FM13 Arsenal Thread - Victoria Concordia Crescit

I'd look to add another centre back, and depending how you feel about jenkinson maybe replace him early on. Left back can probably wait until the first load of regens come through. I've found the game favours those with high dribbling stats, and that Gervinho is actually quite a goal machine if you throw him forwards as a striker. I sold him for £22m to man city (who benched him permanently) and at that price he wasn't worth keeping. I think I've read that the value you can get for him has reduced in which case I'd think harder about keeping him.
I was struggling to get rid of Gervinho for 7.5m on the latest patch so I would probably keep him. The only reason that makes me want to sell him is he has awful composure and he is always either 'looking anxious' or 'looking nervous' winds me up.

cheers guys , well I signed Stefan Stranberg so that gives me 4 central defenders so looks a strong area , I also loaned de sciglio at right back , but I will keep Jenkinson.

I'm working on a 4-4-2 so the other area which needs strengthening is up top , I use a advanced forward and a deep lying forward(support)

strikers:

Giroud

Podolski

Cornelius (arriving for 1.8m)

Giroud will play the dlf/s Im unsure what role Cornelius would be best on out of dlf/s or Advanced Forward and Im guessing Podolski will be best suited as the advanced forward?

I would like to add one more player here who can can preferable play both roles well , budget 15m, any ideas?

cheers

Started a Arsenal save a couple off weeks ago on the new fm database my first save this year being a arsenal fan it should be enjoyable and am so far just past Jan window season 3.

Struggled first season with tactic but it came together in the last few months off that season but it was a little to late to make champions league so had to settle for 5th place and Europa league football in the coming season, Europe was very poor this season as well getting knocked out by R.Madrid in last 16, we did win the FA up in 1st season so was not a complete disaster. 2nd season was much better in terms off league as I managed to win the league on the final day winning 3-0 v Man utd after winning my last 6 games and coming from 4 points behind City in that period, made semis off FA cup but Europe was a complete Fail again not even making out off Europa league group stage.

Notable transfers

Out

Oliver Giroud 20mil Bayern (end off season 2)

Gervinho 16mil Porto (start)

Lukas Podolski 8.5mil sunderland (end off season 1)

Johan Djourou 6mil Hannover End off season 1

Leandro Damiao 31.5mil

Paul Pogba 18mil (start off 3rd season was listed)

Rapheal Varane 29mil (jan 3rd season was listed)

plus the one I have bought and sold and Reagans over the last few years have spend in excess off 200mil while bringing in somewhere close to 180mil but spending will calm now as team seems complete.

Just started an Arsenal save - hopefully, it will last me for sometime. Looking forward to it.

I'm approaching the first Barclays Premier League fixture of my season: Sunderland at home. I had a fairly productive pre-season, see;

afcfriendlies.png

Sadly, my preparations for the new Barclays Premier League season have taken a few knocks and bumps. Wojciech Szczesny stubbed his finger while training for Poland, while Theo Walcott twisted his knee in the pre-season match against Arsène Wenger's former club, Nagoya Grampus Eight. As far as transfers go, I've decided to disable first transfer window budgets. It makes for a more realistic save.

I shall keep you all updated on my save's progress

Nice to see you back on the thread Llew - productive looking pre-season, hope it transforms into a meaningful campaign for you. How are you setting up?

It's good to be back in here. As for my preferred system, I've decided upon two interchangeable formations for the coming season. This is how I set-up my team for our second game of the season, away at Stoke;

433startofseason.png

As mentioned previously, Theo Walcott twisted his knee during pre-season so he missed out - while Jack Wilshere and Bacary Sagna are only just coming back into light training. Will hopefully have a brief Monthly Update on here later tonight

2012-13 - August & September

In early September at the first international break, had an indifferent start to the campaign. Played superbly at home to Sunderland but went behind to a freak goal, and it took Giroud's late finish to rescue a point. At Stoke I was under immense pressure that I could not alleviate all game, but I eventually escaped with a draw, finally away to Liverpool we defended well but could not find much bite in attack. The scores are:

Arsenal 1-1 Sunderland - Giroud 88'

Stoke 0-0 Arsenal

Liverpool 0-0 Arsenal

Champions League

Been drawn in Group B with Shakhtar, Basel & Partizan, so should progress comfortably.

Capital One Cup

Drawn at home to Doncaster in round 3. Should be a simple progression.

Other news

Walcott out for 4-5 weeks with a knee injury, otherwise clean bill of health.

