November, 2014

Another mixed month in November.

First up, a trip to Sydney to take on "Bling FC". Dudu brought us back from behind twice to snatch a 2-2 draw. Other than him, we struggled to make much of an impact despite holdoing our own for most of the game.

Follwong that, we hosted Perth Glory for the first home win under my reign. A narrow 1-0 victory help edlift player morale before taking on last season's winners - who are struggling this season.

Brisbane came to Newcastle and didn't look at all threatening. We had to put a goal in for them, as they put in a floater which Cecchetto slammed home an own goal. We did come back to get the 2-1 win, but left the winner until later than it should have been - especially after the Roar were down to ten men.

The trip to Melbourne was not looking likely to be successful at the beginning. I don't why, maybe playing in front of a corws rather than a sparse attendance had an impact, but my guys didn't settle into the game. Worse than that, they never got better.

Last, and least, bottom of the table Wellington Phoenix. We stunk this game up big time. 60% possession, 12 shots to 5, the stats sugest we were on top. Reality was, we struggled but came out with an unconvincing, perhaps undeserved, win.

After having played every side once, the table is taking shape. Mid-table is looking likely at this point.

Definitely a mixed start to the season, but things could be worse.

Certainly a mixed bag, but perhaps slightly ahead of where I thought we might be. The all-important top two looks out of the picture, but third or fourth would give a home final in the first week.

December, 2014

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

The good news is the mixed run is over. The bad news is things are now uniformally poor, trending to bad. By March, it could be tragic.

It started out well, with a win against Gold Coast. Clearly on top all game, it was alittle disappointing to conceded twice. The three points were nice, and things were looking good.

In the second derby against Central Coast, wer took the lead early and controlled the game masterfully until one fateful moment. The Mariners had barely made a forward move, but Benedek took it upon himself to slide home an own goal. From that moment, the only time we touched the ball was to either fish out of the back of the net or kick off. Terrible all around, and set the tone for the remainder of the game in December.

Against Adelaide, Billy Mehmet again caused no end of strife. The home hans were treated to an unlikely draw. The media said Adelaide were lucky, but my reading of the game was that we were slaughtered right across the park. Not one player could be said to have had a good, or even acceptable, game.

That sort of form is what you wnt taking on top of the table. We took it up to Melbourne Heart at first, for perhaps three minutes.

Needless to say, morale is starting to drop, and it is becoming rare that any player gets a rating above 6.5.

Two words. Dismal and dismal. OK, technically that's one word, but I thought it was worth repeating. Dismal. See, there it is again.

Dud has completely stopped scoring and we don't have anyone else. Combine that with that in every match we seem to have a lapse of anywhere from two to ninety minutes in the defence, and I can't see a way of saving this season. Jose Guerrero has scored one goal for the season, but keeps getting games as a striker simply due to how much others have stunk the place up and he does sometimes look likely. He does have a couple of assists as well, from early in the season when Dud was scoring.

In almost all games we've had the majority of possession, often we have had more (and more likely looking) shots, but failed to do anything at either end. I haven't been able to sign anyone, the players that have been available all preferred other clubs and very few have been available that fits my needs and budget.

We started out 2015 with a win over Sydney, and that was it. In the following four game sin the month we only scored in one, only for Melbourne Victory to score a lucky late one to sink us. Even finishing top six, and a finals spot, is looking highly unlikely now. We just can't get a win from anywhere and nothing I can come up with in terms of tactics or selection seems to help. Even a very minor deviation from my standard set-up seems to only make things worse.

The Gold Coast game, in particular, showed we jusyt lack that bit of creative spark. The goals we gave up came from the sort of play we just don't seem to be able to produce ourselves. Some clever passing, opening up an easy through ball and slotetd away. That said, Dudu did get one on one with the keeper three times well inside the box, and put them all wide.

The only real positive from the month was the signing of:

Player_2015_02_01_Mate_Dugandzic.jpg

I'm probably over-paying him, and he is swallowing up my Australian Marquee spot, but needs must.

There really is little to say about the results other than

Results_2015_01.jpg

We still just cling to a finals spot, with six out of ten making finals you would hope so too - but I have real doubts about making the post-season.

Well, well, well. Nothing left to say or to do. Its just about time to jump ship before the decision is made for me. There is no saving this season. Not that we've been playing that badly, bu we simply can not gain a point from anywhere.

We did win the first game of the month, finally winning a derby game with Central Coast Mariners.

On the trip to Adelaide, Dudu opened the scoring by chipping the keeper right on half time. Adelaide were well on top in the second half and we couldn't hold them out. At least Billy Mehmet didn't carve us up for once, and so we held on for a point.

Another run of the mill loss to Melbourne Heart followed, and this was the one game where we were clearly outplayed for 90 minutes. It wasn't a big loss, just another loss.

Sydney FC has been a side we have had the wood on this season, but that was not to be in the final meeting. It was fairly even in general play, a stupid penalty being the difference in the final washup. Another poor month, with no sign of any improvement to come in the final weeks.

Results_2015_02.jpg

And that sees us fall all the way out of a finals place.

I realised I missed the 2015 African Cup of Nations, so here it is.

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

Four matches were played in March, and we needed to realy turn form around to salvage the season.

For once we got the points when controlling a game with a good display at home to Perth. A pretty convincing 3-0 home victory was soured a little with an injury to new signing Dugandzic. The important thing though was to get three points and stay in the hunt for post-season action.

After that we travelled to Melbourne and took on the Victory. This was probably our best pefoance for the season, an away 2-1 win against a side who were really on the rise. 18 shots to 7, 57% possession, and a stunning 91% passs completion rate in the attcking area sums up how we played - all against top quality oponents on their turf.

Then it turned aour again. At home to bottom side Brisbane we gave up two first half goals and looked horrible. Nothing was working. After the break a quick burst had us draw level, for reasons not yet explained. We had got on top, with plenty of time remaining. A comeback win looked likely. That was, until we conceded two more in three minutes. A bitter 4-2 loss at home to leave us on the brink with a game to play.

Results went our way in the final round, and we went into a Sunday game having qualified for finals through other games. A win would see at home in a knockout match, anything else and we would be away. Two of our defenders were on international duty, others were suspended or injured, so into the youth squad we delved plucking out 15 and 16 year olds - the first choice of those was on under 19s national duty as well. So, I didn't have a lot of confidence going into the match as three of the back four were debutants no older than 16. As it was, the defence was barely tested. Dudu secured a hattrick, and while we conceded one late we already had four on the board by then and I was resting the central midfielders having subbed them off.

All in all, a much better month.

Table_2015_04_01.jpg

Now, as most will not have managed in the A-League, to explain the finals system used in Australia.

