Season Results Summary:

Results for first half of the season

Results for second half of the season

We had a really worrying start to the season, failing to record a win in the first three games and losing two in a row at home to Lumezzane and away to Cuneo. In these opening games, we had leaked goals and looked really vulnerable. I had huge concerns despite it being so early in the season.

However, after this tough opening period, we suddenly started to find our rhythm and we became difficult to beat again. In fact, we only lost one more game in 2017 and generally managed to beat teams below us and record draws to sides against which we were huge underdogs.

Going into the winter break, as you have seen, we found ourselves in a comfortable mid-table position. Too many draws meant that we hadn't really improved much compared to the same point in the last couple of seasons, but there was a small amount of progress and I actually felt quite optimistic going into the second half of our campaign.

I should also mention that we had a really solid run in the Serie C cup and really ought to have gone further. We were eventually knocked out in the third round group stages but we were level on points at the top of our group and just missed out on goal difference. Pretty harsh. Had we gone through to the next round - the semi finals - who knows what might have happened for us in this competition!

At the beginning of 2018, we kept up our decent form initially but then had a defensive injury crisis. With so many centre-backs out injured, I had to field a midfielder in defence for a couple of games, and unsurprising it led to a couple of high scoring draws versus Venezia and Feralpi Salo. Confidence got hit hard by these poor defensive performances and it took us a while to get our form and morale back. When we did, though, towards the middle of March, we then went on an inexorable march towards the play-offs!

From the end of March, we went on a six match unbeaten run recording five wins and a draw. This took us into the play-offs, which felt like an amazing achievement for my young side!

In the play-off semi-finals, we played Cuneo and we managed to beat them very comfortably over two legs.

In the play-off finals, we were put up against Modena and given little chance of actually recording a result. Naturally this was the case as they had finished 12 points ahead of us in the league! I felt like anything could happen given the confidence of my team and the form that we had been in during the period leading up to this match. A 1-1 draw at our place in the first leg didn't really help us. We went to Modena and had to win but ended up coming away from a 2-4 defeat. The scoreline was a little worse than it should have been as we took risks trying to chase the game. But I was still proud of my team. Against the odds, we'd got to the play-off finals and finished 4th in the league. Hopefully this is a platform to build upon now so that we can be up here again next season!

In truth, had we been promoted, I think we would have been coming straight back down next season. The squad needs a lot of work, so I'm not at all disappointed to be spending more time in Serie C1/A. In all honesty, we need more time at this level to continue to build. Serie B would be too big a step up at this point.

Serie C Cup:

A great run saw us get through to the 3rd round. We were just a whisker away from qualifying for the semi-finals.

We were eventually knocked out in the third round group stages but we were level on points at the top of our group and just missed out on goal difference. Pretty harsh. Had we gone through to the next round - the semi finals - who knows what might have happened for us in this competition!

With the budget tight, and players not really interested in turning out for Mezzocorona, I just focused on adding depth to the squad.

We missed out on several transfer targets that would have significantly added quality to the first team. So this was really just a case of adding quantity rather than quality to the squad overall.

Vito Parise was a brilliant loan signing for us though. He came in from Atalanta and become my main number 9 for the season. Easily the best signing. Really nobody else stood out signficantly. A very mediocre year of signings.

It was disappointing to lose a fans favourite in Simone Loiodice. To be honest though, he wasn't really a great loss as his level is really somewhere between the top of C2 and the bottom of C1 level.

Otherwise, this was really just letting fringe players go. Unfortunately, I wasn't really able to replace them with much more in the way of quality in truth!

Key players:

Vito Parise - A loan signing from Atalanta. Averaged about a goal every other game. Not bad at all for a striker playing in a very defensively minded team.

Manuel Gavilan - Another good season from our captain. A very important player for us. Voted as player of the season by the fans.

Matteo Solini - Possibly our best player now. Rated by my coaches as Serie B standard. Very happy with how he has developed.

