Background

Club Atlético Boca Juniors is an Argentine football club based in the La Boca neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Although many activities are hosted by the club, Boca Juniors is mostly known for its professional football team which currently plays in the Argentine Primera División.

Boca Juniors is the one of the most successful football teams in Argentina and the world having won 48 official titles. Boca's last official title obtained was the 2011/12 Copa Argentina. Internationally the team has won 18 titles, a record shared with A.C. Milan although Boca also won two international titles during the amateur era, the Tie Cup in 1919 and the Copa de Honor Cousenier in 1920, those tournaments created before CONMEBOL was established. Boca Juniors' international trophy haul includes 6 Copa Libertadores, 4 Recopa Sudamericana, 3 world club titles (Intercontinental Cup), 2 Copa Sudamericana, 1 Copa Oro, 1 Supercopa Sudamericana, 1 Supercopa Masters, 1 Tie Cup and 1 Copa de Honor Cousenier. Boca Juniors is also one of only eight teams to have won CONMEBOL's treble (the others being Olimpia, São Paulo, Independiente, Vélez Sársfield, Cruzeiro, Internacional and LDU Quito).

How it all Began

Five young men, Santiago Sana, Alfredo Scarpatti, Esteban Baglietto, and the brothers Juan and Teodoro Farenga played in a team with friends called Independencia Sud from the Italian immigrant neighbourhood of La Boca. The group decided to create something much more formal and met in Plaza Solis on Saturday 1st April 1905 to shape the project; the next day the team was formed in the house of Esteban Baglietto. The young men returned to the Plaza between the streets Olavarria, Suarez, Gaboto and Ministro Brin where they continued discussing the team name and suggestions like “Sons of Italy” and “Stars of La Boca” had already been ruled out. “Boca” was gaining favour when Santiago Pedro Sana had the honor of officially naming the new club by adding the word “Juniors” using the British touch typical of the era. On Monday 3rd April 1905, the group appointed the first Executive Committee in the house of the Farenga brothers. Thus began a history of popular passion, rarely seen, that endures eternally in the hearts of a legion of supporters who are now scattered all over the world.

Superclásico

This is the name given to the derby between Boca and River. The two clubs both have origins in La Boca, the working class dockland area of Buenos Aires, with River being founded in 1901 and Boca in 1905. However, River moved to the affluent district of Núñez in the north of the city in 1925. Since then Boca Juniors has been known as the club of Argentina's working class or the people's club with many Boca fans coming from the local Italian immigrant community. Boca fans are actually known as Xeneizes (Genoese). By contrast, River Plate became known by the nickname, Los Millonarios (The Millionaires) with a supposedly upper-class support base. Both clubs do though have supporters from all social classes. The first ever recorded Superclásico was a friendly played on 2 August 1908, when Boca prevailed 2-1. The first official match was played on 24 August 1913, with River winning 2-1.

Squad Analysis

Captain – Rolando Schiavi

Schiavi was signed on a free from Newell’s in the summer of 2011 and has since gone on to become a first choice central defender at Boca. He has got bags of experience and was appointed captain in 2012 after the departure of Juan Román Riquelme. He retires at the end of this year after 20 years in football.

Vice-captain – Leandro Somoza

Somoza arrived from Velez in January 2011 and was an integral part of the team last season which won the Apertura and got to the final of the Copa Libertadores where Boca lost to Corinthians.

Goalkeepers

1st XI - Agustin Orión

Backup - Oscar Ustari / Sebastián D'Angelo / Manuel Vicentini

Young Prospects – Iván Comino / Marcos Zappa Costa

Orión will definitely be your first choice keeper for years to come and Ustari is a solid backup and is only 25 years old so he is worth keeping around. Orión starts the season injured and will most likely miss your first four games of the new league season.

