Oakley started the warmup games in the first XI but a poor performance followed by solid form from Chorley meant he ended up staying at home. Hodges, Dixon and Chamberlain were only ever outside bets to figure, whilst Holland and Crawford just didn't turn it on in the warmups. Fingers crossed I've made the right decisions. SnakeXe
We played ok, but typically for England we couldn't retain possession well enough to see out the game. Hall was very disappointing but I'll give him another shot in the next match.
SnakeXe
Belgium drew 1-1 with Armenia, so assuming we're fighting with Italy and Belgium for qualification that's a decent result for us. We have to beat Armenia next time out though - which should be a gimme, but given our issues against so-called lesser sides away from Wembley... SnakeXe
I'm just speechless. We created enough chances to win 10 games, their only chance was a ridiculous penalty given away by Jed Smith. We now have to beat Belgium.

SnakeXe
Italy beat Belgium, so we're relying on an Italy win over Armenia, and of course we have to beat Belgium ourselves. Of course, with the bloated new format, a win against Belgium will see us through pretty much regardless, but that's certainly not to be taken for granted given our performances so far. SnakeXe
Such a shame it ended in disappointment. In a way it was quite an authentic England experience. Start out with high hopes, some encouraging early performances, then you start to realise none of the players are any good and the fans and FA expect you to win trophies. Good job, SI! SnakeXe
Shame about England, what was the problem? Players? Or would you blame yourself?Do you miss the day to day duties of a club manager though whilst managing a country? If so, back to club management! A complete lack of creative talent was a major problem, but then I should still have at least gotten us out of the group stage any way so a lot of it's on me as well. I would go back to club management, but with a club which will give you a big challenge. A foreign country maybe? Yeah I definitely won't be showing my face in England for a while! Outside of Northumberland, anyway. Back to club now I feel. There's been a few interesting jobs come up post-Euro 2040 so I'm quite tempted to at least have a stab at World Cup qualification before admitting defeat with this international malarky. France and Spain are two obvious big jobs, but I don't know how interesting they'd be, and it's not exactly realistic to walk into a job with one of those countries having just lost a group match to Armenia. I'm actually very tempted by Turkey. They won Euro 2040 in the end, but obviously aren't a traditionally big country so perhaps they'd consider me. I think I'll stick a CV in and see what happens. If I'm unsuccessful then it'll be club management again - Spain or Italy most likely.

SnakeXe
SnakeXe's Career - Season 27-28 - 2038/40 Story of the Seasons: Euro 2040 Qualifying - 1st Losing every away game apart from Moldova wasn't great, but we won all our home matches and topped the group. Euro 2040 Finals - 4th in Group A I don't want to relive this. Results 1 - Results 2 - Results 3 - Squad 5 Most Important Players: 5. Karl Smith - DM/MC - The vice captain was always solid when available, but was injured far too often really. 4. Delando Moke - M/AMC - Did his best, but hasn't really played to his potential since that one excellent season for Newcastle a couple of years back. 3. Mike Preston - ML - Showed flashes of his undoubted quality but we didn't really possess the sort of strikers needed to take advantage of his main qualities. 2. Boubacar Compaoré - DRC - Never let me down in defence, and scored the odd crucial goal from a set-piece as well. 1. Karl Joseph - D/ML - At the start of my reign he was excellent as a rampaging wing-back, but as we scaled back our attacking verve in order to solidify the defence he did equally well on the back foot. deltablue
That's a dangerous move though. Strong as they are expectations will be very high, compared to normally taking over an underachieving side.