MONTHLY UPDATE - AUGUST; For pre-season details, look further up this page

Barclays Premier League;

Arsenal - 3 (Gervinho 54', Giroud 60', 86')

Sunderland -1 (Fletcher 76')

After an encouraging pre-season, we were confident of a good win to kick-off our Barclays Premier League campaign. We didn't disappoint - apart from a sloppy goal conceded! Gervinho, deputising for the injured Theo Walcott, scored the opening goal after Simon Mignolet parried the ball straight into his path. Our lead was doubled just 6-minutes later as debutant, Olivier Giroud, blasted the ball into the net from 20-odd yards. A lapse of defensive concentration lead to Steven Fletcher's goal; Mertesacker's sliding challenge ricocheted the ball to the striker's feet, he made no mistake. With four minutes to go, Olivier Giroud allayed our fears of an equaliser after his cross-come-shot looped over the stranded Simon Mignolet. Good win. Promising from Olivier Giroud, too.

Barclays Premier League;

Stoke - 0

Arsenal - 1 (Oxlade-Chamberlain '86)

'Back to the wall job', Smash 'n' Grab - call it whatever you want, a win is a win. It was tactical decision which ultimately won us the game; early in the second-half, I decided to drop Abou Diaby into the holding midfielder role, to counter the aerial threat of Steven N'Zonzi, while Mikel Arteta was moved into a deep-lying playmaker role. It was Mikel Arteta's lovely lofted pass which set Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain through on goal and, with a calm finish, win us the game. With only 52% of the possession, there's plenty of room to improve.

MORE ARSENAL NEWS...

UEFA Champions League: Group Stage draw

It's that time of the year again when each team's UEFA Champions League group fate has been determined. Usually, I get relatively tough groups - with away trips to Russia or Ukraine - but this time, the Footballing Bergkamp's have looked down on me pleasantly.

UEFA Champions League, Group H: Arsenal, SC Braga (Portugal), Olympiacos (Greece), FC Red Bull Salzburg (Switzerland)

Not only is it a favourable draw in terms of qualification, they're all fixtures that are relatively close to home - the furthest trip being Olympiacos' Athens.

Capital One Cup - 3rd Round draw

Brighton vs. Arsenal, Wednesday, September 26th

Despite seeming a fairly easy game, Gus Poyet's side are more than capable of causing an upset. We should get through, though. Elsewhere, Manchester City meet Manchester United.

I hope you enjoyed my first Monthly Update of my new Arsenal save. There's plenty more to come.

Hi, kinda new here and looking for a bit of help. Just wondering is it worth the time and effort to stick with Gibbs as our number one left back? Fitness seems a problem with him and his stats dont really blow me away. I play a 4312 with my full backs acting as wing backs and do a lot of running.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Always quite liked him, good pace and stamina, very fit player, with room to improve his stats too.

He has good PPM's too that suit his role well. Only downside in my experience anyway is that he is quite injury prone which isn't unrealistic.

Any suggestions for a Gervhino replacement in the 1st season? Will most likely be played as an IF on the left as an alternative to Poldoski.

I find Yarmolenko to be a fantastic player, versatile and doesn't ask for loads of wages. Also, Griezmann develops into a brilliant player.

Both of those are very good options but i would add that Tom Ince is alot cheaper and is homegrown which is always a bonus.

Griezmann was the proud winner of worst signing of the season for me in my first season.

Short of quality at right back now. Fell out with Sanga and sold him. I have Sébastien Corchia as first choice but don't fancy Jenkinson.

Signed Santon to play at left back and thinking of selling either Gibbs or Nacho Monreal.

Should I play Santon at right back instead and have Corchia in reserve?

Should I get another young right back as cover? Can't really get Mattia De Sciglio back as Milan are playing hard ball over the transfer fee.

Suggestions welcome.

September 2012 - November 2012

A few things to add in this update. Had a rather indifferent start, chopped and changed a few things, and dare I say it, just starting to get it to work. So the results were:

Arsenal 3-1 Southampton - Podolski 34', Arteta (p) 37', Gervinho 78'

(UCL) Partizan 0-2 Arsenal - Ramsey 58', 74'

Man City 3-0 Arsenal

(COC) Arsenal 2-0 Doncaster - Oxlade-Chamberlain 38', Gervinho 82'

Arsenal 2-0 Chelsea - Vermaelen 19', Gervinho 25'

(UCL) Arsenal 1-0 Basel - Podolski 73'

West Ham 1-1 Arsenal - Giroud 86'

Norwich 0-1 Arsenal - Ramsey 74'

(UCL) Arsenal 4-0 Shakhtar - Giroud 8', 66', Walcott 42', Gervinho 84'

Arsenal 3-1 QPR - Walcott 12', Vermaelen 59', Giroud 69'

(COC) Tottenham 3-1 Arsenal - Oxlade-Chamberlain 85'

Man Utd 4-0 Arsenal

(UCL) Shakhtar 0-3 Arsenal - Koscielny 32', Giroud 56', 67'

Arsenal 5-1 Fulham - Oxlade-Chamberlain 2', Cazorla 6', Arteta (p) 8', Walcott 17', Podolski 40'

Premier League

Sitting 7th at the moment, with an indifferent set of results. My home record is decent, but away from home I have only scored 2 goals in 6 games which is a major issue, but already being addressed. Next up is the North London Derby at the Emirates.