Right Full Backs

1st XI - Franco Sosa

Backup - Emiliano Albín

Young Prospects – Alan Aguirre / Matías Romero

This area of the team is pretty weak. You only have one recognized senior right back although Albín can fill in here if needed. He is a natural right midfielder in the game but can also perform at right back. I think it would be ideal to invest in this area of the team as Sosa is 31 years old and Albín is only at Boca on a loan until the end of the season so strengthening this area ASAP would be a good idea. You can purchase Albín for £625K as part of the loan agreement should you wish to do so.

Left Full Backs

1st XI - Clemente Rodríguez

Backup - Juan Sánchez Miño

Young Prospects – Nicolás Pinto

Rodriguez is one of the best full backs in the division so he will be first choice here and you have a highly rated youngster in Sánchez Miño as backup who really burst into the Boca team last season with some very good performances mostly on left midfield. There isn't really much depth here because if Rodríguez got injured, you don't really have anyone to backup Sánchez Miño so you could bring in another left back as a bench warmer.

Central Defenders

1st XI - Rolando Schiavi / Guillermo Burdisso

Backup - Matías Caruzzo / Christian Cellay

Young Prospects - Lisandro Magallán / Arián Puchetta / Thiago Casasola / Lautaro Viscardi

This is actually quite a strong area of the squad. As Schiavi retires at the end of 2012, the January transfer window may be a good opportunity to bring in another defender to replace him. Schiavi should be partnering the recently signed Burdisso in the heart of your defense. Caruzzo and Cellay are great backups along with another recently signed player, Magallán who is rated quite highly.

Defensive Midfielders

1st XI - Leandro Somoza

Backup - Sebastián Battaglia

Young Prospects - Guillermo Fernández / Cristian Alvarez / Cristian Erbes

Somoza will start off as your first choice defensive midfielder as Battaglia continues his long recovery from injury. Whilst he is injured you have three highly rated youngsters ready to play as backup.

Right Midfielders

1st XI - Diego Rivero

Backup - Pablo Ledesma / Guillermo Fernández

Rivero and Ledesma are fairly similar for the right midfield role although Rivero possesses the slightly better stats so personally I’d have him as first choice with Ledesma a great backup. Guillermo Fernández can also play here should you need him to.

Left Midfielders

1st XI - Walter Erviti

Backup - Nicolás Colazo / Juan Sánchez Miño

Young Prospects – Francesco Celeste / Juan Martini

Erviti is the best left winger in the squad and although he lacks very slightly in some physical qualities, he is still technically and mentally strong. If, however you wish to play a classic 4-4-2 then you can use Erviti in a central midfield role as a playmaker. Colazo is a very young and pacey winger and is a good backup along with Sánchez Miño who can also play here.

Attacking Midfielders

1st XI - Lautaro Acosta

Backup – Cristian Chávez

Young Prospects - Leandro Paredes / Iván Leszczuk / Leonardo Suarez / Yamil Navarro

Personally I’d start with Acosta in this position as I’ve never really been a massive fan of Chávez, however, both are certainly capable of playing the attacking midfield role. You have one of the best prospects in the country at your disposal as Paredes will no doubt be a great player in the future so make sure you give him games where possible.

Strikers

1st XI - Santiago Silva / Lucas Viatri

Backup - Nicolás Blandi / Orlando Gaona Lugo

Young Prospects – Franco Fragapane / Francisco Di Franco / Federico Martinez / Santiago Krieger / Gabriel Guerra / Sergio Araujo

You’re certainly not short of options upfront as you have four senior strikers and there are plenty of good young prospects as well. Araujo is the most highly rated out of the younger strikers but is currently on loan at Barcelona B. I’ve holidayed two saves and they didn’t buy him for the agreed price so in the summer of 2014 he may be back in your squad.

Conclusion

Eight of my recommended first XI are thirty or over and I’d say that each of them still has a role to play in the team for at least a couple more seasons, however if you get good offers for players around this age you should seriously consider selling and using the cash to buy a younger player. The rebuilding process is looming which makes this save very exciting. I would suggest sticking with the current team throughout the first season as it is still one of the best squads in the league. You start off with just £312,500 as a transfer budget but this can be increased by asking the board to increase the wages which gives you around £1.4 million to spend.

