If you ever wanted a challenge on Football Manager...

--------------------------

Brief History

Portsmouth Football Club was founded in 1898, the land in Goldsmith Avenue that became Fratton Park, the only home that the club has had, cost £4,950. The company formation costing £8,000 in £1 shares, guided by Brickwoods brewery boss John Brickwood. Pompey became Portsmouth Football Club Ltd in 1912. Prior to 1898 a local solicitor Arthur Cogswell had started an amateur team including one player, A.C.Smith goalkeeper, who was actually Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Now universally known as Pompey the teams original nickname was the Shrimps due to their salmon pink kit.

The club's first manager was Frank Bretell and under his management the club had a successful opening season winning 20 of their 28 league games in the Southern Division, finishing runners up to Tottenham. The club had an excellent FA cup run in the 1928/29 season, only to lose 2-0 to Bolton in the final. Portsmouth won the FA cup in 1939, beating Wolves 4-1 in the final. This win producing the FA cup trivia question, which club has held the FA cup for the longest period? Due to the outbreak of WW2 Pompey didn't return the cup until the competition resumed after the war in 1945. Pompey won the League 1 (Top Division in England at the time) Championship 2 seasons in succession in 1948/49 and 1949/50 with goals from players such as Peter Harris and Ike Clarke. Aside from this successful early period Portsmouth have had a less successful time in the modern era. They earned promotion back to the 1st division under the management of Alan Ball, but only remained for 1 season 1987/88 before being relegated.

Under the control of Chairman Milan Mandaric who bought the club in 1998 and manager Harry Redknapp Pompey won the 1st division championship in the 2002/03 season, promoting them to the Barclays Premiership for the first time. After keeping the team in the Premiership for the first season Redknapp left the club under acrimonious circumstances mid way through the 2004/05 season, to the outrage of Pompey fans, joining arch rivals Southampton. The irony of this being when Pompey beat Redknapp's Southampton team 4-1 at Fratton Park toward the end of the 2004/05 season, Southampton eventually being relegated. Harry Redknapp surprisingly returned as Pompey manager in December 2005, after the departure of French manager Alain Perrin, Redknapp started to rebuild the squad and Pompey managed to narrowly avoid relegation, which had seemed inevitable most of the season.

FA Cup - The Only Recent Glory

After an absence of nearly 60 years Portsmouth fans enjoyed their long-awaited day at Wembley in the FA Cup final, celebrating in style as the team ran out 1-0 winners against Cardiff City to claim the coveted trophy and return it to the South coast. After an eventful run to the final, defeating Manchester United away from home along the way, Portsmouth walked out onto the hallowed turf as favourites and duly dominated large portions of the game, taking the lead mid way through the first half before going on the attack to pressure the Cardiff back line. It was a deserved victory, and was the first time since 1995 that a club outside of England s Big Four has lifted the trophy. Many heroes graced the pitch that day as David James once again proved his class through an assured display; Glenn Johnson, whose tireless work down the right flank, was rewarded when he crossed for the goal; and Kanu who completed the fairytale with the winning strike. After years of trying Harry Redknapp finally realised the dream and led his team to his first major domestic trophy as manager. But the day truly belonged to the fans and the lasting memory will be the Pompey chimes bellowing out from the first whistle to the last.

Personally, my highlight of the 2008 Cup win was in the quarter finals against United. A game which we certain to lose according to all the press and media.

Man United had loads of chances and it was either pure luck or sheer determination we got away with a 1-0 win. The main part of the match that sticks in my head is the Glen Johnson header off the line, right place right time!

2008winners.png

Portsmouth FC's road to the 2010 FA Cup Final was "paved with anything but gold", as one commentator described it, but to the supporters, it meant everything.

It meant everything because, for an entire season, the world just seemed to crumble around Fratton Park. New owners took over the club and promised luxuries they never delivered, therefore dumping the club further into debt (which at one point exceeded over 70 million pounds), players had to be sold during the transfer window to raise funds which would be used to keep the club alive, which decimated the club to the bare bones. And, to top it all off, the club entered administration in March 2010, and was officially relegated to the Championship the following month, after a nine-point deduction was placed over the club's head for entering the administrative phase.

It all came together to create a horror year. But that didn't stop the players, the fans, or manager Avram Grant. They joined forces to revolt against all the bad stuff and bring some much needed joy to a gloomy season. A team with no money, not many fit players and an administrator running the place were now staring down the barrel of official Premier League relegation, but also a dream FA Cup final date. The match would be played against either Tottenham or Fulham. Spurs came out the eventual winners of the replay, and that meant that Pompey were on an FA Cup collision course with Harry Redknapp, the man who took Portsmouth all the way to Cup glory in 2008.