Capital One Cup

Destroyed at White Hart Lane in round 4, and that is my participation in the competition over for this season.

Champions League

Yet to concede a goal in 4 games, a run I would like to continue as much as possible. Already won the group with 2 outstanding wins over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Injuries

Walcott, Wilshere, Sagna etc all returned. Squad in good shape at the moment. Rosicky is in light training now too, and will be a major boost to us.

Tactics

Have tinkered around a bit, and went to a more traditional shape of Wingers, Full Backs, and a traditional number 10 and number 9. Showing signs of working, as have a few other tactical adjustments.

Sebastian Jung was a great young RB in my pre-update Dortmund save.
Carvajal of Leverkusen?

Thanks gents, will check them both out when I get home from work.

So you think I should keep Santon at LB?

Should I sell Gibbs or Monreal?

Frankly I did not see the logic in buying Santon without thinking about who you wanted to replace - they are both good.

He was transfer listed at a pretty good price. I had to move quickly as plenty of other offers came in.

One thing I am a sucker for is a versitile player. He fits the bill how I want to play.

Who would you sell?

Depends on how you play really. I would say Monreal seems the better of the 2.

November 2012 - December 2012

Beginning to put a few results together now, and slowly climbing the table. Looks like a tight battle in the table. First up here are the results since the last update:

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham - Cazorla 72'

(UCL) Arsenal 3-0 Partizan - Koscielny 2', Ramsey (p) 16', Oxlade-Chamberlain 90'

Aston Villa 0-0 Arsenal

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Arsenal 2-0 Swansea - Vermaelen 6', Gervinho 13'

(UCL) Basel 2-1 Arsenal - Giroud 62'

Arsenal 4-0 West Brom - Podolski 1', Cazorla 5', Walcott 20', Gervinho 72'

Reading 1-2 Arsenal - Oxlade-Chamberlain 3', Walcott 66'

Premier League

Currently sitting in 5th place, we continue to struggle to score away from home though. The home draw to Spurs was very irritating, as we were much the better side against the then league leaders, conceding a silly goal in the 3rd minute of added time. Beginning to improve though:

(17 games)

1st - chelsea - 40

2nd - tottenham - 37

3rd - man utd - 37

4th - man city - 31

5th - arsenal - 31

6th - liverpool - 29

Champions League

Won the group easily, but a stunning long range goal when I was leading in Basel robbed me of a 6th consecutive clean sheet and win in the competition as Basel went on to win.

First Knockout Round Draw:

Porto v Arsenal

FA Cup

3rd Round Draw:

Coventry v Arsenal

Other News

Lost Giroud for 3 months with an achilles tendon injury. Major loss, although he was struggling for form.

Yann M'Villa from Stade Rennais FC £25m. Wanted Young DM to Challenge Frimpong,

Dede from Vasco £44.5m pricey for DC but young and excellent Defender. With Djouru wanted to Leave this man to replace and be more of first team.

Jack Robinson from Liverpool £7.75m wanted another young player to help build and challenge for FBs places and is English.

Pleased with transfer in and looking for four out of the five to challenge and be part of first Team for season.

fixturesto2112013.png"]fixturesto2112013.png

Fixtures to 2/11/2013

As you will notice had good start to season and only lose was 4-2 away to Chelsea.

Won the Community Shield and Euro Super Cup in this time to add to Trophies Won last Season.

fixtures2812014.png"]fixtures2812014.png

Fixtures up till 28/01/2014

As you can see we carried on doing alright and went undefeated till losing away to Man City 2-1 in Capital Cup but pulled it back in the home leg winning 2-0, which meant a 3-1 Win on aggregate to make the Final again.

We also lost to Chelsea at Home 1-0 which is was a bit disappointing.

Two games after the Last one in pic was home league game to Sunderland we Won 3-2 and FA Cup 4th Round Reply away to Everton we managed to win 2-0 and Man Utd next in the League away.

Jannuary Transfer window

Didn't sign any one just worked on getting players signed on Pre Contracts which will announce at the end of Season. One Big Name so watch out.

Sold one big Player in Mikel Arteta to Athletic for £7.5m. With the players i had for CM and DM wanted to get as much money as i could for him and at his age. Also wanted the young players to have more games.