Also, if you're wondering why I've left Riquelme out of the analysis, it's because he shouldn't be at Boca in the game. He originally announced after the Libertadores Final loss to Corinthians in July that he would be leaving, then it was rumoured he could return after Falcioni's era. This is why the Boca researcher has set Riquelme as unavailable to play until the end of 2012 in the game. Later, he offered a press conference stating that he would never play for the club again but by the time this came out, the data had been locked and wasn't changed for the game. Of course if you want to play him when he becomes available at the end of 2012 he will be by far your best option for the AMC role as an advanced playmaker.

Formations

oie_241744lElmEdd4_zpsec8aa798.png

Any of the above forms of a 4-4-2 formation would work perfectly with the squad at your disposal. Personally, I'd only play using those three formations. My favourite one to use is definitely the 4-4-2 diamond as I have used this in the last three versions of FM when managing Boca. One of the main reasons for me to play the diamond 4-4-2 was because of Riquelme. He was one of the best advanced playmakers in the game and will definitely be missed in the Boca team. There are a couple of players who can play in different positions so it makes it easy to change the formation due to any injuries. Instead of playing with Somoza as a defensive midfielder, you can move him into central midfield as a ball winning midfielder if you prefer to play without a DM.

So Why Boca?

I’ve been managing teams from the South American continent for around four versions of FM now. I started because in general South American football poses very interesting challenges as there are different league systems there than in Europe for example the Torneo Initial and Final in Argentina where the league is split into 2 tournaments with 19 games in each. This year the league was changed so that instead of two champions (Initial and Final) both teams who win each section will play in a playoff game at the end of the season to determine the overall winner.

When you first start the save you’ll notice your transfer kitty is around £300,000 which is extremely low. However by asking the board to increase wages you can get the transfer cash up to around £1.4 million. Boca also produce highly rated youth players each year so it’s a great to train them up and sell them on for a good fee in future seasons. The squad has lots of thirty plus year old players so the rebuilding process is imminent and soon enough you can begin to introduce your younger players and create a new era.

The league is also very competitive and I would say that 5 or 6 teams could challenge you for the title so this will keep you motivated throughout the season!

This was my first thread in this part of the forum so if there is anything you’d like me to add please feel free to tell me. Hope you enjoyed reading it and good luck. I will update how my current save is going ASAP!

out of curiosity (I didn't pre ordered the game so no beta for me):

- did you download something or the player faces from argentina are included on the game?

- Isn't Sebastian D'Angelo (GK) in the team?

The player faces for Argentina are part of a megapack and are available to download on a few of the fan sites like FM view, FM scout and sortitoutsi.

Yes D'angelo is in the team. I've added him to the post above, not sure how i missed him but thanks!

EDIT- pm'd you a link to the megapack

Riquelme injured or?

I mentioned that he left a couple of times in the posts above :) He left after the Libertadores final in July stating he had nothing more to give but in the game he is available to play for Boca at the end of 2012. This was because he was originally going to return after Falcioni's era as they have never really seen eye to eye. However, Riquelme then announced he wouldn't be returning in a press conference but unfortunately this wasn't put into the game after the researcher sending several requests. He hasn't officially retired and of course could still change his mind and return, no-one knows!

Thanks for the link. First I'll wait to the demo to see if I can still run FM in the computer I use most of the time.

About D'Angelo, I reallly expected a little bit more stats, he seems like a waste in the game.

and about Riquelme, he is still under contract with Boca, on some sort of "holiday without pay". Hard to translate it into the game.

Yes D'Angelo is pretty useless. I think that's why I left him out in the first place but for the first 6 or 7 weeks he will be your backup to Ustari as Orión is injured at the start of the season. I hope FM does work on your computer so you can chat in here about your game! :D

The thread seems very quiet. Hopefully it picks up after Friday when the full game is released. I've been spending the beta access looking for bugs/data issues and haven't started a long term save yet but on Friday, Boca will be my first save and I'll post in here every few days to share how I'm getting on.