So, there they stood, proudly donning new Kappa jerseys, in front of 35,000 Portsmouth supporters in London at the national stadium, representing a club that had been through so much this season, yet had never given up. Heart, pride, passion and determination got the better of Redknapp's Tottenham outfit on the day, as Frederic Piquionne and Kevin Prince-Boateng sealed an incredible win for Portsmouth. Although Portsmouth lost in the final, 1-0 to Chelsea. The win over Spurs in the Semi-finals will be something I will always remember!

Portsmouth's Dubious Owners, Money Problems and Administration Timeline

- January 2006

Portsmouth was bought by businessman Alexandre Gaydamak whose funding allowed for the club to buy practically a whole new squad mid-season. With large amounts of money available for the manager to make record signings, the club finished the 2006–07 season in the top half of the table for the first time, only one point short of European qualification.

Alexandre Gaydamak

- May 2009

Portsmouth accepted a bid from United Arab Emirates businessman Sulaiman Al Fahim to buy the club.

- July 2009

Al Fahim was appointed Non-executive Chairman of Portsmouth.

alfahim.png

Sulaiman Al-Fahim

- August 2009

Portsmouth announced on their website that a rival consortium headed by current CEO Peter Storrie had also made a bid for the club; unknown at the time, this was backed by Ali Al-Faraj. Despite this, Al Fahim completed the takeover on 26th August; Al Faraj moved to review a takeover of West Ham United

farajstorrie.png

Peter Storrie & Ali Al-Faraj

- October 2009

The finances dried up and the club admitted on 1st October that some of their players and staff had not been paid. On 3rd October, media outlets started to report that a deal was nearing completion for Ali Al-Faraj to take control of the club. On 5th October, a deal was agreed for Al-Faraj and his associates via BVI-registered company Falcondrone to hold a 90% majority holding, with Al-Fahim retaining 10% stake and the title of non-executive Chairman for two years. Falcondrone also agreed a deal with Gaydamak the right to buy, for £1, Miland Development (2004) Ltd, which owns various strategic pockets of land around the ground, once refinancing is complete.

- December 2009

It was announced that the club had failed to pay the players for the second consecutive month, on the 31st it was announced player's wages would again be paid late on 5th January 2010. According to common football contracts, the players then had the right to terminate their contracts and leave the club without any compensation for the club, upon giving two weeks notice. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) filed a winding-up petition against Portsmouth at the High Court in London on 23rd December.

- February 2010

It had become apparent to the club's new owner Balram Chainrai that Portsmouth were approximately £135 million in debt so to protect the club from liquidation, Chainrai placed the club into administration on 26rd February 2010, and the club appointed Andrew Andronikou, Peter Kubik and Michael Kiely of accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young as administrators.

chainrai.png

Balram Chainrai

- March 2010

The winding up order was dropped when the club went into administration. This automatically incurred a nine-point penalty from the FA Premier League which came into effect on 17th March and resigned the team to almost certain relegation, which was mathematically confirmed on 10th April.

- August 2010

Balram Chainrai completed his takeover of the club and passed the owners and Directors F&PPT. On 22 October, Portsmouth issued a statement saying: "it appears likely that the club will now be closed down and liquidated by the administrators" but key creditor Alexandre Gaydamak announced the next day that he had reached an agreement which could save their future. It was revealed just hours later that Portsmouth had finally come out of administration, with Balram Chainrai regaining control of the company.

- June 2011

Convers Sports Initiatives owned by Russian Vladimir Antonov completed its takeover of the club.

- November 2011

A Europe-wide arrest warrant was issued for owner of Portsmouth, Vladimir Aleksandrovich Antonov, by Lithuanian prosecutors as part of an investigation into alleged asset stripping at Lithuanian bank Bankas Snoras, which is 68% owned by Antonov and went into temporary administration the previous week. Operations in another of Antonov's banks, Latvijas Krajbanka were suspended by Latvian authorities on 22nd November 2011 for similar reasons. Antonov was subsequently arrested at his offices in London on 24th November and has been bailed.

lucaw.png

Vladimir Antonov

- November 2011

Antonov resigned as chairman of Portsmouth after parent company Convers Sports Initiatives entered administration. On 24th January 2012, Portsmouth were issued with a winding up petition by HMRC for over £1.6 million in unpaid taxes, which was heard on 20 February.

- February 2012

Portsmouth went into administration for the second time in two years, bringing them an automatic 10-point deduction. Administrator Trevor Birch admitted that the financial situation was "worse than we first feared" and that Portsmouth were "struggling to make the end of the season".