SnakeXe
Name: Turkey Nickname: Ay Yildizlilar (The Moon-Stars) First International: Turkey 2 v 2 Romania, 1923 Stadium: Various From Wikipedia: The Turkey national football team (Turkish: Türkiye Millî Futbol Takımı) represents Turkey in association football and is controlled by the Turkish Football Federation, the governing body for football in Turkey. They are affiliated with UEFA. As you know, Turkey recently won Euro 2040, which is their first ever senior title. Previous to this, their history hasn't been great - certainly worse than England's over the course of my career. Their best performance has been 3 quarter-finals, in Euro 2012 and 2016, and World Cup 2022. They have only qualified for 4 World Cup finals tournaments, in 2022, 2026, 2030 and 2038, but they have been almost ever-present at the European Championships, only missing 2032. Following the Euro 2040 win, Turkey have reached 1st place in the FIFA World Rankings for the first time in their history. I'm certainly taking over at the peak of their footballing history, and it's my job to ensure it isn't a quick dive into a trough from here. To help me, I have a ridiculously talented pool of players. As I said earlier, not one England player would even make the squad. I'm feeling quite optimistic, and look forward to playing some good football, which will be a nice change from the last couple of years with England. Turkey used a progressive 3-4-3 system to win in Germany, which I will be keeping as our primary system. I have also asked the players to work on a 3-5-2 and 4-3-1-2 to provide us with alternative strategies.
SnakeXe
That's a dangerous move though. Strong as they are expectations will be very high, compared to normally taking over an underachieving side. True, but I'm not ready for the pipe and slippers quite yet. My manager has a point to prove in International football (his record until now is pretty shoddy let's not forget).

SnakeXe
I'll also do match reports in this format from now on, much as I liked the look of the others they just make it a bit of a chore. We played quite well, obviously with it being my first game and no chance to develop the tactics beyond a skeleton it was very much a case of watching 5 minutes, changing it, watching another 5 minutes, changing it again. Disappointed with how we defended for the two goals they scored, but they didn't threaten apart from that and we looked good every time we got the ball, so an encouraging start. SnakeXe
A much tidier performance in general, we restricted the Czechs to bits and pieces only, which culminated in them failing to test our keeper a single time. I'd have liked a bit more going forward, but that'll come.
crouchaldinho
Let's hear a little tactical talk about your 3-4-3 system as well as your backup 3-5-2 and 4-3-1-2 please SnakeXe!
SnakeXe
As you wish, sir! Talking Turkish Tactics 3-4-3 This is based on the Napoli style 3-4-3, with the wing-backs pushed so far up the pitch as to be counted amongst the midfielders. The back 3 is set up depending on the number of out-and-out forwards fielded by the opposition. If it's one, the central centre-back (if you will) is given a stopper duty, along with the detail to man-mark the opposing striker, whilst the left and right sided ones are given zonal marking and cover duties to pick up any runners from the midfield. Similarly, for two opposing strikers, the right and left centre-backs pick them up as man-marking stoppers, with the central player dropping off as a zonal cover. If it's 3, well, I won't be using this system! The MR and ML are wide midfielders with automatic duty. Their roles are customised somewhat by lowering the "long shots" slider to "rarely" whilst knocking up the "run with ball" option a notch to "often". This makes them play a little more like wingers, but still tracking back when necessary. The central pairing are central midfielders with support and defend duties. They are both asked to hit plenty of through passes, since all our midfielders have excellent technical ability and vision, and all of our strikers are at least moderately fast. This ball over the top is a constant threat. The right and left strikers are deep-lying forwards, the left with a support duty and the right with an attack duty. They are both given a free role to allow them to drop deep and/or wide, and to restrict their long shots to rare occasions. They are my more technically gifted strikers, and the idea is for them to drop deep and collect the ball from the midfield and then run at the opposition defence. The central striker is more of a classic poacher, although I give him an advanced forward role as he's plenty good enough to contribute to the build-up. He's told to stick to his position, to give the other strikers a reference point, and to ensure the ball over the top is always an option for the midfield. 3-5-2 This is not a great deal different to the 3-4-3. Essentially everything is the same, but one of the deep-lying forwards is brought back into midfield. This system is used when the opposition packs the midfield and is of sufficient quality that we have to match them for numbers. I don't envisage having to use this against anyone but the best teams, since we're knee-deep in world-class central midfielders. 4-3-1-2 This is based on an Italian 4-3-1-2, with a trequartista operating as the focal point of the entire team in the hole behind the strikers. The front two and central midfield set up as in the 3-5-2, with the AMC given standard trequartista duty. The reasoning behind having this tactic in our arsenal is to ensure the option of a back four is there for if we encounter a 4-3-3. For the moment the defence is set up as a bog-standard pair of centre-backs with defend duty, and full-backs with automatic duty. I hope to be able to experiment with this system a bit more in the November friendlies against Albania and Morocco.