Australia doesn't use a Eurpoean style system where the table toppers are the champions. That is partly a result of the other sports in this country, both Australian Football and Rugby League's highest competitions use finals systems and finals are just part of the Australian sporting psyche.

The system used (and it is changing in real life):

1st v 2nd over two legs. The winner advances directly to the Grand Final, which they host.

3rd v 6th, with third at home

4th v 5th, with fourth at home

These games are one knockout match.

The winners of the two knockout games play off in the second week in another knockout match.

The winenr of that match plays the loser of the tie between the top two sides, the winner then goes on to the Grand Final.

I'm not sure this really makes it any clearer.

Week One Week Two Week Three Week Four

As can be seen, there is a distinct advantage to finishing in the top two.

Using this year as an example, looking at the above table:

Melbourne Heart and Central Coast play over two legs, while Melbourne Victory host Sydney and we host Gold Coast in knockout games.

If we beat Gold Coast we would then play the winner of the Victory v Sydney game.

If we won that, we would play the loser of the two-legged tie between Heart and Central Coast.

If we won that, we would then play the winner of that tie.

Basically, to win the title, we would need to win four games straight.

Minor Semi-Final

Newcastle Jets v Gold Coast United

Match-Newcastle_GoldCoast.jpg

The finals campaign began sensationally, with Dudu putting one home from the edge of the box in the fourth minute. Gold Coast appeared to level after 11 minutes, but the offside flag was up. While we seemed on top according to the highlights, Gold Coast had actually put more shots on goal. Defender Matoukou doubled the lead after 25, things were looking good. Nagamura was lost to injury in the 29th minute, weakening our midfield a little. Scores didn't change for the remainder of the half.

Gold Coast's Bryan Bran pulled one back for the visitors after 56. Very late in the piece Gold Coast's McCord went on a dangerous run, and took a close range shot. Thankfully, that was off target and we take a 2-1 win advancing to the next week.

In the other knockout game, Melbourne Victory prevailed 1-0 over Sydney FC. In the first leg of the major semi-final, a 1-1 draw will see the Heart with an advantage in their home leg.

Injury report: Nagamura will miss 3-4 weeks, effectively ruling him out for the season.

Ben Kantarovski should be able to start, having played the last 15 minutes or so, giving us a full back four to choose from.

Minor Final

Melbourne Victory v Newcastle Jets

Match-MelbourneVictory_Newcastle.jpg

Once again, the Victory were all over us. From start to finish we coiuld not find a way into the match. Mike Black opened scoring for the Victory after 12 minutes. While the Victory were dominant we did at least make them fight for goals. Despite numerous chances they did not score again in the first half.

We still had some hope of an equaliser against play, until Fabio scored for the Victory with twenty to play. Not long after that the Victory put away a third and our season was over.

A 3-0 loss to get booted form the finals.

Overall, the season ended up fairly much where I expected despite a run that look set to make us miss finals altogether. We need firepower to back up Dudu and some extra depth in defence for next season.

In the major semi-final, the Heart made it a good weekend for the Melbourne sides to secure their spot in the grand final for the A-League of 2014/15.

--------

edit: Preliminary Final : Melbourne Victory 2 - 0 Central Coast Mariners

2014/15 A-League Grand Final : Melbourne Heart 1 - 2 Melbourne Victory

Well, at least when we got taken apart in finals it was by the eventual winners.

Finances are a desparate concern, the season seems to roll over in early May in monetary terms.

The North American Champions League wrapped up again in April. No prizes for guessing which nation's clubs dominated. No non-Mexican side has made it to the semi-finals so far.

May, 2015

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

The long pre-season has begun. I don't plan on an update every month in the pre-season, but with contracts expiring at the end of May it seems worth metioning a biref outline.

Last season's first choice left back Mario Simic has left the club on a free. He got snapped up during the season, and while he was a bit of surprise packet - and eanred his first two games for Bosnia & Herzegovina, he wasn't a briliant player and can be replaced. Hopefully the place will be filled by an Australian, freeing up an internatonal spot - I have a target but Brisbane put in a late bid for his services as well. A few others have left, but they didn't play much part last season and weren't going to into the future.

One early signing has been made. A new right back, signed on a free. It took over a season to sign him, as other clubs getting putting in bids for him as a marquee player only to have the bid rejected because they already had their marquee player place filled (hopefully SI will fix that in FM13). Before anyone asks, no he wasn't the only guy I was after for the role, but he was clearly the best around and I did keep coming back to him. They guy I did sign into the spot will hang around and is being retrained to handle any place in defence, and is only 19 so could be a star (or a worthwhile sale) later.

They won the last three games of the season to pull themselves out of 15th and a relegation playoff. Atlie's wage bill is now 14th highest out of the 16 clubs, or roughly a third of the likes of the nation's big clubs.

There wasn't much more action on the transfer front, the main action being this signing:

Player_2015_10_01_Aziz_Behich.jpg

I am not sure how to interpret the pre-season friendly results. We couldn't beat our own youth team again, and but went undefeated through the five games - including away to both finalists from last season. Both the Victory and Heart seemed to have our measure in general play, but the way we ground out the results themselves gives some hope.

There is still a distinct lack of firepower and some of our passing still lacks cohesion, but the season will begin with some hope (which will no doubt evaporate with two or three matches).

As mentioned last update, the Copa Libertadores wrapped up during our off-season.

October, 2015

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

The season finally got underway.

The board are expecting a respectable league position, my minimum is a repeat of last season while a top two finish would be at the top of end of expectations.

The media predicts a repeat and a 4th placed finish.

The season kicked off with the local derby against Central Coast. The had most of the shots in a game that wa soverall fairly evenly poised. It took 80 minutes to break the deadlock, when a Nagumura free kick found Eric Matoukou a bit wide of the far post and he headed home. Our fans went home happy with a 1-0 win.

Next up we went up to Brisbane and that game was a bit more comfortbale. We were on top, and took 2-0 win. Certainly not emphatic, but a comfortable win all the same.

Melbourne Victory, last season's champions, and they are really very good. I was forced to change formation to try and stem the Victory's control of the game. That failed to work so we went defensive. That failed, as two were slotted home past us straight after the change. And that was the half. A little into the second half we started to try and play a slightly more attacking game to see if we could get anything. Eventually things turned, we had two goals of our own and looked set for a draw late in the match. The Victory then snatched a third in the 87th minute. Right on time, Matoukou was the hero and we gained a point in Melbourne.

We had the run of play at home to Perth (who had lost 6-1 to the Victory earlier in the season), but it ook 65 minutes for us to break through. In the end a 2-0 win was perhaps understating our control of the match.

The last game of the month we hosted Gold Coast. A solid 3-0 win for us, rounding out a good start to the season.