I just downloaded the Beta and haven't had time to properly start my Boca save. I usually do a Boca thread but it never garners much attention, glad to see someone else is having a go with them. I hope Roman does return Falconi may be on his last legs irl so we will have to see. I am struggling to find a formation with this side, I don't like diamond formations and can't get a 4-2-3--1 up and running may try a 4-2-2-2 box as I had great success with it a few years ago.

Hey lawd. I remember your name from a few years ago in one of the Boca threads so good to see you post in this one too. I was going to do a thread last year but coursework got the better of me and looking back, I don't think there was one for last years FM. Anyway, it is tough to find a good formation if you don't like the diamond. Personally I ain't a massive fan either but whilst managing Boca in the last three editions of FM, that is the formation I have used and it has worked. At other clubs i usually play a 4-2-3-1 but I didn't think this would work with the current Boca side so haven't tried it. What players have you used in your 4-2-3-1?

Link to post

To be honest I only had 2 games with a 4-2-3-1 but in last years FM i developed a 4-3-3 and a formatin that had a libero sweeper 2 wingbacks 3 cm's and 2 forwards sort f a 1-2-2-3-2 formation I suppose but this was after a few years into it. I usually try and do something a bit unique I find the current squad to be a bit too heavy in central midfield for the diamond, and watching most of the gaes this season irl I don't find it very appealing. I may go back to a 4-3-3 with Silva, Blandi and one other, not Viatri as I don't think two number 9's wrk in a team, it would have been Araujo had he not been sold to Barca. I think this years will prove the greatest challange as its a weaker side than usual.

Paredes and Sanchez Mino look great mind and both where key players for me in FM12 hopefully be able to get the best from them. their are a couple of real talents coming through which look to perhaps have been included in this years FM Fernandes the CM looks good, a bit Banega esque irl so I'll try and develop him. I'll contribute properly when I can have a bash at the game.

Link to post

The thing is that Blandi, Viatri and Silva are all fairly similar; good in the air and very strong. If I play two upfront I tend to play a target man and a poacher however, the only poachers are Gaona Lugo and Fragapane both of whom, personally I wouldn't start so Viatri/Blandi and Silva seem the only option. There's obviously the youngsters in the under 20s but I don't think they are ready for any first team action. I'll let you know how I get on with playing Viatri and Silva together when I start my save tomorrow.

Regarding Araujo, I holidayed through to the summer of 2014 to see if Barca would activate his buy clause and twice they didn't so you might get him back. Those two saves could have just been lucky but it would be great to get him back in a few years time to see how he has developed in the game.

Also, keep an eye on the former Huracan player, Thiago Casasola in the Boca under 20s. He will turn into an absolute beast in the future.

Does Riquelme retire after his holiday is over?

No, he returns to the squad in the game and you can play him in the Torneo Final. As mentioned in some posts above, irl he said he wouldn't play for Boca again so he shouldn't be in the Boca squad in the game but it was too late to change after the data lock.

Well I still ain't really had the time to have a proper go at my Boca save, but I'm trying to get get through a season on FM classic to develop a working tactic and get the feel for FM13. I managed to get a basic 4-2-3-1 up and running but its still early days with it. I find im shiping a few but Burdisso is playing well Schiavi is good but gets burned by a pacey forward. Paredes is cementing a place as the Treqaurista and Chavez is lethal coming inside from the left as an IF. I managed to score Bolatti on loan so my two DM positions have loads of options. I was going to bring in Dybala but decided to stick with what I have, wished I hadn't though as my strikers are very goal shy at the moment.

Sorry I haven't posted sooner but I only started my save at the end of last week because I was busy the week before. So anyway, I started my save and loaded the following leagues; Argentina, England, Scotland, Spain, Germany, Italy, Peru, Uruguay, Columbia, Brazil, Holland and Chile with no transfer budgets in the first window.