crouchaldinho
Very nice post SnakeXe! Thanks! Will be interested to see how your 4-3-1-2 works out for you and who your trequartista will be. Should be interesting to see if you can bounce back with Turkey! I would have thought that the England experience would have burned you sufficiently to make you want to stay away from international football!
SnakeXe
Not a vintage performance by any means but we always had an element of control, and the sense that there was an extra gear available should we need it. I experimented with the 3-5-2 in the second half, which probably didn't help matters.
SnakeXe
Very nice post SnakeXe! Thanks! Will be interested to see how your 4-3-1-2 works out for you and who your trequartista will be. Should be interesting to see if you can bounce back with Turkey! I would have thought that the England experience would have burned you sufficiently to make you want to stay away from international football! No problem I think I'll bring in my man from Newcastle, Sedat Yucel for occasions that I plan on bringing out the 4-3-1-2 for. I think he'll do very well in the role, given his performances for me in the last couple of seasons I was at the club. Haha, yes it wasn't exactly pleasant with England. I think in a way if I'd done sort of okay and got to the quarters or semis for a couple of competitions then I would have walked away and gone back into club football, but it was just the shockingly poor nature of our elimination in the end that made me determined to come back with another country and prove myself. If I can do it with any country, it's Turkey - the player pool is deep and wide, and I feel like I could play any system I liked. I've been wanting to use the 3-4-3 for a while now, and seeing that they used it at Euro 2040 convinced me this was the time to try it.

SnakeXe
We probably should have scored a few more, but these are such irrelevant games. SnakeXe
Looks like things have started very nicely with Turkey. Keep it up. Cheers, yeah it's going much more smoothly. SnakeXe
It's fair to say my initial experiment with 4-3-1-2, and Sedat Yucel in the trequartista role, was a success. Kurtar's needless red card somewhat diminished the experiment in the second half as it became 4-2-1-2, but it was reassuring how we still managed to control the game with such a light midfield. Not that Albania put up much of a fight, I have to say.
SnakeXe
The optimism generated by the previous result tempered somewhat. Although, to be honest, we should have beaten them by a couple of goals, and probably would have done had Kerem Bulun been on the end of the chances Albayrak missed. Further cause for optimism is that in a competitive situation I wouldn't have used 4-3-1-2 for this game. We need to schedule a friendly against a side that uses 4-3-3 at some point. SnakeXe
Just stolen this guy off Germany - his one cap must have been a friendly! He's a born and bred Turk, however, so it's a liberation more than anything. I've tried to call him up before, but he's been in their squad. I noticed he wasn't for this friendly window, so I pounced!
SnakeXe
Another good performance, but Sedat Yucel isn't getting playing time at Newcastle, so unless he breaks into the first team or moves clubs we could see more performances like this - controlled and strong, but lacking in the killer pass. I may have to look for an alternative. There's a tasty M/AMLC my assistant noted for the squad for this game that would also fit into my other game-plans, so perhaps he's worth a look in the next few squads. SnakeXe
Nothing to write home about, but we continued our 100% record thanks to a last-minute winner from Bulun. He owed me a goal because he could have had a first-half hattrick. Norway surprised me with a 4-5-1 (I had expected 4-4-2 as they'd played in every previous qualifier) so I would have gone 3-5-2 but had already started 3-4-3. It worked out in the end, but was far closer than I would have preferred, and suspect it would have been had we gone 3-5-2 from the start.