I'm pretty happy with that start, but I can't see the Victory losing many games (if any) this season. We've only conceded in one match so far. It is very early days though, and I should have a better guide to where we sit over the next month or so. By then we will have played everyone once.

Solid start to the season. Melbourne are hammering the goals in at this early stage!

As you're the Newcastle Jets, you have any interest in bringing Emile Heskey like it looks like they have done?

I'll have to check on Heskey, but I suspect he might be retired by 2015. :p

The Victory are looking really good, its hard to see anyone stopping them this season unless they get a run of injuries.

edit: Heskey is assistant manager at Darlington in League 1.

November, 2015

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

The month began with a trp to last placed Adelaide. It was a sign of things to come up forward. We destroyed them everywhere except the scoreboard. A 2-0 result was really a long way from how the match panned out. At half time we had taken 22 shots to 3, and very few were difficult shots. It was that sort of game.

Next up was Melbourne Heart. Last year the topped the table before finals. This year they are sitting mid-table. Again we were on top in general play, but had to wait for a late goal to acheive a 1-1 draw.

The third game of five in the month saw us host second last Wellington. Much like the Adelaide game, we belted them except in the score. Three-nil in the end, which was fair enough, but early on it looked it could be a draw and two points thrown away.

After that, the rot that been up forward spread throughout the side for the next two games. We were incredibly lucky to gain a point agsinst Sydney. I'd like to claim our defence held firm for 90 minutes, but that wasn't the case. To be fair, the defence did well for the pressure they were under but there was more than a share of luck as well. After Dudu was sent off were down to ten men and to stem the tide we ended up playing nobody ahead of midfield. While this was happening, Brisbane were busy beating the Victory. We had played everybody once and were undefeated, one point off the top.

Next up, to round out the month, we played Brisbane. Bad things happened. We were never in the game, none of my changes did any good, and the 2-0 loss was well deserved.

December, 2015

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

December began with the second edition of the F3 Derby for the season, our one trip away to the Central Coast. We conceded in the 21st as Ibini-Isei managed to find a way through two pressure from defenders and the keeper from a stnading start. It was actually a pretty good individual goal, though disappointing to give up obviously. It took all match for our making the tun of play to be rewarded with an equaliser.

Next up, the much-feared and absolutely rapant Melbourne Victory. We were again outgunned all game, but for the second time in two games winger Mate Dugandzic pulled us back level after 80 minutes. Two games against the Victory for two draws so far this season. The first meeting was a classic match, this one was us holding on for dear life as were swamped from start to finish.

The trip west to Perth saw us go two up and seem in control after the opening half hour. We had extended that to three before the Glory snared one right on the break. It was 4-1 courtesy of a penalty just after resumption, and then the Glory came back hard. We still controlled the bulk of the possession, but Perth got it back to 4-3 late to put the pressure back on. Thankfully, we didn't have to hold on very long and we escaped with what had looked like an easier three points than it turned out to be.

Over the state border and into the Gold Coast for the next game. We came in as slight underdogs with the bookies, and put in the closest to a complete game that we had played for some time. GC had no answer to our passing and running. It was disappointing to not keep a clean sheet, but a 5-1 away win was just what was required.

New Years Eve saw us see out the year at home to the lowly Adelaide. A comfortable win was in the making, and the chance to stay with the table topping Melbourne Victory. Ben Kantarovski was the story of the match. He gave up the panalty that put Adelaide in front. He also scored the goal which allowed us to scrape one point out of the game. A very disappointing result to round out the calendar year.

Results_2015_12.jpg

We have still only lost once, and are in touch with the Victory but they do have a game in hand. Top two is important in the finals set-up, whoever finishes top of the regular season table qualifies for the Asian Champions League. So long as things do not fall away too badly, we will still need to hold off Brisbane to retain second.

Table_2016_01_01.jpg

Some good news for an off-season signing who had an injury early and found his way into the team the start of the month.

Award-2015_12-Yakyemnko_Young-Player.jpg

With the mid-season transfer period coming up Kantarovski looks to be on the way out. He wants to go to a bigger club, and I can't blame the 23 year old. He has been very good for us, that penalty against Adelaide not withstanding, but won't even discuss terms on a contract extension. I hope I can sell him, to see him walk in five months time will be disappointing but looks to be the most liekly scenario. I wil be very disappointed if he ends up at another A-League club, I think his future may be in Europe.

There has also been somebody looking at another central defender, 31 year old Paco Cecchetto at our last couple of matches.

The end of year awards have been announced, Lionel Messi still dominates the world. Indeed 2015 is a carbon copy of 2011.

January, 2016

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

Now, what did I say last month? Ah, yes, "So long as things do not fall away too badly". January can be summed up with "Things did fall away too badly".

We were completely outclassed by Melbourne Heart, the 1-0 loss courtesy of Heart's Konstantinidis rising above the pack from a corner and heading home.

The only points of the month came at home to Sydney FC. We really struggled to make anything out of controlling the game. In the end only a penalty allowed us to take the win.

Over the Tasman to Wellington, the Phoenix had barely scored a goal all season. And they utterly trounced us. From start to finish we may as well not been there as the Phoenix did whatever they liked without us doing so much as bothering to watch them do it. Utterly terible stuff, and we were lucky to go down only 3-1.

The team we had to hold off was the Brisbane Roar. So when we got our chance to do just that, we decided it was all too hard. We touched the ball only to get it out of the net and for one touch at the kickoffs. 2-0 could, and should, have been 20-0.

Morale was very close to rock bottom before I held a team meeting. After the team meeting the "very close to" is no longer required.

Not surprisingly, we are now back in the mix for the knockout finals.

February, 2016

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

Any thoughts of challenging for the top, or for second went way out the windo during February. At this rate, we won't be making it to the finals.

The month began with the third and final derby against Central Coast. The Mariners were on top pretty much all match, but both sides only managed one shot and target each. Neither of those scored, and our fans left disappointed with a nil all draw against the team down the highway.

Not surprisingly when morale is low and every player seems determined to stuff up everything they can, Melbourne Victory tore us to shreds. A 3-0 loss left me feeling very lucky indeed. I didn't find any positives from this game other than we don't play the Victory again.

Perth's form had fallen away to the point where they had reched the bottom of the table when we hosted them. They soon were in front, and it took us all match to draw level and scrape a point from the game. Our midfield looked OK this game, but nobody was prepared to take the responsibiity to take a shot. At times we had an open net, and players decided to pass backwards or sideways rather than take simple tap-ins.

And the month finished with the worst game of the lot. Every time the Gold Coast go the ball our defence parted like the Red Sea for Moses and allowed them to walk the ball in. In all my FM years I have never seen a defence ake it so easy for an opposition. Not one of Gold Coast's five goal demanded any good play, they were all basically gifts.

