Club 2016-17

The new season in a new league, Serie B! The extra cash helped as into the black this year, though our facilities got downgraded at the end of last year due to technology reasons. We made a few signings based around the formation that got up promoted and I intended to stick to the 4-1-3-2 formation for the foreseeable future. Mattia Maggio was signed up front to assist Lupoli and Laurito, but injuries early saw as short upfront and a few makeshift strikers had to be used early in the season to fill the void. Our weakest position with our formation was the DM role as Pacciardi and Lunardini were released at the end of last season due to breakdowns in contract negotiations so Paro was forced to fill this role on his own until Ivan Varone could be brought in on loan.

The season looked tough and we knew we would be fighting relegation from the outset, however se started the season fantastically with a win on opening day over Grosseto. We continued to pick up points with 3 wins and 3 draws in the next 11 matches to take 12 points and put us on 15 for the season and a float from the relegation places, one of which a solid 1-0 win over Lazio. Following this run, we managed two solid 5-2 wins in a row over Siena and Crotone before a barren streak of one win in 7 carried us across the new year. At this point, we were dangerously close and at one point had entered the relegation spots, and a good run of 7 games without loss (4 wins) helped us back out of danger. This included a 2-1 win away to a 3rd place Pescara and a 3-3 to a 1st place Empoli. We then had 5 losses out of the next 6 games, only picking up one point which put us close to the drop again. But we won our final 3 games of the year to end in 13th place, 5 points clear of the drop and relegation playoff places.

It was a good season with a squad still mainly Serie C standard and a few decent players scattered throughout key places.

Once again, our main players were the core over the last few seasons, Laurito reaching a new record of 29 league goals, a new San Marino Record, and notching up 30 for the season. Di Tacchio was once again our leading assister with 12 for the season, also chipping in with 9 goals. However Mattia Maggio, the new signing was the main all rounder with 10 goals and assists a piece to play a part in 20 of the teams goals for the year. Pol Garcia gets a special mention for notching 5 goals from defence this year, while Luigi Bertolini continues to show positive steps for the San Marino National team by being the third highest in average rating in the tream over the entire season with 7.20 over 36 games.

With a few players like Vivan, Micolucci and Paro now entering their mid to late thirties, new signings will need to be made in the Defence and Midfield for next season. Costa Rican Erik Cabalceta did well in a fairly limited role this year and should see more game time next year, however his limitation to the centre of defence will still make him primarily a back up as Bertolini and Garcia are the front runners for the position. We will also need a permanent replacement in goals for Vivan should he leave next year.

Bill Stevros 2012-2013 San Marino Club update

Finished the season in 5th after a very good start, unbeaten for 10 games, first for 2 weeks, and still second after 14 games. The season then took a turn for a worse which I never really recovered from. Scored only 1 point from six games but somehow managed to be still fourth. After that the season was a struggle although managed to win 4 out of 5 at one point but not very convincing wins.

Final League Table

The playoffs were a disaster, totally destroyed by Trapini 5-1 on aggregate.

Early season form was due mainly to the brilliant form Davide Poletti on the left and Massimo Coda as a lone striker. In the first 14 games, Coda scored 11 of his 12 goals of the season and Poletti 10 of his 13 assists for the season. Right winger Gianni Fabiano was also in great early season form. Poletti's form however fell away greatly until his place in the team could not be justified despite him being captian. Coda also could not score so I lacked fire up front and struggled to score goals. Failure to sign Laurito is probably the great regret of the season, however have signed a new striker for next season who with Coda will hopefully fix that problem.

In the midfield Lunardini was a big disappointment, although he has some very good games, his inconsistency was frustrating and I hope to sell him in the off season.

My signing of the season was French central defender Mahamadou Sissoko who was excellent at the back, the teams best player and he formed a great partnership with Albert Galuppo. Galuppo will almost certainly be back again for the next season if I can loan him again.

My main other signings were goalkeeper Generoso Rossi and midfielder Matteo Paro although I also signed Simone Beltrame and Luca Ber

Rossi was a replacement for Vivian as I wanted a better goalkeeper and he was okay until back to back injuries meant he did not play after January. Mattia Migani though surprised me and although he had a couple of bad games, a brilliant game against league winner Lecce and other good performances meant Rossi was not greatly missed.