Giuseppe Giampietro - Solini's defensive partner. They made a great team in defence, helping us to have one of the best defensive records in the league.

Antonio Gravina - The most amount of assists in the team came from our wide man, Gravina. A very solid season from him.

Tactical talk:

Same as previous years. Nothing has changed here.

We played a no nonsense 4-4-2, rigid style, low creativity, basically making us well organised and hard to beat. Most matches, we approached with a cautious counter-attacking approach and for some matches we just aimed to defend deep and frustrate our opponents. We were pretty efficient, often not getting a lot of possession but defending well and taking our chances going forward. We ultimately did what was needed to put points on the board.

Bonus screenshots:

Our Best XI.

Where are my overall Best XI now? Most are still with the club. One surprise is that Simone Loiodice, a club favourite, actually quit football after leaving us to enter management at the age of 29!

Crouchy signs for another year with Mezzocorona. I wanted more but the board would only give me a contract for one more year.

The board review my season in charge. They seemed extremely pleased with how things had gone.

Here is the confidence page. As you can see, I have 'untouchable' status at the moment, which is great!

With our move to the new stadium this year, we broke all kinds of attendance records, as you can imagine. This was a our top attendance record for the season. It was the play-off final first leg against Modena. Our 9,879 capacity stadium was packed with 9,389 fans for this game!

Once again, my Mezzocorona team are named as Serie C1/A overachievers!

Next Season:

Finally, the bug that I experienced for the last three seasons has been fixed so I no longer have to replace all of my staff! Woo!

I'm aiming to keep the players together for the most part. I'd like to get Vito Parise back on loan from Atalanta if possible. Otherwise, I will be looking to make a few signings just to add quality if I can.

I'm really hoping for more of the same next season. Another league finish towards the top of the table - in or around the play-offs - would be great.

The idea is really to build a side that can win promotion and hold their own in Serie B now. But I think this will take time and so I won't be rushing a promotion push.

Great run at the end of the season to make it all the way to the playoff final, that was quite an impressive turnaround. I hate losing in the playoffs I know that's annoying, but at least it was to Modena, I've grown a soft spot for them after having loads of fun managing them a few FMs back.

Some more very gentle progress as we find ourselves two points better off than this time last season. We're predicted to finish 16th (again!) so we're once again exceeding expectations.

As usual, the actual first team hasn't changed too much. I just can't find much in the way of quality to add to my team. I think our very low reputation prevents us from really bringing in any new talent as we constantly get beaten to potential free transfers by other clubs playing at this level. Anyway, all will be revealed regarding signings etc. in the end of season update.

We've had a pretty strange season so far. Win or lose, there is no in between. We just can't seem to turn losses into draws. Very strange to have zero draws on the board as we come into the winter break.

The away form has been the main issue. We are generally winning games at home but struggling to do the business away. I'd really like to see us grinding out a few draws on the road to keep us putting points on the board.

Part of the reason for some of the poor form is that we lost our captain and star player, Manuel Gavilan, to injury for a couple of months. We suffered without him, that's for sure, and it has also taken a while for him to find his feet again. Now that he is back in the team, I feel as though we will be in great shape for the second half of the season.

In all honesty, I'm feeling quite positive. The team is good enough to be top 5 and I think we have a great chance of getting into the play-offs come the end of the season. We typically do better in the second half of the season so I'm approaching January with optimism. The main aim is to beat last season's points tally and I feel we can definitely do that at the very least. If we achieve that, I suspect we'll also be in a play-off position. Fingers crossed!

This is a cross post from FM Career Discussions where Daz was talking about the Italian tax bug in FM13. I thought I would repost here as it may be bringing this save to an end.

Argh. I didn't even know about the tax issues bug in Italy. Is my Mezzocorona save (now in the year 2019) screwed then?