- July 2012

It was announced on Portsmouth's website that the club was likely to have no alternative but to close (possibly go defunct) on 10 August unless the remaining senior first team players agreed to transfers and/or sign wage compromise deals.

- October 2012

The administrators named the Pompey Supporters Trust as its preferred bidder.

Fratton Park

Fratton Park is the home stadium of Portsmouth F.C., the city's traditional professional football club, and is situated in the English city-port of Portsmouth. The stadium is an intimidating one for visiting supporters, mostly because of the close proximity between the pitch and the stands. The loyal support of the club can often create a very loud and atmospheric game: famously during a UEFA Cup game in 2008 AC Milan star Ronaldinho said that: "It was the best atmosphere in the world of football". The game where Portsmouth drew with the Italian Giants.

The stadium currently has four stands, all seated. The pitch runs from east to west. The largest and most modern stand, at the ground's western end, is the Fratton End (commercially known by its sponsor name as JobSite UK stand). Along either side of the pitch are the North and South stands, both of which are two-tiered. At the eastern end is the Milton End (sponsored as Apollo stand), by far the smallest stand. Formerly the only roofless stand in the Premier League, a roof was added before the 2007/08 season. This stand is shared between home and away supporters. The original entrance to the Fratton End is notable for its mock Tudor façade. Following the arrival of former owner Alexandre Gaydamak several renovations were made to Fratton Park, including improved dressing rooms, the above-mentioned roof over the Milton end and a big-screen above the police box between the North Stand and Milton End. The North Stand was refreshed for the 2010/2011 season with renewed sponsorship by Mercedes-Benz (Ridgeway Group) which replaced the "Fratton Park Portsmouth" and the club crest.

Club Colours & Kit

Portsmouth's first ever kit had a shirt that was salmon pink in colour with white shorts and maroon socks. This kit lasted until 1909 when they changed to white shirts with royal blue shorts and socks. This kit lasted just two years before it was changed for blue shirts, white shorts and black socks. This was Portsmouth's home strip up until 1947 when the socks were changed to red; this coincided with the club's most successful period and has remained the favoured colours for the majority of the time since. Yellow and - more recently - gold have also been used as secondary colours on the club's home shirts.

kitlq.png

2012/2013 Home/Away Kit/Third Kit

The most frequent away colours used by Portsmouth have been white shirts with royal or navy blue shorts and either blue or white socks. The club has had white as either the second or third choice shirt for every season since 1998–99 to date. Other colours that have appeared several times on Portsmouth change kits have been yellow (usually with blue shorts) and red (often combined with black). Portsmouth have also briefly experimented with salmon pink, orange, navy blue and, perhaps most notably, gold change strips. From the 2006–07 season to the 2008–09 season the club have used black with a gold trim as their third choice colours. In the 2009–10 season the third kit was black with blue trim and thin blue hoops. The away kit was white with two navy blue vertical lines running the whole way down the side of the shirt, with the badge superimposed on top of them. The home kit has been the classic red white and blue kit, with plain blue shirt, plain white shorts and plain red socks. For the 2010 FA Cup Final, Portsmouth wore a change kit of white, maroon and pink.

Crest

The official emblem contains a gold star and crescent on a blue shield, Portsmouth's adoption of the star and crescent (usually synonymous with Islam) is said to have come from when King Richard I, granted the city "a crescent of gold on a shade of azure, with a blazing star of eight points" which he had taken from the Byzantine Emperor's standard of Governor Isaac Komnenos, after capturing Cyprus.

Throughout its history Portsmouth have tried different variations of the crest before reverting back to the basic gold star and crescent. In the 1950s and 1960s the traditional crest was emblazoned on the shirt in white rather than gold but this was due to white being a cheaper alternative. Between 1980 and 1989 the club scrapped the original crest and replaced it with a new design. This crest showed a football on top of an anchor (representing the navy) and a sword (representing the army). An interchangeable version included a circular version of the star and crescent crest in place of the football. The return of the original crest in 1989 only lasted 4 years when it was replaced by the city's coat of arms in 1993. This design was based around the basic star and crescent but was unpopular with many fans who thought it was over elaborate. After only four seasons the original crest was again reinstated. In time for the 2007 season "Since 1898" was added to the badge underneath the club's name.

On 6th May 2008 Portsmouth FC unveiled a new crest which differs significantly from the old crest. It removes the 'three points' and the 'star and moon' now have a three dimensional look. The 'moon' also has more diameter and looks quite like the city's Coat of Arms.