I've just finished the first half of the 2012/13 season and I took two screenshots of my results and the league table;

oie_92131416d7KAH3L1.png

oie_9213034YJ9GUeFB.png

The race for the Torneo Inicial was very close and unfortunately I finished 4th :( I still qualified for the Libertadores which is great but I drew too many games which probably cost me the league. As you can see, I conceded quite a lot of goals in the league and this is something I am going to address for the Final stage. On a happier note, I won the Copa Sudamericana and got through to the next stage of the Copa Argentina but only just on penalties!

In the last game of the first stage against Arsenal I was 1-0 down and needed to win with 15 minutes to go so whilst searching for two goals, I moved Schiavi to a TM striker and he came up with this superb finish which I wasn't expecting!

[video=youtube;BM6WgRetCT0]

Also, I've got a SS of the squad and their overall stats in all competitions so far;

I'm going to try and sign a couple of bosman transfers most notably Lisandro Lopez and Matias Laba. Stracqualursi is also a good option who I may pursue as his contract also ends in June 2013. All three of these players will improve the squad a lot with Laba a more youthful option and one for the future. I've got £5 million in the transfer kitty and I also need to do a staff overhaul, getting rid of some of the current ones and bringing in better options. Will update how I get on with these free transfers later.

I managed to sign Esteban Andrada, Lopez and Laba on bosmans so they will join me in July 2013. Really pleased with those signings especially Lopez who will go straight into defense to partner Burdisso for next season. Will probably get rid of Ustari at the end of this season and use Andrada as my back up keeper.

Edit - Forgot to say I bought Palermo's son Ryduan for just over £1 million from Estudiantes in the January transfer window. My staff rate him as 4 star potential so hopefully he turns out as good as his father as he gets older :D

Well I finally decided that as my strikers couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo I wouldn't bother playing one and have developed a quite exciting strikerless 4-3-3. Which has paid huge divedends and I am sitting pretty on top of the league and in the semi's of the Sudamericana. I need a CD as Schiavi is retiring I am thinking Velasquez but may try a loan for someone else depending on price. I secured the future signing of Romario the right back who I had in last years FM and did very well, scouths rate him very highly so hopefully he can do the business for a couple seasons and then bring in a big fee. Paredes has been exceptional for such a young player as has Acosta and Chavez on the flanks. I'll do some screenshots etc when the campaign is over.

Just finished my first attempt at a save with Boca so I’ll summarise how I got on in each competition in the 2012/13 season below;

Torneo Inicial 2012 – Finished 4th - Was quite disappointed with this as I only finished two points behind Newell’s who won it. I had a good start to the league but when playing in the latter stages of the Copa Sudamericana I seemed to lose or draw my next league game just like some clubs do in real life which cost me the Inicial crown.

Copa Sudamericana 2012 – Before starting in this competition I wasn’t expecting to win it but as each game went past I thought I might have a chance and later I managed to win it which I was very pleased about.

Copa Argentina 2012/13 – In the 5th round I played a reserve/youth side and was 2-0 down at half-time when in the second half I introduced Gaona Lugo who got two goals in the last ten minutes to set up penalties which I eventually won. The 6th round was a disaster where I played Banfield and this time lost on penalties. I was hoping to go further in this competition but it wasn’t to be this year. I think for future saves I might just play most of my first teamers!

Torneo Final – 2013 – Finished 4th – Again I found myself finishing 4th but this time behind Estudiantes, San Lorenzo and the winners Godoy Cruz! So again I was disappointed with this and felt I should have finished higher up in the league. There was a turning point in the league where I was drawing with Estudiantes 1-1 with ten minutes to go when Silva missed two penalties in the space of two minutes (81st and 82nd). After that game I lost my next two against Godoy Cruz and Colon and then drew two against River and Racing. I think if I had beat Estudiantes I may have done better in the games after that but that’s where my title challenge started going downhill. After those games I won 4 out of 6 and drew the other two but it was too little too late.

Copa Libertadores 2013 – I reached the quarter final where I lost to Ecuadorian side Liga De Quito. I was extremely surprised that I didn’t manage to progress to the semis especially after managing to get an away goal when I lost 1-2, we then drew 0-0 at home which was a massive missed opportunity where one goal would obviously have been enough to go through.