Results_2016_02.jpg

We will not finish top two now, and will be very lucky to replicate last season's finish. Melbourne Victory have taken the premiership, with four games to play.

Table_2016_03_01.jpg

I realy cn not belive how badly the season has fallen apart. There just doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it either. I will attempt to get a bit more game time into some young players, because the first team is - to a man - playing pathetically.

March, 2016

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

The last four games of the regular season were upon us. As was the feeling of doom.

[video=youtube;xoCZ07hwoZ4]

Hosting Melbourne Heart we showed a bit of promise that things might be slightly less dire than they seemed. Things were fairly even in general play, though the Heart probably did look the better side. Heart's Hoffman got on the end of a good bit of play and slotted one to send us behind. While we won the shot count 11-5 we never really looked like getting the goal back, and a 1-0 loss was our best effort for a few weeks.

Away to the lowly placed Adelaide we showed some of our old form. We won just about every statisticl measure going, but only scored once from 14 shots. That was enough to take three points and at least keep us in position for a home knockout final in the first week. But with two games to play, we needed to gain more points - and improve morale before the finals.

Next up, a trip to Sydney. Cecchetto put us ahead early, which Sydney dragged back not long after. From then on it looked to be a matter of whether or not we could score again. It took well into the second half for the 18 year old Ryan Edwards, playing under the "what the hell, get some game into some younger players" panic strategy, to put us ahead. Thankfully, we held on. A finals place was secure, the question now was home or away.

The last game saw us host Wellington. The Phienix needed the win in order to play finals, we needed the win to be assured of playing the first final at home and top hopefully avoid Melbourne Heart. We were clearly on top, but scoreless, for the opening half until striker Guerrero was sent off and key midfielder Marveggio came off injured. That levelled the flow of play somewhat, and Wellington probably had the better of the final twenty minutes when I tried to go a little more attacking. Neither side scored, leaving Wellington's season over and us to face the Heart.

And the final table

Table_2016_04_01.jpg

An astonishing season from Melbourne Victory, who really should take the premiership/championship double. While their defence may not have been the best in the competition it was certainly good enough, and scoring 77 goals in 27 games means the defence doesn't need to do a lot.

As the regular season wrapped up, a few awards for the players were handed out.

Dudu managed to snare the goal of the year award for an effort in the 3-3 draw with the Victory back in October. Honestly, I didn't think it was that good a goal. The fact that Dudu hasn't scored since Boxing Day says a lot about our run over the calendar year.

Despite the second half of the season. Matoukou and Marveggio made it into the A-League All-Star XI. The same two made into the players association eleven, with Dugandzic also named on the bench. Not surprisingly, the Voctory had five starters in the All-Star side, and four in the PFA team.

Minor Semi-Final

Newcastle Jets v Melbourne Heart

Match-Newcastle_Melbourne_Heart.jpg

The milestones coming into this game did not make for pleasant reading. Dudu hadn't scored for 533 minutes, and the Heart goalkeeper not conceded for 180. That's only two matches with no goals conceded, so not a great worry. Our lack of scoring was.

In the three games this season, it had been level. One win each and a draw.

A fairly uneventful first half. We had the bulk of the play, the bulk of (and better) chanes, but neither side looked like making a breakthrough.

The second half was much like the first. We started out with a close curling shot which their keeper slapped away. From the ensing corner Kantarovski came close with the head for no result. Play stteled into a more even pattern after that, with neither side really threatening again. I had taken Dudu off and switched to a 4-5-1 when Heart started to control the ball more, but it didn't really help anything.

Extra time began superbly as Stella, playing as the lone striker, found range from just outside the box to put us one up. The Heart pressed for the remainder of the period before Kantarovski was again on the end of a corner in stoppage time of the first period of extra time. This time, with the foot, he made no mistake. We hald out for thinal fifteen minutes and survive to next week.

Newcastle 2 (Stella 91, Kantarovski 105+1) - Melbourne Heart 0

In the other knockout game, Central Coast 3 - 1 Gold Coast. We will travel to Gosford for the next game.

In the two-legged playoff for hosting the grand final, Brisbane 2 - 1 Melbourne Victory. The Roar will take a one goal advantage to Melbourne.

Word has also come through that Jose Gerrero will miss two more games through suspension. He would be available for the grand final if we were to make it that far. In other words, he has played his last game for the season.

Minor FInal

Central Coast v Newcastle

Match-CentralCoast_Newcastle.jpg

We had won once and drawn twice against the Mariners this season, having played away once for a draw.

The game sttled into a pattern of Central Coast applying pressure and us rebounding. Eventually that had to fail, and it was Ibini-Isei, a hattrick scorer against Gold Coast in Central Coast's previous match, who prved to good for us. I had him tightly marked, and he was, but he was just straight out too skillful in scorog the opening goal. The team's collective heads dropped after that and we headed to the break two-nil and looking outclassed.

It was three-nil after Ibini-Isei, now with two men set to mark him and do nothing else, found himself alone with the ball in our half. His run ended with a superb shot and the season was over. Maoukou scopred one for us to get some sort of respetability to the score, and debutant 27 year old substitute Leigh Irvine almost created false hope on the 81st minute with a poacher's goal. That was the end of the matter though, and after a good start and dismal fade-out, the season ends just like last one.

Central Coast 3 (Ibini-Isei 25, 50; Jovanavic 43) - Newcastle 2 (Matoukou 57, Irvine 81)

Melbourne Victory will host the grand final. They led Brisbane 2-1 at full time, and made it out to 5-1 in extra time.

April, 2016

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

Only the two finals were played in April, as our season ended.

Brisbane went on to defeat Central Coast in the preliminary final, and then took Melbourne Victory to extra tie in the grand final but the Victory were, well...victorious and claimed the double of topping the table and winning the finals series.

Our finances have gone from poor to broke, and training facilities have been downgraded with no hoe of the board putting any money in to rectify the downgrade.

On the signings front, Nagamura has talenm a pay vut to play out one final year with us. Kntarovski has at least been willing to talk again, but wants a marquee contract and will not be getting it. o, it looks like he will walk. I hope he finds a good European club to advance his career (and not be a threat to mine as he might be in the A-League).

Dudu's contract is also up, but I do not think I will be re-signing him. The second half of the season was too disappointing to have hime take one of the few foreign spots available. He probably only has one or two years left in him anyway. I will be letting a couple of others walk as well, but nobody else as high profile.

Off-Seson Part One

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

Really, this update is about the rest of the world.

I remember managing at Gold Coast and having financial trouble. Mainly, it was due to horrible gates...I don't even know it the city knew they had a football club!

