Mr Wallin Posted June 30, 2012 Share Posted June 30, 2012 Also at that time you had the break-up of Yugoslavia and the USSR and that added a bunch of new teams with many of them having a long and strong footballing tradition that meant quite a lot of extra competition for both Euro and WC spots. Keeping it at 8 just didn't make much sense any more, kind of like having the Copa America as just a home/away meet between Brazil and Argentina. There's enough decent teams in Europe who can put on entertaining games and having the best 4 third placed teams qualify helps eliminate dead games. Dead games? :confused: There weren't any dead games at all this year, nor in WC2010 iirc and only 1 I think in Euro 2008. If anything there will be more dead games with three qualifiers from a four-team group, you will have teams going into the final game knowing they are both through whatever happens.