Current First Team & Analysis

Goalkeepers

GK - Simon Eastwood - #13 - Eastwood chose to take a trial with Portsmouth, his contract with Bradford was rescinded, stating the club would not interfere his way. After featuring all the friendly match, Eastwood joined Portsmouth on 13th August 2012, on non-contract terms, one day ahead of their League Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle.

piceastwood.png

Simon Eastwood

Analysis - Due to short term loans not being on FM, this leaves us with just Eastwood in goal (Andersen is on loan from Reading). The only action Simon should see is in pre-season, once a takeover is complete and Portsmouth can sign loans again, the first position you should even think about looking at is GK. Eastwood will be fine as emergency back up, but definitely look to loan in a youngster/reserve from the Premiership. Connor O'Hara could even replace Eastwood as second choice from your u18s. Personally, when Eastwood's contract is up in October, let him go and promote O'Hara for back up for whatever loanee you have brought in.

- Target: Martinez (Arsenal, Loan), Andersen (Reading, Loan), Steer (Norwich, Loan), Etheridge (Fulham, Loan)

- Youth Prospect: Connor O'Hara

Fullbacks

RB - Mustapha Dumbuya - #2 - He made his debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Bournemouth in League One. During his first month at Fratton Park he impressed and gained the respect of the fans with some great performances, including a fantastic solo run in a game against Colchester United dashing from his own box to the opposition setting up Jordan Obita for Portsmouth to pick up a 90th minute equaliser.

LB - John Harley - #3 - Harley made his debut in a Npower League 1 match against AFC Bournemouth, the match ended 1-1. He scored his first goal for Pompey in a 2-1 defeat away to Stevenage on October 24th 2012, the goal came early in the second half from outside the box but the strike wasn't enough to clinch a point for the blues.

picdumbuya.png

Mustapha Dumbuya

Analysis - Very short of naturals for RB/LB, Dumbuya and Harley being the only ones in the team. Throughout the squad you have players that can play here if need be though because of injury, such as Webster, Ertl, and Russell. There isn't any promising fullbacks in the reserves nor u18s, although Dan Butler could do a job at LB if needed, with Wheeler at RB (both having similar potential as well). Harley's contract is up in September, so I suggest signing a LB on short term until Christmas, Davies/Bidwell would be good. Eric Lichaj of Aston Villa can play both LB and RB, very good for League One and is willing to join. Signing him until the end of the season would be a priority.

- Target: Lichaj (Aston Villa, Loan), Tavernier (Newcastle, Loan), Davies (Swansea, Loan), Bidwell (Everton, Loan)

- Youth Prospect: Dan Butler, Elliot Wheeler

Centrebacks

CB - Adam Webster - #22 - Having joined Portsmouth at the age of 12, Webster signed academy scholarship with the club in the summer of 2011. Under the management of Michael Appleton, Webster was given more first team opportunities. Following an unused substitute appearance against Chelsea in the FA Cup, he made his début at the age of 17 the following weekend in a Football League Championship match against West Ham United.

picwebster.png

Adam Webster

CB - Gabor Gyepes - #16 - He made his debut in Portsmouth's 3–0 away win at Crawley Town. The Hungarian was substituted in the first half, for Adam Webster, having picked up an ankle injury. Gyepes scored his first goal for Portsmouth against Scunthorpe United at Fratton Park.

CB - Lubomir Michalik - #20 - Michalik signed for League One side Portsmouth on a one-month deal. Michalik scored on his Portsmouth debut in a 2-1 loss at Fratton Park against Swindon Town.

CB - Johannes Ertl - #18 - Ertl joined Portsmouth on a short-term contract and has been a regular in the squad over the season so far. Primarily used to be a CDM, but now plays his trade at CB.

CB - Josh Thompson - #5 - Thompson signed for League 1 side Portsmouth on a one-month deal. He "ripped up" his contract with Celtic so he could join Pompey. He made his league debut in a 3-0 away win at Crawley on the 9th of September 2012.

picgeyepes.png

Gabor Gyepes

Analysis - Portsmouth have 5 very good CB's that can all play League One standard. Webster has very good potential as well, which means he could be a star in the Championship as well. Not only do Pompey have the 5 in their first team, but also have young Alex Grant in the reserves who can play at a similar level to Webster but would need a bit more work. This position should be fine until Christmas, and when the opportunity arises, try and resign all their contracts until the end of the season. As with most of the first team, they are only contracted until October time except Webster and Ertl. If you would prefer to lower the wage bill, then you can bring in a couple loans instead, and let the contracts run out.

- Target: Thorpe (United, Loan), Laing (Sunderland, Loan), Williams/Devine (Aston Villa, Loan)

- Youth Prospect: Alex Grant

Wide Midfielders

LM - Jack Compton - #11 - On his move to Portsmouth, Compton says "I love this club" and admits he was "godsmacked" when receiving offers from the club. Six days later, the deal was officially confirmed, with Compton signing a one-month contract. He has been an important player in the first team this season.

piccompton.png

Jack Compton

Analysis - I suggest playing a narrow formation, so Compton isn't needed at the club. Allowing him to leave when his contract is up will free up £1k a week.