I'm not at all interested in financial stuff, apart from maxing out my wage budget of course! I'm a football manager, not an accountant. So I've hardly studied the finances screen in game tbh.

I haven't really paid much attention to Serie A as I'm still playing at Serie C level but I did notice that A.C. Milan were relegated to Serie B in 2018. And now I look at the finances, I see only Juventus in the top 20 richest clubs in the world. Next is Inter down in 30th. Similar findings to AK22.

When I look at Serie A, almost three quarters of the teams on the job security screen have 'insecure' finances. A handful of teams have 'okay' finances. All of them have loan debts, many of the top clubs £100m+ and some even have up to £700m+!

My club, Mezzocorona, have been in and out of debt since I started the save, but I always assumed it was because we were a small club with a tiny stadium. Could the taxes be hampering my club's progress too or would I not really notice at that level?

Obviously my desire with this save was to take Mezzocorona to the top of Serie A and to try to compete for the Champions League too in the long run. It sounds as if this bug is basically going to ruin my chances of achieving that. :(

I guess it's good that I am at least finding out now after five seasons rather than having put three or four times as much into the save only to realise that Italy is screwed up.

And they really can't fix it to make it save game compatible? Feel really sad about this and wondering what I should do about my save. :(

Feeling a bit angry with FM at the moment. I have to agree with Daz. FM13 has been such a buggy experience for me too. I've reported countless bugs since it came out, including basic stuff like the functionality of three whole screens. How you can release a game where a basic screen like, say, assistant manager feedback just doesn't work at all? I've no idea. But I've soldiered on because I thought the game had potential to be one of the best FMs ever. However, this bug is likely really to test my patience with the game as it's essentially going to break my save, which I've put 120+ hours in to playing so far.

I haven't really had a solid FM experience since FM10, to be honest. I'm told FM11 was spot on but I skipped it. I played a lot of FM12 and thought that was decent but it was also pretty buggy for me (including one major manager reputation bug that never got fixed in any of the patches). And now FM13, which I've got to say has been the least polished version I can remember playing since the debacle of FM09! Argh!

Why the hell did SI add tax anyway? Did anyone actually want it? Another 'feature' which is not only unwanted but buggy and this time has also fundamentally unbalanced the game!

Going back to talking about my save, I'm not sure what to do really. I'm going to finish my current season and then have a think about it. I guess, ultimately, I'll have to give it up otherwise I'll face getting into the same situation as Daz where it just isn't playable.

Then I either give up on FM for a while and have some time away from it. Perhaps even go back to playing an old version for a while. Or I fire up another save, either starting with Mezzocorona again or maybe heading to Spain to do the Big Euro challenge there instead.

I mean, SI say Italy is fixed if you start a new save but is it really? I don't want to have to holiday through 20 seasons to test it tbh. Is Spain safe or is it messed up too?

Argh.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on what I should do from this point onwards given the information I've found out about the Italian tax bug. It seems that I would have to start a new save to resolve the issue and even then I would probably need to test to see if it has been completely resolved.

I am going to finish off my current season with Mezzocorona as I'm really enjoying it and I only have a handful of games left anyway. After that, it seems most likely that I would have to bring it to an ending. I'm not sure it's worth playing on with the knowledge that the finances are likely to be completely borked as I progress into the future.

I'm unsure whether just to start again with Mezzocorona on FM13 with the new patch which apparently resolves the bug for new saved games. If I did that, I could at least continue this thread, but it would mean starting from the beginning again, which I'm not sure how I feel about at the moment. Or, alternatively, I was thinking that I could try the Big Euro challenge in Spain instead. Finally, one last thought was just to return to an earlier version of FM although I'm not sure how interested people are in reading careers on old versions.

It's such a pity as I was enjoying the save with Mezzocorona and looking forward to the future with them. :(

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I know it's ultimately up to me what I do but it's always nice to have the thoughts and suggestions of other FMers to help you with this kind of decision.