Paro was solid playing as an anchor man especially as Pacciardi had injury problems in the second half of the season and hardly played.

Final First Team Squad

International Update

NOt managing or really playing to much attention to the internation side but two San Marino players, Mattia Censoni and Jacopo Gulandi made debuts for the national side and Mattia Stefanelli played as well. Notable result was a 1-0 win over Moldova in world cup qualifying. Apart from that all loses apart from a friendly draw with Andorra, but worst result 5-0 loss to England.

leonavich, How do you get the text squad list you are using in your reports?'

Thank you

Hey Bill,

In FM, if you go to "FM > Print Screen > Text file" it will output it as an rtf. I just open it in wordpad or notepad, put it into a size the I can fit on one line and copy it with

formatting.

Hope this helps!

Trapani simply were the better team.

I found it difficult to win via the play-offs. It was easy enough to win the Semi finals, but the Final was another level. It took me 3 goes until I got up that way.

Money is hard to come by at the club and they have fairly low attendance so I wish you best of luck in getting up fast! The longer it takes, the harder I think it can get as money gets tighter. It was for me anyway. Good to see another person challenging though :)

Poletti is a real gun early in the first season, but he fades fast. I think you will get decent use out of Paro and some of the other midfielder's though. Sissoko is a real steal at this level though, well done! I think you will have a good year with some of the players you have noted in your new squad. Good luck!

Poletti certainly fades fast, back up left winger for me now and might have to get someone in on loan if Villanova does not step up.

Paro and Pacciardi where going to share the anchor man position however both picked up 5 week injuries at the start of preseason, Pacciardi is becoming very injury prone.

Now have a group of highly rated teenage players in the first squad, a number of them regens that I picked up cheap, a number of them will be getting regular first team action.

Not really expecting promotion this year, next year would be great as the younger players will have developed a little more, although if I get there I will not complain. However new RB, new very young CB partner for Sissoko, new LB on loan, new young CM, new RW, Villanova taking over at LW, new first striker with Coda a few young strikers as backup, new young AM, so a very new team playing to a different tactic to last year. Might take a while to get fully going. Season expectation is only top half so hopefully will get that comfortably.

San Marino - 2012/13Serie C1/A

League Table - First season, great season. Had an above average team and a created a tactic around the squad I had which seemed to work well. Didn't start the season off so great with losses frequent but picked up around December time and we looked much stronger going in to the end of the season. We managed to scrape into the Play-offs with 4 wins in our last 5 games which meant we had to face Carpi to qualify for the final. A solid 2-1 win at home gave us an advantage going into the 2nd leg where we managed to draw 2-2 thanks to a Leo Aro goal in the 74th minute. This meant we were going head to head with Cremonense who had been a bit of a bogey team throughout the season. For the first leg (at home) I set up looking to counter them with pace. It worked. Aro scored within 2 minutes and then again on the 25th minute. This was quickly followed by a Carobbio goal 3 minutes later which killed the match. We sat back and let them attack and continued to hit them on the break. It got a bit more nervy as they pulled one back late on and so we went into the away match very defensive and drew 1-1 which meant we guaranteed promotion to Serie B!

Squad - Strong squad mixed with old and young. Rossini and Carobbio both being in their mid 30s but technically were very able. Leo Aro was a steal although he's been quality for the past couple of FMs so I knew he'd be worth it. A mention to my wingers (Siberie and Carra), great players. I've played on and unfortunately the board went over my head and sold Siberie for £100,000 but I still have Carra and he is playing even better in Serie B.

Finances - Very worrying. Over £1m in the red with cash injections from the board the only thing keeping us afloat. I need to get to Serie A fast or go on a very fruitful cup run. Neither look likely anytime soon so I guess I'll have to keep hanging on.

Youth Intake - So uneventful that I didn't even take a screenshot. Only one player stayed on and he was an absolute find by my HOYD. Ignazio Carbonaro. Not Sammarinese but still a great player to have in the Youth ranks with a great report.

Next Season aims:

-Survival. Absolute must, everything else comes after.

-More Youngsters. Get better Youth Facilities and focus on bringing in younger talent so that they can have a sell on value.

