You Reds!!!

History

Nottingham Forest Football Club is an English Association Football club based in West Bridgford, that plays in the Football League Championship. The club was founded in 1865 and became a founder member of the Football Alliance in 1889. Its first major success was winning the FA Cup in 1898. Forest spent much of the first half of the 20th century playing in the Second Division and their next major trophy came when they again won the FA Cup in 1959. Their most successful period came under the management of Brian Clough, between 1975 and 1993, during which time they won the English league championship, two consecutive European Cups and four League Cups. They played in the first season of the newly formed Premier League in 1992 and have subsequently suffered a number of promotions and relegations between the top three divisions of English football.

Forest have been based at the City Ground since 1898 and its current capacity is 30,602. The ground was used as a venue for games during Euro 96 and hosted the FA Women's Cup final in 2007, 2008 and 2010. Contrary to popular belief the name "Forest" does not originate from Sherwood Forest, but from the Forest Recreation Ground just north of Nottingham City Centre which is where the club first played upon its formation in 1865 (though the name of the Forest Recreation Ground does in turn derive from a time when that ground was part of Sherwood Forest). The club is often referred to simply as Forest the name the club carries on their crest. Forest fans have a deep dislike of their club being referred to as Notts Forest. This is because Notts is the abbreviation of Nottinghamshire, hence Notts County, and not of Nottingham itself. The team are also called the Reds, due to the colour of their strip. The record number of appearances for the club is 692 by Bob McKinlay and the record number of goals scored for the club is 217 by Grenville Morris.

The Brian Clough Era

Forest were considered a moderate club by English league standards until the mid 1970s, when Brian Clough and his assistant Peter Taylor took the helm at the club, shortly after Clough's highly colourful, very controversial and ultimately disastrous 44 day tenure as manager of Leeds United. Clough became the most successful manager in the history of Nottingham Forest. He had won the league title with Forest's neighbours Derby County in 1972, and came to Nottingham Forest on 6 January 1975, after a 0–2 home defeat by Notts County, on Boxing Day, prompted the committee (Forest had no board of directors then) to sack the previous manager Allan Brown. Clough's first game in charge was the third round FA Cup replay against Tottenham Hotspur, a 1–0 victory thanks to a goal by Scottish centre-forward Neil Martin.

Nottingham Forest won promotion to the top division at the end of the 1976–77 season after finishing third in the Second Division, but no-one could have predicted how successful Clough's team would be over the next three seasons. Nottingham Forest became one of the few teams (and the most recent team to date) to win the English First Division Championship a year after winning promotion from the English Second Division (1977-78 season). In 1978–79, Forest went on to win the European Cup by beating Malmö 1–0 in Munich's Olympiastadion and retained the trophy in 1979–80, beating Hamburg 1–0 in Madrid, at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, thanks to an outstanding performance by goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

They also won the European Super Cup and two League Cups. Beside Shilton, key players of that era included right-back Viv Anderson (the first black player to play for the England national team), midfielder Martin O'Neill, striker Trevor Francis and a trio of Scottish internationals: winger John Robertson, midfielder Archie Gemmill and defender Kenny Burns. The club reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1983–84 but were knocked out by Anderlecht in controversial circumstances. It later emerged that in the second leg, the Belgian club had bribed the referee but the referee in question had since died in a car accident and was hence not able to be held accountable.

Nottingham Forest's next significant trophy came in 1989 when they beat Luton Town 3–1 in the League Cup final. For most of the season they had been hopeful of completing a unique domestic treble, but were beaten into third place in the League by Arsenal and Liverpool and lost to Liverpool in the replay of the FA Cup semi-final, originally held at Hillsborough, where 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death on terracing, the match was abandoned after 6 minutes. When football resumed they captured the Full Members Cup with a 4–3 victory over Everton. Clough's side retained the League Cup in 1990 when they beat Oldham Athletic 1–0. There was chance for more success in 1991 when Forest reached their only FA Cup final under Brian Clough and went ahead after scoring an early goal (Stuart Pearce free kick) against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, but ended up losing 2–1 in extra time after an own goal by Des Walker.

Forest beat Southampton 3–2 in the Full Members Cup final in 1992, but then lost to Manchester United in the League Cup in the same season, both finals being played by a Forest team much weakened by injuries.

Brian Clough's 18-year reign as manager ended in May 1993 when Forest were relegated from the inaugural Premier League after 16 illustrious years of top flight football which had seen a league title, two European Cups and four League Cups.

Kits

Nottingham Forest have worn red since the club’s foundation in 1865. At the meeting in the Clinton Arms which established Nottingham Forest as a football club, the committee also passed a resolution that the team colours should be ‘Garibaldi red’. This decision was made in honour of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian patriot who was the leader of the redshirts party.