- Target: None

- Youth Prospect: None

Central Midfielders

CM - Darel Russell - #19 - On summer transfer deadline day 2012, Russell joined Portsmouth on an initial one-month deal. He plays as a central midfielder although during his career has been known for his versatility.

CM - Lee Williamson - #7 - Since signing for Portsmouth, Williamson has found himself one of the first names on the teamsheet each week. The Jamaican is also vice-captain of Pompey.

CM - Akos Buzsaky - #17 - Often struggles for fitness but on his day he is unplayable. Terrific set pieces and a shot to fizz most goalkeepers hands. He made his debut in the 2-2 away draw at MK Dons on the 6th of October 2012.

CM - Liam Walker - #6 - Walker was called by Portsmouth manager Michael Appleton to train with the club, after an impressive performance for Gibraltar. He was a part of the squad in the club pre-season matches.

picwalker.png

Liam Walker

Analysis - Williamson and Buzsaky are two of the gifted players in the squad, if you can keep both fit throughout the season you have a perfect partnership, one attacking playmaker and another hard working tackler. Walker can and will play anywhere in midfield and attacking midfield, although he isn't physically amazing his technical and mental abilities means he can be a threat. Russell is another hard worker who can drop deep and break up play, will also be very important. In the reserves, you have young Jed Wallace who can also play a part in Pompey's season. Ideally you want all of them until the end of the season, so trying to negotiate their contracts will be vital before they run out. Loan players are always an option if you can't get them on reasonable wages.

- Target: Tunnicliffe (Man Utd, Loan), Meyler (Sunderland, Loan), Yennaris (Arsenal, Loan), Smith (Norwich, Loan)

- Youth Prospect: Jed Wallace

Attacking Midfielders

CAM - Ashley Harris - #21 - Harris signed a two-year professional contract at Portsmouth in July 2012. He scored his first goal for the club on 25 August 2012, in a 4–2 defeat to Carlisle United. He then scored the opening goal of the game against Crawley, Portsmouth went on to win 3–0.

CAM - Brian Howard - #8 - He was named the club's captain for the 2012–13 season. He scored his first goal for Portsmouth in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy match at Fratton Park against Bournemouth on 4 September 2012.

picharris.png

Ashley Harris

Analysis - Howard will score goals, all season long. Fine striker of the ball and will play his part in assisting goals as well. Unless struggling for fitness, he is another who should be a first name on the team sheet. Harris is the finest youth product at Pompey along with Webster. Harris has a potential to be a star Championship player or even lower Premiership. Giving him game time is vital for his development. If you want to let Howard go when his contract is up in October, then Harris is easily good enough to play, with Walker as the back up for him or rotation option. Eisfeld of Arsenal would be a perfect loan option, he has great work rate and team work, will create goals for the strikers until he can't run anymore.

- Target: Eisfeld (Arsenal, Loan)

- Youth Prospect: Ashley Harris

Strikers

ST - Luke Rodgers - #10 - He scored his first goal at Fratton Park on 4 September, in a 2–2 draw with Bournemouth in the Football League Trophy, before converting the winning penalty in the resulting shoot-out. Five days later, Rodgers scored a 25 yard free kick in a 3–0 win over Crawley Town.

ST - Izale McLeod - #9 - McLeod agreed joined Portsmouth on a non-contract deal. He scored on his league debut in a 1–1 draw against Bournemouth. His second goal came in a 3–0 away win against Crawley Town on 9 September.

rodgersgs.png

Luke Rodgers

Analysis - We need more strikers. Four words summed up the whole analysis. Izzy isn't very good and if we can help it, should be starting, either that be a loanee striker or just playing one upfront with Rodgers. Rodgers is a goalscorer and will score plenty in League One, in real life he is on loan to Shrewsbury but thankfully short loans not included has helped us out on FM. Try to resign his contract when it comes to it, but if not Harris can play striker if needed, there is also young Dan Thompson in the reserves who can become a tidy player. I will use the word vital again, but it is vital to bring in a couple young strikers on loan.

- Target: Martin (Norwich, Loan), McManaman (Wigan, Loan), Piquionne (West Ham, Loan), Bamford (Chelsea, Loan)

- Youth Prospect: Dan Thompson

Formation and Tactics

My 3 Formations Suitable For Portsmouth

--------------------------

442 Diamond Narrow

This simple narrow formation is what I would use most games. Keep the possession and work the ball into space. Believe it or not, Pompey can play some great football with the players we have, so playing the passing can is what I like to do with the 442.