-Cup Run. Good way to get money, unlikely but still an aim.

Disastrous start to the season, have lost my first 7 league games. Just can not capitalize on changes created and my defense is getting torn apart. Have controlled some games for large periods and not score (enough) only to then concede multiple goals quickly. Did win the first round of the Serie C Cup 6-0.

And I have been sacked after getting 1 draw out of 11 games, being last on the table. Form in the league was just terrible, could not score, could not defend.

However in the two Serie C games played it was a completely different story, 6-0 and 4-1 wins, played like I wanted them to play.

My more experienced signing, right back Zammuto, right winger Vinko and striker Mustacchio where all disasters, but my younger signing Origi and Carriero (until both were injured) as well as others in some games showed great skill and promise. Origi and Carriero were very good at creating chances which were constantly wasted. Luca Rivi showed some signs at striker but failed time and again to convert clear cut chances, still better than anybody else I had.

Sissoko was still my best player despite my defense leaking 31 goals in 11 league games, only conceded 36 in all 32 league games last season.

Will holiday to the end of the season to see if the new manager can avoid relegation.

International 2017

Not an overly bad season in terms of our moving up the ranks, but some tough losses in the calendar meant it could have been better. We had no blow out which is a sign of improvement, with our worse loss being 3-0 to both Greece and the Faroe Islands. We also managed a win in European Qualifications this year with a 2-1 win over the Faroe Islands before they beat us with our biggest loss of the season. The losses that bothered me were the 3-1 to Sri Lanka and 2-0 to Philippines as I chose these friendlies for us to challenge and win, but suffered fairly embarrassing results. A result I am very proud of is a good 2-0 game against Spain. Though we lost, it was a European Qualifying match which had a strong Spain squad, at home, limited to just 2 goals against us, which made me very proud.

Despite only the one win, the fact it was in an international competition meant it helped our rankings reach a maximum position of 163rd in 2017. Our lack of goals and ability to win meant we dropped to 173rd by the years end, but a decent enough position to help the youths for the next intake be slightly better I am hoping.

The best XI results for this year are also very interesting for future star Luigi Bertolini who continues to impress, being the only player to average above 7 for the National team, despite only having one win for the campaign, with 7.09 in 9 matches!

Been looking at this challenge for a few weeks, so I've set it up on my netbook on FM Classic. Currently in my first season, it's been tough going. Injuries haven't helped; all three squad keepers were injured at one point, so we had been leaking goals like crazy.

I haven't taken on the National Team just yet, wanted to see if there was any prospects with the club.

However, have just secured a valuable away win, followed by a point away at the club 2nd in the league, so hopefully we can move forwards now.

Keeping the tactics simple seems to be the way forward too. Nothing too complicated at this stage.

Unlucky there Bill. Shame to hear you might not go again, with a better idea 2nd time round I'm certain it'd be better.

Good luck. First person to be having a go on FM Classic (I think) so keep us updated.

Throwing my hat in the ring here :)

Good luck!

Leonavich - Great stuff there mate! Well on your way to cracking the top 100 with some more good performances

I don't know about that but thanks! :) When I can finally string a few results a year together, we might start to get closer to cracking the top 100. For the moment, we fluctuate around the 180's, going as low mid 160's and as high at 200's in a year depending when results come. Been more steady around the 170's in 2017-18 though so progress is being made.

Writing up the season review now so will have it up soon too.

If I do it again I will do it quite differently even in the first season. Might do a few strange things like retrain Pacciardi as a D©.

I have started a ri916's challenge game which has been hit extremely hard with injuries right at the start.

Also started another non-challenge game.

Certainly interests me to do it again.

Club 2017-18

We managed to survive last season and looked to strengthen our place in Serie B this year with some quality players mainly in the midfield, and looking to remove some deadwood. unfortunately, we were not able to get a lot of the signings we wanted and had some wage restrictions due to our poor finances. We did however manage a few decent signings to bolster the squad with Francesco Signori brought in to anchor the defensive midfield position and Edoardo Pozzi loaned in for the central spots. Jose Borges was also signed mid year to aid the midfield with Paro becoming less of a cog a more of a burden. Alessandro Grilli was brought in full time after a successful loan spell last year, and Caruso once again comes back for his third successive load spell with us. With our midfield stronger and a solid Goalkeeper now intact, I was happy to move forward, however other teams didn't find much interest in our players and those who wanted action such as Vivan and Censoni were not as lucky and were once again bench or reserve material. We really struggled on all fronts selling this season and made no cash from sales, with only a few loanees going out and partial wages covered.