At this time, clubs identified themselves more by their headgear than their shirts and a dozen red caps with tassels were duly purchased, making Forest the first club to ‘officially’ wear red, a colour that has since been adopted by a significant number of others. Forest is the reason behind Arsenal's choice of red, having donated a full set of red kits following Arsenal's foundation in 1886.

Squad Review

Goalkeepers

Lee Camp - #1 - Camp has been Forest's #1 since he was signed in 2008, Now also Northern Ireland's #1 Camp should have enough about he to keep his place for the foreseeable future.

Paul Smith - #21 - Smith spent the latter part of last season on loan to Middlesbrough, The want away Goalie is a very good back-up for Camp, but his lack of first team chances may tempt him with a move away from The City Ground.

Karl Darlow - #38 - If Smith does want a move away then Darlow would be an adequate back-up for afew years atleast.

Dimitar Evtimov - # - Dimitar is the reserve team's goalkeeper and 4th choice at the club, he is already good enough as back-up and has the potential to push for a first team place.

Prospects - Karl Darlow, Dimitar Evtimov

Overview - The goalkeeping position at Forest is one of real strength. You have four keepers at the club on full time deals, with two being senior and two being youngsters. Lee Camp would be your obvious first choice and whilst Paul Smith is an able back up, he isn't worth keeping if you need some funds which in my opinion you could do with. Whilst Darlow and the reserve team keeper are still young they are both more than capable of being your #1 with Darlow currently the better of them. Darlow's progression is down to how regularly he plays. You could go along with playing him in cup games and hoping he progresses that way or you could send him out on loan with a recall and use the reserve team keeper as back up. Some would think it's not the best solution but it's one that certainly has it's benefits. Darlow could do with some first team football and who knows with that he could improve enough to become your future #1. It would be well worth looking to extend Camp's, Darlow's and the reserve team keepers contracts for as long as possible as they provide a solid platform to build on for a number of seasons.

If Camp doesn't perform well enough and you're not keen on the idea of Darlow being your potential #1, there are some great keepers out there who may be worth taking a look at after a season or two. My first two options would be Joe Lewis of Peterborough United and Alex Smithies of Huddersfield Town. Lewis would be the most obvious choice at the start of the game as he happens to be out of contract at the end of the season and whilst he's not as young as Smithies, he probably wouldn't require as big a fee. Smithies whilst, is younger than Lewis would probably cost more due to Huddersfields reluctance to sell. Things may be in your favour however as at the start of the season he is out injured for 4 to 6 months. This could prove vital in getting him for less due to his lack of playing time.

Defenders

Luke Chambers - #4 - Chambo the club captain won Fans player of the year last season, and while his stats are not the best i believe he should be a starter for the next 2 seasons. Chambers can also play at RB if needed.

Chris Gunter - #16 - The Welsh international is the clubs RB, he can support the RM/RW whilst still doing a good job at the back. Chris can also play LB.

Joel Lynch - #33 - Lynch is seen to be a back-up player for DC but can also play as a LB if you can not find one to sign.

Brendan Moloney - #27 - Moloney is the clubs back-up RB, but again if you fail to find a LB and play Gunter there Moloney can do a very good job at RB, And can provide Gunter good competition.

Wes Morgan - #5 - Big Wes Morgan, the power house of the team, the rock at the back, Named in the player of the year team last season, this guy can be your other DC for atleast 2 years.

Kieron Freeman - #41 - Kieron is a good prospect and a good back-up for RB and LB, Kieron is also both footed and a contender for the Welsh u21/19.

Jamaal Lascelles - #44 - Jamaal is one of the most talented players to come through the system in years. Rated 4 star PA by the Ass Man Jamaal can be the back-up DC the club is looking for with such a tight budget. Extend his contract and try to play him as much as possible or loan him out for some much needed first team football.

Karlton Watson - #30 - Watson is a back-up DC, he does need first team football to improve, I recommend loaning him out in the first season.

Lawrence Gorman - # - Gorman is another back-up DC, but at only 16 he has alot of potential to improve given he has the right amount of training and enough competitive football.

Prospects - Kieron Freeman, Jamaal Lascelles, Karlton Watson, Lawrence Gorman.