In real life, they no longer do. I presume FM13 will have no Gold Coast United and will have Western Sydney Wanderers.

There were all sorts of issues with Gold Coast, which is something of a sporting graveyard in this country. They have had rugby league and basketball teams collapse, or be stripped away in one of the rugby league attempts. In the AFL the Brisbane Bears were originally based there, before moving to (quite logicaly) Brisbane, never drawing a crowd and barely winning a game while based on the GC.

Gold Coast United had issues with the stadium as well as public apathy. There was apparently a state tax based on the crowd size, if it was above a certain number an additional fee was paid for the road congestion, etc, caused. The tax wasn't excessive (the newest attempt at a rugby league franchise seems to have no problems with it, but they do come close to a sell-out fairly often) but the club's oner decided to close most of the stadium to stay under the tax limit; largely for political reasons, big Clive is a very outspoken opponent of the party in government in the state of Queensland at the time. He is also probably the world's nuttiest billionairre (and a lover of pointless litigation, so I need to be careful). He cracked the sads that the FFA (Football Federation of Australia) had control over the game, and not himself, so he pulled the funding from GCU and they immediately went belly-up.

Newcastle almost followed suit with another mining billionaire talked from the brink of pulling the pin on the club.

Yeah, I remember reading about some of this. I always like to research the real life teams that I manage in FM :) Was surprised that an owner could torpedo his own club so quickly and maliciously.

Off-Seasom Part 2

Apologies for the delay, I had a crash part way through the pre-season which took some of the fun out of things and another few things in real life intervened as well.

I will start with the missing international tournament, Euro 2016.

A big run from Belarus to get to quarters and hold Portugal to penalties.

We had Yakymenko line up for Ukraine in all four games, playing the full 90 minutes in two of them. He did his job, but nothing special.

To club matters, and it was another very quiet signing season at the Jets.

The main signing was probably that of Chris Payne, who will replace Dudu up forward. He is not going to be a star, but comes at a reasonable wage and will hopefully turn out to be productive. Our backup goalkeeper woes have been fixed with the signing of Sebatian Mattei from Wellington Phoenix, who may well find himself starting a fair few games depending on form.

There were a couple of other signings who I do not expect to play a major role this season, but look good for the future. All came in for free, unfortunately I haven't made a sale either. Offers have come in for Nagamura, but very much on the low side. (This club has both received and earned nothing from transfers since the game began in season 2011/12.)

Our form in pre-season friendlies was not crash hot. We did have a few on international duty for the Gold Coast game, bt we were taken apart terribly. A draw with Melbourne Victory is one of those where the result makes the game look better than it was.

Heading in to the season, the media is predicting another 4th placed finish. I'm not confident at all that we are as good as last season, the changes have been minimal but may have been slightly backwards.

October, 2016

The new season got underway, beginning at home to the Gold Coast. The fans didn't need to wait long, with six minutes gone we were on the board. In the end, a comfortable win to start the season.

Melbourne Heart came to visit next, and the game was much closer in terms of the flow of play. On the scoreboard too. But we deserved the win, and Heart's goal was too late to really threaten our grip on the three points.

Our first road trip was to last season's stugglers Adelaide. We didn't really boss them, but came away with the points and new striker Chris Payne got his first goal for the club.

The first highway derby of the season was an early first v second. We travelled to Central Coast and they pummelled us all game. Somehow, they failed to score and we escaped with a point. The game was a little bit brutal, and we played around 70 minutes with ten men - that could easily have been nine with about half an hour to go.

The last game of the update saw us host Perth Glory who, like Adelaide, were bottom feeders last season. We fell behind early, and were not particularly convincing at any point but did gain the points.

Results_2016_10.jpg

Dugandzic moving from the wing to a forward role alongside Payne seems to be paying early dividends.

Not surprisingly, given we have dropped points in only one game, we sit on top at this early stage. We have been near the top before at this point of the season, only for it to fall through.

Table_2016_11_01.jpg

In other news, 21 year old Ukranian international Olexandr Yakymenko will leave us at the end of the season. The deal is worth 450k plus 20% of next sale. Hopefully his time in Japan will see his value rise and the club will get something useful out of that 20%.

We also have a midfielder lined up for next season to replace Nagamura.

We also have Tolouse as a parent club now. Whether that will amount to anything more than the annual fee I have no idea.

The board have also agreed to upgrade the run-down youth facilities and allow scouting around the world.

November, 2016

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

November was a fairly busy month by Australian standards, with six games to be played. It was a trying month in a few ways, with iternationals missing early and some injuries throughout.

The month began with three away games in a row, first up across the Tasman to Wellington. The Kiwi side haven't been crash hot since my arrival in the A-League but its dangerous trip, and not just because of all the drugs my players have to get through customs (our major sponsors are not US Postal, who seem to know how to do these things). While the Pheonix took the game up to us, we had all the on target shots. Coming in I would have liked more than a 1-0 win, but that probably was an accurate reflection to the match.

From the windy city to sunny Brisbane. From a slightly disappointing win to a humiliating loss. Brisbane won everything, we never had any room to move and could not stop anything they tried. A 4-1 hammering was we ll deserved. For the first time this season I was truly angry with the players. There din't seem to be any real reason for it. Brisbane are good, and certainly a game up there is not easy, but we should have at least showed something other than ineptitude.

Following that was the trip to Sydney. We had to work hard, and weren't really on top the game but came away with a slightly lucky 1-0 victory. A draw perhaps could have been fair, but if either side deserved a win it was probably us.

After missing through injury and internationals, Yakymenko finally played his first game of the season when we hosted Melbourne Victory. He celebrated with the winning goal, and an injury. Erik Matoukou also came away with a short term injury.

On the road again, it only took about 80 seconds to take the lead against the Gold Coast. Katsikis, in for Matoukou, extended the lead after 14 minutes and that is where it stayed. We could have win by more, but I was reasonably satisfied with 2-0.

I had confidence heading into the home game against Adelaide. That confidence proved unfounded as Adelaide got one i early. I still thought we would come back, but we didn't quite manage to string good passages of play together. When we did look dangerous, we suffered the brunt of some dodgy offside calls as well. Just after break Adelaide's Daniel Young scored his second to double our deficit. We pulled one back late, and had two disallowed (one very bad call, the other touch and go) on offside decisions. Adelaide took the points, probably deservedly so as we were unlucky but quite poor to go with it.

The last game of the month had been our chance to gain a break on the rest of the competition, but it was not to be.

December, 2016

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

December had four games, and wasted oportunities.

Fristly a trip to melboune to take on the Heart. We won the shot count 15-6, and that was a fair indication of the way the game went. We went behind courtesy of an own goal, however. We did eventually equalise, also courtesy of an own goal.