Anyhow, I was happy with the squad and they justified my reasoning with a very solid start to the season, one which saw us win our opening 2 games and go 6 games without loss from 7. Our form was still top half respectable with 3 wins surrounded by 2 losses on either side, until a 4 straight losing streak resigned us back to our rightful position of the lower half of the table by Christmas. two big wins including a 4-1 demolishion of then 4th placed Como gave hope to a season on the rise but three straight losses again snapped us back to reality. We then hit some consistency managing to pick up 12 points from 7 games to really put us clear of the relegation battle and sit pretty in 14th with 44 points and 9 games to go.

We had a good end of season run including a 2-0 win away from home to Champions Pescara which put us at a Club high of 11th in the Serie B. A few other records were broken like the new Gate receipts and attendance highs as well as the most league appearances, which is now held by Laurito (192) and will continue to increase as he still plays an integral role in the team.

Laurito was once again a stand out with 23 goals, however this year he shared the load with Lupoli who also notched up 21 himself. Assists where once again Di Tacchio's bread and butter with 15, while the only other 2 players in double digits where again both Laurito (11) and Lupoli (10). Bertolini once again did well in defence with 36 games at 7.28, managing one goal and one Player of the match performance.

On the retirement side of things, Vivan did not end up leaving, but instead choose to retire. He got a few more games to close out his career and played keeper in the last game of the season as tribute, amassing more than 125 league games for the club (some prior to my management). Vittorio Micolucci and Matteo Paro also decided to hang up their boots after being subjected to limited playing time on from the bench, both being given a final bow in the last game of the season also and reaching over 100 games under my management in the 6 years I have been at the club. Micolucci decided to stay on in with backroom staff, however Paro and Vivan, on the other hand, decided to pursue his coaching career elsewhere and left the club.

He has been doing really well. I use him as a poacher and play really attacking to try and get the most out of him. Di Tacchio is also a very good midfielder who I use in advanced attacking positions to help with his high assist totals.

Some good signings this year, but we will see how well they gel and where it takes us.

International 2017

Not a very good year for us as we could not manage a win, with out best results being two 0-0 draws. The good news is that we ended the year on a high with a solid 2-1 loss to Wales which will hopefully lead to better results next year. We managed to stay as high as 164th for periods this year but ended up at 180th for the year's end.

A personal landmark occurred in our first result of the year, with my 300th game in football cropping up. We managed a 0-0 draw, so not the best result, but better than a loss! Our second result was against Georgia in European football, but a few disappointing results like the 2-0 loss to open the year against Luxembourg as well as the 5-1 loss to Moldova.

What we really need is a decent striker to come through the ranks as our ability to score goals is lacking with only 2 goals this calendar year. Defence seems to be our best prospects with potentially a good pairing alongside Luigi Bertaloni in our centre of defence, Nicola Mularoni will hopefully improve to be a key player and prevent leaky goals.

Not a very good year this time around... I think a key step will be to try and cut back on spending to be able to upgrade the facilities... It is just too hard at the moment to make enough money and be competitive in the league. Lets hope the new batch of players coming through this time have a decent one or two that I can work into the first team, otherwise I fear another year of static for the national team :(.

Club 2018-19

A season that started with so much promise! We won our opening 2 games and went undefeated for the first 8, winning 5 of them comfortably and being top of the table early on. Our first loss could of been considered a shock and heavy defeat, 4-1 to a lowly Pro Vercelli. This set us in to a poor run of form, with us picking up only one win in 11 games and our lead ending up as a lower mid table side. Our form was then sporadic until a 9 game unbeaten run cropped up just after the break, but unfortunately we failed to convert these into wins with only 4 games yielding the maximum 3 points from them. We manage to keep touching distance with the playoff spots at this time, however results didnt go our way and 4 losses on our final leg of 10 games put an end to those dreams as we ended up in the same position as last year, 11th, but with 3 fewer points. While we had less wins that last year, we also had less losses, and in the middle we accumulated a lot more draws.

