encountering these problems. It may screw up your save game, and that is, of course, extremely regrettable. But they're not doing it on purpose- there is no benefit whatsoever to SI to deliberately make something work worse than it did before. This is a constructive feedback thread. Only by being constructive is it going to help SI identify the root and cause of the problem, and only by being constructive is the game going to improve.

I find it hard to believe that this update was tested ! wow goal from everywhere on the pitch, getting between 4 and 12 goals pr. game. you need a shotgun to stop a dribbling player now.

Exactly. If testing did take place then may I suggest that the first step towards fixing the ME, before any new patch is released, is that the 'testing' process is entirely overhauled. I'm not convinced that the current system of putting out something that within just a few matches is so obviously flawed is fair on paying customers. Enough's enough.

That's not a bug, that's intentional. For example, if you had a go at a player for a awful half, his mate in the dressing room may react in a different way (say he gets angry or wants to play better so his friends bad performance is overlooked).

But when you make a double substitution and you tell player A that you have faith and he does not react and then you tell player B that you have faith, suddenly player A is happy and there is no reaction from Player B, that is unrealistic. I reported this in the last patch, obviously they did not fix it because I am still experiencing this. Player A would not become happy because you told player B that you have faith in Player B and yet when you told player A that you have faith in him, he did not react. That does not make any sense.

I didn't say I agreed with it just pointing out that it's how they work now, I don't much like the idea either.

The shots at goal are insane, there are way too many and the long shots still all miss. Not only that they miss by so far it's pathetic. If I saw 10 long shots I would expect at least half not to hit the corner flag. It really is painful to watch. I won't even go into the jet pack wearing messi like gods in League 2...........

It is worse now. A player receiving an individual team talk at half-time never reacts before you give another player an individual team-talk. This didn't happen before the patch, then it was only when substituting more than one player at a time you would get that bug. A workaround is to say what you need to say to the player you want to talk to, then say something that is unlikely to cause an adverse reaction, like telling a player on a yellow card that he should be careful. Of course, it is impossible to say if the player actually do get the effects of the team talk even though the screen does not display a change.

I scored 145 league goals last season with Verona (442 MR/ML setup), 50% from crosses and headers. This patch I about 1% are heading goals from crosses and 99% missing sitter headers. I get alot more shots than before, totally useless ones. Wingers might dribble alot but for no use, they are just terrible. Cutting inside and shooting with wrong foot for no reason. Crosses are also aimed very badly this patch. While I agree crosses should get nerfed, this is just too much.

Can anyone realistically tell me how is it that Hearts can re-work a 0-3 first leg dissatvantage and beat Sporting 4-0 in the Europa League Playoffs? Seriously, since when is Fabrizio Zambrella able to score two 40 yarders and have a stormer of a game? Is this really real life football management like? Every single time/

Weirdly this happened to my games since beta release, but when I mentioned it nobody seemed to be having the problem, nor did anyone else I see mentioned so I've just kind of learned to live with it as a quirk. Glad to see some airtime. :D

On one other note, Patching via steam. I would have preferred not to have patched yet until i was sure I would be confident with this patch. However despite having FM13 set not to automatically update it still did. I cannot keep steam in an offline mode as I play other games online which is what caused me to patch up. I'm not advocating SI stop using steam I have many a game on their platform and find it very good. Whether the auto patching of my game was a steam issue or an SI issue as steam will remain the chosen method of installing FM if there is a way to stop auto patching in the future that I would like. Non of my other games auto patch when I selected the option not to do this.

A few people have suggested they give 24 hours notice of an "update" I think that's a reasonable request but with the proviso that SI will only fully support the latest version.

Well, after some testing I finally managed to make my team play football again. Pre-patch I had to increase tempo from nearly slow to nearly quick while maintaining medium passing range in order to get the combination of possession and quick attacks that I like. This was a change from FM11/12 where the tempo had to be nearly slow to get the same effect. I tried this again and reduced passing range a bit more to be almost aligned with the tempo, and my Lazio team began passing the ball. My wingers had their RWB reduced to Sometimes and they now do it sometimes rather than always. The strikers suddenly joined the attacking play and contributes with other stuff than finishing at goal from crosses.

I think that the problems many users experience right now; extreme dribbling raids from wingers, weird closing down and lack of positional awareness for defenders, disconnected play, poor decisions - the attacking issues may be caused by the tempo slider (for TC users; the Strategy, for instance Attack) not being aligned with passing range (passing style iirc, for instance Shorter). The defensive issues may be caused by a misalignment between the Defensive Line, Mentality and Closing Down. If you play with a deep defensive line, which was a good idea in 13.1.3 (for instance going Counter), then having set the tactic to Press More and/or using the Hassle Opponents shout or using OI, you're giving conflicting instructions and then you have a defence backing off while closing down. AKA chaos.