Overview - The Nottingham Forest defence is one that lacks depth but one with some good quality. Luke Chambers and Wes Morgan should be your #1 central defensive partnership for at least the first season. They both compliment each other very well and whilst they are both good, if they suffer a dip in form there isn't adequate back up. Joel Lynch is the only back up for this position but due to the weakness of the left back spot, Lynch could be required to play here quite often. With the lack of depth in both the centre back and left back spots, I would look at trying to sign at least three more players for your defence. I would look at getting two left backs and another centre back. This would then mean you have enough cover in your defence without weakening your right back position. In the defence you have a lot of good prospects and they include Karlton Watson, Lawrence Gorman, Kieron Freeman and the best of them all Jamaal Lascelles. They could then all possibly be sent out on loan or be used as and when they are needed. Player contracts are a slight issue within the defensive ranks at Forest as both Luke Chambers and Wes Morgan both have contract that expire within one or two seasons. I would look at tieing both of these down to four or five year deals as I would Jamaal Lascelles too.

Potential signings for the centre back position could be Sol Campbell, Maximilian Haas and Christian Dailly. Whilst the latter two are no world beaters, they both would provide experience and versatility to the squad whilst providing great back up to the first team. If you're able to capture Sol Campbell, then he would be a great signing who would be a good player to rotate with Chambers and Morgan. The left back position has been a big problem for the past few years and this season is no different. This season there are some great free agents who could solve this problem and they are Jlloyd Samuel, David Carney and Stephen Jordan. David Carney would probably be my first choice target due to his ability of being able to play on the left side of midfield.

Midfielders

Paul Anderson - #7 - Ando is a good winger who can play RM/RW and LM/LW, he's fast and will do a very good job if you use wingers.

George Boateng - #6 - George is one of McClaren's signings, With is vast amount of experience he will be valuable for our younger players, but with him aging fast his stats are dropping and will only be around for 1/2 seasons, depending on your formation I would say a back-up to Moussi.

Chris Cohen - #15 - The work horse of the team and Mr Versatile, Chris' best position is MC, but he can do a good job at LB, MR/ML and AMRLC. Maybe a LB until you can find a natural.

Jonathan Greening - #14 - The ex Man Utd player and WBA Captain was another one of McClaren's signings, Whilst his stats are not the best he can fit in at MC, but due to his high wages I would be tempted to sell him sooner rather than later.

Radoslaw Majewski - #28 - Our Polish creator, can play MC but would play better as AMC, this guy will get you goals and assist's. Could also play as AMR/AML.

Garath McCleary - #12 - Garath can play MR/ML and AMR/AML, he's a similar type of player to Anderson but would be back-up to both Anderson and Reid.

Lewis McGugan - #13 - Lewis has been at the club from a very young age and has played for the England Youth team at various levels. Lewis is one for the brightest players to come through the academy for years and has a very good future at the club, His best position is AMC just behind the forwards, he will score goals, make sure he signs a new contract keeping him at the club as long as posible.

Guy Moussi - #19 - The Moose briefly left the club at the end of last season whilst he was negotiating a contract, but resigned when McClaren was named as manager, this guy is a beast, he's strong, he runs all day and a fantastic tackler, but is prone to giving the ball away. Best position is DM.

Andy Reid - #11 - This is Reidy's second spell at the club, the first saw him leave for Tottenham in a deal which included Michael Dawson worth £8m. Reid isnt a fast player but he is very creative, a good passer and has great vision for the long through balls. Can play ML/AML/MC.

Ryan Markey - # - Another good prospect, while not as good as Jamaal, Ryan should be good enough for Championship football as long as he gets first team experience.

Prospects - Ryan Markey

Overview - The midfield is another one that has some good strength too. You have players who can play and operate in a number of formations and roles which is great considering how competitive the Championship is. Quite obviously the best player in the midfield is Lewis McGugan, who despite his young age has been in and around the Forest first team since 17. McGugan is such a key player in the squad, that I'd try and tie him down to a five year contract, even if it means giving him a hefty pay rise. The squad last season lacked experience in the midfield which is a slight problem. This season, however, that is all change as you have three new players in the midfield and they are George Boateng, Jonathan Greening and Andy Reid. All players despite their ages will offer different options in the midfield which is good as it means you will be able to rotate the side. There is one good prospect in the midfield and that happens to be Ryan Markey who can play on the left side. Ideally you'd be able to give him enough first team football so that he can progress. If you are able to sign two left backs then the midfield is good enough as it is unless you find another great wide midfielder who can play on the left and right who would make a big difference to the team. If you can't then it's no problem and the midfield is good enough to cope.

The midfield is strong but for me, it lacks the depth for the formation that I would employ. With the Forest squad, I'd like to play a 4-1-2-1-2 as I feel you are covered well to use this formation to good effect. Therefore, I'd possibly look at selling both Paul Anderson and Garath McCleary as they are both wide players who wouldn't fit in with my formation. Much like Paul Smith and David McGoldrick would, both of these players could provide some much needed funds to help boost other areas of the squad.