442diamond.png

This formation works better if you can find another striker besides McLeod. Granted you can still use Harris upfront alongside Rodgers as it still works and play pretty well beside each other. Howard's longshots are lethal, so allowing him to take long shots is a must. Try and limit everyone else though to rarely to allow the passing movement to flow into the box. Buszaky and Williamson would be your CM partnership.

451 Narrow

If you feel you still aren't retaining possession enough, switching to a formation like this packs out the midfield and allows Portsmouth to play around teams in League On. This formation utilises our strength and quality in midfield.

451h.png

All this formation does is sacrifice a striker for an extra CM. So keeping the same sort of lineup from the first tactic.

541 Wingbacks

This is the more adventurous defensive tactic which I have got a lot of success with.

This tactic would require you to get LB (who is comfortable as LWB on loan), Bidwell of Everton would be great for this role. You already have Dumbuya (also, Wheeler) for the right hand side. This is a snatch and grab type counter attacking formation. If you feel the game will be hard, or you are away from home and expecting a lot of defending, deploy this and teams find it so hard to break you down. The wingbacks will fly down the line on the counter and get the ball to the attackers.

541g.png

Personally this is my favourite of all 3 formations, but it wont be effective in all your games. We have a lot of great CB's so this uses a 3 at the back formation when attacking, but 6 at the back when defending. Depending on the work rate of your BBM, you could even be defending with 7 players, but burst out on the counter.

As always, this is only my suggestions and I am no god at FM13 (really, I am quite terrible), but these have worked well for me. Feel free to contribute and show what formations you have used, I may even swap yours for one of mine in here as I haven't really experimented much.

Extra Information

Money

Portsmouth start the game in administration, which means that you can't even approach players or staff. This should pass quite quickly and you are able to sign loan players and even free transfers (if you have released a couple players first).

Tycoon

I have had two saves now which have seen Pompey taken over by a tycoon, neither time I was managing them. Normally it is a normal local business man which takes control of the club, but if you're lucky enough to get a tycoon, you could have a fun save bringing Pompey back to the Prem. On one of the saves he invested £700k transfer budget in first season, unfortunately still nobody wanted to join but that is a budget almost 3x as much as anyone else in the division.

Player Contracts

In case you didn't read the squad analysis, all but 5 of Pompey's first team players contract run out in October sometime, one player in September and one player in December. You may want to acknowledge this first before you get to October time and realise you have no players to play your next league game. Take advantage of loans from Premiership squads they are happy to loan out youngsters to League One for free to gain experience and first team action. If you try loaning from Championship, you may have a bit of trouble looking for a 0% contribution/£0 fee a month loan.

Release Players

Personally, I'd release Izale McLeod and Harley as soon as the game starts to release some wage funds, so you are able to bring in a couple free transfers such as a GK and LB.

Conclusion

------

wesrtwood.png

Why choose Pompey on FM13?

x The challenge of taking a cash-strapped club back to the Premiership where they belong.

x The fun of having very little to work with, and if you succeed, it would be down to great management.

x A club that was close to winning a trophy 2 years ago, how soon can you win one? (No matter how small!)

x Unique challenge - after a couple months, all but 3 first team players contracts run out and you can't renew them all!

x A few youngsters you are able to develop on your voyage back to the glory land.

Let the fun begin!

Nice work Ty,

Forgot how long it takes to do a thread, 7 hours of my life gone :D

Great OP Ty. I've yet to use them in FM13, but in FM12 it was tough to succeed with them. This is definitely one for the challenges thread.

It should be fun this time around, I am waiting to start a network game with my friend before I take on the challenge fully. Good luck if you decide to use them :)

Cracking thread!

Buzsaky

Buzsaky  indeed. Too good for League One, the goals he score are sweet!

Where have Portsmouth fans heard this before?

Sidenote: I haven't been taken over this season yet. Will update my season when I reach the end. This news has popped up on the 7th of January, if this takeover happens I will be well happy :D

Takeover went ahead. The new chairmen has pumped in £28m to the club... Also he just gave me more funds for transfers...

I AM IN LEAGUE ONE WITH A BUDGET OF £14m :D

Great thread Ty!!

I started this game because I wanted the challenge of something different. No money, 3/4 players by November - its pretty unique. I guess you could say that about getting a big takeover like that in League 1, which in a strange way can represent a different sort of challenge in itself. But I'm actually hoping I get a season or two on a shoestring budget just for the challenge.

Ive played 4 games so far and have been massively surprised by the results! Im very average at this game though so I dont expect it to continue!