I've just seen this post by Stu Coleman - http://community.sigames.com/showthread.php/318785-Italy-(Official)-League-Specific-Issues?p=8324163#post8324163 - which presents me with another option.

He says that the issue isn't save game compatible because it is a database error. He advises that you should adjust the 'Pension Employer' Tax rate found in the editor (Nations > Italy > Tax) from 38% to 23% to fix it.

So I assume that my save might well be salvageable if I can use a save game editor. I have just downloaded FMRTE to take a look at my save and the setting Stu Coleman talks about is indeed at 38%. I assume that if I change the value with FMRTE, I can rescue my save. Sure, there will be some damage done from the seasons in which the values were wrong but hopefully they would sort themselves out in the long-run.

The main issue for me is that using FMRTE would invalidate my entry into the Big Euro challenge. It also doesn't really feel right to me as I don't like using editors. You also have to pay to use FMRTE apparently and it wouldn't necessarily mean a 100% solution in terms of the fact that the damage has already been done.

Something to think about. I'm considering it if it would rescue my save.

If it was me I think I would start again and "hope" that the latest patch has resolved the issue. To cover myself though I think I'd look at starting in either Spain or Germany just in case (there doesn't seem to be much of an issue in these countries it seems). It's a pain in the arse, and I understand how you'll be feeling (I had a similar issue with FM10 where I'd played about 10 seasons, going from Cesano to Barcelona, and the game kept crash dumping each time I went to view the job offer from Barca), but I think short term pain will be worth it for the long term gain (ie - a more "realistic" game career).

No one will think any less of you (obviously!), if you decide to use the editor.

Personally, I deleted my save and am starting over. No matter how hard I would of tried, I would of hated my game from then on and with the knowledge of the tax issues, it would always be at the back of my mind.

From the position some of the big Italian sides currently find themselves in, it will only deteriorate. Milan in Serie B already? They will continue to drop.

I reckon Asia might be a good save like India or South Korea try and build up a club in Asia to compete with Barcalona,Madrid,Man United in the Club World Cup.

Thanks for the comment. I do like the idea of India but I really want to have a go at the Big Euro challenge this time around, so maybe another time.

Thanks for the comment. Makes good sense. Maybe I will look into starting in Spain, although Portugal is another country I've been interested in. I'm really not sure yet.

I'm almost tempted to have a break from FM13 and see what shape the next patch update leaves the game in. I imagine it'll be out in early Feb, so maybe I'll wait for that. I'm not sure.

It's a real shame about this save as I was thoroughly enjoying it. We currently sit 4th in league with three games to play. We are six points off the title so still had an outside chance of a late title challenge! Unlikely but we would have at least made the play-offs. Oh well.

No one will think any less of you (obviously!), if you decide to use the editor.

I think you are spot on Daz. I think it would always bother me that the game was essentially fudged. Even if I did change the tax rate, the damage has already been done. Italy is pretty messed up financially in my save now. I just didn't realise as I haven't been paying close attention to the top flight. For example, A.C. Milan are a Serie B side worth about £22m! Inter Milan have about £700m worth of debt! Most sides have at least £100m+ worth of debt! It's crazy.

I hate the idea of using an editor on my save anyway. I'm just disappointed that I can't continue with this as I was having a lot of fun.

The save I really want to be playing is this one but I don't know if I have the patience and energy to restart and go back to the beginning with Mezzocorona at this moment in time. Maybe when the next patch comes out, I'll be in the mood to return. Or maybe I'll get the urge to start a new save sooner in a different country entirely.

I too am currently with Mezzocorona. I wasn't aware of this tax issue, but I'll probably be moving on as I'm on a bit of a journeyman career. Been with York, Crystal Palace, Algeria and now Mezzocorona. Fun team to be in charge off, but I'm destroying them financially. Admittedly I'm running €1,000 a week over the wage, but I'm -€550,000 for the season and still only in Feb.