Forwards

Dexter Blackstock - #23 - Dexter suffered a serious injury at the start of last season which has kept him out for the start of this season, Dexter should be a key player when fully fit. He is a well rounded forward who will score and get assist's.

Matt Derbyshire - #8 - The English Killer, nicknamed by the Olympiacos fans for his winning goal against Panathinaikos, spent 3 years playing in the EPL for Blackburn then moving to Olympiacos on loan before making a permanent move. From there he spent last season on loan at Birmingham without making much impact, then Forest's new manager McClaren signed Derbyshire for an undisclosed fee. While Derbyshire is only rated as 2.5 stars I still believe he will be a key figure in any Forest squad.

Robbie Findley - #24 - Findley signed for us last December but was hampered by injuries and only making two appearances during the 2010/2011 campaign, Now fully fit Findley should have a key part to play this season, he's fast sharp and has an eye for goal.

David McGoldrick - #17 - Nicknamed McGoaldrought by some Forest fans, David has never lived up to expectations, scoring just 8 goals in 54 games, his stats are not the worst and he can play in most attacking positions, David should be a good back-up to the other Five forwards.

Ishmael Miller - #10 - The ex Man City academy player Ish signed for Forset this summer from WBA for a fee of £1.2m. Miller should definitely be your No.1 forward, he's fast, skillful and determined, this guy will score a bag full of goals.

Marcus Tudgay - #20 - Tudgay can play all across the front line but I wouldn't consider him a first choice more a of rotation/back-up forward, although I am more than confident of his ability.

Eurico Sebastiao - # - Rated 3.5 start Eurico already looks like a star, he's 16 years old and has bags of potential, give him first team football and he'll improve loads.

Prospects - Eurico Sebastiao

Overview - The strikeforce that you inherit at the start of the game as Forest boss is one of real quality and strength. Just like the midfield you have a number of players who are all able or seem to be able to perform a number of different roles in a number of different formations. The standout candidates have to be Matt Derbyshire and Ishmael Miller. Both players have good Premier League quality and are still extremely young. Derbyshire and Miller are closely followed by Robbie Findley and Dexter Blackstock. Findley has pace to burn and could be another option as poacher instead of Matt Derbyshire. Unfortunately, at the start of the game, Dexter Blackstock is out injured for a couple a months. The final two senior strikers at the club are Marcus Tudgay and David McGoldrick with both also able to operate as right attacking midfielders. I would probably say that McGoldrick could be sold if need be to help fund other acquisitions. If you're not taken by Marcus Tudgay then I would probably say that he could be sold as well. If you do sell him then I'd look at signing a player on loan if the price is right. Possible signings could be Nile Ranger, Milan Lalkovic, Haris Vuckic, Danny Welbeck or Federico Macheda. The latter two could be seen as unrealistic targets as they don't appear on the original loan list. Whilst it's not ideal, if you don't ask you don't get. All these players would require full wages to be paid by you as requested by their parent clubs if they were to have a chance of joining the club. The club also has a good prospect in this position as well, and his name is Eurico Sebastiao. I would look to send him out on loan or if you sell Tudgay as well, I'd use him as your fifth striker.

Formation and Player Roles

Tactic #1

NottinghamForestTactics_Overview-4.png

This would be my preferred formation due to the fact I believe Forest have stronger central midfielders than wingers, I would sell some of the fringe players to free up funds and help you find a LB. Then I would move Gunter back to RB and Moloney as back-up, whilst rotating all the MC's when suits.

Tactic #2

NottinghamForestTactics_Overview-3.png

If you do decide to keep and use your wingers then this formation is a winner, it uses a DM to cover your defence and the wingers to provide a good attacking sense on the counter attack. I would review the players you are likely to use in the middle and sell the one's your not going to use and try and bring in a good winger to add depth.

Tactic #3

NottinghamForestTactics_Overview-2.png

This is another formation which utilises the strong midfielders. This formation uses the MCL to support you back for while your MCR supports you going forward and your AMC plays as an inside forward just behind the front man. This formation will be strong going forward so you may need to invest in a LB and DC to strengthen the back line.

Why you should be Nottingham Forest

The reason why I feel you should be Nottingham Forest is because they are a great team with a great history. Although they haven't won a trophy in over a decade, they have won two European Cups back to back in the late 70s, early 80s. Times are changing at The City Ground and with funds tighter than ever, your managerial prowess will be tested to the limits. These times can be good though, a squad, that with a few additions could easily challenge for the play-offs, if not automatic promotion and if you're able to find that secret formula, you could bring back the good times that Ol' Big 'Ed had at the club nearly 25 years ago.