Porstmouth 8 - 0 Swindon

Notts County 1 -0 Portsmouth

Portsmouth 5 - 2 Bournemouth

Sunderland 2p - 2 Portsmouth

Gutted to lose out on pens to sunderland in the second round of the Cup, went 2 - 1 up in extra time but my players were running on empty, had someone on 34% by full time!

Brought in the usual suspects, Andersen and Lichaj who have been decent. The real revelations have been Mamady Sidibe and Jesse Lingaard, playing as a big man little man combo. Sidiby has 6 goals in 3 games with two hatricks!! Lingaard isnt far behind with an above 8 ave rating.

Loved my FM 12 Pompey save, will no doubt give it another go at some point.

£14 mil isn't a bad budget for League 1, could lead to some huge debts though!

Don't worry I can't really bring in any big faces due to wage max. being £5k a week.

Brought in some class loans though, such as Delph, Le Fondre, Jerome, Herd and Perch to help push for promotion.

That's class, never seen that before.

Either have I, glad I have though :D

8-0 is a crazy result!

Yeah I wasn't expecting another tycoon takeover, and haven't had one like this before. The previous two games when they got one and I wasn't managing them, it was local tycoon things. This one is a proper one, love it.

Still remember the one I got when Pompey were still in the Prem. Might actually start a Pompey save this year

I know, great way to start! I might have underestimated by team because Ive actually set them up quite defensively. Ive got my players hitting the big man up top and Sidiby is delivering the goals. Having said that Im still expecting a few tonkings along the way and Ill probably take back everything I said in a few weeks and start praying for a takeover!

Great thread, I'll have to start a Pompey game (again...3rd time lucky eh), even though I've failed miserably both times so far - 1st game, stayed up 1st season finishing 16th, 2nd season with no transfer budget and the wages budget reduced to 22k the board wanted promotion so I was out just after Christmas:( 2nd game, I finished 18th, and in season 2 the board wanted top half, but I went on a slump and lost 7 in a row and started getting messages about my job, then Championship Hull offered me a job so I upped and jumped before I was pushed. It's been a real struggle trying to find a consistent tactic, so next time I'll follow the tips in post#1 and see what happens.

Trial and error my friend :)

Took me a couple saves before I realised how to play with Portsmouth. I have now completely changed my tactics for the new season, with all my new players. I want back to back promotions, and so does my chairman.

Was very successful with Pompey on FM12, my Norwegian tycoon got to the Euro League and top six finishes in the Premier League. FM13 is very very hard but worth every moment to get them back in the EPL. Great thread and advice. Started off by beating Swindon in the League Cup then lost 0-1 at Sheffield Utd.

Portsmouth Update 2012/13

----------------

League

Well, remarkably we won the league. Extra thanks to the takeover in January which boosted our reputation which allowed such players as Cameron Jerome, Fabian Delph and a few other players join us on loan. Without these, we would of been struggling second half of the season. Going into January we was 4th or 5th, as you will see from the transfers, we lost a lot of players in October time as well.

In the end we won the league on very little points and I can't believe we did. With a record of 25-11-10 which is no way a league winning record!

Transfers

In

First half of the season, we was working on a strict budget. Releasing Harley, McLeod and Michalik at the start freed up some wage which allowed us to bring in Mpenza to spear front the attack this season. Addo to reassure the backline along with Sidibe in net, as Eastwood should be nowhere near the first team.

transferesin1.png

Transfers then consisted of loans to fill up the spaces in the squad. Tunnicliffe, Eisfeld, Smith and Lichaj was the 4 season long loans, with everyone else on 3 month contracts. Tunnicliffe and Smith proved to be 2 of the most important players in the team all season, with Smith proving a great player in League One with 9 goals from CM.

The second half of the season is where the fun began, with the takeover securing our finances it meant that we had a lot to spend and a small squad to work with. After everyone's contract run out in the winter, it meant we had a lot of gaps to fill. Even though we had £14m to spend, not many people wanted to join us or wanted a lot in wages which meant we couldn't afford to bring them in.

transfersin2.png

With the added reputation from the takeover, it meant higher quality Prem players wanted to join and their clubs were more than happy to let them come to us to get first team football. Perch who can't find himself in the Newcastle squad, became a key player in DM for us. Chris Herd provided great cover for a lot of places while Jerome ended up as an impact sub and proved his worth. Delph was without the best loan we made, averaging around 7.3 and really helping the team out as a BBM. The last main loan signing was Le Fondre, who we also tried to make permanent but again, wanted to much wages. Jed Steer thoroughly impressed during his loan spell, that I even extended it to really evaluate him and he was amazing. Averaging high 7.8 to 8.0 over the second half of the season, it saw us bid for him during the summer.