Next up we hosted Central Coast who were making a push for our spot at the top. We went ahead early with Marveggio finding Yakymenko almost at the penalty spot. Marveggio tied the A-League season record for assists with that goal. We came under pressure for much of the remainder of the game, but sealed it late with a short range shot from Dugandzic.

After the top of the table clash, we headed west to take on lowly Perth Glory. We were in top across the ground for no reward until Payne broke his drought getting near to half time. The Glory hit back straight away from one of very few chances they had created. We got away to 3-1 lead in the second half before the Glory brought it back to 3-2. At that point we started looking shaky, but held on in an uninspiring effort.

Hosting Wellington, I was loking to gain a break on the field again. And again it came unstuck. he opeing twenty minutes saw their goalkeeper regularly tested, and passing each test including two spectacular saves. The inability to break through hurt when Wellington took the lead after an hour's play. We pushed forward relentlessly, for no result. A 1-0 loss in a game we were clearly better in all positions except their goalkeeper.

Brisbane have a game in hand, and the traditional mid-season slump may have struck.

We hosted second placed Brisbane to start the year, and controlled the game. We had to wait for the only scor though as right back Nevile found Yakymenko who scrambled the ball home despite the attention of two Rora players. Brisbane dropped to fourth, and Melbourne Victory climbed to second five points behind us.

We followed that game up with a trip Melbourne Victory, and the opportunity open up a substantial gap at the top. The Victory started stronger but when Alex Read powered one home from outside the box for us, the possibiulity existed of getting something from the game. That wasn't to be though, as the Victory twice managed to find a way to our goal. We stayed on top, but the gap had closed and after a slow start by their standards the Victory are on the hunt for top spot again.

With the mid-season registration window, we finally managed to get the new free signing and marquee player eligible. James Brown (the link is after playing two games with us) should prove a good signing, though his stamina is alittle low for midfielder at this stage (and his first two games were not great, but a lack of match fitness may have accounted for some of that).

Two easier games rounded out the month. We got away to 3-0 lead over Sydney, giving the fans the type of play they wanted to see. That was, until Sydney came back. Right on half time pulled it back to 3-1. Not long after the break it was 3-2. We made it 4-2 in stoppage time to make it look more clear-cut that it was.

Gold Coast have not been performing well, but we could not get the win. A complete waste of two points as we could only manage a 3-3 draw. Aziz Behich has been playing more as a wing this season when not needed in defence and scored two goals, including one where he ran around the goalkeeper and two defenders to walk the ball into the net.

Results_2017_01.jpg

Once again, we have had a chance to secure a break at the top of the table and failed to capitalise. With the Victory so close we can not afford any more slip-ups in easy games.

February, 2017

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

The season moved into its final stages, with eight games remaining as February began. Melbourne Victory were right on our heels at the top of the table.

Yakymenko came in twice from the left wing to score against Adelaide before being injured. He would miss the next game. The second was a volley that he slid on to.

At home to Melbourne Heart we were probably the better side, but struggled to capitalise on any our possession and advances on the Heart goal.

The trip up te highway to Central Coast also resulted in just one point when we perhaps could have snared the two. Goals seemed to have dried up. Melbourne Victory took ourspot at the top of the table.

Facing lowly Perth, we moved to a 4-6-1 formation in order to capitalise on our relatively string midfield. Chris Payne had been suffering a goal drought and so mved into a right wing role which he can also play. That seemed to work as he scored twice and a 4-0 win ensued. The Victory drew the Melbourne derby, and we reclaimed top spot narrowly.

Results_2017_02.jpg

Table_2017_03_01.jpg

So, with four games to go, we are back on top narrowly. We have qualified for finals, and should finish top two - which would mean qualifyng for the Asian Champions League.

The remaining games will see us at home just once, against the Victory.

March, 2017

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

The final four games of the regular season, and the month began with the premiership up for grabs. We started with a one point lead on Melbourne Victory, but trailing if it came to goal difference.

And it started disastrously. Brisbane put on three before half time and we were sunk. Just before the break we pulled one back, but were playing very poorly across the park. We did get another goal late, but were never looking likely to scrape a point out of the game. The Victory defeated Perth 2-0.

Table update: Melbourne Victory 49 points, +27 goal difference -- Newcastle 47 points, +18 goal difference

A tricky trip to New Zealand followed, and while we were somewhat patchy we did manage to claim the three points through Marveggio's first goal of the season, after dishing off 18 assists. Central Coast held the Victory to a 1-1 draw, getting us back in the race.

Table update: Melbourne Victory 50 points, +27 goal difference -- Newcastle 50 points, +19 goal difference

The second last game off the season, and an absolutely vital game as we host the Victory. A loss here would see the Victory finish on top again, a win would give us a three point break and we would only require a draw in the final game.

Eleven minutes in a Nagamura free kick found Matoukou, who headed home to give us first blood. We controlled possession for the remainder of the half with the Victory probably had more chances. We went to the break holding that lead. The second half saw the Victory out the pressure on a bit more. However, our defence held firm and we went to the top of the table.

Table update: Newcastle 53 points, +20 goal difference -- Melbourne Victory 50 points, +26 goal difference

In the final week, we had a Sunday game. The Victory played on the Saturday, beating Brisbane 3-0.

Table update: Melbourne Victory 53 points, +29 goal difference -- Newcastle 53 points, +20 goal difference (game in hand)

We headed to Sydney needing at least a draw. During the week, right back Richard Neville was injured in Australia's world cup qualifying win over UAE, Benedek was injured playing for Hungary's win over Belarus, and Yakymenko picked up a knock in Ukraine's win over Albania. As it turned out, only Neville would miss - and he will be out for the finals as well.

The game turned out to be quite a boring affair, with neither side producing any chances of note. That was fine by me.

Results_2017_03.jpg

Just enough, as I get the second bit of silverware in my career - and Newcastle take their fitst title in the A-League or the old NSL.

A nice personal honour, and it wouldn't be often a one goal midfielder wins a player of the year award.

In the finals, we will start with a two legged tie against the Victory for the quick route to the Grand Final.

edit: Apologies for the way the pictures look, I tried to combine them into one and it doesn't look good on here.

Neville, Matoukou and Marveggio all made both best elevens, and Aziz Behich made the bench for the Professional Footballers Association eleven.

Major Semi-Final

Newcastle v Melbourne Victory

First Leg

Match-MelbourneVictory_Newcastle.jpg

We went in with a highly defensive line-up and mindset. It seemed to backfire early, as this meant that the ball was always in our half. In the opening twenty minutes the Victory had forced Redmayne into two saves I didn;t belive him capable of, hit the woodwork three times and had numerous other dangerous looking advances. We could easily have been down 6-0 at that point rather than it be in nil-all.