The main problem with this season was our lack of a good finishing partner for Laurito, who pretty much held the frontline on his own this time around with 19 goals and 11 assists to lead both categories. N'Suki, the new signing contributed well with 13 goals for the year and 8 assists to be second in both categories himself. Di Tacchio had a somewhat quiet year, only managing 7 assists with 6 goals, but was still the cog in the midfield, along with Petrucci, the young Australian midfielder. In defence, it was a story of two roles really.the Central pairing where really solid all year, Bertolini and Cabalceta dominating their area of the field, while the wider players struggled to prevent crosses and got beaten frequently on their wings and it was tough to find a good combination out wide in the backline.

Overall though, not a bad year and some real talent in the midfield to work with. Luciani decided to not renew his contract and will be leaving on a Bossman, freeing up wage space, but now leaving a void as he could cover anywhere across the backline. We will really need some more fire power up front to help the load with Laurito, as well as some better wide defenders, but we need to reduce costs as at this rate, we may end up being a constant Serie B midtable team, surviving on our yearly payouts to get us form red to black but not enough to increase or facilities or reputation to get better players.

Amazing that Bertolini already has 100+ appearances. How's he looking a few years on from when he came in?

Oh and another solid season there. Keep pushing, you'll be up with promotion soon enough.

Here is Bertolini now, at 22

His stats are still getting better, but the rate at which they increase has slowed. Here are his original stats though to show how he has grown along with the team.

I found that too.. It was very difficult to get players in for that quality of football, but you will find loanees are also fairly hard to come by as you now have to start paying their wages, whereas in Serie C, the parent club was happy to take the wage burden. That being said, you have a few Serie C teams who are in the same boat, so as long as you get results against them, you should be safe.

I'll have my International update in a day hopefully.. Big strides this year :D, things are looking very promising in the results bracket!

Just had an epic win that I could not wait to post about... It constitutes the National teams:

Biggest win

Highest score

First Hattrick

Highest position in a competition

Here is the game

Woah, what a result. And you're not bottom of the group table, not even close! Some big strides definitely being made, maybe top 100 isn't too far off

International 2019

An awesome season in the development of the international team. No better way to put it. Though we had a lot of losses, we picked up 3 wins, our best calendar year to date for wins on the international circuit. All of which cam in European Championship Qualifications as well! We managed to beat Andorra in both legs, picking up our biggest and best win in a 3-0 demolition that put us 4th in the Euro Qualifications with 10 points, our highest placing in a recognised international competition. This also signalled the arrival of a new striker in Mattia Righi, who managed to hit the first Sammarinese hattrick and looks to be a potential gem for the lower rungs of international footballing.

Our first win came in our opening game of the season, also against Andorra, which was a solid 1-0 back to the walls performance. Slovakia then beat us before we managed to pull of another great win over a much better Georgian side, 2-1. Our plucky performance earning praise and raising our profile significantly.

We had a few losses between our next win against Andorra, but our ability to hit the back of the net against Iceland and Montenegro show good signs that we can now be competitive on the offence. However out final 2 friendlies of the season were dissapointing, with a 3-0 and even heavier 4-0 loss to Latvia and South Africa respectively.

We reached a record high of being ranked 114th in the world before our lack of games towards the end of the season brought us back to 129th to round out 2019. But the large strides in improvements are sure to benefit the youth that come through the Sammarinese ranks, both at our club, as well as the clubs plying their trade in the Sammarinese league. Next year will be interesting to see if we can retain such high performances and continue to increase the profile of San Marino, with the top 100 in our sights over the next couple of years.

Besides Mattia Righi hitting the scene this year, Luigi Bertolini was once again our standout averaging 7.33 over the 10 appearances for the year, breaking a new record in the process.

After completing the Dafuge challenge, I have retired my manager and started another in the year 2036. Will now be participating in this challenge with the in name only Daughter of my famous manager :)

Will post an update tonight once I finish my first season

What date is the youth intake for Italian clubs?

Shouldn't be too much of a problem. Although you need to make sure that San Marino start in the same division as they do to begin (Serie C1/A).