First game, my keeper kicks the ball twice to the midfield, from one side of the area, two goals from midfield. Rossi misses two penalties for my team (one of them hitting a lob like Zidane or Abreu, first time I see that). They got one midfielder sent of and I end shoting 20 times, 8 clear cuts. The match ended 2-2. Bad luck, I will keep playing a little, I don't believe it will happen every time.

Prior to this patch, this also happened to me at HT. I would give a teamtalk, then give an individual talk and suddenly someone else would become irrate, then I would talk to that person and it would start a knock-on effect. Only happened in a couple of matches, but it did happen so I reported it.

I bet the SI team and the tactical gurus are all sat playing with the 'real' update whilst the rest of us on here get this comical update as punishment for complaining. :D

im not playing anymore until a new ME comes out. tried everything but the "tone down long shots" is just a huge lie, as my players, from different teams, on different saves, shoots from distance. and very often upwards the goal... this leads to points in rugby. but Messi or Neymar arent Dan Carter, so i dont know why the ME makes them looks like him.

this version is light years worser then the one before. and the one before was far from good... FM12's engine wasnt perfect, but was really faaaaaaaaaaaar better than the craps im seeing since november 2nd.

PS: i won about 10 champions leagues in all my saves, but i simply cannot get a team to play something at least a bit similar to football. i score from long balls, set pieces or counter attacks. even if im having world class players... if opponents sit back, then my midfielders start to attempt rugby conversions.

please, at least make a ME where orders that are given to players are obeyed, so, if i say SHORT passing, and NO SHOOTING, they pass short and dont shoot... i think this is quite plain and simple.

and... speaking of rugby... there are the same or even more injuries than rugby... maybe there are scrums but arent shown on highlights

The main problem I keep having is that my players stamina/condition drop stupidly low after just one game, for example W.Rooney went from 100% fit and healthy down to 65% at half time and he was not carrying any knocks or injuries. But this seems to happen to most of the squad varying from player to player their condition drops to 65%-75%.

Before the last patch (13.2) it was fine and I would have said realistic given the flow and tactics used...but even if I play low or high tempo tactics the same issue occurs. It feels like the players are not being rested before and after a match despite the fact the boxes are ticked for them to have a rest before and after each match, my other settings also include having the team general training on team cohesion and tactics only.

Thus losing players to injury too often and results being more unbalanced as I can't rotate my squad efficiently.

Is anyone else getting something similar happening or am I just not compensating for something with in the new patch?

I'm just not seeing whatever everyone else is. Please don't think this is me defending SI because I was very critical of the last ME but this one seems fine to me. Not like I'm saying that and winning every game either. I'm 12th with Forest but that's mainly down to an error or two on my part plus Lee Camp missed a few games. Not seeing a ridiculous of goals or shots that others have reported. Long shots are certainly more frequent but again it seems about right to me. Only criticism I'd have is for me their are still too many silly errors by defenders and keepers but nowhere as bad as the 13.1.3 patch. I'm wondering whether I may notice these bugs people are reporting more in a higher league. Certainly not seeing them so far with Forest.

Can we get any information about hotfix? there are alot of positive changes.. maybe use rule of thumb next time? dont fix what aint broken..

yeah lower leagues are fine because players are just worse and unable to pull of magic trics.. it might actually be a good idea to start a new save with some 'bad' team..

I've replayed the same game now 3 times away at Spurs, I'm WBA, and on each game Gareth Bale has had 27, 35, and 37 runs per game! Utter madness! He just runs 70 yards with the ball past everybody, I've ended up losing 3-1, 1-0 and 2-1 so score wise it's been OK but the amount of dribbling going on in the ME is a massive oversight and needs tweaking urgently please as it's borderline unplayable due to how unrealistic it makes the match

If anyone is playing as a 'bad' team, and isn't getting any of the issues that people are reporting here, subscribe to the EPL and view the highlights of a game featuring the top sides and see if, indeed it is, just a problem with the better teams.

I have to say that i nearly never post in these forums but always keep track of what's going on.

I am just absolutely appalled with this update. Like a few people here i was absolutely enjoying FM and suddenly this update just ruined the whole game for me. Is there any way i can revert to the previous version without having to do a complete system restore?

I absolutely loved the passing game and now this absolute bullsh!t of an update has destroyed it. Anyways what can i say, i don't usually post but this has totally p!ssed me off... wish you guys would do more beta testing on the damn update before fully releasing it(or if you want us to be your damn beta testers make sure you give us a damn option to opt in or out). Absolutely p!ssed!!!!