Recopa Sudamericana Final - I played Corinthians and beat them 5-4 over two legs; 3-3 at La Bombonera and 2-1 away. Very pleased to win another trophy especially against a good team like Corinthians.

Overall, it wasn’t a bad season as at least I was challenging for both league titles even though I fell short it was a fairly good effort. Winning the Sudamericana was obviously a highlight and I would have preferred to progress slightly further in the Libertadores. The Copa Argentina was pretty much a disaster as I should have got further but not a bad season overall. I found this years FM to be a lot more difficult than previous versions especially tactics wise in some of my games. One thing I noticed is that in my game I definitely missed Riquelme and I hope he returns IRL so I can introduce him back into the squad when I start another save!

I don't think I'll be able to play much for the next 3 or 4 weeks as I'll be busy at work but I'll keep an eye on the thread to see how others are doing. I might start a new save to see if I can do any better in my first season and maybe play a couple of games every few nights but nothing worth posting to update about for a good few weeks sadly.

Don't even know if anyone is still reading this, but out of curiosity has any one managed to get any players sent on oan by barca? i have had to cash in on a lot of first teamers as finances steadily decined and would ove to have had a few resrve team players come but I don't suppose the AI is sophisticated enough to send any.

Just started my first Boca Juniors save. I have already had some experience in Argentina with my favourite team Velez Sarsfield, but now I want to try the powerhouse Boca Juniors. I try to make them the Barcelona of South America. Boca Juniors should be ideal for that role, because they have a lot of history, a great reputation and one of the best youth facilities in South America.

Getting any Barca players is impossible in my opinion. Finances do seem to go downhill so I sold most of my first team players at the end of the first season that were on high wages, plus I took out Riquelme using the editor before starting the save so i saved huge amounts on his wages during the season. In summer 2013 I signed younger players on cheap wages, some of which i think i mentioned in an earlier post but to be honest it is time to rebuild as the squad is full of older players who will only decline. Of course they could do 1 more season but money ASAP is a priority.

Well I'll give a quick update on my save n my first season I won the opening and closing stages as well as the Libertadores. I developed a strikerless 4-1-2-3 formation with 2 inside forwards and my front three of Chavez-Paredes-Acosta got 60 goals between them in all competitions which I was delighted at. Burdisso has proved amazing for me so good as a bpd. I signed Velazquz from Indeendiente in January and he has proved immense also. Lost Rodriguez, Silva, Blandi, Rivero, Somoza and Cellay amongt others due to, as previously mentioned, the financial situation going downhill. I have decided to focus on bringing youth players through this season, this is a mainly enforced philosophy I am having to take as I have zero cash in order to splash out.

Bad news. sadly the lads who do Boca's data have edited Riquelme so he will be unavailable before for the entirity of his contract. IRL however Roman has resigned. So if anyone is starting a new save post transfer update then remeber to edit him as being available for the second half of first seaon and beyond.

anyone got a link to last year's thread? I can't find it.

I need some tips on what could be some good first transfers ( I really dont know american leagues).

It's usualy me who does the Boca threads and as they generally didn't spark much interest I didn't do one last year. But I may be able to help regardless, what position are you looking to strengthen?

I have started a new Boca save following the final transfer patch. My goal in this save is to build a first team 11 consisting entirely of academy products. Paredes and JSM are obviously the starting point, Cassasola will be brought in as will Palacios in the next season or so. I need to produce some decent fullbacks, Although th eentire back 4 of the U20 Argentina squad are my players and my U20 tea are miles ahead in their league, so maybe the full backs are gonna come good. My only concern is the money I am losing Erviti and Somoza are away at the end of the season so their wages will come off and I am gonna sell Orion and Silva I think to limit my spend on wages, which seems to be my main expenditure.

I won the opening stage and Sudamericana and I'm through to the knockouts of the Libertadores, my first youth intake has provided me with a 5* CB who looks like an absolute gem.