Well now on to the Last leg of the Season. We are in the Capital Cup final, have Stoke Away in the FA Cup 5th Round, Have Schalke in Champions League 1st Knock Out Round. Sitting 4th in the League table behind Tottenham 3rd, Man City 2nd and Man Utd 1st but have games in hand on all of them. With 10 points between top four.

Nott Forest 18th Southampton 19th and Brighton 20th in the relegation zone at the moment.

Been a while since I last posted and since went on a fantastic run.

vz7dx3.png

17 games unbeaten streak in the league has pushed me all the way to 3rd right in the mix for the 2nd automatic Champions League qualification spot, with Manchester United 9 points ahead in first. I am particularly proud of the wins over Tottenham and Manchester United. I adjusted my tactic spontaneously to a deep and narrow 4-2-3-1 for the Newcastle game and was pleased with the results, so I changed it permanently and went on a good run until the return leg against Aston Villa and since I have encountered problems. Lucky wins against Everton and Swansea and losses to Chelsea and a battering from Lille being evidence of this.

After a great group stage I think we can finally draw a line under our European campaign after the 4-1 trouncing by Lille. Into the quarter finals of the FA Cup and the final of the Capital One Cup against Chelsea, who has taken 6 points off of us this season, we have a good shot at silverware this season.

January came round and I conducted a number of incoming and outgoing deals. Gervinho and Squillaci left permanently for £12.75m and £500k whilst Santos and Chamakh left on loans. In came Rabello (£900k), Adryan (£875k) , Jano (£1.9m) and Monreal (£8.25m). With the low costs and high potential of each player, these I regard as very shrewd deals.

Decmber 2012-January 2013

Had a period of stability which culminated in a Manager of the Month award for December, plus 2 big wins in January:

Wigan 0-1 Arsenal - Vermaelen 75'

Arsenal 1-0 West Ham - Cazorla 90+1'

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle - Gervinho 39'

Southampton 1-1 Arsenal - Cazorla 78'

(FA3) Coventry 0-3 Arsenal - Podolski 23', 55', Wilshere 59'

Arsenal 3-2 Man City - Walcott 1', Mertesacker 21', Arteta (p) 57'

Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal - Podolski 39'

(FA4) Arsenal 2-2 Ipswich - Arshavin 36', Rosicky 81'

Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool - Walcott 30', Diaby 73'

Premier League

Currently in 5th place having played 24 games, but Man City have played a game more thanks to their early kick off today. I am level on points with 4th place Man City, 10 clear of 6th placed Liverpool. Spurs are top on 56 points, Chelsea 1 point behind, Man Utd on 51. It is all rather tight still!

FA Cup

Needed a Rosicky equalised to prevent an embarrassing defeat to Ipswich after 2 poor defensive errors, I now need to go to Portman Road to progress to round 5, which contains a home draw against Burnley if I progress.

Champions League

Yet to restart, face Porto in a couple of weeks time.

Injuries

Giroud is getting closer to a return, however, Vermaelen is missing for 4 months with a broken foot, Mertesacker has also missed last 3 games injured too. Christian Chivu has been signed on loan until the end of the season to provide cover.

Any ideas on a left sided midfielder , I'm playing a flat 4-4-2 so I'm not looking for out and out attacking wingers?

Griezmann looks good but I'm not sure about him as someone in an earlier post didn't have much luck with him. budget is 15m in first season

cheers

*the role is a winger but it is in a flat midfield so perhaps any winger would do but most I see are not comfortable in a flat 4.

OK decided to give Arsenal a go as my long term save this year. After replacing useless staf members with better ones i'm now on tactics side of the game. Where i cant find a single thing that would work. I only bought Yarmolenko for first team other players are for the future. So my plan is playing something like this:

GK: Wojciech

DL: Monreal (error prone)

DC: Vermalen

DC: Koscielny

DR: Sagna

MC: Arteta

MC: Wilshere (when he is fit), Ramsey

AML: Yarmolenko

AMC: Cazorla

AMR: Ox

FC: Giroud

What kind of roles and team strategy do you recomend? The main problem is leaky defense and attack is quite non-existent aswell. Giroud simply does not perform well while Walcot its all about pace. I'm thinking about standard 4-4-2 formation but a help with Walcot and Giroud upfront but again a help my roles and team strategy would be greatly appreciated.

Yarmolenko or Tom Ince

Ince would cost about 12m as he has a 12m release cause

Yarmolenko has a written transer request and the club are asking for 21m

Im in the first season not sure which to go for as the player will be a regular starter and Yarmolenko has a lot better stats in certain areas?

The way a 4-2-3-1 works especially with Cms your defence will be left exposed particularly with Arsenal's midfield as they can't do all the work needed. It is like playing in a 4-4-2 but without the wingers to help. If you want to try to get it to work you could play them as DMs and/or use support duties on the widemen. Could use a 4-4-1-1 also
