24 teams next time

Also at that time you had the break-up of Yugoslavia and the USSR and that added a bunch of new teams with many of them having a long and strong footballing tradition that meant quite a lot of extra competition for both Euro and WC spots. Keeping it at 8 just didn't make much sense any more, kind of like having the Copa America as just a home/away meet between Brazil and Argentina.

Don't get some of the negativity, it'll be great to give new teams the chance to qualify rather than the same 13 ish every Euros or WC. There's enough decent teams in Europe who can put on entertaining games and having the best 4 third placed teams qualify helps eliminate dead games.

Dead games? There weren't any dead games at all this year, nor in WC2010 iirc and only 1 I think in Euro 2008. If anything there will be more dead games with three qualifiers from a four-team group, you will have teams going into the final game knowing they are both through whatever happens.