Very good guide Danger Mouse, cant wait to get started, Rob Kelly needs adding as Assistant Manager, JFH is first team coach.

Rob Kelly will come to the club as assistant manager if you offer him a contract.. ;)

Need to get that sorted for the patch though.

I wouldn't get Rob Kelly unless you're going for realism. Personally I've gone for Tony Coton for £1k a week. I've released Schoenmaker, Makis and JFH. Whilst promoting Jess to a coach and I wanted to do so with Marshall but I faffed about with his wage. I'm close to bringing in Bryan Klug as a coach and I've asked for more wages, more coaches and I was rejected on both.

Kelly is a good assistant, his coaching stats are low....but his management stats are quite good, i always leave Marshall to run the youth system, Makis is actually youth team scout in real life.

I know that and I'm not knocking it. I just prefer Coton. JFH's stats are well not good and Makis I don't rate either.

Coton is a good choice , he was on man utd staff for years, Did you get a decent fitness coach to replace Schoenmaker?

So i'm waiting for the postman to turn up with my copy but I have smashed my way through the demo. The main bit of business I did was to sell Raddy for £1.4m (picture to be uploaded soon). I rate him as a player, just I don't play a formation that would suit him. Brought in Hogan Ephraim from QPR on loan, cracking player. Brought in a couple of youngsters as recommended by scouts but spending wise, well in budget. Was heading the league comfortably until I hit mid november and went on a 4-5 game no win streak which has seen me drop to 3rd. Left the staffing jobs as they are.

Pre-Season 2011

Pre-season has been ok so far and we've done well. Whilst we haven't strengthened as much as I would of liked, we've been unlucky with the results and should of had at least two more victories. Transfer wise three players have joined the club with a fourth due to join in January once his contract expires. Ideally I would have liked another two central midfielders and my two key targets were Liam Trotter from Millwall and Adam Barton from Preston. The latter, I had a bid of £500k accepted, but unfortunately he wouldn't accept my offer of £2k a week, he wanted £5k so negotiations broke down there. My bid for Liam Trotter, again £500k was turned down. If in January they're still available at reasonable prices, I may consider making new bids for them. Looking over my transfers, I would ave probably not brought in Sol Campbell as his wages are quite high and he's not as good as I thought.

In the friendlies, we were unlucky not to win against Oldham and Arsenal Reserves and Arsenal Reserves scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes of the game. Including one in the second minute of stoppage time.

Jammy git. Mine came back with Blackburn and Liverpool so I took Liverpool. got a cracking left back called Jack Robinson. Posted it up in the youngsters thread. Struggled with loans though, most teams wanted the players wages playing and a fee. A lot more difficult than FM11!

Most received for one player - NF, David McGoldrick(£875k)

I got £1m (£225k up front, £775k over 24 months). Only got £450k for Ando though. Turned down a £1.5m bid from Norwich for Raddy, he's going nowhere. He got monk on though, I've had to give him a new contract and now Cohen is having a fit.

Backroom staff, I chopped Hasslebaink, Jess and Sutton. Signed Tosh Farrell and promoted Marshall to coach, I also signed Steve Smith (GK coach) as my Ass. Man. as I like them to have good JPA & JPP, plus motivation. (in case I **** everyone off with team talks :D)

You're the jammy git, I tried for Robinson but he sacked me off and went to Swansea. Had to pay £250k iirc for Joe Mattock on loan.

Just been hit by some of the worst luck ever :(. Marcus Tudgay, Adam Eckersley and George Boateng all picked up injuries in the game against Barnsley. Boateng's out for 4 weeks or so. Tudgay who was on a hat-trick on that game is now out for 4 months and Eckersley is out for about 2 months. So Lynch, Moloney, Cohen and Freeman will all have to fill in there.

I have got Sol Campbell to tutor Jamaal Lascelles which is a bonus.

Have any of you got Ish to play well yet? All through pre-season and in the three competitive games I've played, he's been rubbih. I've tried playing him as a TM-Attack, Poacher, AF, TM-Support. Nothing I try is working. I do have Findley on the right as a poacher. Could it be that they're getting in each others way?

It could be mate, both the same type of player, on the demo Ish scored 3 in the first few games but i swapped things around and he didnt score any more after 10 games, try Ish and Derbyshire together.

Yeah I got him playing really well and performing well in every game until he got injured and was out for a few months. He's back in the side now, mid January and in 10 goals in 20 games. So not amazing, he was on around 9 goals in 12 games before his injury. I play him as a Poacher and vary his partner. I can't quite get a 2nd striker settled though.