What was only our second move forward on the highlights (I always play with key highlights), Nagamura took a free kick and found Matoukou's head. The defender made no mistake, and after 13 shots to 2 we hit the lead completely against the run of play - just 32% possession. I had made some tweaks to the tactis, but it was too early to see if they were producing any result. This was pure luck. Nothing much changed, maybe the Victory were forced to start their attacks from a little further back but the dominated everywhere. Our best period came in the final ten minutes of the game. A thoroughly undeserved 1-0 win. We should be out of the tie, but instead will take a lead into the home leg.

Some key stats underlibe the luck. Shots 22-4, Woodwork 3-0, Possession 67-33, Pass Completion % 85-61, all in favour of the Victory.

In the Minor Semi-Finals:

Brisbane 1 - Adelaide 0

Wellington 1 - Central Coast 0

Second Leg

Match-Newcastle_MelbourneVictory.jpg

We went in with the same line-up, but slightly less defensive strategy. The Victory ddn't take long to hit the woodwork again, but were not as dominant. Our best chance came on the counter, when a clearna ce landed at Yakyemnko's feet and he sent it long to Payne who ran into the box and attempted to chip the keeper. The effort went wide however. And that was the first half action.

The second half started with us maintaing possession a little better. On 52 minutes played, a Meveggio corner found Brown just outside the six yard box. The midfielder had little space, but turned and placed the shot home. In the 74th minute, the Victory had a nice piece of end to end play with the goalkeeper rolling the ball out to a defender who found Taggart. Taggart then went on a solo run to make the match level. That made me nervous, conceding one more would mean losing on away goals. The decisive moment came late. Again on the counter substitute Guerrero found himself with the Victory half to play with, got just incside the box, chipepd the keeper and found the net - doing one better than the man he replaced had done with a similar oportunity. It stayed 2-1 for the match and 3-1 for the tie. Newcastle enter the Grand Final.

In the Minor Final: Brisbane 0 - Wellington 1

In the Preliminary Final: Wellington 2 - Melbourne Victory 0

Match-2016-17-Grand_Final.jpg

Newcastle United Jets v Wellington Phoenix

A wet day in Newcastle for the Grand Final. We went in with an unchanged lineup. I started pretty confident of knocking over Wellington at home. In Wellington, or against the Victory, I would have been a little more doubtful.

The first half began with Wellington taking around 65% possession over the opening twenty minutes. At around this time I went back to the normal short passing, and asked for the players to retain possession. They didn't do the second bit, but we won a corner on the half hour mark. That corner found Cecchetto on the near post who knocked the volley home. Newcastle 1 - Wellington 0. A fairly uneventful first half, just 2 shots to 1 Wellington's way completed without further incident.

The second half was much like the first. Little action for some time. The first real highlight came when Benedek was brought down and dipossessed by Wellington's McGough. With the right back face down on the wing, McGough ran forward and crossed from near the corner flag. The ball was fought over by a group of players, and it was Welington's Jeremy Walker made the scores level. Almost on the end of regular time, Guererro was goven the ball just inside the box. His fired shot was parried by the Wellington goalkeeper. We had one more half-chance in stoppage time, but the extra thirty minutes had to be played.

The first half of extra time was controlled by us, but without any realistic chances to show for it. At this point I started lamenting our lack of penalty takers.

I substituted a couple of tired players, hoping we could get something going in the last 15. It didn't work, and while again we were the better side for that period there was nothing to show for it.

Penalties:

1st Penalty : Wellington scored. Newcastle (Matoukou) saved. Newcastle 0 - Wellington 1.

2nd Penalty : Wellington scored. Newcastle (Yakymenko) saved. Newcastle 0 - Wellington 2.

3rd Penalty : Wellington scored. Newcastle (Brown) woodwork. Newcastle 0 - Wellington 3.

Staight sets on penalties.

In the end, our inability to get goals out of our forwards in the second half of the season cost me dearly, and perhaps I should have gone more attacking in extra time. Oh well, a disappointing end to a season which overall delivered more than expected.

Season wrap, career update, etc to come next post.

April, 2017

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

April saw the finals series played out, as already discussed.

Results_2017_04.jpg

Despite the disappointment of the final match, the season went very well.

Other things to occur during April were:

- due to finances, the board srapped the almost completed upgrading of youth facilities

- I signed a new one year deal, I was offered three but I had considered leaving if we hadn't qualified for the 2017/18 Asian Champions League

In keeping with a few other threads, I think I might start naming my top three players for the season:

1st was the A-League player of the season Andrew Marveggio - Profile - Stats

2nd I gave to the young Ukranian Olexandr Yakymenko, who was only worth 300k when I agreed to sell him for 450k to Japanese outfit Nagoya Stolz - Profile - Stats

3rd was hard to decide. Scott Neville or Erik Matoukou could have got it, but I gave it to another defender of roughly equal importance largely because he played all 30 games - Profile - Stats

One thing I did learn from that is that both my first choice central defenders are getting old.

Finaces are a major concern. The financial year seems to have ticked over on 1 May, we made a profit of just under 2.5m - but that was with the 4m put in by the board at the start of the season. The real loss was a touch over 1.5m.

With another season gone, my career summary looks like:

nice career - well written and nicely presented. It was unlucky for you to not go all the way and win the Grand Final, but I'd definitely be pleased with the season overall. Good luck in the Champions League, hopefully it won't be too draining on the players, and hopefully you can follow up with another solid season!

Thanks, shnen. The timing of the A-League and ACL is such that the ACL doen't start until farily deep into the league season so I don't think the workload will be too great. I may need to change the line-up around a little to compensate, but the A-League isn't a particularly heavy load to begin with.

To be honest, I don't expect to get out of the group stage in the ACL but simply taking part is a new thing for me. The Japanese and Koreans are usually dominant, the next update should include whether that continues to be the case or not for the 2016/17 season.

You have probably noticed the layout changing somewhat along the way. I think it is better now, even if much more like many other threads. I guess the reason people tend towards a similar layout is because it works. Any thoughts on ways to improve would be appreciated.

May - June 2017

Off Season - Part One

Some departures of players who I had not been able to re-sign, or not at a reasonable price.

Nagamura walked. I had wanted to keep him for one more season, given he played more than I expected in 2016/17, but the asking price was too high given I had already signed another player to play his role.

The other one who walked was Mate Dugandzic. There are a few glitches with the A-League marquee system in FM12. I offered him a new deal, but it was rejected as (according to FM) it would have given us more than one Australian Marquee - even though he was already the Australian Marquee player.

The midfielder coming in is 28 year old South African Dean Furman, who I will probably play more as a defensive midfielder. That was the position Nagamura played a lot in the latter part of the season. He isn't great, but should be good enough for the position.