My expectations are to finish 17th and should end up in the playoffs. I'm hoping that should give a little boost to head elsewhere else I'll have an awful squad next season.

So I have been over to the Big Euro thread and withdrawn my Mezzocorona team from the challenge due to the Italian taxes bug. :(

Just a recap for anyone who doesn't know, apparently the taxes issue in Italy has been fixed in the recent patch but it isn't save game compatible because it is a database error. The 'Pension Employer' Tax rate for Italy is set at 38% but should be set to 23%. So there is nothing I can do to fix my save. As you can imagine, I'm feeling really sad about this. I put about 130 hours into the save so far. I have never had a game breaking bug like this so I'm feeling pretty angry with FM13 at the moment!

It's a real shame about this save as I was thoroughly enjoying it. We currently sit 4th in league with three games to play. We are six points off the title so still had an outside chance of a late title challenge! Unlikely but we would have at least made the play-offs. Oh well. :(

I'm not sure what save I will play next. I really wanted to have my first attempt at the Big Euro challenge on FM13. The save I really want to be playing is my Mezzocorona one but I don't know if I have the patience and energy to restart and go back to the beginning with Mezzocorona at this moment in time. I'm unsure what I'll do. I feel like maybe a break would do me good and that maybe when the next patch comes out, I'll be in the mood to return to a fresh save with Mezzorcorona (and maybe I'll just keep it going in this thread). Or maybe I'll get the urge to start a new save sooner in a different country entirely. To be honest, the latter is quite likely as even though I'm told this bug has been fixed, I'm still worried that this taxes thing might be unbalanced.

Can anyone report on their experiences with taxes and finances in other countries? Which countries appear stable and balanced with the new taxes 'feature'? I'm thinking maybe Portugal or Spain but I haven't decided yet. Italy is my favourite so something similar in culture and style could be my cup of tea. Any recommendations on a good league system to try? Thanks guys. :)

Also thanks to those who have been following my Mezzocorona save and commenting etc. It's always great to share experiences with fellow FM addicts. :)

I guess with three games left, I probably should, just to see how the season will end.

I probably won't post anything near a full season review though. Maybe just a league table and a couple of lines about the season. I can't bring myself to write a full update knowing that I'll be abandoning the save. :(

And I will miss my captain and best striker, Manuel Gavilan, but also my best centre-back Matteo Solini who has been improving every season. I won't miss my chronic lack of quality in central midfield though.

Any recommendations on where I should head next SnakeXe? I imagine that I should probably stay clear of Italy.

Shame Crouchy as I was really enjoying reading this save after the success of your journeyman career on FM12. Just had a look on my save aswell which Im currently in Germany and really enjoying the game but my plan was to go to Italy at some point. But after reading this the exact same problems occur which rules that out and leaves me with a decision to make aswell, but atleast Im not in one of the challenge's which would be a killer to lose all the progress.

Personally I think the leagues in Italy are by far and away the most enjoyable as they are bloody hard and to try and compare them to another country is quite difficult. Spain is probably the closest but the lower leagues are quite tedius with the amount of 'B teams' involved.

I found Germany brilliant when I was there briefly on FM12, don't know if that'll stir the cockles for you as much as Italy but I certainly enjoyed it! South America is definitely an experience as well.

I second this. I played as Rasenballsport Leipzig (Red Bull) on the Big Euro Challenge on FM11 & (briefly) FM12 and loved it. There seems to be a lot of prize money in Germany too. And toppling Bayern is VERY hard...

It's a shame to hear this save's going to end, especially when it's completely out of your control... But maybe this will give you a new opportunity? And we'll all be listening whatever you decide! :)

I really do enjoy playing in Germany as well.Had a spell with Red Bull Leipzig in FM12 and currently at Bayern Munich in FM13.Was always my intention to find a database which went below 3.Liga and do a youth only challenge with a German team.