Dear BiggusD

I did exactly what you are suggesting and in my case it is simply not working. I still can see 3 goals per half of the match scored in Messi style by players which are not Messi. At the end of the day it is no pleasure to work with tactic just to have more or less realistic picture of the game. In my opinion player should be focus on creation of winning tactic, proper preparations, transfers, etc. For me FM 2013 it is simply not finished product. Difference compare to previous versions is that SI trying to iprove situation making it worst and worst. Instead of not important at all stadium details they shoud focus on match engine which is key (for me - at least).

I am ready to pay another couple of Euro just for actual database for FM 2012 and forget about FM 2013. I bought the game already 2 months ago (paid for demo or beta), wasted a lot of time and I still can not have even 30% satsfaction of FM 2012. I understand that SI have army of loyal fans (I used to be) which are buying their products all the time but they should reconsider some "improvements" in the future if they want to keep this army. This game is more and more similiar to FIFA Manager which in my opinion not the right direction. Lesson was taken - next payment for SI: March 2014 (in the best case).

Running some tests in a new season as manager of Man City in holiday mode.

Dribbling: Averages are far too high. dyer with over 15 per match just as an example. In Spain the average is 4.89 for Mr Messi and in Scotland the average is 3.97. Why so high in England?

Tackling: Again, way too high. In no uncertain terms should they be getting anywhere near what this is showing. I raised this previous patch in the bugs forum, obviously they did not fix this.

Distance Covered: The average Premier League player runs 7 miles per match. 8-9 miles is simply way too high in these results. Interestingly, in Spain the avg distance is 6.2 miles for the top runner and in Scotland it's 6.3 miles. Again, why so high in England?

Results for Man City: 12 clean sheets in 17 matches, quite impressive, realistic? I'll let you be the judge of that. Lose 6-0 Away to Barcelona and then the very next match hammer Chelsea 7-0. Realistic? again, I'll let you be the judge of that. Chelsea had 6 bookings, 1 sent off in the 76 min, but the score was already 7-0 so there was nothing to make this crazy scoreline. We had 21 shots, 15 on target, 10 long shots, chelsea had 11 shots, 4 on target, 8 were long.

messi scored 5 goals in the 6-0 drubbing, Barcelona had 22 shots, 18 on target, 5 long shots, to our 2 shots and 0 on target. Messi also had 21 dribbles that match.

Just these simple tests show some glaringly obvious flaws within the game. It really does mystify me as to how the elite at SI Towers did not spot any of these out of proportion statistics.

If you can quickly do this test and have obviously high dribbles per match, then what was the testing team doing. Maybe it's time SI increase the testing team and use people on this forum.

To be fair guys few FM's do end up the finished product!! ;-) FM12 had issues with CM's and AM's not tracking back right up until the end and people after the last patch were still playing DM's to cover the lack of tracking so it's nothing new. At the same time though it is only fair to say SI did sort a lot of issues out as well. However I must say there are some glaring issues here with dribbling and long shots I think that we are all agreed (well most of us), sadly however my players don't seem to have the dribbling bug. I did I confess try and take advantage by giving wingers RFD often but they just ran into the opposition!!! I have gone back to mixed and to be fair they have returned to normal. Just crap rather than totally crap!!

Long shots.... I have just played Barnsley away and had 21 shots - 17 from outside the area with all players on long shots rarely.... To be fair one went in, but more worryingly that meant I only had 4 shots inside the area despite total domination. It would be interesting to see if for others shots inside the area have gone up from the previous patch or whether the massive increase in shots is down to these long range efforts alone??? If that is the case then that would be a major disappointment programming wise that shots have been increased by only long range efforts.

On the upside I scored two headers from free kicks which is nice and seemed to have sorted closing down a bit by decreasing my CD for defensive players yet increasing it for attacking players. With CD a few clicks below mentality my DM who plays in the CM slot sits and anchors quite well presently. No idea how you do that in the TC. Did try two matches with the TC and won one and drew the other but I must say it was like things were on autopilot so have gone back to classic.

Here's my experience with the latest ME:

- Crazy scorelines

- Messi style dribbling for non Messi (3 Goals of the months, all 3 beating 2-3 players before scoring)

- Crossing seems to be better, the ball floats better

- Closing down in midfield is ok but sucks in defense

- Defender, especially fullbacks, seems to be accompanying the opponent's strikers as opposed to marking them

- Grouping of defenders, 3-4 defenders running after the ball

- Goalkeeper weird saving actions (I had one where the ball went in, ruled offside, and then the GK attempted to make a save after the fact that the ball has gone in)

I must say it's kindof a weird ME update.