There are a couple of others hopefully coming in but deals need to be finalised, etc.

Also sold were:

  • As already mentioned many times Ukranian international Yakymenko to Nagoya Stolz of Japan
  • Scott Neville had been wanting to go to a bigger club, so I put him on the market for something well above his value to see if there were any bites. The right back leaves for QPR who just won promotion from the Championship for 2.2 million pounds. This is easily an all time Newcastle Jets record sale. I wish I had added a percenage of next sale clause ... oh well.

Maybe the Neville sale will see the board re-start the youth facility upgrade.

I approached the board, but wasn't given the option of youth upgrade. I asked for a training facility upgrade, and the board are spending 950k with the work to be completed by December of this year.

When the season summary rolled around, we were named as the overacheivers.

Andrew Marveggio was, not surpirisingly, named the fans player of the season.

I only have one former club, and this is how they went:

They actually secured two less points than the previous season, and may be facing the drop next season.

July - September 2017

Off-Season Part Two

There is not much to report from the remainder of the off-season. I haben't been able to get rid of a couple of players who still have time on their contracts, and brought in just a few new signings.

Dean Furman was mentioned last update.

A new goalkeeper has joined us. Alex Cisak will become the new first choice pick in goal. He comes at quite a cost in terms of wage, but should be a significant improvement over Redmayne. Cisak spent two years with Fulham but could not get a game.

We also went after a new striker. 22 year old Moldovan Dmitry Nikitin joins on a long term deal. With any luck he will develop into a fine player, or be sold for a handsome price.

We also picked up two new defenders, one of whom I excpect to play a regular part this season; the other will get some game time.

That was it for the main signings, not a penny spent on any of them.

At the end of September we have one more friendly to play. Results have not been great, but I seem to have that in friendlies so hopefully a few things wil click into place once the season begins. Scoring again looks like it may be a problem for us.

The bad news came out of the Sydney game.

INJURY_2017_09_10_Marveggio_4-5Months.jpg

The league player of the season will miss much of the new season. On the plus side, this might allow youngster Paul Somerville to get more time on the pitch. I am hoping he can develop into a key player for the club but a lck of game time has held him back a little.

Other things were happening aorund the world, particularly in July. This included the Confederations Cup.

October, 2017

The last friendly appeared to confirm that there are serious problems at either end of the pitch. The middle is ours, but scoring is done at the ends. We played well, except for the whole 1-0 loss to an iferior opponent thing.

The season got underway in Sydney. We were missing a few players on international duty. And then we lost Stella to injury in the 8th minute. He will be out for most of the season. The problems coninued, with the forward moves totally unproductive and giving up a imple goal to Sydney. We should have been down a second except Sydney missed the penalty that Irvine gave up for no reason. We swapped formation again early in the second half, with good results. We manged to claw two goals from nowhere to claim an unliekly comeback win.

The first home game of the season saw us host Melbourne Heart, and could the fans be any more bored? No. Not even if they read this thread. The only real action was Irvine again going the stupid penalty when under no pressure. Of course, he left that until stoppage time. Again the spot kick went wide. Nil all.

Next up, Perth Glory at home. And we were bad at the back. Perth went forward twice in the first half, we were three nil down at half time. Nothing much worked. A slightly angry speech at half time seemed to have no effect. But something did a bit later on. It was pulled back to 3-3 and we escaped with a point.

The last game for the month was the trip to New Zealand. Wellington peppered our goal a bit, but in a reeversal of trend we were the ones to score. New, expensive, defender Buland got one from the penalty spot on debut.

Not surprisingly, we aren't at the top of the table. In fact, it already looks tough for us to have a shot at retaining our regular season trophy.

Melbourne Victory, again, look the goods this season.

Our inability to talke advantage of controlling general play shopwed up again when we played Adelaide. We went 1-0 down early in the second half when two Adelaide players went on scintillating runs. Chris Payne levelled for us late to secure one point of the three we shold have obtained. Over 60% possession, most of it in Adelaide's third, but we just could not put together anything useful.

We finally had a bit of luck, at least at the start, when we travelled to take on the Victory. One of corners as badly intercepted by a Victory defender and knocked into the goal. I hoped to hold on for at least a whoile from there, but it was not be as the Melbourne side puleld the goal back quickly. As the game settled we started to be more involved and it was not a total shock when we went 2-1 up. The second half, though, just showed the gulf in class as we succumbed 3-2 to a far superior side.

Next up Gold Coast at home. Gold Coast striker Tim Payne, always a dangerman, gave them the lead very early. We equalised not long after, and it looked like the crowd might be in for a humdinger of a game. Tim Payne rose above his above marker to head home a Gold Coast corner and we trailed at half time. Guerrero levelled for us again in the second half, before a stoppage time free kick form Nikitin was slapped by the keeper into the crossbar and back off the keeper to get us the win.

For the Brisbane game we were missing a number of key players due to international duty, and their replacement due to under 21s duty. Not that it mattered. We called up 17 year old Beau Ruthven from the youth squad for his debut. Within half an hour he had an assist and two yellow cards. Being down to ten men didn't really stop us, and we went to the break 2-0 up. It ended 3-0 as we actually scored a few, for once reflecting the general run of play.

For the derby game against Central Coast we left Alex Read in the side at the expense of the underperforming Nikitin. It paid off as he scored the first. A second came courtesy of a goal line scramble after a corner. With that, we had changed tactics a little and put on three wins in succession.

Results_2017_11.jpg

We currently sit in second, but the Victory have a game in hand and shold beat Wellington.

Next time around, Newcastle Jets will be in the group stage - and probably not any further.

December, 2017

125px-Newcastle_United_Jets_Logo.svg.png

December began with a deserved home win against Sydney. We lost Bendek early in the second half, but his replacement scored the only goal in the game.

Against Melbourne Heart we went down in just the second minute. We looked like going in to the break down by that goa, but managed to equalise one minute into stoppage time in the opening half. Cecchetto got his second to put us in front just after the hour mark. Nikitin got one to extendthe lead, before the Heart pulled one back late. A good game for our fans and for the neutrals.

Following that was the long trek to Perth. We got the lead, but ou winning streak ended at five as Perth Glory drew level through a superb strike from just outside the area. 1-1.

Hosting Wellington Phoenix, we lost second string midfielder Paul Somerville in the 5th minute. We maganed to come out with a 2-0 wikn regardless.

We finished the year in Adelaide, and entered the game with high hopes. Those hopes were given a blow with nother early injury, Leigh Irvine forced from the field. Another stunner from outside the area saw us go down by a goal. And we never looked like recovering, a very disappointing result against a low ranked side.

The Victory look assured of winning the league, but its tight for spots from second to fourth. We really need second.