Crouchy's 'Mezzocorona, vinci per noi!' Big Euro Challenge Attempt! (Season Five at Comunale 2018/19)

This won't be my usual detailed update given that the save is going to come to an end now due to the Italian taxes bug. I have finished off my fifth season at Mezzocorona and here, briefly, is how it went.

We finished three points better off than we were last season and six points off the title.

A strong season for us but we lost too many games. We needed to turn some of the losses into draws and if we had done that we might well have made a proper title challenge.

We played AlbinoLeffe in the play-off semi-finals. We won 1-0 at home but then went to their place for the second leg and lost 2-0. AlbinoLeffe went on to win the play-offs.

Serie C Cup:

We were knocked out in the 3rd round group stages by a typically narrow margin.

Key players:

I'll just give you a couple of screenshots of my two favourite players in this Mezzocorona team.

Manuel Gavilan - Captain and best striker. Is now an icon on the club information screen.

Matteo Solini - Possibly our best player now. Rated by my coaches as good enough for Serie B. Very happy with how he has developed. Voted player of the season by the fans.

Bonus screenshots:

I won manager of the year for the first time in my career

My board are very happy with the job I've been doing

Mezzocorona are overachievers

Might as well finish the season, I hope we see you with another thread soon though.

Thanks for the comment AB. I'm sure I'll be back with another thread at some point. I love FM even though I'm a bit cross with it right now! Plus FMCU is an awesome place to share your FMing experiences so I still want to be here and have a thread to post updates in! :)

Hi Nava. Yeah, I suggest not going to Italy unless you start again on the latest patch. You definitely don't want to ruin your save.

I have to agree with what you say about the leagues in Italy. I've got addicted to playing in Italy in recent versions.

I'm not sure about Spain both for the reason that you mention and also because I've never been a fan of Spanish football particularly. The more I think about it, the less likely it seems to me that I would go there.

In a previous save of mine I started off in Portugal and found it very frustrating - you can finish top of the division and still not be guaranteed promotion.

Hmm, that sounds quite interesting though! I do like a challenge in FM even if it seems unfair!

I found Germany brilliant when I was there briefly on FM12, don't know if that'll stir the cockles for you as much as Italy but I certainly enjoyed it! South America is definitely an experience as well.

Hmmm, Germany is one I hadn't thought of. Not sure what I think about Germany. I will have to have a think about it! Trouble with me, as you know, is it takes me an age to find the right place (country and/or club).

I've been thinking about France but I don't think the league system is all that interesting. Portugal but I don't know enough about it. And finally Sweden but obviously that wouldn't qualify for the Big Euro but it could provide its own very interesting challenge.

I'm not sure about South America. For some reason, it just doesn't appeal as much as Europe.

The other thing is that I've been thinking of maybe running a 10 year holiday save in Italy with the new patch to see if the problems are really fixed. Then I could always just start afresh with Mezzocorona as I'm missing that place already. :(

Maybe some XCOM first though. ;)

Thanks Chutney. Appreciate it. I'll definitely have a think about Germany.

I really do enjoy playing in Germany as well.Had a spell with Red Bull Leipzig in FM12 and currently at Bayern Munich in FM13.Was always my intention to find a database which went below 3.Liga and do a youth only challenge with a German team.

Another recommendation for Germany. Will have to take this seriously then! I think Germany would definitely suit my style of football more than Spain would. Yes, I'm now taking this very seriously indeed.

I haven't played in Germany since my career save in FM2008 where I managed FC Kaiserslauten and Leverkusen in two different spells in the country. Great stuff!

Having a save crap out because of bugs is annoying as hell, I've had a bit of a similar experience recently (although that was the game crashing not tax issues) and it's frustrating however I did manage to get a lot more seasons out my game, having it cut off so early must be even worse. To be fair you could have continued, but I'd make the same decision too, given what you're saying the upper levels are all messed up, that would feel completely unrealistic by the time you reach them.

Good luck for your next game.