The actual signings with the £14m, we didn't really cut into it. Solely looking for quality players, rather than blowing it all.

Solvi Ottesen - £180k - Dominating CB who has now become the vice-captain going into 2013/14 season. Way too good for League One and proved it, averaging 7.51 in the second half of the season. £180k possibly signing of the season.

Celso Borges - £1.3m - A real catch for a League One side. Maybe be lacking a bit of bravery but everything else looks brilliant even for lower Premiership. Not high wages meant he was affordable as well. Chipped in with a lot of assists and a few important goals.

Mads Albaek - £1.6m - A player who was being chased by Serie A giants Napoli. I saw he was interested and transfer listed through being unhappy, I snapped in with an offer. A creative, hard-working CM who again, is easily good enough for lower Premiership sides. A real coup for Portsmouth.

Out

The only transfers out, were the players at the end of their contracts.

Most, if not all, of the players wanted a wage that they was not worthy of. This lead to most of the contracted players at the club leaving. The board was upset at first, but when the new board came in they couldn't care. They wanted high profile signings and that was it. Here is a list of the players I let leave;

transfersouty.png

FA Cup - Capital One Cup - Johnstone Trophy

In the Capital One cup, we beat Southend 1-1 on penalties before being smashed for 4-1 at Wigan in the next round.

In the FA Cup, we made the 4th round. We had a pretty easy path to the 4th round but was faced by Fulham where we met our demise.

Portsmouth 2 - 1 Gateshead

Portsmouth 2 - 0 Preston

Rotherham 1 - 3 Portsmouth

Fulham 3 - 1 Portsmouth

Great little run and pleased to get that far.

Johnstone Trophy I wanted to go out, so sent out a weakened squad which only lost 1-1 on penalties. I wanted to concentrate on the league rather than that silly competition.

Team Performance

Top Scorers

- Emile Mpenza; 13 goals

- Korey Smith; 9 goals

- Chris Martin; 7 goals

- Celso Borges; 6 goals

- Akos Buszaky; 6 goals

Top Performers

- Solvi Ottesen; 7.53

- Jed Steer; 7.24

- Celso Borges; 7.11

- Adam Webster; 7.06

- Eric Addo; 7.03

Next Season?

initialbudgets.png

So with a juicy budget, what is going to happen next season in the Championship? The owners want high profile players to join the club, I personally want to change the whole team and formation (this is made simple when all but 6 players are leaving the club). There is going to be a lot happening!

Started a Pompey game, got taken over but by another member of the board which sucked, barely got a squad, bottom of the league after 21 games with only 12 points to show, think I will get sacked before I get them relegated, just to got to keep going and hope a change of fortunes.

You're going to hate reading my update then :( Keep at it man, a change of luck will happen soon!

I was thinking about a Ranger's Save when i would get the game, but after reading this, I changed my mind. Great thread.

Good to hear! Thanks :)

Around 80,000 players I think, 16 leagues I think.

I'm not sure whether it's true or has anything to it. But I only load up about 50,000 plus all the leagues from England, France, Scotland, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain and occassionally Belgium. I'm just wondering whether the more you load, the better chance of getting a better takeover.

Link to post

Nope, as I loaded a 40k database, England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain for a network game with a friend.

They got a local tycoon businessman type takeover. Gave them around £700k to spend first season.

Very good thread this one.

So just loading England and Scotland in the first season ain't gonna get me very much when it comes to new owners then?

The amount of leagues/players you load up has no affect on the possible takeover.

Good luck!

Getting to the point now in November where I have to make difficult decisions on letting players leave. Sounds like Ill be going against the grain here but Ill probably let Howard and Williamson go to free up the wages!

Out of curiosity, how are Portsmouth coping IRL? Its around this time now when they should have about 5 players left. Im guessing they have brought more people in or extended them.

Interesting update, off the back of a 7 game unbeaten run Im about to travel to top of the league Coventry. This is just two days after letting high earners like Williamson, Howard, Gyepes etc go.

My wage bill is 10k a week. Not only is that lower than anybody else in League 1, it is also lower than anybody else in League 2. By far.

My Chairman must be so proud.

:D

My chairman was dissapointed that I was only spending £18k a week when he took over.

When I got promoted he hiked the budget from £35k a week to £360k a week :D

I take back what I said, im slightly jealous. Im getting murmurs of a takeover but by a fans consortium.

Its a bit disappointing, I either want to slum it on 10k a week or get a massive tycoon takeover like you got and get 15m to spend, either'll do.

I'll probably update later tonight if I complete the second season in time. Signed like 20 new players going into the Championship, and it couldn't be going better :D
